Notable NHL Streaks

Since the rule changes leading into the 05-06 season up until the end of last season, these were the stats for the longest completed 6+ goal game streaks....

6+ goal game streaks

streak length ... No. of streaks
5 games ........... 160
6 games ........... 72
7 games ........... 35
8 games ........... 18
9 games ........... 12
10 games .......... 4
11 games .......... 3
12+ games ........ 0

This season there have been two 5-game streaks completed and *drum roll* the Pittsburgh Penguin's current 12 game streak, which is obviously now the single longest such streak on record.

Looking at Pittsburgh's coming opponents:

vs. LA Kings: without Quick in goal, LA has obviously not been the defensive/Under powerhouse it had been in recent seasons. They've paid out on only 2 Unders over their last 13 games, with 11 of those totaling at least 5 goals inside regulation.

@Toronto: These mugs matched a franchise record (since the implementation of the new rules) vs. Arizona in playing out a 7th straight game totaling less than 6 goals (having twice done so previously, in the 09-10 & 11-12 seasons: both those previous streaks ended at 7 games). Their last 4 meetings w/Pitt (dating back to last season) have totaled 3, 4, 5 & 5 regulation goals; their last 3 home games against them have totaled 3, 3 & 4 goals.

vs. NY Rangers: If this scoring streak doesn't end in the previous 2 games, then it's hard to imagine it survives this one: 11 of their last 18 meetings with Lundqvist in net have totaled 5 goals or less (61% rate), with not a single instance of 4 straight contests totaling at least 6 goals (their last 3 meetings have totaled 9, 7 & 7 goals).

Everything being normal (relative to recent seasons form), the standout fixture to end this streak would've been the next one up (but LA without Quick is a completely different proposition), and of the three fixtures the least attractive opponent to have expected it to end against would've been Toronto. But things are in flux, and the current situation makes for the exact opposite expectation for the time being. I'll let the LA game slide (esp. since the Kings could opt to use their backup goalie in this spot) and if the streak survives then I'll look to consider an Under chase.

Who is this Pittsburg team you speak of?

Was at the game on Wednesday, good one to see live

Always great to learn after the fact that a key offensive piece (Letang) was missing for Pitt, basically sealed the deal for that game to be the streak ender.

The Toronto Maple Leafs currently has a 7 game sub-6 goals streak going. To put this into context, the following stats (of completed streaks) are from the 05-06 season onwards (since the rule changes) -

sub-6 goal game streaks

Streak length ... No. of streaks
5 games .............. 249
6 games ............. 141
7 games ............. 86
8 games ............. 44
9 games ............. 27
10 games ........... 15
11 games ............ 6
12 games ............ 7
13 games ............ 1
14 games ............ 3
15 games ............ 0
16 games ............ 1

Of all the streaks to reach at least 5 games in length, only 5.7% have gone on to double in length/reach 10 games, and only 3.1% have gone on to more than double in length. So under normal circumstances one would be on solid ground to observe that Toronto's current streak "should end" within the next 2 games. But added to the historical statistical inertia presented above, is the fact that since the rule changes that preceded the 05-06 season Toronto as a team has never played 8 straight games without at least 1 of them totaling 6 goals. Looking at Toronto's next few opponents:

vs. Pittsburgh:
12 of Pitt's last 13 games have totaled at least 6 goals, and their last 9 vs. Eastern Conf. opponents have all totaled at least 6 goals. However, they lost Kris Letang to injury against Boston (his crucial absence on offense anticipating their last game shutout loss) and their last 3 games @Toronto have totaled 3, 3 & 4 goals.

vs. Anaheim: 19 of the Duck's last 21 games have totaled at least 5 goals, and 5 of their last 6 have paid out on the Over. A franchise over recent weeks that seems to be struggling to make up its mind about who their #1 starting goalie should be, always a good sign when wanting to back goals being scored. The last 4 meetings in Toronto between these 2 teams (dating back to Jan. 2011) saw 7, 6, 8 & 10 regulation goals scored (also notable is the fact that Toronto has won 8 of their last 9 meetings).

@Colorado: The Avs have a home total mark of O/U 6-2-3 this season when neither they or their opponent is shutout, and since the 05-06 season every game these 2 teams have played in Colorado has totaled at least 7 goals (6 games in total, avg. of 8.50 gpg).

Given the Pens loss of Letang and their recent record of playing out low scoring contests @Toronto, I'll only consider a chase headed into the Anaheim fixture.

The Nashville Predators have seen their last 7 home games total 6+ goals, thus setting a franchise record. Prior to their latest home result, a 5-2 loss to Minnesota, they'd never seen more than 6 straight home games total 6 or more goals since their introduction into the league (in the 98-99 season). Just FTR, here is a table of their most notable home game streaks of 6+ goals...

Streak length ...... No. of streaks
3 games ........... 15
4 games ........... 4
5 games ........... 7
6 games ........... 2
7 games ............ 1*

Looking at Nashville's next few home opponents...

vs. NY Rangers: these 2 teams have seen 8 of their last 9 meetings total 5 goals or less, with the only exception being NYR's first game in 5 days & since Christmas Day in 2015 (possibly suffering a little yuletide hangover, Lundqvist conceded 5 goals in 50 mins). The Rangers are currently in impressive defensive form, conceding just 3 total goals in their last 5 games played (while only averaging a little over 2 gpg themselves).

vs. LA Kings: while in a previous post above I mentioned that w/out Quick LA is no longer the "Under powerhouse" they previously were, nevertheless none of 1st choice goalie Budaj's last 6 road starts have totaled more than 5 goals. 4 of their last 6 meetings in Nashville have totaled 5 goals or fewer.

vs. Minnesota: the Wild currently have one of the best performing goalies going, and while they won 5-2 recently @Nashville that scoreline included 2 empty net goals. The 4 meetings between these 2 teams last season totaled 3, 5, 4 & 5 goals.

Hard to think this Preds streak lasts beyond these 3 fixtures, but with their form poor (due to, funnily enough, a leaky defense) I'll look to find something to parlay with the u5.0 here rather than begin any chase with a straight bet.

The Minnesota Wild sit on a 6 game win streak, which marks only the 7th time since the start of the 05-06 season (& the new rule changes) that they've managed to string together said number of wins. Of those 6 previous streaks, in 3 of them they won game 7 & in 3 of them they lost game 7. The one common theme separating the continuation or not of their winning ways?

- All 3 wins came facing Arizona (4-3/OT & 3-2 as a home fave; 4-1 as a road dog).

- All 3 losses came facing any team other than Arizona (Ottawa, Winnipeg & Anaheim).

Saturday they play Arizona in attempting to notch up their 7th straight win. Arizona has won 2 straight road games after winning only 3 of their previous 15.
