Four teams who hold their preseason best value long after the No. 1 QB takes off his helmet

Philadelphia Eagles

QBs: Michael Vick, Nick Foles, Matt Barkley, Dennis Dixon

New head coach Chip Kelly has been working out his platoon of passers this summer, trying to find which QB best suits his up-tempo offense. Vick and Foles split time as the No. 1 last year and there is a movement lobbying for Barkley to take over the offense. Dixon could actually slide into the No. 3 spot if the Eagles drop Vick or Foles following camp.

Cincinnati Bengals

QBs: Andy Dalton, Josh Johnson, John Skelton, Zac Robinson

Dalton is maturing into one of the AFC’s best passers and has some experience behind him on the depth chart. Johnson has starts under his belt, going back to his days with Tampa Bay, and Skelton started 17 games in three years with Arizona. Robinson is currently out of action due to injury, so the preseason load could be spread amongst the top three QBs on the depth chart.

Seattle Seahawks

QBs: Russell Wilson, Brady Quinn, Tarvaris Jackson

Wilson’s sublime rookie campaign has the Seahawks looking to air it out a little more in 2013. However, Seattle may be without offseason addition WR Percy Harvin for the year and will use the preseason to fill that void in the WR corps. Quinn had 12 starts during this tenure in Cleveland and was the No. 1 for eight games in Kansas City last year. Jackson has 34 career starts, including 14 with Seattle in 2011.

Houston Texans

QBs: Matt Schaub, T.J. Yates, Case Keenum, Stephen McGee

Schaub passed for more than 4,000 yards, starting all 16 games for the Texans last year. Yates picked up starting stripes when Schaub got hurt in 2011, taking first-team snaps in five regular season games and two postseason performances. Keenum hasn’t seen any regular season action but has a stud passing pedigree, breaking records during this college days. McGee was buried on Dallas' depth chart for a few seasons but was actually impressive when he did get time under center.

Eight coaching changes coming into the 2013 season.


Arizona - Bruce Arians - was the former Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator - Arians filled in for head coach Chuck Pagano while he battled leukemia, and went 9-3 in his absence.

Buffalo - Doug Maronne - Syracuse head coach for the past 4 years - his prior NFL experience was with the New Orleans back in 2008 as the Saints offensive coordinator.

Chicago - Marc Trestman - Former coach of the Montreal Alouettes - NFL experience as an Offensive coordinator for the 49ers and Raiders.

Cleveland - Rob Chudzinski - Offensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers - however the offense will be turned over to Norv Turner.

Jacksonville - Gus Bradley - Former defensive coordinator the last four seasons of the league-leading Seahawks defense.

Kansas City - Andy Reid - head coach of the Eagles the last 14 years.

Philadelphia - Chip Kelly - head coach of the Oregon Ducks - offensive genius of the Ducks high octane offense - first NFL coaching job.

San Diego - Mike McCoy - is the former Broncos offensive coordinator for the Broncos and helped lead Denver to the playoffs the past two seasons with two totally different quarterbacks' styles.





Preseason or not, a few coaches need to quieten the rumors. Putting together a winning record in the warm-ups can cool a coach’s seat and appease a nervous fanbase, easing the pressure heading into Week 1.

Four coaches who possibly need to win more than others during the preseason

Jim Schwartz, Detroit Lions

Schwartz just so happens to be one of the better preseason plays, posting a 12-4 SU and 11-4 ATS mark since 2009, so turning up the intensity during the exhibition slate shouldn’t be too much of a stretch. Schwartz is under the microscope in the Motor City after Detroit suffered a serious regression in 2012, going 4-12 SU and 6-10 ATS, after posting 10 wins in 2011. A poor start – preseason or regular season – could spark the fire under Schwartz’s seat.

Jason Garrett, Dallas Cowboys

Jerry Jones has done just about everything but ax his head coach, taking the offensive playbook from Garrett and handing it to new coordinator Bill Callahan. Dallas hasn’t been a great preseason bet in recent years, boasting a 5-3 SU and 3-5 ATS record during Garrett’s time as head coach. Cowboys fans shouldn’t expect wins this preseason. Dallas is working in two new coordinators, switching from the 3-4 to the 4-3 Cover 2 and has even introduced a Pistol look to the offense.

Mike Smith, Atlanta Falcons

Atlanta should be more concerned about winning games at the end of the year – after numerous postseason flops – but the Falcons’ fan base is pissed after last season and has had a bad taste in its mouth since blowing a 17-0 lead in the NFC Championship. Smith can provide a bit of mouthwash with a solid preseason. Atlanta has been horrid in tuneup tilts the past two years, with a 1-7 SU and 2-6 ATS count, while Smith is 7-13 SU and 8-10-2 ATS during his preseason career.

Bill Belichick, New England Patriots

Belichick is in no danger of being fired and spends about as much time worrying about the preseason scoreboard as he does picking out his sideline outfit every Sunday. However, after the summer the Patriots had – losing Welker and Woodhead, Gronkowski’s surgeries, Hernandez’s murder arrest – New England football fans need something to cheer for. Belichick was 1-3 SU and 0-4 ATS last summer and boasts an 8-12 SU and 6-13-1 ATS record over the past five preseasons.

NFL training camp notes and rumors

Injuries

The injury bug bit hard in the first few days of training camp. The Denver Broncos lost starting center Dan Koppen for the season to a torn ACL and Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert was carted off the field after spraining his ankle.

The Seattle Seahawks could be without new WR Percy Harvin for a while after he suffered a slight tear in his labrum and the Philadelphia Eagles won’t have WR Jeremy Maclin for 2013 after he tore his ACL.

“I just watch for injuries especially those on the offensive line,” says a capper for Doc’s Sports. “Having a banged-up line creates major issues for the quarterback and running back and it may take a few weeks for the backups to get up to par. If a team suffered a key offensive line injury it may be worth a look fading that team the first couple of weeks.”

NFC East bettors will also be keeping a watch on Robert Griffin III’s wonky knee and if the Washington Redskins’ dynamic QB will be ready to go – or even at 100 percent – come the season opener versus Philadelphia on Monday Night Football.

New coaches, new schemes

Eight teams have a new head coach, 13 have a new offensive coordinator and a dozen squads welcome a new defensive coordinator. Paying attention to how these teams adapt to their new coaches can pay off when Week 1 rolls around.

“When new OCs and DCs are brought in, it's usually because of either a new head coaching change or a change made out of necessity,” says pro capper Marc Lawrence. “They often times bring new playbooks, and as a result there is a new learning curve on each side of the ball.”

The most notable coaching swap was the Eagles’ hire of former Oregon skipper Chip Kelly, who brings his high-octane offense to the pros. Other teams and new hires under the microscope are the Cleveland Browns and new OC Norv Turner and Monte Kiffin calling the defensive shots in Dallas.

“This season there are a lot of interesting story lines involving new schemes for teams,” says Doc’s Sports. “Dallas is switching back to a 4-3 defense after nearly a decade in the 3-4. And not just any 4-3, but a Cover-2 scheme, which has seemingly fallen out of favor in recent seasons.”

Bettors should also make note of current NFL coaches on the hot seat and their demeanor heading into training camp. Bruce Marshall points the finger at Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz, who is coming off a disappointing 4-12 SU and 6-10 ATS. Marshall says the fear of losing their job can motivate these coaches to pull out all the stops in the early season, and even press for victories in the preseason.

Quarterback situations

There are plenty of QB controversies brewing after the first weekend of training camp.

Of course, the New York Jets’ highly-publicized battle between Mark Sanchez and rookie Geno Smith has hogged the headlines this summer. But Buffalo, Philadelphia, Oakland and Jacksonville also have some tough calls to make under center.

“These are the teams where there's no true starter named yet,” says Will Rogers. “Whoever emerges will obviously have a significant impact on that team's respective season.”

Some cappers tab specific No. 1 quarterbacks and track their progress through training camp. Covers Experts’ Will Rogers has eyes for Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Josh Freeman and how hot his coaching staff is for him at the end of the summer.

“Rumor has it that the current coaching staff isn't in love with him, and why should they be given the way he finished last season?,” says Rogers. “They drafted Mike Glennon out of NC State as well, making matters more dicey.”

Even with the addition of Wes Welker and another camp to fine tune timing with the receivers, prop bettors expect Manning to throw for less than 4,750.5 yards in 2013. Last year, in his first season with the Broncos, Peyton posted 4,659 passing yards.

Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys – Total Passing Yards (Under 4,725.5)

There was a coup in Arlington this offseason, with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones ripping the playbook out of head coach Jason Garrett’s hands and leaving the offense to Bill Callahan. That could lead to less deep looks for Romo and a more balanced attack. Dallas is even utilizing a pistol offense in camp this summer.

Marshawn Lynch, Seattle Seahawks – Total Rushing Yards (Under 1,475.5)

With Russell Wilson’s expanded role in the offense after such a great rookie campaign, prop bettors are expecting a swing in the offense. Seattle added speedster Percy Harvin and the ground game could suffer. Lynch rushed for 1,590 yards, so oddsmakers are already adjusting for a demotion.

Adrian Peterson, Minnesota Vikings – Total Rushing Yards (Over 1,750)

So what is “All Day” going to do for an encore? After flirting with the single-season rushing record, Peterson isn’t expected to get close to the 2,097 yards he rumbled for last year. But bettors believe he’ll at least get more than 1,750, with 82 percent of this prop’s action leaning over.

Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers – Most TD Passes

Rodgers connected for 39 TD passes in 2012 and had 45 throws find pay dirt in 2011. He’s involved in as many as eight QB-versus-QB matchups for most TD passes and is drawing the major of action in most of those props. Rodgers is a 3.5-TD fave over Tom Brady, a 1.5-TD fave vs. Drew Brees and a 7.5-TD fave against Eli Manning.

E.J. Manuel, Buffalo Bills – NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year

Action on the former FSU star has move Manuel from +1,200 to +600 to win the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2013. Buffalo has a QB battle on its hands with Manuel trying to win the No. 1 gig over Kevin Kolb. Rams rookie WR Tavon Austin is the RoY fave at +300.

Some things to think about for tonites Hall of Fame game


Odds

The books opened the Cowboys as big as 1.5-point favorites for this neutral-site game but action on the Dolphins has pushed the spread all the way to Dallas +2.5. The total opened at as high as 34.5 and has been bet down to 33 points heading into the weekend.

Hall of Fame Game Trends

The New Orleans Saints beat the Arizona Cardinals 17-10 as 3-point favorites in the 2012 Hall of Fame Game. Favorites are 9-6 SU and 7-6-2 SU ATS since 1996 with those games going 8-7 over/under. Four of the last six Hall of Fame Games have played under the total, with the 2011 HoF Game cancelled due to the NFL lockout.

Dallas is 1-3 SU all-time in the Hall of Fame Game, with a 2-0 ATS record and 1-1 O/U mark with spreads available. Miami boasts a 0-3 SU mark all-time in the HoF Game, going 0-1-1 ATS and 1-1 O/U with odds available. These teams met in Week 4 of the 2012 preseason, with the Cowboys winning 30-13 as 2.5-point home favorites. Dallas and Miami have met eight times in the regular season since 1987, with the teams splitting those meetings 4-4 SU and ATS and going 2-6 over/under.

Capping the QBs

Dallas quarterback Tony Romo will not play in Sunday’s Hall of Fame Game, still recovering from having surgery to remove a cyst on his back this summer. Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said that even if Romo was suiting up, he would only see one or two series and would be limited in pass attempts.

The other reason Romo is sitting out is the shaky shape of the Dallas offensive line. The Cowboys protection is still a work in progress and hasn’t looked sharp in camp. That could mean a long night for backups Kyle Orton, Nick Stephens and Alex Tanney. Orton has digressed as Dallas’ second stringer and Stephens is fighting off Tanney, who could be a surprise star this preseason. He’s freakishly athletic and has great arm strength and accuracy.

Miami will give No. 1 Ryan Tannehill some work during Sunday’s game but head coach Joe Philbin is tight lipped about how many snaps his second-year passer will take. He passed for 103.5 yards on 19.5 attempts per game in the preseason last year.

“We’re going to evaluate the practice tape and then we’re going to make a decision in regard to playing time tomorrow as to who’s going to be getting the majority of the snaps and the guidelines,” Philbin told the Palm Beach Post. “We’ll have a guideline of ‘X’ amount of snaps.”

The Dolphins have Matt Moore and Pat Devlin behind Tannehill. Moore was the Fins No. 1 QB in 2011, putting up 2,497 yards, 16 touchdowns and 9 interceptions in 12 games, going 6-6 SU in those contests. He’s regarded as one of the best backups in the NFL heading into 2013. Devlin has impressed this summer and has shown the ability to make plays with his legs, which could come in handy with Miami’s offensive line missing some key cogs.

Dallas notes

- Romo isn’t the only Cowboys starter sitting out Sunday’s exhibition kickoff. According to reports out of Dallas, numerous first stringers will pass on Canton. One of those starters expected to be on the field is WR Dez Bryant, who returned to practice this week after sitting out with a sore hip. Bryant, who reeled in 1,382 yards and 12 touchdowns, is primed for a breakout season in 2013.

- Dallas is working in a new offensive coordinator in Bill Callahan and a new defensive coordinator in Monte Kiffin. Callahan is throwing some wrinkles into the offensive playbook, copying what the New England Patriots have done with their tight end sets. He’s also flirted with a pistol offense to jumpstart the running game behind RB DeMarco Murray, who when healthy can break the back of a defense. The stop unit is switching up from the 3-4 to the 4-3 with Cover 2 schemes. Many players, like DeMarcus Ware moving from LB to DE, are switching positions. Dallas takes the new defense for a test drive Sunday night.

Miami notes

- Miami was 0-4 SU and ATS in the preseason last year, focusing more on adjusting to Philbin’s new sets and getting Tannehill some time under center. This time around, the Dolphins are out to win some exhibition games and show they can contend in the AFC East. Philbin’s main focus this summer is playing with speed, which should be easy with some new additions to the WR corps. Miami brought in WRs Mike Wallace and Brandon Gibson as well as TE Dustin Keller. Wallace and fellow receiver Brian Hartline hope to play Sunday after returning from injuries this week.

- The Dolphins running game has no face with Reggie Bush leaving for Detroit. Running backs Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas are expected to get the bulk of the carries this season, but fellow rushers Mike Gillislee and Marcus Thigpen will share the load Sunday. The rushing attack could have a tough time gaining traction behind a thinning offensive line. Offensive coordinator Mike Sherman told reporters he’ll likely roll out his best five-player combo, ignoring set positions on the o-line

The Dolphins have more ?? to answer tonite. Their offensive line is not at a quality NFL level. This game actually could get ugly for both offenses. I just don't see much point production from Miami. I don't feel comfortable taking the Under because this could be a game with a couple defensive scores but I will take a chance on the Under as the offense is always last to play their best ball. I think Dallas is better team as of today and like them as the small dog.

One needs to read and gather as much ''inside' info from the local team papers and try and get inside the coaches head and see who and for how long are the better players expected to play, what the coaches are looking for such as which players do they need to look at and also does one owner want to win more than the other owner such as in jerry jones...and keep in mind that the Unders hit much more consistently in the early games.

I agree that this is a wild card play and must be played as such. We we ''old football folks'' have to get ''warmed up'' and be ready for the start of the season and I for one cant wait. While baseball is my money maker, football is my 1st love and I cant wait. And I dont think there is such a thing in the Cowboys owners vocabulary May be wrong but I think they play well and still look at a lot of personnel

I'm already down on the Saints -3 for a half(probably add another half closer to kickoff) for one this Fri nite. Strong preseason trend we can follow with the Saints as their high-octane offense sure gears up as the preseason progresses. In the past three seasons the Saints have seen the over go a perfect 6-0 in their last 2 preseason games of the year with 51, 57, 60, 41, 51, and 61 points scored. And we all know that AndyReid now with KC, doesnt give a damn about preseason wins...at all

Eight coaching changes coming into the 2013 season.


Arizona - Bruce Arians - was the former Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator - Arians filled in for head coach Chuck Pagano while he battled leukemia, and went 9-3 in his absence.

Buffalo - Doug Maronne - Syracuse head coach for the past 4 years - his prior NFL experience was with the New Orleans back in 2008 as the Saints offensive coordinator.

Chicago - Marc Trestman - Former coach of the Montreal Alouettes - NFL experience as an Offensive coordinator for the 49ers and Raiders.

Cleveland - Rob Chudzinski - Offensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers - however the offense will be turned over to Norv Turner.

Jacksonville - Gus Bradley - Former defensive coordinator the last four seasons of the league-leading Seahawks defense.

Kansas City - Andy Reid - head coach of the Eagles the last 14 years.

Philadelphia - Chip Kelly - head coach of the Oregon Ducks - offensive genius of the Ducks high octane offense - first NFL coaching job.

San Diego - Mike McCoy - is the former Broncos offensive coordinator for the Broncos and helped lead Denver to the playoffs the past two seasons with two totally different quarterbacks' styles.





Preseason or not, a few coaches need to quieten the rumors. Putting together a winning record in the warm-ups can cool a coach’s seat and appease a nervous fanbase, easing the pressure heading into Week 1.

Four coaches who possibly need to win more than others during the preseason

Jim Schwartz, Detroit Lions

Schwartz just so happens to be one of the better preseason plays, posting a 12-4 SU and 11-4 ATS mark since 2009, so turning up the intensity during the exhibition slate shouldn’t be too much of a stretch. Schwartz is under the microscope in the Motor City after Detroit suffered a serious regression in 2012, going 4-12 SU and 6-10 ATS, after posting 10 wins in 2011. A poor start – preseason or regular season – could spark the fire under Schwartz’s seat.

Jason Garrett, Dallas Cowboys

Jerry Jones has done just about everything but ax his head coach, taking the offensive playbook from Garrett and handing it to new coordinator Bill Callahan. Dallas hasn’t been a great preseason bet in recent years, boasting a 5-3 SU and 3-5 ATS record during Garrett’s time as head coach. Cowboys fans shouldn’t expect wins this preseason. Dallas is working in two new coordinators, switching from the 3-4 to the 4-3 Cover 2 and has even introduced a Pistol look to the offense.

Mike Smith, Atlanta Falcons

Atlanta should be more concerned about winning games at the end of the year – after numerous postseason flops – but the Falcons’ fan base is pissed after last season and has had a bad taste in its mouth since blowing a 17-0 lead in the NFC Championship. Smith can provide a bit of mouthwash with a solid preseason. Atlanta has been horrid in tuneup tilts the past two years, with a 1-7 SU and 2-6 ATS count, while Smith is 7-13 SU and 8-10-2 ATS during his preseason career.

Bill Belichick, New England Patriots

Belichick is in no danger of being fired and spends about as much time worrying about the preseason scoreboard as he does picking out his sideline outfit every Sunday. However, after the summer the Patriots had – losing Welker and Woodhead, Gronkowski’s surgeries, Hernandez’s murder arrest – New England football fans need something to cheer for. Belichick was 1-3 SU and 0-4 ATS last summer and boasts an 8-12 SU and 6-13-1 ATS record over the past five preseasons.

The first preseason game is almost always a guessing game but one thing i know for sure is that the Titians coaching staff wants to win, while Shanahan knows the drill of just trying to survive these preseason games with the smallest possible damage. No RG and that leave Kirk Cousins and he only goes 1 qrt tonite.And the rest of the game Wash will be just going through the motions on the road imo. Titians and Munchak said when discussing his revamped line that want to see what they can make happen.

byrd...I'm sure that know that nfl preseason must be capped completely differently than a regular season game,
One needs to read and gather as much ''inside' info from the local team papers and try and get inside the coaches head and see who and for how long are the better players expected to play, what the coaches are looking for such as which players do they need to look at and also does one owner want to win more than the other owner such as in jerry jones...and keep in mind that the Unders hit much more consistently in the early games.

Thanks for the advice. Most of my preseason "capping" comes from the QB rotations as well as coaching records in the preseason. I'll try to incorporate more from now on.
