Monday Bases Memorial Day Discussion

Air Raid Returns!
Well yesterday was the craziest day of baseball thus far with 4 extra inning games, and 7 walkoff wins. I am glad I was on the right side of most of those as it all finally came together yesterday. On to today the early action looks like this.

Toronto sends Marcum to the hill to complete the 4 game sweep and try to hand the Royals their 8th straight defeat. The Royals are obviously scuffling right now as outside of game 3 in Boston where they put up 8 runs they have a combined 6 runs in their previous 6 games. Not sure I want to get in the way of either teams streaks at this point....
Teams are combined 35 overs 64 unders on the year

Arizona @ Atlanta
Interested to see Chipper's status as Webb looks awfully cheap for a guy thats 9-1 and an offense that may be getting in a groove and seems to hit while he is on the mound. Braves one of the best home teams in all of baseball, this one will decide the series.
Lean Zona and Under

Bergmann since being recalled from triple A has yet to give up a run in 14 innings of work. Now they are dogs at home again definately worth a look.

Dodgers coming off a big win, Cubs coming off two gutwrenching losses. Billingsly has been dominant lately will look to play LA here or nothing.
Note: Cubs are 9-3 vs Pitt this year and just 20-18 vs the rest of the league.

I will be on Rasner and the Yanks as well as this is my favorite play of the day. Huge win today and the Orioles are beginning to go in the tank, no way they could keep up the level they were playing at when they run that lineup out there everyday.

Will always consider Webb at anything under 130 versus anyone.. thinking JJ will give the Braves a quality outing facing quite a few righties - should see a low scoring 4-2 type game imo

Dodgas travel a ways coming off a win and now face one of the hottest pitchers in the NL...makes me wanna grab the cubs at that price, but too many righties makes me think runs will come tough against Chad. CBills got it done as a dog last time out

Can't really see the streaking Jays fall at home with Marcum on the bump. Keep fading the Royals. May lay that chalk or parlay it with the Rays

Vazquez gettin' it done with a strike out per and tossing out quality outing after qaulity outing makes me like the CWS laying a short price.. both pens are fresh with CC and Contreras working deep. Indians facing Vazquez third time round, roughing him up in the first one and getting baffled in the second. CWS got to Byrd pretty quickly last meeting

Like a guy who throws strikes and induces ground balls in Rasner..Think the Yanks get it done facing Olson again who seems to have lost his command. A-Rod back with lefty on hill

Like Marlins/Mets OVER 9... Mets got too many lefties up against Nolasco and the Marlins are swinging it well. Pelfrey likes to rely on his fastball too much imo. Think Marlins tag him.

Boston travels to Seattle after getting swept... hard to pass up the King at that price. Think that Colon outing was a fluke, though he did seem to have alright velocity. Lean Mariners, but Boston is bound to win sooner or later one would think

Like the Rangers/Rays OVER 8... Ponson returns to his old self against all those lefties. thinking the Rangers get 3-4 off Kazmir after facing a similar pitcher in CC second day in a row. Rays should score eight themselves

I am also not willing to drink the Sidney Ponson kool-aid just yet.
Kazmir has yet to have a bad start since returning from the DL, he has also been very efficient with his pitches. In years past he has struggled with throwing a ton of pitches. Looking at Over 8 as i think the Rays can put up some runs and think Texas may be able to do their part as well.
7-4 final

LAA/Det Over 9.5 also has peeked my interest, couple of gascans take the hill. Which Detroit team shows up is the real question gotta think Granderson may be getting it going. Angels bats have been extremely quiet but Kenny should be the perfect medicine.

Granderson just 17 for 82 .207 and just 4 extra base hits in the month of May

sorry about under leans for the ARI-ATL game, Reynolds is behind the plate, which is a friend to OVERs everywhere. I agree that Webb looks great at that price, but the Bravos are absolutely great at home.

...i think it'll be very difficult to fade the ChiSox as well, they seem to be playing GREAT baseball right now especially with Vazquez on the bump.

..it also may make sense to play the FADE KENNY ROGERS card tomorrow with the Angels, and Seattle looks good at home against the BoSox. Keep in mind the Red Sox have been involved in 4 straight sweeps (L to BAL, W vs. MIL & KC, L to OAK)

Agree that Sheets is a bit overpriced. Moyer looks to be too, but the Rox are dropping like flies... Holliday joins Barmes and Hawpe on the shelf

Yeah no way I am goin against this Phillies lineup right now. I think I am gonna ride every Phillie over against a righty until further notice. Those left handed sticks are just potent

Leaning NYY/Balty over 9... Balty roughed up Rasner twice last year, but Rasner bounced back strong last week... things should be tougher second time round on Balty's turf. Markakis 7-8 lifetime off Rasner. A-Rod went deep off Olson last meeting.. don't expect him to see anything fat. Tough spot mentally for Olson at his age after giving up 8 hits through 2.2 ip last game @ NYY

sorry about under leans for the ARI-ATL game, Reynolds is behind the plate, which is a friend to OVERs everywhere. I agree that Webb looks great at that price, but the Bravos are absolutely great at home.

Small additions though, if I may.

  • Atlanta have not lost consecutive games since dropping three straight at Pittsburgh from 9th-11th earlier this month.
  • After that, they went W-L-W-L-W-L, zig zag, before engaging into a 5 game winning streak.
  • In the series with Arizona, however, there has been change of rhythm. Atlanta have lost theirs, getting outscored 21-7, while Arizona have generated some serious offense following a 10 day slump.
  • Chipper Jones (.417 season BA, .440 at home), Brian McCann and Yunel Escobar are listed as day-to-day.

So even though Atlanta have been dominant at home and Jurrjens has looked great, I think he will have a couple of rough starts, perhaps starting from today. First of all, he has allowed a hit per inning, which is much worse than Webb, but has managed to pitch through jams, so far.

Webb has finally lost a game after winning 9 straight, but I think Arizona could be a good bet here.

Curious to hear what SportsNut has to say about the Yankee game. Rasner did get shelled last year against the O's but they are in a slump here and the Yanks managed to overcome a 0-23 trend last night, the Yankees have won ZERO out of last 23 games in which they were trailing after 7 innings, and they managed to overcome a 2-5 deficit last night in a come from behind win against Seattle.

I'm aware laying road chalk in a situation like this on a pitcher that has been solid but can be a ticking time bomb is a little risky, but looking at these lineups, I don't see how Olson stops Yankee bats.

Also, found an interesting trend, trying to check if it's true.

Baltimore are 1-6 in last 7 Monday games against the Yankees.

Rasner has looked great, do they support him here? How does that win last night affect the Yanks? Do they:

a) push even harder to step up today and get back to .500
b) have a small letdown following a sweep in a home/road switch

Other thoughts:

Sidney Ponson is one pitcher I am looking to regress in the following period. This guy has been awful last season, only to step up big time this year. He's making a road start, the Rays are the real deal, 10 games above .500, Kazmir an ace, a proven stud (not that it matters that much, but current Texas hitters are 3 for 30 off Kazmir), the price is steep but laying 1.5 seems reasonable. Still thinking though, not going to make any plays this early.

De La Rosa road ERA of 7.71, his numbers v Philly, .368 BAA.
May: 7.78 ERA, 1-2. 3 games at home so far, 1 road game, lasted 4.2 innings for 7 hits and 4 runs in Arizona. Worried about Philly being the obvious play here, Moyer is definitely hittable, 5.40 home ERA, .342 BAA.

It's tough to take the over one day after they scored 15 runs, and the line is putting me off...

Toronto with Marcum could be a lean, -1 perhaps.

I am half asleep so take it fwiw...

KC @ Toronto :

Tomko is a better pitcher in day games but when he goes on 5 days rest which he does here the numbers get scary .....

Hard to not like Tor even trying for a 4 game sweep and -1.5 RL could provide some great value. Concerned to see how Marcum bounces back here. He started Sunday only went 1 inning cause of rain delay then turned around to start 2 days later . Thinking Tor -1.5 RL could provide value and the over as well....

@ Atlanta :

Couple things stand out . ATL needs this to split the series and Zona to split ypad trip , Webbs last 2 starts vs ATL were shutouts but Webb has been somewhat medicore ( for him) of late allowing 3 runs or more in 5 of 6 starts. Not much support for Webb away vs weaker teams then ATL 1, 2 , 4 , 7, 4 . Big inning was the 5th 1 out away from leading 3-2 and official the Backs loaded the bases after 2 quick outs and Byrnes effectively ended the game with a grand slam. So margin is misleading IMO. Jurrjens has been real solid with all teams scoring 4 or less at home vs him. Both guys have good day splits. Jim Reynolds behind the dish has a home bias and Webb lost both his starts with Reynolds back there 5-0 at home and 8-2 away . Besides the recent offensive struggles vs RHP only 1 run vs Campillo and Nolasco they Nacks are 4-8 away vs RHP..so thinking ATLANTA ...dont think Webb is cheap here actually h eshould be dogged comsidering the facts . Jurrjens real solid pitching and there 4-8 away record vs RGPs plus the ATL home record. Zona lost 5 of 6 away vs RHP onlu winning 2-1 @ SD , they have hit 181 away vs RHP and 178 last 10 games vs RHP. Runs scored 1 , 1 , 4 , 2 , 7 , 6 , 3 , 8 , 2, 5 ,4 and so on..vs RH away.

@ Balt . While my Yanks are HOT two things remain. Still they have a terrrible track record away vs LHSP and a youngster like Olsen is doubted but he should be at his best throwing at home. The other thing is Yanks here are just a few pennies cheaper then they were hosting Balt and Olsen with Rasber. Seenms expensive somewjat...so probably passing or taking Balt +1.5 RL

@ Milw 0 Thinking under and not sure about a side...but Nats will be w/o Zimmerman leaving a huge hole so possibly Milw or 1st 5 ML

under in Cleveland?

Byrd solid at home, Vasquez solid, CLE bats slumping, CLE has been under machine so far...
8.5 seems reasonable.

Actually I think its a better spot ofr Olsen here then last cause if he is going to be rattled its going to be in his 1st start vs NYY especially if its at the Stadium here he should be comfortable IMO. With Rasner always tough to weigh his stats because he has limited starts and alot of starts he gets long layoffs inbewteen which makes pitching here on 5 days interesting . Actually really impressive what he did vs Balt last time because he hadnt pitched in forever. While in 2007 tough to weigh cause its his 1st start and it came on 4-08 so it could have been 10 days since he pitched and its his 1st start of the year. If you look and exclude the star vs NYM which he got hurt guy has done a nice job as a s spot starter so far . Only poor starts vs Balt because Markakis and Millar plus a clucth 3 run Hr by Hernandez in 06.

Also remember NYY away vs LHP track record is terrible and today the faced a LH and didnt do much again vs Washburn which the same happened vs Burres though they roped Bedard. Burres goes tmrw and I think Balt has the advantages here , NYY could be looking past Olsen because they hit him and Burres has been TROUBLE! Orioles hitting has improved somewhat scoring 4 last 2 games. Remember Balt gave 3 solid players in Roberts , Markakis and Hernandez mental days off on Sat or IMO benchings to which they lost but responded today by playing well IMO.

Huge UNDER trends here although past 3 NYY day games went Over Santana , Bedard abd Washburn...

sleeptime...see you guys in the AM:cheers:

editing:

Baltimore are 1-6 in last 7 AT HOME Monday games against the Yankees. Anyways I think I'll skip as well, this has a no bet written all over it. a bad line on the Yanks and the O's are not bettable at this spot for me.

Very likely playing Atlanta first 5. Need line ups first. If Chipper is out that is not an end to the play but a big reduction in amount.

hey guys, just some food for thought, from my perspective:

boston @ seattle
- red sox only 3-10 in the last 13 meetings in seattle
- colon's 1st start was at home vs slumping Royals and yet, he managed to surrender 2 runs in 5 innings
- mariners batting .302 (90-for-298) with 19 doubles, 1 triple and 9 HRs vs big man
- hernandez better pitcher at home, but pitching on 8 days rest!
- bos batting only .219 (16-for-73) with 1 double, a triple and a HR vs hernandez
- both pens terrible lately (~ 5.00 era)
- (a trend) bos 3-11 on the road with a money line of -100 to -125

chicago ws @ cleveland
- vasquez 2-0 (3-0), 3.72 era (19.1inn) .282 obp 1.09 whip over his last 3 starts
- his last 6 starts in cleveland 3-3 (team w-l), 3.85 era
- white sox pen supreme both on the road and lately (~2.30 era)
- paul byrd is like dr.jekyll (at home) and mr.hyde (on road)
- byrd's last 4 starts vs cws in cleveland: 4-0, 3.00 era
- cleveland pen terrible lately (6+ era)
- both teams vs opposing pitchers batting combined .236 in ~200 AB
- white sox are 4-7 in their last 11 games in cleveland

detroit @ la angels
- tigers alot better in night games (17-14 vs 4-14 in day games) and they've been averaging one whole run more compared to their day games
- angels slightly better in day games :D
- both pitchers terrible, although garland's been very good lately
- rogers getting insane run support in this spot (~6.8 rpg)
- garland getting pretty low run support in this spot (~3.7 rpg)
- both teams got pretty good numbers vs opposing pitchers in 220+ AB
- tigers are 2-7 in their last 9 games in anaheim

yankees @ baltimore
- rasner was 4-0, 0.87 era in triple-A, and now he's 3-0, 1.89 era for yankees
- rasner's been pretty much yankees best pitcher in the last few weeks
- rasner's been getting ~6 runs per start in this spot, and he's been great in both his day and road starts (only ~.200 baa ~ .230 obp and ~0.830 whip)
- yankees pen great lately and very good on the road this season
- olson on 5 days rest: 1-1, 10.13 era .421 baa
- yankees are 5-6 in their last 11 meetings in baltimore

texas @ tampa
- texas 20-15 in night games, averaging half run more compared to their day games where they're still only 6-11 after yesterday's win over indians
- ponson better in his road and night starts, where he's been getting bunch of run support (~10 runs per start!)
- ponson's last start in tampa (with twins): 1-0, 1.29 era
- something about ponson's change in pitching and his mental stuff from my notes:

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire remarked before the game that Ponson has stopped trying to believe he's still a strikeout pitcher. Ponson has now allowed one earned run in four starts this season.

"I basically didn't do nothing," Ponson said, deferring credit to his teammates for their 17 hits and sound defense -- especially sharp plays by Ian Kinsler, Michael Young and Brandon Boggs.

"It's a team concept, and they know that I pitch to contact. I don't like to strike people out. I know that if I work fast, good things will happen," Ponson said.

"He just goes after hitters, and that's what he did tonight," Kinsler said of Ponson's "no-nonsense" approach to pitching.

Last year, after getting cut by the Twins, Ponson went home and cleared his head without thinking much about baseball. Looks like it worked.

"He's stronger than last year, and that's key for him," said Michael Cuddyer, who went 0-for-4 and saw his average drop to .217 while Ponson's ERA sunk to 2.95.

-
texas pen over their last 10 games have only 2.70 era, unlike rays pen which one's been averaging 4.18 era lately
- kazmir's been extremely efficient lately in limiting both opponent's batting average, on-base percentage and free passes
- kazmir getting only 3 runs per start of run support in this situation
- in kazmir's last 2 starts vs texas he's 2-0, 1.80 era but 4 more runs were unearned, so if we count those in, it makes it 2-0, 5.40 era
- texas hitting only .125 ba vs kazmir combined in 24 AB with no extra base hits so far, BUT...

... boggs (.253), byrd (.207), catalanotto (.275), hamilton (.333) and murphy (.291) haven't seen kazmir yet! lately, those guys have been really hot, combining for .346 ba (37-for-107) with 8 doubles, 2 homers and 12 rbi.

- really interesting fact is that josh hamilton will face the team which drafted him back in 1999 but never gave him chance to play for them (a little payback, maybe?)

- rays batting combined .263 vs ponson in 95 at-bats
- (a trend) tampa is 5-0 as a home favorite of -150 to -200 this season, and 14-0 over the last 3 seasons!
- rangers are 3-6 in their last 9 games in tampa

arizona @ atlanta
- braves still much better day-team (11-6) than in his night games (16-17) while averaging more than half run more in their day-time games
- both webb and jurrjens great this season both great on 5 days rest
- arizona averaging only .180 ba .280 obp and 3.3 rpg vs rhp on road/last 10 games
- braves will be facing a rhp for the 2nd day in a row after facing lefties in first 2 games of this series
- braves averaging .298 ba .375 obp 6.7 rpg vs rhp at home/last 10 games
- both pens great
- chipper jones was helf out with back spams in sunday's game, his status day-to-day for this game
- brian mccann left sunday's game in the 8th inning with heat-related symptoms. cox said he should start today

florida @ ny mets
- marlins far better in night games (23-15 vs 6-5 in day games, with those two wins on sunday included)
- nolasco pitching great lately, marlins won 2 of his last 3 starts
- nolasco getting ~5 runs per start in this situation
- nolasco slightly better on 5 days rest (.238 baa)
- both team's pens great
- mets are only 2-6 in pelfrey's starts
- pelfrey better at home (but still allowing not so good .265 baa .341 obp)
- pelfrey much worse in night starts (5.29 era .338 baa .407 obp 1.82 whip)
- mets hitters combined .421 vs nolasco in 57 at-bats with 6 extra base hits
- marlins are 6-3 in their last 9 meetings in ny

hey guys, just some food for thought, from my perspective:

boston @ seattle

- texas pen over their last 10 games have only 2.70 era, unlike rays pen which one's been averaging 4.18 era lately

- marlins are 6-3 in their last 9 meetings in ny

great info

I think there are only 2 ways to attack the Jays game ...Toronto -1.5 RL or KC ML . After further review I prefer the KC ML. Basically I didnt realize the slippage of Marcum in day games which I cant weight that heavily with such little background on the situation but seems to be a clear difference. Also Aaron Hill gets the day off and as I said tough to tell how Marcum's arm bounces back after starting Sunday going 1 inning thn rain getting him pulled , to which he started 2 days later and went nearly 7 innings(112 pitches).

Granted KC sucks on Mondays and jays are 12-2 in day games know this . Marcum started 4-21 vs Det on a Mon afternoon early start just like today facing what was I believe an 0-10 day team in DET and lost 5-1. To which he went 5.2 innings 5h 5r 4 Er 1 Hr 4 bb 2 Ks. His next start was the game @ philly when he lasted just 1 inning because of the extended rain delay. He went 1 inning allowed 2 hits 2 runs 2er 1 hr 1 bb 3 Ks....so it appears there is something to this....Some might think end of road trip KC doesnt care but I disagree KC played hard yesterday and wouldnt see why that would change probably a situational edge for them to avoid the sweep and at least grab a WIN before the trip ends.

Playing KC and over 8.5 .....BOL

So went KC +160 and Over 8.5 -110 same amount . Then made small plays on KC 1st 5 Inn +160 and 1st Inn score Yes Prop Even....and also stuck to my guns playing ATL at a variety of prices for a few units . Nice to see that line correct itself ...

since my site is down, i parlayed the Braves and the Yanks and then straight bet the Angels on Centsports.com

...good luck guys

Also played Orioles +1.5 RL -135 couple units and over 9.5 nyy for 1 unit. Playing Milw for 2 units @ -140 thinking about that under as Nats really resting alot of players....

Went Cubbies 1st 5 and ML plus the under 8.5 despite some wind blowing out. Should be alot of swings and misses...BOL all

Okay so again I see alot of the bad arguement of Phillies are overpriced , Moyer isnt worth 2 to 1 and Col has value?

So explain to me how COL has value? Then explain how you are betting on Moyer ? I thought you would be backing the Phillies team with Moyer as your SP?

Rockies are 8-16 away . Which means they have won 33% of there away games . We know they have suffered massive amounts of injuries of late . So if you get Col at +200 then technically the odds equal there road winning pct = 33%. Most Rockeis players didnt get +200. Rockies are 13-20 at night and Phillly 21-14 at night.

Rockies are minus Holliday , Atkins , Barnes ,Hawpe . They won yesterday thanks to a Reyes boot and then 3 run Hr which was there 1st hit of the game.

Moyer doesnt pitch well vs COL? I see a CG loss at home in 2006 where he went the distance allowing 2 runs and lost 2-0. Then he pitchd @ Coors in 2007 and was roughed up 5 runs in 5+ innings to which he rebounded in the playoffs by going 6 innings @ Coors allowing 1 run. This year he has 6 of 10 starts being high quality. He lasted at least 6 innings in each and allowed 2 runs or less in those except the start he went 6.2 inn and allowed 3 runs. His night starts ar much better thenhis day starts seems to be atrend with soft tossing lhp remember Glavine's splits?

Philly is 12-7 vs LHSP and Col is 5-5 . The healthy Rockies avged 3.7 runs away and 4.1 vs LHSP. Philly avgs 4.9 at home and 5.7 vs LHSP. DeLaRosa has been serviceable last few outings but his longest outing is 5.2 inning so expect the pen to play a role. Well if you saw the game yesterday the Rockies basically decided that Cook would decide the game and not the pen. Which speaks to the confidence thye have in therepen. Think Fuentes blew back to back saves SFG and then NY which they won in extras.

Atkins vs LHP 18-33 4Hrs .545 AVG
Holliday 11-34 2hrs .324 AVG
Barmes .250 2hrs
Ianneta not laying 4-10

Rockies 33-153 with 1 hr with todays lineup vs LHSP ...missing 9 of its 10 hrs ....

So where is the value in COL? Can Moyer get roughed up? Yes he could but he is coming off a couple solid starts and has been solid in his 4 night starts. Phillies hit LHP better and have the much better lineup. Philly has the edge in closers.....so where is the value ? price alone? Well the games @ COL were PKs which tells you if they were in Philly they would be about -170 but that was before injuries ...:shake:

and Col is 1-3 away vs LHSP edging Houston 3-2 vs Wandy with ACE Cook...0,3,2,4 games started by LH away so playing the udner small as well..

Played Cle look at Byrd at home only Giambi got to him. How is Chi favored only -135 same matchup last week @ Chi??

Good luck Tuck and BC....

Need NYM ML and Philly ML to finish off 2 4 team parlays ...

Philly ML , Under 10.5 Philly , Cle ML (1.5 units) and Mets -1.5 +150

BOLall

and Spillsborough was the only guy who worried me...

The fact Philly won 15-6 maybe makes them look more attractive but they have to score today..

Thank you my rule on the old men. I bet pocket change on Phillies minus 2.5 because I refuse to back the over 40 crowd. Moyer quickly gives up 3 runs to a depleted lineup in a night game.

and thankfully DeLaRosa gives it right back to Utley ....fresh start...lets go PHILLY:cheers:

DPs, caught stealings w/less than 2 out costing runs, out at homes. The key signs are not there this is an Over, despite a welter of baserunners

8-4 Phillie right now in the bottom of the fourth. Honestly it makes me mad. we play for money and when we make picks and give advice there is an obligation to the reader to make reasonable choices. What justification was there for all the nonsense on the net. This is major revenge. Last year Colorado hung Phillies. You think Phillies forgot. Doubt they win a game in the series.

I so agree with the revenge angle. I felt Philly would love to kick them while they are done...to bad Mutts cant get a hit with MOB they would be winning ....:shake:

any plays @ LAA

Just went over both late games although LAA seems to be a questionable over. Garland get shit by DET but has pitched well in his previou shome starts as a WSOX. LAA is 8-2 vs LHP but alot of bats missing here in there lineup.....
