Sorry I missed the conversation yesterday. It was a great one. Thanks to Inzane, Wise, Bank, and Strohs for the responses. GL
I absolutely agree with everything that was said. My take is that I also think the season is too long. 162 games is stupid and always has been. I think they really ruined the game when they had interleague. It's dumb now and who really cares outside of Ohio if Cle plays Cin and most in Ohio couldn't care less. Then they really diluted the game when they had every team play every team during the season, so the World series is a just a rematch of games already played during the season. How can that generate any excitement? Add to the fact that the playoffs take place after football season starts and folks really don't give a shit even when it's the playoffs. And then they take the idea that damn near all the teams get into the playoffs and no one is watching anyway.
Eliminate the mound completely and it still won't help these guys hit. They are taught to guess. All of them. They show talent in the amateur leagues so they get signed then these clown hitting instructors get ahold of them in the minors and teach them to guess and that ruins all but 10% of them. When I played back in the dark ages they didn't do that shit because they didn't have to. You had talent or you wouldn't be there, so they pretty much left you alone. The only thing they ever said was look fastball and take every off speed pitch to the opposite field. But we all knew that. These pitchers are better athletes than we were but they don't have significantly better stuff than in the old days. No, they don't throw faster despite what the talking head say. Their sinkers are harder to hit than we ever saw but these hitters never see a real knuckleball to try to hit. And no, a Knuckle curve is not the same thing. If it's spinning it's not a knuckler. Bottom line is I agree they never choke up which would help them but we never ever swung at a pitch 3 feet out of the strike zone.
With everyone playing everyone, almost everyone in the playoffs, and 162 games there is no longer anything special about this game. I don't see how a season split in half can fix that. And for the love of god quit trying to invent shit. No, people, even young people, don't give a shit about the fake stats you are shoving down everyone's throat. Ball velocity, distance (is it over the fucking fence or not) and whatever the fuck above average means nothing and is boring the shit out of people. Talk about where they are playing a hitter and what that means about where they intend to pitch him and stop trying to make todays players into gods. They are not better than they used to be. No, Otani is not better than Ruth so just stop. Used to be players could hit and it's not because of the pitchers being better today. I'm still trying to figure out all these hitters are hitting around .200 and all of these pitchers have eras above 3.5.
