Minnesota Twins vs. Detroit Tigers
Monday, May 30, 2022 at 1:10 p.m. ET at Comerica Park in Detroit

Who Pitches for Minnesota?

The Twins start Dylan Bundy today.

Bundy's season ERA may make him seem less appealing.

However, his high ERA masks a stronger 3.94 FIP (like ERA but factors out fielding).

He has suffered from a higher BABIP (batting average of balls in play) despite yielding hard contact at a rate well below his career average while inducing soft contact at a greater rate.

What Pitches Does Bundy Throw?

Another bad reason to worry about Bundy's performance today is the fact that he is facing the same lineup a second time in a row.

However, Bundy is the kind of pitcher who can thrive multiple times in a row against the same lineup because he is a somewhat different pitcher in every start.

To explain what I mean, if a pitcher throws the same pitches at more or less the same rate in every start, then he will be easier for the opposing lineup to figure out because he is so repetitive.

Bundy, however, features a nice amount of variety in his arsenal such that opposing lineups see a rather new pitcher in every start.

For example, in Bundy's last start, he threw his slider most frequently.

In the start before, he threw his fastball most often.

In a given start, Bundy may throw three different pitches with over 20 percent frequency.

He may throw all five of his pitches -- his fastball, slider, changeup, sinker, and his least common pitch, the curveball -- with over 10 percent frequency.

I like Bundy today because the Tigers rank 29thin slugging .316 against his four favorite pitches, which make up over 90 percent of his arsenal, from righties.

Who Pitches for Detroit Today?

Detroit starts Beau Brieske today.

Characteristically, Brieske is a strong fly ball pitcher.

One way in which Brieske will try to induce fly balls is by elevating his high-spin fastball.

By generating the appearance of rising action with this pitch, Brieske induces batters to swing underneath it.

How Do Twin Batters Match Up With Brieske?

Twin batters promise to thrive today because they are at their best against fly ball pitching.

Their OPS (on-base plus slugging) is .45 higher against fly ball pitchers than against ground ball pitchers.

Look out, for example, for Carlos Correa, who brings a six-game hitting streak into today's contest.

Correa has had three multi-hit performances in this six-game span.

Baltimore Orioles vs. Boston Red Sox
Monday, May 30, 2022 at 7:10 p.m. ET at Fenway Park in Boston

Who Starts for Baltimore Today?

Baltimore starts Tyler Wells tonight.

Wells has been an awful pitcher to back overall.

But this is most especially true on the road.

In his road starts, the Orioles are 0-5, yielding -5 units.

What Pitches Does Wells Throw?

Primarily, Wells throws a fastball, slider, changeup, and curveball.

These pitches make up 97.2 percent of his arsenal.

Of these pitches, Wells favors his fastball most heavily in terms of frequency.

Not only does he easily throw it most often, but he also throws it a lot against both left- and right-handed batters.

However, he struggles with this pitch.

Opponents are batting .298 and slugging .544 against it this year.

I like the Red Sox because they rank second in slugging against Wells' already vulnerable favorite pitches.

Plus, Boston is hot right now. They've scored a combined total of 43 runs in their past five games.

Who Pitches for Boston?

Ageless wonder Rich Hill starts for the Red Sox today.

Hill is most known for his curveball, but he also throws a fastball almost as often.

He does a masterful job of playing these pitches off each other.

Combined, they make up just over 80 percent of his arsenal.

The O's already look worrisome today because Hill is a lefty and they are one of the worst teams against left-handed pitching.

They also rank 25th in slugging against Hill's favorite pitches from lefties.
