New York Mets vs. Miami Marlins
Friday, June 24, 2022 at 6:40 p.m. ET at loanDepot Park in Miami
Who Starts for the Mets?
New York starts Taijuan Walker today.
He is in a terrible spot for today's game because he tends to perform terribly when facing the same team consecutive times.
One exception happened this year. We should discount this exception because 19 days elapsed between these two starts.
But he faced the Marlins six days ago.
Plus, he faced the Phillies a second straight time within a week.
This start was on May 5, and, in it, the Phillies amassed six earned runs in four innings.
Last year, he faced the Marlins a second straight time and allowed three earned runs in 4.2 innings.
Later, he faced the Pirates consecutive times. In the second start, he allowed five earned runs in a third of an inning.
Again, he faced the Dodgers twice. In that second start, he conceded four earned runs in six innings.
Who Starts for Miami?
Miami starts the elite and regularly superb Sandy Alcantara.
While I dislike his Met counterpart anyways today, Alcantara rarely needs much run support.
He has allowed two earned runs or fewer in all nine of his last nine starts.
Plus, he allowed one earned run or fewer in six of those starts.
Likewise impressively, he endured at least seven innings in each of those starts.
Unlike Walker, Alcantara is in a great spot today because he enjoys superb form, and he is comfortable facing the same lineup consecutive times.
The excellent variety in his four primary pitch arsenal, his high-level velocity, and his strong command evidenced in low walk and home run rates among other stats, make him hard for even the most familiar lineup to deal with.
Houston Astros vs. New York Yankees
Friday, June 24, 2022 at 7:05 p.m. ET at Yankee Stadium in Bronx, New York
Who Starts for Houston?
Houston starts Justin Verlander. That's right, you can get an elite pitcher at plus money today.
Plus, Verlander is in an excellent spot since he is coming off a start in which he collected the loss.
Since 2019, Verlander is 7-0 in eight starts off a loss. His success has persisted even against teams that match up excellently against him.
Who Starts for the Yankees?
The Yankees start Luis Severino today.
Severino has succeeded when he got to face lowly teams like the Orioles and Tigers -- he faced both of these teams twice.
Severino vs. Astro Batters
But Houston is obviously a different animal.
Also, the Astros match up well against him.
Primarily, Severino throws a fastball, changeup, and slider.
These pitches make up 89.9 percent of his arsenal.
Houston ranks second in slugging against these pitches from righties.
Look out for each of the three batters that has faced Severino at least 10 times.
Those three guys are Jose Altuve, Yuli Gurriel, and Michael Brantley.
Altuve is batting .308 against Severino while Gurriel slugs .500 against him and Brantley slugs .636 against him.
Colorado Rockies vs. Minnesota Twins
Friday, June 24, 2022 at 8:10 p.m. ET at Target Field in Minnesota
Who Starts for Colorado?
Colorado starts German Marquez tonight.
Marquez has done a lot of work over the years to alter his pitching repertoire by injecting more variety in it.
While he throws his fastball less often than he used to, he is struggling to be effective with the other pitches that he throws more often.
For example, opponents are slugging .563 against his slider, which is his second-most frequent pitch.
They are, moreover, slugging .500 against the sinker, which is his third-favorite pitch in terms of frequency.
Marquez vs. Twin Batters
Marquez looks particularly unreliable today because he matches up terribly with Twin batters.
They rank seventh in slugging against his favorite pitches, which also include his extremely vulnerable fastball and his curveball, from righties.
Who Starts for Minnesota?
The Twins start Dylan Bundy who has been consistently excellent against weaker tests except for Baltimore, which was uniquely familiar with him already because he was a long-time Oriole.
With certainty, Colorado counts as a weak test. It ranks third-to-last in runs per game in away games.
The Rockies also match up terribly with Bundy.
Overall, they rank 24thin slugging .369 against his favorite pitches from righties.
Colorado ranks 29thin slugging .307 against these pitches from righties away from their extremely hitters-friendly ballpark.
