Just wondering what your guys opinions on this game are. I don't know much about the teams, but I do know this is a huge rivalry and that Marshall returns (according to collegefootballnews.com) 21 starters?!?! is that true? If so, wouldnt taking 3+ TD's in this heated rivalry, with the new clock rules be worth a shot?? The line is dropping everywhere, and from an outsiders point of view West Virginia could be one of the more overhyped teams of this year, maybe I am wrong. I jumped on +22.5 for a unit, seems like a tip your cap if they cover type game.

First, let's clarify: This is NOT a rivalry. At least as WVU is concerned.

It is a rivalry as far as Marshall is concerned. They are the red-headed step-child of WV football and have been trying to get respect/attention from WVU for years, without being able to schedule this game. Finally, WVU has agreed and it's on.

I believe WVU is overhyped but does have the ability and the goal to get to a BCS game if not a National Title game. That being said, Marshall is extremely motivated to make it difficult for, or prevent WVU, from burning their couches.

I think that this line gets to +24 with the public on WVU. Think it's a play on Marshall over 3 TDs, but waiting for the best line.

:money2:

I live not too far from Marshall or WVU..and we had a good convo going on this game a few weeks ago in bAR's future thread...I'll dig some of those up...I think anything over 21 is a good play on the Herd...

I live about 1 1/2 hrs from Huntington and 2 3/4 from Morgantown, so I have a bit of a pulse about the rivalry...this is a much bigger deal for Marshall than it is for WVU..esp now that they are "big time"...we saw something similar in college hoops a couple months ago...Marshall moved from the MAC to Conf USA and weren't good at all...WVU was off Elite 8 trip and had started 14-3 and won 12 in a row last year and were ranked top 15..they finally got Marshall half way through season...Marshall BEAT WVU on neutral floor in Charleston and every news channel led w/ it in the three majors in WV...Huntington, Charleston, and Morgantown..and this was the same day as a cop getting murdered in Huntington...it was a BIG deal...esp to Marshall...I'll throw in the bball recap because I remember how the WVU players reacted to the rivalry..not sure it matters in this football game, but it was obvious the game meant much less to WVU than it did Marshall..there's even a quote from Gansey saying as much..

Marshall ends Mountaineers' 12-game winning streak

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia's ownership of the nation's longest winning streak was short-lived.

Mark Patton had 16 points and 10 rebounds as Marshall posted a 58-52 victory over West Virginia (No. 13 ESPN/USA Today, No. 9 AP) on Wednesday night, ending the Mountaineers' winning streak at 12 games.

Center Kevin Pittsnogle had guaranteed a win for West Virginia (14-4), but the Mountaineers were held to a season low for points and fell to their cross-state rival for the second straight year, the first time that's happened since 1981-82.

"After a guarantee like that, it's a good thing we showed up tonight," Patton said. "This is how it is every year in Charleston. It is always back and forth like that."

Pittsnogle didn't apologize for his prediction.

"I'm still glad I said it," he said. "There's nothing wrong with what I said. I think it was just more like confidence."

Marshall (8-9) usually finds more motivation for this game because the Thundering Herd are considered second fiddle in a state with only two Division I teams. The meeting also occurs in the middle of West Virginia's rough Big East schedule.

"They came out with more intensity," West Virginia's Mike Gansey said. "This is kind of like their Super Bowl. It's just another game for us."

It was the Thundering Herd's first win over an Associated Press Top 10 opponent since beating St. John's in 1971.

It marked the fourth straight meeting between the schools to be decided by six points or less. West Virginia has failed to score more than 55 points in the last three meetings.

Marshall coach Ron Jirsa said his team "didn't do anything special. They just played smart and kept themselves focused."

Pittsnogle led West Virginia with 20 points but got little support. Gansey was held to 10 points -- 10 below his average.

West Virginia, outrebounded badly and unable to find its bread-and-butter 3-point shot, never led in the second half and went seven minutes without a field goal late in the game.

Marshall's Markel Humphrey hit a 3-pointer and Patton outwrestled three West Virginia players for a rebound and hit the putback for the Thundering Herd's largest lead, 47-40, with 4:26 left.

West Virginia scored the next seven points and tied the score on Patrick Beilein's layup with 2:08 remaining.

But Patton put Marshall ahead to stay with a short jumper with 1:32 left. Tre Whitted, who went 0-for-8 from the field in Marshall's last game and then hit a 3-pointer for a 52-47 lead.

Pittsnogle answered with a 3-pointer with 34 seconds left, but Marshall sealed the win by making six straight free throws in the final 25 seconds.

Joe Miles added 13 points for Marshall and Whitted finished with 11.

West Virginia ranks second nationally with 10 3-pointers per game but shot poorly from the outside for the fourth straight year against Marshall at the Charleston Civic Center. West Virginia was 5-of-30 on 3-pointers and shot 35 percent overall.

it's obvious that a motivated WVU team can hang some points on a middle of the pack Conf USA team for sure...I will say that Marshall's D under Mark Snyder in his second year will be much improved..he was tOSU's D coordinator two years ago and is very much a scheme guy..these kids second year in the system will make a difference for sure...esp when it comes to league games..same stuff...edge control..zone drops..lots of shifts..gap control...same stuff tOSU pushes...

Remember also that Snyder left tOSU after just one year as D Coordinator (his second dream job) after D'Antonio left for UC to accept the Marshall job...why?? Because it's his alma mater, and first dream job..

I gotta think being that he's from Marshall, he knows what this game means to the second fiddle bunch...

Gotta think this line gets to at least 21 and the hook, don't u guys think??

it's a real catch 22 IMO if u lean Marshall...on one hand u'd prefer this game to be a couple weeks in when it could actually be a "look ahead spot"..a sandwich between conf road games or something..lol...but on the other hand a week one contest has the possibility of just not being sharp, which always favors the big underdog..

jump,

line is down to 21.5 even at the public casinos here in vegas. Is it true marshall returns 21 starts?

Good stuff, Jump. I agree, Marshall getting more than 3 TDs is the play here.

They lost I think 1 starter on offense and 3 on defense...if my memory serves me correct...I would have to verify though.

a kid i know at the sportsbook knows a west virginia coach and said they were gonna murder marshall (no clue if it's true)

I would certainly assume that they would believe that...why wouldn't they...hell they were up by four TD's vs UGA in the Sugar Bowl...

i just look at it like even if thats true talk is cheap and bullshit runs the marathon, give me 3+ TD's on a team who i know is experienced and will be fired up.

marshall might be the red headed stepchild to west virginia but their football teamhad more success up until last year.

Lesser division and pre-Rodriguez (although if you go back 10 years, the Couch Burners are very strong).

I agree with JOB, would like this game a whole lot better in week 2 or 3 with a look ahead factor. Everyone is motivated for the 1st game of the year--just some more than others.

We'll see how high this line gets.

the question now is do ya take em now or wait (I went ahead and bit 1 unit since a book still had 22.5 up) if it goes to 23 or 24 i might put more

Im think it closes about 22-23..IMO

Great points both ways

I like to look at WVU..to capsule season their last 5-6 games..they merit this spread

Many say its one game...UGA...I saw enough outta them to know they can run over teams this year...Pat will throw better and Slay will only be better...the Marshall factor makes this unplayable for me at this time(as far as being pumped up)

fuck marshall being pumped....just keep it driving down for me..eastern was pumped for UM too.

tough to roll an experienced club that youd hope would know what they are doing and be more prepared for an early season road trip than a green team. To me this line just gives marshall no respect, and I have them as atleast in the upper half of division 1 teams. Louisville so far is about the only team I wouldnt want to take crazy points on this year.

I know talent is talent but West Virginia's two best players are sophomores.

Is it true bet on sports opened this line at 17.5? that sounds a little more reasonable.

if you guys know where the other threads are on Marshallv WV can you please bump them I cant find em. Thanks

i guess the mac has represented itself a bit better in the past few years but that WVU club is a pretty impressive  bunch.

Line is down to 21 now, somebody is hitting this one hard. Anyone out there truly think West Virginia is the Best Team in the land?

Not the best team in the land but they are still pretty tough

I think WVU is slightly overrated... but being home in this one and the hype behind this year's team... they may lay it on.

I think there's stronger plays... but if your a dog lover this one has some serious bite.
