Miami Marlins vs. St. Louis Cardinals
Monday, June 27, 2022 at 7:45 p.m. ET at Busch Stadium in St. Louis

Who Starts for Miami?

Miami starts the regularly dominant Pablo Lopez.

Primarily, Lopez throws a fastball and changeup.

These two pitches combine to make up 74.9 percent of his arsenal.

The Marlin righty also mixes in a cutter, sinker, and rarely a curveball as well.

How Does Lopez Match Up With Cardinal Batters?

Lopez's worst games have come against teams that match up well against him in that they rank highly in slugging rate against his two favorite pitches from righties.

While teams like the Mets and Giants performed well against Lopez and rank top-eight in slugging against these two pitches from righties, the Cardinals rank 16thin the category.

While 16th isn't particularly low, Lopez is such a good pitcher that it takes a lineup that matches up excellently with him to have a competitive chance against him.

St. Louis' Righty-Heavy Lineup

The Cardinals are at a disadvantage today because their lineup is righty-heavy.

Lopez is at his best against righties: they are hitting .203 and slugging .304 against him while lefties are hitting .223 and slugging .427 against him.

Plus, lefties are responsible for seven of the eight home runs that Lopez has allowed this year.

It is true, of course, that St. Louis will position some batters from the left side of the plate today.

Their top two switch-hitters are Tommy Edman and Dylan Carlson.

Neither batter concerns me much because both are significantly stronger against left-handed pitching.

St. Louis' top left-handed batter is Nolan Gorman.

Gorman, however, does not enjoy strong form at the moment. He is coming off two 0-for-4 outings.

Fellow lefty Corey Dickerson, who was anyhow struggling, is injured.

There is only one active Cardinal batter who has multiple hits in his career facing Lopez.

That batter is Nolan Arenado who won't win the game for St. Louis by himself.

Who Starts for St. Louis?

The Cardinals start Adam Wainwright.

Wainwright primarily throws a fastball, sinker, and cutter.

These are the three pitches that he throws with over 10 percent frequency.

He throws each one between 24 and 29 percent of the time.

Wainwright vs. Marlin Batters

I expect Wainwright to struggle tonight because Miami ranks fifth in slugging against his three favorite pitches from righties.

Several Marlin batters are hitting above .300 in at least three career at-bats with Wainwright on the mound.

Among others, look out for Avisail Garcia and Miguel Rojas.

Garcia is 5-for-15 lifetime against Wainwright while Rojas is 3-for-8 in his career versus Wainwright.

Chicago White Sox vs. Los Angeles Angels
Monday, June 27, 2022 at 9:38 p.m. ET at Angel Stadium in Anaheim California

Who Starts for Chicago?

Chicago starts the absolutely fade-worthy Lucas Giolito tonight.

In his last three starts, Giolito yielded a 7.20 ERA against Texas, a 14.40 ERA against Houston, and a 12.60 ERA against Toronto.

His worst games were his last two in which he allowed a combined total of 15 earned runs in 10 innings.

Part of his problem may be physical. For example, his average fastball velocity was at its lowest in his last start.

Giolito's fastball has been his biggest problem.

Houston, Giolito's second-to-last opponent, slugged .909 against it.

Most recently, Toronto slugged .818 against this pitch.

His fastball problems are severely important because it is by far his favorite pitch: he throws it 47.8 percent of the time.

Giolito vs. Angel Batters

Primarily, Giolito throws a fastball, slider, and changeup.

Together, these pitches make up nearly 96 percent of his arsenal.

Angel batters match up well against him in that they rank ninth in slugging against his favorite pitches from righties.

Who Starts for Los Angeles?

The Angels start Noah Syndergaard who does not share Giolito's problems in terms of form.

Primarily, Syndergaard throws a sinker, changeup, fastball, and slider.

He matches up well with the White Sox in that they rank 28thin slugging against his favorite pitches from righties.

With you on fish but think it might be a stretch to expect waino to struggle much. I don’t recall him ever having a bad start vs fish, he might have but he mostly been really good vs them and was earlier in the year in Miami. With the heat/humidity gone for now I expect this be a pitching duel.

Where was giolito fastball velo at last start? His k’s been way down this month also, that a pretty good sign there might be something wrong w him cause even when he not at his best he still usually fans a bunch of ppl. Normally I’d be liking his over 6.5 k’s vs halo’s who have a lot of swing and miss in the lineup but that number feels pretty high if he isn’t right.
