I didn't see every play but saw a lot. Manning was simply inaccurate on a lot of his throws. Was talking to a friend about this. Can a College/Pro QB work on improving their accuracy? Or is it just something you kind of need to be born with. Like a baseball pitcher and control or maybe a shooter in hoops. I lean you can't really improve at that stage - it's more you just kind of have it by then or you don't. And if you don't have it by College you never will. Which would tell me Manning is in trouble for big games in College and the pros. My friend disagreed and mentioned Josh Allen as an example. I thought Allen was more of using his head vs. accuracy but I didn't see him a lot early on. I see Drew Allar at PSU in same light - guy never comes thru in clutch with a lot on accuracy. I can't believe he's being talked about as #1 pick next year. Oh, he and Manning will have Huge numbers just due to talent around them and such - I'm talking big games and pros. Curious as to others thoughts.

I think he is a 21 year old making his first start on the road against a very good defense. Playing against a good defense with a new DC, with NFL coaching experience, that can make things extremely confusing. Caleb Downs allows the D to disguise things. The defense made him indecisive which messed with his accuracy. I think Arch is going to be just fine and this sort of experience will make him and his accuracy better moving forward.

He was definitely overrated...I mean literally all because of his name. But he can still be great or even better than great...who knows. He seems too talented to wind up a dud like LeBron's son. Arch is definitely a young kid with a huge amount of pressure on him (also because of his last name) that he'll have to get used to.

I'm confident that Peyton would have done the same or worse if his first start was in Columbus against that defense given the same cast around him. Hell Peyton was an INT machine his first year in the NFL, never beat the Gators in college, etc. Why is the sky suddenly falling after one game? The attention to this is preposterous.

It was noted more than once, on this board, that the hype was unrealistic on the low end. On the high end, comical, if not pathetic. His name is Manning, not God. Not his fault that the media tried to make him the latter.
First road start in an extremely hostile environment. First start at the collegiate level against elite competition. He was clearly nervous. Settled in during the 4Q with some great throws, the TD and then the one to TE Andries were that. The miss to Wingo on the final drive was bad, no doubt. But Manning owned everything post-game, and he knows that there are things to work on, and they will be.
He'll be fine, more than fine.

But, can he POOF! - become a better PURE passer, considering the training he's had? - probably, to a degree
eg. Ewers wasn't a great QB - but he was a great pure passer. He could find the open guy, deliver the ball to the right spot, hit the receiver in stride...... Manning can't do that yet - against elite D's anyway.
I'm sure he's an accurate thrower of the football - standing in place, throwing to a target, he's probably unbelievable.

Peyton was 19 when he started at QB. Arch is already 21 in his 3rd year of college. It was a tough road game ut he's 21 in his 3rd year and has thrown 100 passes in college. If he wasn't ready, thats on him.
I was most concerned with his accuracy and arm strength. Im not sure why he threw so many sidearm passes. I was concerned about him when Malik Murphy looked better than him.

Love to see the trends on the Cards laying close to a TD in this league on the road. Not sure I ever remember it. Somehow we went from last in the NFL on defense a couple years ago to completely loaded outside of maybe CB and that's without our 1st round pick not even being able to practice til after week 4. Nice to have that kind of identity for the first time in all my years here. Have fun with the kids man.

Correct in both cases. Sarkisian is loyal to a fault. Manning wasn't starting last season unless it was necessary (injuries).
Arch (with the family onboard) wanted to go somewhere to experience the college life - socially, vibrant city especially, etc.. He was totally fine and somewhat preferred sitting for 2 years. And it's why if it's 50/50 he'd stay on for his senior year. But if he doesn't show more improvement that choice will be made for him.
Definitely concerns on Saturday. Let's see where things are mid October. No real competition over the next 3 games, then it's Florida on the road and OU in Dallas.
There was tons of dumb hype before the Ohio game and now there's been ridiculous overreaction after it. It's just the world and society we live in today, whether it comes to athletics or anything else.

I stand my ground that in a day and age where any kid can go somewhere immediately to play....if he's got this much talent....is NOT sitting until his junior year.
School like Ole Miss would've creamed themselves to have him...in that offense....with that skill set. And that family heritage.
He chose (or the family chose) to let him sit behind a good, not great QB until his junior year.
He won't be chopped liver, but that was a putrid performance against a solid team, but who he also had 9 months to prepare for. I'm sorry, but I'm not giving this kid any benefit of the doubt.

That's the whole point - Manning isn't any kid in a normal situation. It's been written about and discussed ad nauseum, especially in Austin. Whether or not it was (is) the right decision won't be decided until his career plays out. But the path Manning chose (with family's blessing or not) is as far from any normal scenario you could find.
Criticism of last Saturday is obviously warranted, from several angles. We'll see how it plays out.

Texas will be fine as the season plays out with a pretty easy schedule. Dropping to just 7 after that loss and performance is kind of shocking and sets them up nicely.
The three stand out negatives of the game were as follows:
1. Play calling/red zone offense - This is either due to the subject of this thread (Manning's ability) or supreme confidence that Ohio State could do nothing (which they could not).
2. WR Separation - There was very little in the game. While I would love to give a ton of credit to Ohio State for this ... it looked concerning. Probably the hardest to fix.
3. Manning Poise - I think he rushed himself a lot, even when he had good time. His clock was fast which led to bad decisions, bad mechanics, and bad throws. Easily fixed.
I want to point out that while the offense was not great, the Texas defense was insanely good. They held Ohio State to 203 yards, 40 yards of which came on a 1 in 30 type of catch.
The offensive line for Texas also looked ok.
Really just Manning and moreso the WR crew that looked like they need help .. again, play calling didn't help.
