What are your thoughts on the Cubs sending down Kris Bryant?

The Chicago Cubs have reassigned top prospect Kris Bryant, who leads the majors with nine spring training home runs, to their minor league camp.

The Cubs made the move Monday, less than a week before they open their season against the St. Louis Cardinals.

"We entered camp with the presumptive move being to send him to Triple-A," Cubs president Theo Epstein said. "It's always the presumptive [move] for us move with young players that haven't played in the big leagues yet."

Chicago also demoted highly regarded prospects Javier Baez, who had been competing for the starting second base job, and Addison Russell to the minors.

Bryant, 23, led the minor leagues with 43 homers last season and was having an outstanding spring with the Cubs, batting .425 (17-for-40) with 15 RBIs in 14 games.

"He demonstrated to everybody that he's really close, not just to the big leagues, but to playing an important role on the team," Epstein said.

But if Bryant spends 12 days in the minors to start the 2015 season, the Cubs will gain an extra year until he is eligible for free agency.

"We're more likely to get him [on the major-league roster] sooner than later," Epstein said. "We are going to afford him the same luxury we afford to most young players which is go off and get into the rhythm of the season, and we'll get to you quickly."

Cubs manager Joe Maddon said he is looking forward to working with Bryant, who he called a "brilliant talent."

"When you look at the entire picture of development you're still looking at a couple areas to improve a little bit," Maddon said Monday. "I'm not going to sit here and tell you that you wouldn't like to have him in your lineup. He's also 23. I'm looking forward to working with this guy for the next 15 years.

"He's a brilliant talent. I'm not going to sit here and say things that are disingenuous. This guy is good. He's going to be really good."

The matter of whether Bryant would open the season on the major league roster stirred debate at the behest of Bryant's agent, Scott Boras, who was adamant that the Cubs owed it to fans to have Bryant start the season in the big leagues.

Epstein, however, told ESPN last week that he prefers young players to make their debut in-season, as he's done in the past with Dustin Pedroia and Jacoby Ellsbury during his tenure with the Boston Red Sox.

Boras questioned the Cubs' "integrity" earlier this month when discussing the possibility of Bryant starting the year in the minors. His comments prompted baseball commissioner Rob Manfred to chide Boras on Friday.

"I don't think the Cubs' decision with respect to what's going to happen with Kris Bryant is really any of Mr. Boras' business," Manfred said.

The 22-year-old Baez struggled mightily this spring, batting just .173 with one homer, one RBI and 20 strikeouts in 52 at-bats. The slugging infielder had a whopping 95 strikeouts in 213 at-bats with the Cubs last season.

Russell, acquired last season in the trade that sent Jeff Samardzija to the Athletics, batted .324 with a homer and six RBIs this spring.

Bryant and the 21-year-old Russell were rated as baseball's top- and fourth-ranked prospects overall, respectively, earlier this year by ESPN Insider Keith Law.

The Cubs would be idiots to not do this. Everyone can wait a few weeks.

As the rules on eligibility/player control is written I have no problem with the choice the Cubs made. It's a MLB rule that needs to be adjusted in some way in my opinion, just not sure how they could go about it. Maybe make it so that a year is credited to everyone prior to All Star break and/or if they reach playing time/statistical benchmarks.

My big problem is if Scott Boras/Kris Bryant hold this against them when it becomes time to reach that first extension.

Boras negotiations are always going to be contentious anyway, and the Cubs organization will have plenty of time to establish some good will with Bryant, the player and person. Everyone knows the rules. Club's not going to sacrifice that extra year.

Tribe's going thru the same thing on a smaller stage with Lindor, they're hiding behind the steady play and good defense of Jose Ramirez when it's clear that Lindor is ready for his shot. Ramirez HAS been steady though, and is a good fit in the 2-hole, so hard to say when Lindor will be promoted. Don't want to promote him to sit.

Ramirez is the best hitter on the team?

Ramirez is the best hitter on the team?

No, but he's a competent player, and was a big part of stabilizing the infield defense after they jettisoned fat Asdrubal last year. I'd like to see Lindor in there as soon as I can, higher ceiling, but I understand the Tribe's position.

Ramirez has also had a nice spring, for whatever that's worth.

Agree with your first paragraph, Fondy, but the union agreed to this arrangement and we all know the baseball union has done as well as any for any professional sports league's players. This just happens to be a small slice where the owners have a bit of an edge.

Scott Boras' clients almost always go FA; besides, if Bryant/Boras hold a grudge 6-7 years down the road over 3 extra weeks in the minors, there is something seriously wrong in addition to anything we are discussing here.

Absolutely the right move.

Cubs under 83 season win total seems real solid to me, regardless of this topic.

Best of luck to everyone betting baseball this year.

Yep the union generally does pretty well. Just wish there wasn't a need for teams to play games.

I think I'd hold a grudge as a player. Assuming a year of service time loss now is the difference from playing for $300-400k in one of his season to potentially 8+ million even if he doesn't reach his full potential (Juan Uribe is 7.5 million this year). Could cost him $15+ million if he's a top 3-5 3rd basemen in the league. I'd make the Cubs makeup for that amount down the line compared to a different team. No discount (but as you said that wouldn't likely happen with Boras anyways).

ya thats the thing I don't get

Boras will remind Bryant of this when he takes him to FA, this club had no loyalty to you they were thinking of their bottom line 6-7 years from now, you should do the same

its not like they dont have money to spend either

with fringe rookies I completely understand, when you have a guy who is arguably already their 2nd best hitter after Rizzo it just seems dumb

Doesn't seem dumb to me. A year of leverage is a year of leverage. And hometown discounts are never much of a discount, when they happen at all. Finally, hitting a bunch of homers in March (and April), has been done before, it means little. The Cubs would be complete fools not to wait. Cubs fans should be happy about it.

Less pressure on him coming up in late June when the Cubs are in last place...

:peacesigns:

He'll be up before that.

Another thing, it's a two-way street. Maybe the Cubs would consider breaking camp with Bryant for the hell and excitement of it if they didn't already know his agent was such a tool.

Such a tool

getting the best for his clients from 30 billionaires

It's not a case of one team having an axe to grind. Teams routinely pass on his players in drafts, just due to the representation. His own colleagues in his own industry think he's a tool. When everyone in the world thinks you're a tool other than the people you represent ... you're probably a tool. It's not exactly a noble profession to begin with.

Boras is Boras; call him what you will but he does well for his clients. Point is, Boras will take this client FA when he is eligible regardless of what the Cubs do now with him. Track record more than documented. Cubs making the smart move gaining the extra year...a virtual no-brainer.
