This is not posted anywhere yet, where did you hear it?

Only hours ago on the NFL Network they said that the team feels he won't be there, but that Winslow and his doctors are saying he'll be ready for camp.

Here's the only thing that seems to be swimming around online right now, it's basically the same thing the NFLN reported earlier tonight:

Some have questioned whether the 2007 season of Cleveland's Kellen Winslow Jr. has ended before it even began after the Browns tight end underwent microfracture knee surgery this offseason.

Winslow spent about six weeks on crutches and got off them only about two weeks ago.

But neither Winslow's doctors, trainers or the tight end himself believes that his 2007 season will be curtailed. They all are expecting him to be ready for training. Of course, he is attempting to return from serious knee surgery, but the feeling of those who know Winslow, who have spoken to him this offseason, is that the tight end will return this season. And could and should be ready for training camp. The hope is they're right.

Yeah, I'm not there yet. That thread doesn't tell me anything I don't already know. I think right now it's all speculation. Now, the team may be leaking this to soften the ground for the eventual announcement. But that's not out yet so I'm not going to freak out.

However, if he does go down, I would change their draft board.

I'd still think about Thomas first, but I'd then go Calvin Johnson second.

I realize this would overload them a bit at receiver, but without Winslow you might as well be deep on the outside and have Cribbs convert to more of an H-Back type guy who does the Randel El thing.

It might leave Joe J. out in the cold a bit unless they want to spread it wide and run four WRs, and, yeah, what does that mean for Taylor, but they'd have to do something.

Unreal. The freaking bad luck never ends with this team! Haven't heard this on local radio yet.

You can also thank ProFootballTalk.com for "breaking" this yesterday. Those "journalists" love to throw anything they can on their rumormill, and it's only worsened by the fact that other sites cite them as a source.

In fact, this was reported in Cleveland over a month ago that it was possible due to past players who have attempted to come back from microfracture surgery. However, PFT must have just found this the other day and decided to turn a "might" into a "will".

For more terrific reporting from PFT, just look at yesterday's entry where they report that Eli Manning signed an extension, then 2 hours later, report that no extension was signed.

I really hope this isn't true. Management tries to build a team but it is hard when top free agents and top draft picks are getting hurt and have to sit out whole seasons. When i originally saw this i was real pissed. But if it's just a rumor i feel a lot better now.

I guess it's just the media that needs attention.

At this point it's definitely a rumor. When he had the last surgery, as rolub said, there were some that worried because there have been cases where this surgery didn't work out well at all. That it was one of those surgeries that, if it didn't take right, or if it wasn't done well, could really end a career.

But everybody involved said it went well. So unless he's hit a wall or suffered some sort of setback, I tend to believe the doctors and Winslow who say he's going to be ready for camp.

However, there is that part of me that knows this is the way you cushion the blow if something like Winslow being done for the season is coming. And you'd want to do it this way, too, because of what happened with LeCharles already.

We'll see, I just get the sense this is a little like one of those Lis Franc things, where it's not a major injury, but if it's handled wrong, or if something goes wrong it turns into a huge, huge problem. I think that's why people are worried. But the guy's got time, and there's still a month before the draft. So even if, worst case scenario, he was really hurt, the team has some time to draw up plans to attack their offseason and draft accordingly and they shouldn't get caught flat-footed on this.

Heck, for all we know the Browns themselves could have floated this out there, giving the impression that they'll draft Calvin Johnson if available, making Tampa and Washington targets to trade up to #3. With the major free agent signings over with, I wish I could turn off all NFL news updates until the draft, as most of what you hear now are unsubstantiated rumors anyhow.

I was thinking about this moring, Ro. Whether it's true or not, if I were the Browns I'd play up some uncertainty and float the idea that this "could alter our priorities for the draft a bit."

Then basically say to the world, off-the record, but so you know it gets out there that there's no way Calvin Johnson goes lower than the third pick in the draft.

In theory this could lead to the Browns moving down a spot and still getting Thomas, or moving back even further and getting more players. Frankly, given Winslow's history of injury, you might want to look at drafting a TE in this draft anyway even if it's late.

Does anyone know when his contract is up? Funny thing is he is going to want a pay increase.

I would agree with you Joe. Although, if this is the case for Winslow, then it may be right up Savage's alley to go for a WR knowing that winslow won't be able to go this upcomming season. He probally dosen't want tampa trading up and stealing the browns pick. He is very good about sending a smoke screens to the draft.

I wouldn't be opposed to Calvin Johnson by any means but i feel there are more pressing needs then WR. Even if he is a standout. I really would like the browns to select Joe Thomas i just hope he is there. Savage knows the need for a good offensive line.
