LSU running back Jeremy Hill was arrested early Saturday in connection with a fight at an LSU-area bar that left a man unconscious, arrest records show.
Hill, a former Redemptorist High School star, was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on a count of simple battery about 6:30 a.m. Saturday, Parish Prison booking records show. He was released after posting a $500 bail.
LSU spokesman Michael Bonnette said Saturday he and LSU coach Les Miles were in New York for the NFL draft and were still gathering information about Hill’s arrest.
He said Miles would wait to comment until he returns to Baton Rouge and is able to speak with Hill about the incident.
Baton Rouge police responded at 2:13 a.m. to a reported fight at Reggie’s Bar, 1176 Bob Pettit Blvd., in Tigerland, according to an affidavit of probable cause for Hill’s arrest.
The victim told police he was hit in the head numerous times and lost consciousness, the affidavit says.
An officer was shown a video of the incident, “which clearly shows the defendant (Hill) striking the victim,” the affidavit says.
A second person then hit the victim with his fist, which rendered the victim unconscious, Baton Rouge Police Department spokesman Cpl. L’Jean McKneely said. The second person’s identity, as well as what caused the fight, are unknown at this time, McKneely said.
Hill left the scene before police arrived, McKneely said.
LSU police spokesman Capt. Cory Lalonde said Baton Rouge police contacted LSU police to help locate Hill and they subsequently found him near the West Campus Apartments, which are listed as Hill’s address. Lalonde could not give an exact location.
LSU police initially detained Hill until Baton Rouge Police Department officers arrived to arrest him, the affidavit says.
Hill, 20, then was booked into Parish Prison on the simple battery count.
This arrest wasn’t Hill’s first run-in with law enforcement.
Hill and another ex-Redemptorist student, Avery Tate, pleaded guilty Jan. 6, 2012, to engaging in a sexual act with a 14-year-old girl in a school locker room in December 2010.
Hill and Tate, 19 and 18 at the time of their guilty pleas, were given suspended six-month prison terms and put on active supervised probation for two years with the East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney’s Office.
Hill and Tate each pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of carnal knowledge of a juvenile.
Court records show that Hill and Tate’s probation conditions provide that they “refrain from all criminal conduct.”
East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore III said Saturday that based on what he knows about the incident, he is not sure if Hill violated the terms of his probation.
“If there is a new criminal violation that he is found guilty of or if there is some violation of the probation that was imposed, it could have an impact of his sentence,” Moore said.
Moore said that on Monday, State District Judge Bonnie Jackson will be notified of Hill’s arrest and will decide whether to call him in for a hearing.
Jackson could possibly change the conditions of Hill’s probation or wait until more facts become available, Moore said.
“It’s a standard condition that you not violate any criminal law while you’re on probation,” Moore said.
Moore added, “He could be innocent, and you can’t violate it if you’re innocent.”
Last season, Hill emerged as the leading ground-gainer in the LSU running back rotation, rushing for a team-leading 755 yards and 12 touchdowns on 145 carries.
A week ago, Hill, a 6-2, 225-pound sophomore, started the Tigers’ spring game, and gained 103 yards on 13 carries.
With senior Alfred Blue recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, Hill still held the mantle as LSU’s lead back ahead of Blue, Kenny Hilliard, and Terrence Magee.
After Hill pleaded guilty to carnal knowledge of a juvenile, it paved the way for him to enroll early with LSU and signing his letter of intent after previously attending classes at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
