The debut of Trevor Lawrence happens Saturday night when the the Jags and new coach Urban Meyer host the Browns at 7 p.m. EST on NFL Network. Lawrence is battling Gardner Minshew for the starting position and both should see ample playing time on Saturday night.
It’ll be interesting to see how Meyer handles NFL preseason games from a competitive point of view given he only lost 35 college football games out of 215 games. The Jaguars have lost 36 games in the last three seasons. Browns coach Kevin Stefanski is the reigning NFL Coach of the Year.
Baker Mayfield is ready to elevate his game to the next level this season after leading Cleveland to a playoff win last year before losing to the Chiefs in the divisional round. On defense, the Browns added high draft picks in CB Greg Newsome II and LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah. Stefanski said on Wednesday that Mayfield will not play in this game, which gives the Jaguars even more of an edge.
Meyer confirmed on Thursday that Lawrence and Minshew are indeed in a battle for the starting quarterback position. This seems like a bit of coach speak to drive up the trade value of Minshew, but it’s Urban Meyer. He also signed Tim Tebow to a contract.
This game will also give us the first look at how the Jaguars will use Travis Etienne. Will he play primarily at running back or will he also line up at wide receiver a lot?
It's a new era here in Jax and Urban needs to come out slinging, so I'm thinking JAX laying less than a FG should be solid spot.
