Bernard Berrian revealed that the injury that sidelined him for Sunday's exhibition is similar to a turf toe problem that hindered him in 2007.

Berrian considers himself "day to day," but it's concerning that the injury has lingered so long. It cost him quite a bit of practice time last season. Berrian isn't a recommended fantasy pick to begin with going to a bad passing offense that is run heavy. Here's another reason not to draft him. Aug. 18 - 8:12 pm et

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported on Monday Night Countdown that Ronnie Brown could be on a team other than the Dolphins by Week 1.

This sounds like long-shot speculation, assuming Miami isn't blown away by a trade offer. Brown has struggled in the preseason, but is only 26 and under control through 2010. The alternative, Ricky Williams, is 31, has hardly played since 2005, and is signed for only this season. While Ricky supplanting Ronnie as a starter is very possible, Brown being cut or shipped off for a late-round pick would be stunning. The offensive backfield is one of Miami's few strengths as a team. Aug. 18 - 8:01 pm et

Terry Cousin and Mike Adams haven't been getting it done at nickel back, so Daniels will be given a look there. The former Nick Saban draft pick can tackle and has versatility, having played both free safety and corner. Aug. 20 - 2:30 pm et

Merriman update, torn PCL, options are rehabbing w/o surgery, surgery and delaying his season, or season ending reconstructive surgery.

Shawne Merriman revealed Saturday that his career could be over. In addition to a torn PCL, Merriman has a torn LCL in his left knee.

His knee requires extensive reconstructive surgery. Perhaps Merriman will chance it and play this year, but that would be foolish. His contract is up after the 2009 season and if he has the procedure, Merriman could try continuing his career afterwards. He'd risk more damage by playing on the knee in 2008. He needs to be removed from IDP draft boards. Aug. 23 - 6:13 pm et

A number of key players got a little dinged up, some more worrisome than others

Jason Taylor left Saturday's game against the Panthers with a right knee sprain.

Taylor was able to limp off the field after writhing in pain, and he was later carted to the locker room. According to NFL Network's Adam Schefter, Taylor does not have any ligament damage. He was examined by Dr. James Andrews, who just happened to be at the game. Taylor will undergo an MRI Sunday. Aug. 23 - 8:55 pm et

Marques Colston left Saturday's game in the first quarter with what the Saints are calling "bruised ribs."

Colston is a magnet for big hits, and left for the locker room after taking a shot in the first quarter. There is no indication the injury is serious at this point, and Colston watched the second half on the sideline. Reggie Bush also left with what is being called a "Charley Horse." Maurice Jones-Drew left Saturday's game with an ankle sprain in the first quarter and didn't return.

Jaguars.com wrote an hour after he left that "it's believed to be mild" although that's usually what's said during a game. We wouldn't let the news affect your drafting of Mo-Jo, but keep an eye on him. Aug. 23 - 11:33 pm et

Giants DE Osi Umenyiora injured his left knee and was carted off the field early in Saturday's preseason game against the Jets.

He could not put any weight on the leg and was helped off the field with his arms wrapped around two trainers. Although the initial diagnosis is that it's not an ACL injury, NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports that Umenyiora will undergo an MRI Sunday. Tom Coughlin said there wasn't ligament damage, but we'll have to see. Aug. 23 - 8:28 pm et

Injured Chris Brown "seems unlikely" to make the Texans' 53-man roster, according to the Houston Chronicle's Richard Justice.

For background, Justice is a reputable columnist, but not a beat writer. Still, this shows that even those in Houston don't have an idea as to how the Texans' backfield will play out. Rookie Steve Slaton is the only back with a sure prominent role. Chris Taylor should be in the mix for carries. It could be that either Brown or Ahman Green get whacked. We'll find out by Saturday. Aug. 25 - 12:21 am et

I read reports of Green getting the boot earlier this week so I guess we definitely will see one of them get cut.

Julius Jones is healthy, but is seeing his practice snaps reduced.

Maurice Morris continues to work as the starter, an indication that he will start Seattle's third exhibition and in Week 1. Impressive rookie Justin Forsett is now challening for snaps and the Seahawks could give him a longer look with the first team Sunday to see what they have. T.J. Duckett remains buried and on the roster bubble. Aug. 24 - 4:41 pm et

Rookie Harry Douglas has captured the Falcons' third receiver job.

He'll be the No. 2 flanker behind Roddy White, so if White goes down Douglas could forge some re-draft value. For now, Douglas will operate in the slot, although ideally Atlanta won't go three wide too often. Douglas has seven catches for 53 yards and a touchdown in three preseason games. </td><td class="s_playerNewsText">NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports that Chad Johnson has a torn labrum in his shoulder, but plans to play through it.

Johnson did 21 pushups in front of the media Monday. He's in a harness and would need season-ending surgery if the shoulder popped out again, but considers that "unlikely." The signs are pointing to Chad facing Baltimore, but he may have a hard time making it 16 games. Patriots CB Ellis Hobbs played through a torn labrum in 2007, for what it's worth. Pain tolerance could be a big factor for Johnson and he may consistently miss practice time all year. Aug. 25 - 4:30 pm et

The specialist that Shawne Merriman visited Tuesday advised him to have surgery immediately to repair his torn PCL and LCL.

That's a clean sweep of Merriman's doctors recommending immediate surgery. The doctors agree that Merriman can play on the knee as is, but that he will basically be a shell of his former self in doing so. The Chargers appear ready to go forward with Jyles Tucker as Merriman's 2008 replacement. Aug. 27 - 10:38 am et

Derrick Harvey ended his hold out

Titans slating White & Johnson for 50/50 split

Shawne Merriman (torn LCL, PCL) told FOXSports.com that he will go against the advice of four knee specialists and play football in 2008.

Merriman says he's made his decision "100 percent" even though in each case the doctors recommended reconstructive surgery. The commitment is admirable, but Lights Out could've saved himself some air fare in hindsight. Further damage to the knee could end his career. Merriman is unlikely to see a full complement of snaps in 2008 and is a poor bet to play 16 games. Aug. 27 - 2:30 pm et
