As the ONE who said the Colts rushing defense wasnt nearly as bad as the hype led you to believe I say look at the Raven game again. The Ravens didnt run much but they had some success doing it. Which tells me there Run defense in this Bears game wont be as good as it was vs KC and NE. Not to mention Jones and Benson a re much better then Lewis and Anderson. Dont think Indy will stop Chi ground attack. Thomas Jones played that Championship Game with a HUGE CHIP on his shoulder. Cedric Benson ran harder on every possession then 99% of the backs I watched this year.
I have been discussing this same point ad nauseum with one of my friends. Here's the deal: while the Colts have held 2 of their opponents under 100 yards rushing, they were only able to do so because the opponent gave up on the run.
For example, KC, a team who has a rushing stud in LJ, only had 17 attempts for 44. Baltimore, who also has at the very least a good RB in Lewis, had 20 attempts for 84 yards. Finally, while NE had 30 attempts for 125 yards, Belichick thought it best to go to the air for 47 attempts. (Mini rant: if Belichick would have stuck to the run a bit more, I think we would be discussing a Bears/Pats matchup, but I digress). The point is: for whatever reason, teams were panicking and gave up on the run. The Colts burned those teams that did so.
So, here is the key to a potential Bears win: stick to the run. I remember hearing a radio announcer saying that if you do so, those 1-2 yard gains in the first quarter turn into 5, 8, and even 15 yard runs in the 4th quarter. The Bears have a huge advantage where even if they do not get into the opposition's territory, they can punt and then get the ball back quickly and continue running the ball. I had a crystal clear realization during the Bears/Saints game that I am sure a lot of you have already had: Grossman just needs to complete a few short/mid range passes and the Bears are in good shape. The Bears are an excellent rushing team, they had 46 rushing attempts against the Saints for 196 yards. I am not saying I expect the Bears to do the same against the Colts, but 46 rushing attempts equals in my eyes more time of possession and Manning on the sideline twiddling his thumbs. If Lovie stays committed to the run, I really like the Bears to cover and potentially fly home from Miami with a big win.
