Goodbye to Romance College Football
CUSA

Western Kentucky scored first, then Arkansas tied on a 76y Boyd run. 7-7. WKU would lead 35-7 HT. Boyd had a 86y TD run and WKU added a pick-six to lead 45-13 in the 45-19 Final. WKU had a 478-340 (6.1-6.3) TY edge. WKU’s previous high for points scored was 30 and their 478 yards were the most they posted vs any IA opponent.

Old Dominion led 23-10 with some big offensive scoring plays yet lost 24-23 to UTSA. ODU did put up a season high 371 yards of O but were outgained 419-371 (6.2-6.0). ODU did have to settle for a 29y FG after they appeared to have a TD in the 1st Q. UTSA was about to cross the goal line for a TD in the 2nd Q, but were hit and fumbled into the EZ for a touchback. UTSA owned the 4th Q with some walk-ons on the ODU D due to injuries. UTSA’s game winning drive took nearly 7 minutes. ODU had time to get a potential game winning FG, but QB Wolff held the ball too long was sacked/fumbled on 2nd down at the O41 with 1:28. UTSA was 8-of-15 3rd down, ODU just 5-of-12. UTSA was credited with 10 TFL and 5 QBH.

UTEP led 14-0 and 21-7 HT. UTEP had a 262-186 1st H yard edge. UTEP’s O struggled in the 3rd Q and Charlotte would score on their first 3 possessions of the 2nd H to tie 21-21 late 3rd Q (FG, TD 2pt good, FG). UTEP was SOD 4th-and-1 at the C04 and Charlotte scored on the 4th straight drive to lead 28-21 mid 4th. After two punts UTEP put a drive together in the final minutes but were INT’d at the C20 on 1st down. Charlotte outgained them 483-389 (6.9-6.8). Both teams were strong on 3rd down combining for 15-of-26. Reynolds 24-35-354-2-1, leading rusher 81y. LeMay DNP again. Locksley 15-20-215-1-1, leading rusher 84y.

Southern Miss outgained UAB 325-173 (5.8-3.0) with only a 13-10 FD advantage in the 37-2 win. Teams were a combined 4-of-24 3rd down. Each team had 4 sacks (and SM 11 TFL, UAB 9 TFL). UAB’s deepest penetration into SM territory was the S39 until late 4th Q. UAB did get to the S20 late 4th but were SOD off a 9p 65y drive (nearly double the yardage of any drive previous). SM had a 3p 21y TD “drive” after INT and also had a pick-six. Added a safety and a FG off a 6p 18y “drive”.

Mason Fine was knocked out of a game for the second time this season, leaving the game on NT’s second to last drive of the 1st H. After recovering a fumble deep in LT territory, NT went up 3-0, but LaTech would lead 17-3 HT, 31-3 end 3rd and 52-10 F. NT did miss a 2nd Q FG and threw an INT at the L12 in the 3rd Q and a INT at the L32 in the 4th Q. LT got 10 pts on short fields following turnovers and also got a pick-six. LT outgained them 542-339 (5.8-5.8) with 264 rushing yards. NT was just 2-of-11 3rd down.

FAU got out 10-0 then FIU ripped a 75y run. Just 13-7 HT turned into 37-7 Final…and could’ve been worse as FAU kicked 3 short FGs and ended the game at the FI07. FAU outgained them 579-304 (7.0-4.5) and outrushed them 261-112 (5.9-3.9). FIU maybe could’ve gotten a couple more scores, their last two drives was SOD at the FA09 and FA37 and threw a 1st H INT at the FA21.

Independents

BYU scored on their first 3 possessions of the game to lead 17-7 (Liberty missed a FG in that stretch). BYU’s FG was from the L07 and Liberty was SOD at the B37. The score was 17-7 HT with the yardage even at 214-213. Liberty had 14-11 FD edge. BYU fumbled at the L22 to open the 3rd and Liberty drove 12p 72y for FG…17-10. The teams then traded TDs on dual 41y passes. 24-17 entering the 4th. BYU threw a deep INT from midfield and Liberty punted. BYU drove for TD…31-17, teams traded punts with BYU punting from their own EZ. Liberty went 4p 46 for TD…31-24 mid 4th. BYU drove to the L30 with under 2min left and faked a FG on 4th-and-2 but were stopped for a loss. Unfortunately for Liberty they couldn’t do anything with their final possession. A desperation 4th-and-21 pass was dropped right the first down sticks. BYU outgained them 471-431 (6.7-5.7) and surprisingly only outrushed them 165-128 (4.6-.4.3).

UMass and Army were tied 7-7 1st Q. Army won 63-7 with the Knights finishing with a 34-7 FD edge and 498-26 RY, 546-125 TY (6.5-2.6) edges.

West Virginia lost 38-17 but had a 549-481 TY edge, but were -4 turnovers. Texas Tech scored TDs on their first 5 possessions including a 6p 24y drive after an INT. TT led 35-10 with 357 1st H yards, but WVU had 271 yards leading to just 10 pts in the half. In the 1st H WVU was in the RZ twice and got just 3 pts with their other RZ possession ending in a fumble at the T13. Later in the 1st H WVU would be SOD at the T22. In the 2nd H WVU was SOD at T11, threw INT from the T17 in the EZ (trick play flea flicker) and finally SOD the T04. For the game WVU failed to score on 4 of 6 RZ trips! Duffey 24-34-354-1-0. Kendall 26-43-355-0-2. Coaches said there were 4 drops or he would’ve had over 300y. They got Doege in the game for his first action late 11-17-119-1-0.

Texas finished with a 477-304 TY edge including 214-51 RY edge in the 27-24 win. KSt jumped out 14-0 on a 70y TD pass and a 8p 63y drive. Texas only had 4 real 1st H possessions, missing a FG on their first and on their TD drive, had to convert a 4th down to keep it alive. KSt fumbled at the T38 late 2nd Q. 14-7 HT KSt led. Texas tied on a 34y TD run to open the 3rd Q. Then took the lead on a 36y FG. Texas threw an INT at the K02. Early 4th a 53y punt ret set up Tex for a 3p 21y TD “drive”…24-14. KSt responded with a 98y KO ret TD…24-21. After Texas punted, KSt’s drive was aided by a targeting penalty and would end up going 9p 45y for the tying FG….24-24 mid 4th Q. Texas’ game winning drive was keyed by a 3rd-and-14 conversion to the K13, from there 4 Ehlinger rushes set up Dicker’s 26y game winning FG as time expired.

Inadvertently, I bet on WV twice. I make that boo boo rarely, but whenever I do, I wind up on the losing side. Wish it would go my way once.

Here is how close Max Dugan was to tying the game in 3rd OT.

TCU went up 3-0 after TE dropped ball in EZ. They traded INTs in the 1st Q. Baylor was held under 100y in the 1st H. Baylor missed a 32y FG at the end of a 15p 80y 7min drive. TCU made a 37y FG following a 11p 60y drive to lead 6-0 with :25 left in the half. Baylor would fumble the ensuing KO handing TCU the ball at the B24 and Frogs added a FG to lead 9-0 HT. Baylor got on the board to open the 3rd with a 36y FG. Near the end of the 3rd Q Baylor got an INT ret’d down to the T08 but TCU held them to a 24y FG…9-6. Mid 4th, Baylor converted a 3rd-and-20 with a 28y catch and run, but it came back with illegal downfield and they punted. TCU went 3-and-out and Baylor got it back with 3:23 left. Brewer ran for 26y, then they converted 3rd down and got a PI to the T25. They took a shot in the EZ but overthrew a would-be TD. With :36 left Baylor nailed a 51y FG to tie…9-9. In OT1 Baylor converte 3rd down twice and went up 16-9. TCU appeared to be incomplete OOB in the EZ on 4th down, but replay ruled TD and it was tied 16-16. TCU went up 23-16 in OT2 and Baylor tied on a 4th down 20y TD catch…23-23. In OT3 Baylor scored TD, 2pt no good…29-23. TCU appeared to have a TD, but QB stepped OOB by review. TCU still had 1st and goal at the B03. After 2nd down Baylor was called for facemask, 3 plays later TCU was called for holding. TCU’s 4th down pass into the EZ was INT’d. Baylor had 22-18 FD edge. TCU outgained them 308-294 (3.8-4.0). TCU lost 3 TOs, Baylor lost 2. Each team got 3 sacks.

Northwestern put up 435 total yards, their second highest of the year (441 vs UNLV). Purdue was outgained by 90 yards and trailed 14-0 after NW’s first two possessions. Oddly (or not?), NW would not run another offensive play in Pur territory the rest of the half. Purdue cut it to 14-7, then NW got a safety after a sack/grounding in the EZ to lead 16-7. Pur scored on back-to-back possessions in the 3rd Q to take a 21-16 lead while NW continued to struggle in the 3rd although they did get to the P27 SOD. In the 4th NW took over at the P46 and drove that 4 plays for a TD and a 22-21 lead (2pt no good). NW was on a clock killing drive..14p 48y eating up over 7min, but NW missed a 32y FG off the upright! 2:30 left. Pur was driving and on 4th down NW D got INT but were called for PI with under 1min left giving Pur the ball back at the N24. Pur made a 39y FG as time expired. 24-22. This was the second straight game winning drive Purdue QB Aidan O’Connell has led.

PAC12

Washington had a 20-6 FD edge and outgained Oregon St 420-119 and held OSU to just 8 yards in the 2nd H, yet only won 19-7. Washington missed 2 FGs and ended the game at the O25. Oregon St’s only score was a pick-six. Oregon St ran a total of 3 plays in UW territory the entire game!. UW RB Salvon Ahmed ran for career high 174 yards.

Colorado and Stanford each scored on their opening drives…7-3 Buffs. Early 2nd Q CU was picked off on 1st down at the S25. Stanford appeared to have a TD, but Fehoko’s foot was ruled OOB on replay and Tree settled for a 36y FG…7-6 mid 2nd. Stanford would then have a deep pass INT’d and CU drove to the S23 with a first down, but limited by time had to settle for a 34y FG to lead 10-6 HT. Stanford opened the 3rd Q with a 12p 79y drive but stalled in the RZ and would miss a 32y FG. Punts until Tree connected on a 75y TD pass for their first lead…13-10 early 4th. CU drove 14p 69y and Nixon dropped a pass at the goal line and CU tied on a 23y FG…13-13. Stanford went 3-and-out. CU took over with 6min left. They would go 13p 61y, aided by a PI and converted a 4th-and-1 with a Shenault run getting the game winning 37y FG as time expired. Stanford was in the RZ twice and only netted 3 pts. CU was in the RZ 4x coming away with 1 TD and 3 FGs. CU had a 24-15 FD edge, Tree outgained them 372-358 (6.9-5.0). The 372 yards allowed by CU was their best defensive effort on the year, and also held an opponent under 30 for the first time this year. Stanford converted just 3-of-10 3rd downs (CU was 6-of-14). CU had 9 possessions, Stanford had 8.

USC jumped out 14-0 on two long drives when ASU got a 97y KO ret and would make it 14-7. But 58y and 95y USC TD passes made it 28-7 end of 1st Q. Slovis went 15-17-297-4-0 – in the 1ST Q! Over the final 3 Q Slovis was just 14-22-135-0-1. Behind Tr Fr ASU QB Joey Yellen making his first ever start, ASU expectedly struggled although he did hit a 63y TD pass to make the score 28-13 (xpt no good). Each team threw an INT near the goal line in the 1st H. Benjamin fumbled at the U46. ASU came out with a nice TD drive to open the 3rd…28-20. USC lost their rhythm in the 2nd and 3rd Q and with Slovis cramping Fink led a FG drive 31-20 entering the 4th Q. USC got an INT, but roughing the passer wiped it out and ASU would go on for TD, 2pt no good. 31-26. Fink threw an INT that was ret’d for ASU TD, but there was defensive holding to wipe it out and Slovis came back in. Punts. ASU started at their own 10 with 3:29 left. They converted 3rd down twice and got all the way to the SC32, but Yellen threw a 1st down INT to end the game with :25 left. USC outgained them 547-339 (7.5-5.2) with both teams struggling to run SC 70RY (2.5) to ASU’s 47RY (2.2). Yellen is not mobile like Daniels is, SC bottled up Benjamin (20att-52y). USC’s 4th string RB Christon had 20att-62y). Both team only got 1 sack. CU had 9 possessions, Stanford had 8.

Washington State threw an INT on the second play of the game and Cal got a 1p 27y “drive” for TD, but WSt blk’d xpt and ret’d it the other way…6-2. Punts. Cal fumbled at their own 32, WSt ret’d to the C19, but couldn’t move the ball and kicked a 30y FG…6-5 late 1st Q. Cal outgained them 152-64 in the opening quarter on a similar number of plays. Cal got a 48y pass on their way to a 7p 75y TD drive to lead 13-5 early 2nd Q. WSt punted and Cal was SOD at the W32. More punts until WSt finally got the O going with under 5min left, Wazzou went 10p 85y scoring TD with :40 left in the half…13-11 (2pt no good). In the 1st H Cal ran 30 plays for 205y to Wazzou’s 35 plays for 172y. WSt was just 1-of-6 3rd down (Cal was 3-of-6). Cal punted to open the 3rd, but WSt fumbled on their first play and Cal got a 4p 39y TD drive to lead 20-11. WSt returned the ensuing KO to the 50, but were called for a 15y penalty backing them up to their own 8 yard line. The penalty was in fact on Cal and 15y should've been added on to the end of the return, but officials error cost WSt enormous amount field position (PAC 12 official suspended). WSt went 13p 74y for 35y FG. Ccal was aided by back-to-back 15y WSt penalties but had a 39y FG blk’d early 4th Q. WSt was SOD at the C14. Cal got a 52y TD pass mid 4th to lead 26-14. WSt was SOD at their own 35 on 4th-and-15. While running out the clock, Modster ran for 13y TD on 4th down…33-14 2:26 left. WSt went 8p 81y and scored TD with just :05 left in the 33-20 F. 13 points were scored in the final 2-1/2 minutes. Had Modster just got the first down and fell down the game would’ve ended 26-14. Total yards even at 426-423 (81 garbage yards by WSt). Cal had a yard per play of 7.1-5.9. Cal outrushed them 196-16 (5.4-1.1). WSt was only 3-of-12 3rd down to Cal’s 50%. WSt was in the RZ 5x resulting in 2 TDs and 2 FGs. Cal was three for three TDs on their RZ trips. Gordon 45-58-407-2-1. Modster 16-24-230-3-0 added 43 net yards rushing.
