How awesome would it be if Suarez dives against England, and wins a pen. Would love to watch that.

No high hopes for England in the country this year,no over optimistic views.

I love that the squad is going to be full of the younger players(it hasnt been named yet but rumours are out)
Kind of excited to see the young lads go and have fun, some pace in there, speed kills :)
Hope Woy lets them go and just play attacking, fun football, you never know

Goalkeepers: Fraser Forster, Ben Foster, Joe Hart

Defenders: Leighton Baines, Gary Cahill, Phil Jagielka, Glen Johnson, Phil Jones, Luke Shaw, Chris Smalling
Midfielders: Ross Barkley, Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana, Frank Lampard, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Raheem Sterling, Jack Wilshere
Strikers: Rickie Lambert, Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge, Danny Welbeck
Standby list: John Ruddy, Jon Flanagan, John Stones, Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Jermain Defoe, Andy Carroll

Rooney.....Sturridge.....Sterling....Ox.....at least there is some exciting players with some pace. Just hope they beat Italy.

i mentioned the other thread, speed/pace is useless with the way England plays.
Those boys will fatigued quickly if all they do is run especially when they play in Manaus.

Everytime I see Pirlo's face, I think about the new NIke commercial where the kid calls Pirlo's name on the free kick and it smokes him in the face

Italy
Uruguay
England
Costa Rica

In that order. I do not like this England squad at all.

Status of Suarez is crucial. What exactly did he get done?

I like the England team, IMO it is a lot better than 4 years ago

its a straight forward meniscus surgery, he should be good to go.
he's a better position to play than Diego Costa was playing in CL final.

Costa Rica dealt a pretty crippling blow with Alvaro Saborio also missing the World Cup with a broken metatarsal. He is the leading scorer in the history of Real Salt Lake and led the Ticos with eight goals during the Hexagonal. He was their oldest and most experienced player as well and this leaves the Ticos with just Cristian Bolanos as the only player with WC experience (2006 Germany). It also means they are without their best defender (Oviedo) and most experienced attacker. Joel Campbell will likely be at the front of the 4-5-1, with the bus being fully parked from the outset while they look for counters in the second half, hoping that the european teams will wilt in the heat. It's winter now in Uruguay, as well.

Aquilani got hurt for the Italians today, as did Montolivo. The Montolivo injury will likely sideline him from the event, so it's not insignificant, to be sure.

He is an OK player ( for MLS), but I didn't think he was one of their top strikers ( could be dead wrong). With or without him I can't see them doing anything in this tournament.

braves - he is unquestionably their top striker. That said, he's been a source of consternation for many fans down here for a long time (ever since he left for the MLS for sure). They don't have much offense and that's a reflection on the coach and his philosophies. They are the opposite of the entertaining Latin teams that people stereotype for most teams in this region. They have tons of team speed and will run circles around the whole group. But the physicality of the Euro players will take its toll on them most likely, and even with some euro-based talent, getting out of the group is going to be a tall order. I do think they can play spoiler and they were the best team in CONCACAF during qualifying for a majority of the 2013 year.

CKR-- Costa RIca isn't going run circle around anyone in this group. The discrepancy in quality is vast.

I don't think Saborio would even make US team

A

run circles = speed. There is little doubt in my mind that one edge CR has over the teams in its group is overall speed. Quality, not a chance. And they will get physically brutalized, which is why I don't give them much of a chance to get out. Although I noticed SPI or some shit on ESPN showed that they have a 37 percent chance to get out, which seems abnormally high to me when looking at the markets on them.

guess i would have to disagree. Uruguay and England imo have better athltetes and speed then CR..

being physical or how physical a team is is way overrated...Look at Spain

Its all about talent

if that's the case then CR is in huge trouble, lmao... i still think the Uruguay line in the first game is too high. CR is a much better team than they were in late 2009, Uruguay is probably a bit worse, and CR still played Uruguay almost even over 180 minutes. Had they scored one more goal in Montevideo, they would have qualified for South Africa and the eventual semifinalists would have been left at home.

i think especially once you get to the knockout phase, all of the minnows will be gone and it turns into a crapshoot. Dogs at that point have added value. In the group stage, with the goal differential being in play, some of these +1.25 type dogs that look good on paper end up peckering out on the field...

what is speed going to do against teams that can easily defend and control the tempo?
if anything they would be running around like a headless chicken and speed in the heat will just make them more fatigue.
as braves mentioned they won't be a threat whatsoever

without two of their top players, there's a chance they won't score a goal or get a point. i think you are dismissing them too easily and they will impact who gets out of the group. my humble opinion only...

i think you are over thinking them.
yes we all already knew that CR will be the whipping boys and yes we know that GD will be a major difference.
so if you are saying they won't score a goal or get a point why are we even discussing their impact?

Okay, just started sending in bets on WC as I've seen a few friendlies now, thinking how teams will shape up, what have you.

I played England to qualify and to win group (small)

Few key injuries, Costa Rica basically dead in the water here, will be overmatched each game. Almost willing to bet them finishing rock bottom at -375.

That leaves 3 teams to qualify. Montolivo injury has to be a concern for Italy. He's been a mainstay in their midfield, and while Italians have others to take over, I think he interplayed best with Pirlo tbh. I also just can't seem to back the Italians with their best striking option to be a major head case. They will defend great for sure, and the fact they have what, three defenders from one of the best defensive teams in the world is pretty solid, but they are not playing a 3-4-3 I believe, so I'm not sure exactly how this well effect them. Either way, Italy should be a tough nut to crack, but to win the group, you need to score.
Uruguay has best offensive attack, but Suarez injury again needs be a concern. Forlan's best is well behind him, but don't sleep on a few of these guys that play in Brazil, mainly my Lodeiro who I really really like. Defense is decent, but gk not a huge strength. If Suarez is at his best, Uruguay probably the team to beat, but if not....
England may have the most rounded team in the group. No glaring weaknesses, in my eyes, although no major strengths. GK is good, defense should be good, midfield should be decent, and attack should be solid. It will just be getting the right mix here for England for them to have a shot.
that's that.

Two teams in this group played in friendlies today. I watched most of both of them.

England and Ecuador played in a very high-level game - for the first 25 minutes or so. Ecuador's pace was amazing. Unfortunately, the game started at 3 pm at the Miami Dolphins (samuel meatbizzles style again) Stadium. Prolly 8k people there, and I think it was an Ecuador "home game", judging by the sponsors, though the crowd was 50/50 ish. After the sweltering heat took over, the quality of play quickly plunged. Ecuador's first goal was a header and with the run of play. England had the best of it for an hour, and went up 2-1, then wilted the last 15-20 mins. Wilshere went down (and eventually out) with cramps late. I think Ecuador equalized with about 20 mins left. It seemed like many folks were miserable there. I guess both were trying to prep for the heat they expect down in Brazil with the mid-afternoon starts. It should be noted that Joe Hart did not play in goal, at least not in the first half. I don'[t think he ever checked in but I never looked at the box.

Italy played at home to Luxembourg and completely shit the bed. There wasn't even a line offered on Don Best (yet they had Argentina laying -3 or -3.25 goals on the screen as a 15-to-1 or more favorite) for the Italians, who were outplayed the first 10 mins before getting a score against the run of play. They eventually took control and were the better team the rest of the way, but Luxembourg equalized late, sometime after the 75th minute (I missed the goal as I was also trying to watch Holland/Wales and the aforementioned game at the Dolphins stadium) and ended up with a 1-1 draw. Not an inspiring effort for the Italians.

England made 10 changes from the team that played in the friendly last week

it was essentially the 2nd squad plus Rooney being played out of position on the left just to help his fitness

nevertheless a good result, England are scoring and that's really key funny how in the last few months certain teams that looked meh are now actually peaking at the right time.
England to win the group actually looks pretty decent. I can really see them going 1W 2D 0L or 2W 1D 0L

ya I think of the 3 big teams in that group

Uruguay have by far the weakest Midfield and back line

and I think even though it's in the jungle England's style is something Italy won't want, especially in a game 1

its good value

watched most of this game (and about 12 others at the same time in 3 different sports); no reason to write the story when it's fairly short and sweet and the AP did it for me...

AP) -- Ireland and Costa Rica played a 1-1 draw in a pre-World Cup exhibition game dubbed as Freedom Cup 2014 on Friday night.Ireland struck in the 18th minute when Kevin Doyle headed home a cross from Marc Wilson. But the Irish couldn't hold the lead against short-handed Costa Rica. In the 41st minute, defender Giancarlo Gonzalez was handed a red card. The Ticos never stopped hustling and tied the game at 1 in the 64th minute. After a foul in the penalty area crease, Celso Borges scored on a penalty kick, sending the large throng of Costa Rica fans into a cheering frenzy.
Just two minutes later, Ireland had a chance to take the lead on a penalty kick. But Robbie Keane, who has scored seven goals and three assists for the Los Angeles Galaxy this season, was stymied by goalkeeper Patrick Pemberton.
