[h=2]Clinch close, O's return to Baltimore vs. Yankees[/h] [h=3]Split doubleheader begins 10-game homestand for AL East leaders[/h] By David Wilson / MLB.com | 9/12/2014 1:50 AM ET

BAL@TB: Gausman strikes out seven over seven innings

Not since 1969 have the Orioles gotten the opportunity to celebrate a division title in Baltimore. After a sweep of the Red Sox in Boston, the O's magic number is down to 8. The earliest they can clinch the division is Monday since the Blue Jays won on Wednesday night.
Baltimore, which opens up a 10-game homestand and a four-game series with a doubleheader against the third-place Yankees on Friday, can clinch the division some time during the next week at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
"If there comes a day where that is the day that something like that we could be fortunate enough to have it happen, then we can talk about it," O's manager Buck Showalter said, "but we've got a lot of roads to cross there."
Baltimore will have Kevin Gausman (7-7) on the hill for the first game of the doubleheader. New York will start Brandon McCarthy in the first game, and Bryan Mitchell will make his first Major League start against the O's Bud Norris in the nightcap.
The Yankees, who are trying to patchwork together a lineup while dealing with injuries, have had trouble producing runs, a problem recently highlighted when Alex Cobb held them hitless for nearly eight innings before the Yankees mounted a late comeback against the Rays' bullpen for a walk-off win Thursday night.
"Guys need to step up, that's the bottom line," said manager Joe Girardi. "I've said all along, it takes more than 25 guys to win and get into the playoffs. I'm not sure what it's been for us but I know it's a lot. It's not what you want, but it's what it is and you've got to deal with it."
Even if a sweep won't clinch the division for the O's, it's at least guaranteed to eliminate the Yankees from AL East contention.
"That's something to talk about. I understand," Showalter said. "I don't think it matters who it is. If we are playing the Nationals or if we are playing somebody in the spring, and if the fans think it is important, then it should be important to us."
Yankees: Tanaka to take hill in Florida
Masahiro Tanaka is set to throw an instructional league game at the Yankees' Minor League facility in Tampa, Fla., on Monday as he attempts to make his way back to the Majors this season after partially tearing the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.
"We're trying to finish off his rehab in a proper way, guided by the experts on the medical staff ... as well as clearly Tanaka's conversation about how he's feeling," said general manager Brian Cashman. "We're going to see if he'll be in a position to A, help us this year and B, be an expected player for us next year."
Cashman said that if Tanaka isn't healthy by the end of the season, the Japanese righty will continue to rehab until he experiences no pain.
"Hopefully, he's at the back end, the finishing end of this, and he we'll have another pitcher to utilize here as the season starts to run down," said Cashman.
Orioles: Hardy slated to return
J.J. Hardy hasn't played since Friday against the Rays due to a back injury and, after he received a cortisone shot in his sacroiliac joint on Tuesday, Baltimore expects its shortstop to be back in the starting lineup for Friday's doubleheader against the Yankees.
"The MRI [on Tuesday] was unchanged since April, so he will come in for treatment on Thursday and hope he's ready to go on Friday," Showalter said. "That's what we were kind of expecting."
The O's feel optimistic that they got out in front of Hardy's injury. The shortstop missed six games in April due to lower back spasms, including five in a row.
Worth noting
• Alejandro De Aza has hit safely in all six games since joining the Orioles. The outfielder is batting .375 with two home runs and two steals with Baltimore.
• Martin Prado (left hamstring), Brett Gardner (abdominal) and Carlos Beltran (right elbow) were all out of the Yankees' lineup for Thursday's game against the Rays. However, Prado entered in the eighth with a pinch-hit home run, and Girardi is confident that Gardner will see game action over the weekend.

It wouldnt surprise me to see a fast moving game early with the drawn to one being late with the rookie 1st start and bullpen action.

Happ's current form seems unplayable which might interest me if I had more info on the Tampa starter.

I would agree tuck. However, it's not a play on happ, hence why I like the over as well. Jays bats are hot, as unlikely as the post season is, they are playing hard. Karens is making is season debut tonight. He had three starts with the nats last year posting an average era over 7. He's currently 9-9 triple A with an era over 5. I believe the jays are gonna touch him up a bit tonight .Jays and over coorelated parlay for me. Bol.

I like Alvarez.....just looking for a slight regression in hamels from last start. Like the bats a little better too. Big tag for the marlins...think cole is over priced.

Do you gentleman think the bats are coming out in this second game against the rook and Gausman, or will the extra innings make a difference? Thanks...

I dont think KC has the bats to hang on. Pitching has been great and defense, until last night, has been great. They are just too shitty at the plate, take no walks and have little to no pop.

Its a very tall order. But those last 3 games against Baltimore, you got to expect Baltimore to be resting guys. Toronto playing really good ball right now. If they go out and get a sweep of Tampa this weekend, I think they have a very good chance. It will come down to the 4 game series with Seattle. Need them to go 3-1 at least. I think if they go 13-4, they get in.
