Cincinnati Reds vs. Philadelphia Phillies
Friday, August 13, 2021 at 7:05 p.m. ET at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia

Mahle The Road Warrior

Red starter Tyler Mahle is a uniquely strong bet on the road.

Cincinnati is 9-3, generating +7.6 units, in his road starts so far.

In two of those three losses, the Red lineup gave him precisely zero help as it was shut out.

Mahle's strong betting numbers on the road are a consequence of his amazing road stats.

Whereas he yields a 5.74 ERA at home, his ERA is 2.06 on the road.

In a sense, this disparity is not too surprising because his home ballpark is known to be very hitter-friendly.

He stands a much better chance, therefore, in other ballparks.

Mahle vs. Philly Batters

Mahle stands a great chance in Philadelphia tonight because he matches up well against the Philly lineup.

Primarily, he throws a fastball-slider combo. These pitches combine to make up over 80 percent of his arsenal.

Philadelphia, however, ranks 22nd in slugging against Mahle's two favorite pitches combined from righties.

Plus, the Phillies show poor hitting form. They have failed to exceed three runs in any of their past four games.

Zack Wheeler vs. Red Batters

In contrast to Mahle, Philly starter Zack Wheeler is disadvantaged tonight from a match-up perspective.

Wheeler, too, concentrates on a fastball-slider combo. But Cincy ranks fifth in slugging .454 against these two pitches from righties.

The Reds will look to prolong their strong hitting form -- they've accrued 18 runs in their past two games, both of which took place on the road.

Count on, among others, the sizzling Joey Votto, who is 3-for-8 (.375) with a double in his career against Wheeler.

Milwaukee Brewers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
Friday, August 13, 2021 at PNC Park in Pittsburgh

Brett Anderson

As if you needed more reasons to bet on Milwaukee against lowly Pittsburgh, here are a few.

Brewer starter Brett Anderson enjoys superb form. He has allowed a combined total of four runs in his past five games.

His strong form has persisted despite facing lineups like San Francisco's and Atlanta's, which rank top-10 in runs per game. In contrast to these lineups, Pittsburgh ranks in last place in runs per game.

Anderson vs. Pirate Batters

Pirate batters haven't seen that much of Anderson. But their numbers against him so far merit added pessimism towards their chances today.

In a combined total of 50 career at-bats against Anderson, they have one extra-base hit, a double.

Their collective BA is .120 and their collective slugging rate .140 against Anderson.

Gregory Polanco, for example, is 0-for-9 lifetime against him.

Mitch Keller's Bad Chances

In contrast to Anderson, Pirate starter Mitch Keller suffers poor form.

Keller has yielded an ERA of well over 7.00 in each of his last four starts.

Since August 10, the Brewers have been red hot both in general and in their hitting.

They currently enjoy a four-game win streak as part of which they've amassed 27 runs in their past two games combined.

During this four-game span, they're slugging .625 against Keller's three primary pitches, the fastball, slider, and curveball, from righties combined.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Kansas City Royals
Friday, August 13, 2021 at 8:10 p.m. ET at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City

Jack Is Back

After multiple minor-league tune-ups, Cardinal starter Jack Flaherty is ready.

While his absence from the MLB has been long, it is not right to expect him to be rusty because he's looked good in these tune-ups where stats mean nothing and appearances are everything.

Flaherty vs. Royal Batters

Flaherty looks particularly promising tonight because he matches up well against Royal batters.

His favorite pitches are the fastball and slider, which together make up nearly 80 percent of his arsenal.

Against these two pitches from righties combined, the Royals rank 23rd in slugging .397.

Minor Hopes Tonight

Royal starter Mike Minor has allowed four runs and two home runs in each of his past two games.

Expect these struggles to continue against a Cardinal lineup that is built to dominate left-handed pitching.

St. Louis' lineup is righty heavy with big names like Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado.

Goldschmidt, in particular, contributes to the .386 BA and .737 slugging rate that St. Louis hitters enjoy in 57 collective at-bats against the Royal southpaw.

The Verdict

Cincinnati will pull off an upset tonight. But with the great odds the Reds are receiving in Philadelphia, we might as well take the extra run by playing the run-line.

Milwaukee will stay hot and race past bottom-feeder Pittsburgh. For St. Louis, Flaherty is back and ready to exploit a huge pitching advantage.
