Man... I loved it when it was the days of Bannister being a dog. Shit

Johnny on the spot with these discussion (aka SportsNut's picks) threads!

BTW, I have tix to Hornets v Mavs Game 1 Saturday night. Party at the Hornets' Nest!!!

Its Midnight the game @ Shea just ended...hard to believe they fly out before 3 AM..2 hours to FLA...get to the hotel and all that...hard to imagine they get in before 6 AM....granted it still a 7 PM game...still seems like a tough spot for them...hard to not want to fade that at near even money even vs Andrew Miller. This team isnt a hitting a lick..14 innings and 6 hits...what did they score 5 , 6 runs the whole series? No 4 and they played 33 innings......and just 25 runs in the previous 8 games....tough to win like that..so maybe another under as well? Also kinda hard to not like Philly at home with hamels vs what could be atired Mets team granted there trip is a bit shorter but there opponent is alot tougher...as good as Sheets has been how can they be road chalk vs a RHP? As attractive as Cain looks the Cards lineup is really tough and I wonder just how many road games SF will win with a injury riddled lineup..not sure Young is right have to look into that possibility Haren has been as advertised.....Tor more because of the SP situation then anything else..Yanks ....-140 all day..Mendoza has some value if he can be consistent..gonna look to fade Dice K when he pitches on normal rest he was terrible vs NYY compared to previous outings...Under in TB...have to look more at Javys splits and Niemans 1st outing but maybe TB...Cliff Lee seems to be in a groove and Liriano is finishing up Spring Training...except these games count..

Thats all game @ Wrigley Hill is on thin ice as he is struggling great opponent for him in Pitt as they struggle vs LHP. Lean Cubbies.....:shake:See you guys in the AM ...:cheers:voice your opinions and concerns !

According to this, Young and Maddux have switched...books haven't updated it yet...I really like Zona and Haren tomorrow as Maddux has horrible #'s at Chase field and the Pads will be coming off an extra inning marathon.

Padres flip-flop Maddux, Young in rotation

SAN DIEGO (AP)—Greg Maddux will go for his 350th career victory Friday at Arizona, a day earlier than originally scheduled.
The San Diego Padres flip-flopped their scheduled starters for the first two games of the weekend series, with Maddux (2-0, 2.00 ERA) set to go Friday against Dan Haren and Chris Young (1-1, 5.17) going Saturday night against Edgar Gonzalez.
Manager Bud Black said Maddux likes to stay on his five-day rotation and that Young had a little more stiffness in his elbow than usual.
Young threw 80 pitches in three-plus innings in an 11-1 loss at the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday night. He allowed seven runs, seven hits and four walks, retiring only nine of the 21 batters he faced.

Anyone notice Carlyle pitched the 9th today and is listed at the SP for Friday? Think that would have change..

wow...didn't know that. and maddux, though still good, is not going deep into games anymore.

Ian Snell at plus money is joocy........

Pitt also got swept by the Cubs last week, little payback could be coming.....

Pitt off of one day of rest (albeit heavy travel)...

guessing they are starting maddux for his veteran leadership here. they need someone they know will throw strikes because they have no one left to pitch out of the bullpen lol. young has had control probs all year and they cant afford a high pitchcount. have to go with a guy who will go out and throw strikes. that is what i am thinking that they are thinking ... or maybe young got a hangnail who knows.

do i bite at the matt cain apple again ??? guy is burning my money.

At first look here's what I like:

- Indians with Lee who's started this season on a good note after last year's disaster. A well played game from last night vs Detroit could be a lift-off for them to start playing like they're capable of..

- Royals with excellent Brian Bannister - this guy is underrated along with whole Royals team and while the A's are having problems of their own, this may be my favorite play of the day

- Dodgers - I'm thinking the Braves may win the series but this 1st game is definitely Dodgers' best choice. They have excellent Derek Lowe going vs Buddy Carlyle (9-10, 5.91 ERA in his career). Lowe has been pitching great so far and finally he got enough run support and won his 1st game of the season last time so why not make it two in a row? :D

- Cincinnati - something with this line just isn't right. Both teams have had their share of struggles and at the same time - they showed some life in their most recent games (they both won) so while my gut is telling me that the Brew-Crew may win the series, I somehow like Arroyo in this spot and probably will take the Reds tonight.

- Diamondbacks starting Danny Haren who'll be opposed by Greg Maddux. Everyone saw how "clutch" were the Padres last night in that crazy 22-inning marathon with the Rockies (note I've passed on them today) - and considering they're going vs ex A's ace, I'll probably take Zona RL.

- Nationals - I see a nice value on them. Tim Redding is no joke plus he's been outstanding when pitching at Dolphins Stadium (2-0, 0.66 ERA with .180 BAA). Nats are hitting a bit better vs LHP and I remember Andrew Miller, from the time when he was still pitching for Tigers... just bad.

- I'm also considering Tampa with Jeff Niemann who's been a pleasant suprise in his first ML start...

Are the AStros and D'backs worth a bet purely on what their opponents went through last night?

Last few days it seems that someone has a hardon for the A's they open up as dogs and close at favs. Unforunately for that "group" the Mariners spanked them twice and they are probably creating value in Bannister. Gonna have to look at that game based on the move alone....

Still like Philly as NYM swept the Nats and was sort of a draining affair last night creating a long night. One thing that stuck is out is NY didnt hit much and now they face Cole Hamels. Want to see hi sprevious starts vs NY though. Santana pitches and the hype follows. I mean how is NY favored in Philly ace vs ace? Does anyone not agree that Hamels at his sharpest isnt just as good as Johan at his? The differnece is consistency and longevity.....

Jays have lost 5 straight at home. Off the top of my head I dont know or recall anything about Purcey so want to read on him. Rogers might be a big fade on the road this year or at least until we see if he gains some velocity back. Remember how hard he was throwing in 2006..90-93 MPH consistenly...his down in Mussina territory...86-88 MPH...huge difference..maybe alot of runs...11 is high but for a reason possibly...

Lets see if mytheory about Phil Hughes and weather holds somewhat true. Should be a beautiful night and the O's stole won last night much to my benefit though. Yanks bats have woken up some the past week but there SP has been pretty brutal past few. Girardi already said that Hughes NEEDS o step up here.

Hard to back Andrew Miller and need to see if I can pinpoint any correctable issues with him. However Wash is not hitting at all and they scored 4 times in 33 innings in NY and thats 29 runs in the past 11 games for them . That goes beyond oppositions pitching. Redding is up and down ...hard to trust him on the road....think Nats went from 3-0 to 1-11 , 1-12...basically even money how can we pass on FLA especially with a taxed pen possibly and definite long , long night to get to Fla.

Brewers vs RHP...give me Arroyo...Sheets is on fire but Cincy has alot of tough LHB in what should be a pitchers duel....4-3 Cincy

Niemann if I recall correctly throws very hard and thats a plus to face so many RHB that Chicago has....home pup they look interesting...Javy vs tough LH shoud struggle some...

Tribe and Lee...Liriano in extended Spring Training still...start by start he should show improvement but I think its foolish to expect him to pitch like 2006 this season ...

Hard to not like Zona....and LAA...but somewhat costly....

be back shortly to talk Pitt - Chicago:cheers:

Going with the Cubbies here...

Not crazy about trusting Rich Hill. he didnt seem to be bad vs Houston and after a rough 1st inning @ Pitt was pulled rather quickly by Pinella. He allowed 3 1st inning runs and 4 walks in 3 innings. Since then he has been demoted to the 5th spot in the rotation and basically been told he could be skipped if there are days off. I dont get it to be honest. Pinella seemed to pull the same crap with Marquis who has somewhat responded. Marquis a NYC kid might be a little mentally tougher and see it as a challenge though Marquis thinks he is alot better then he really is.

For all the ups and downs Pitt is 0-4 away when LHP starts and they are just 15/68 vs Hill with paulino getting the ebst of him 7/14. Bay and Castillo combined 0/26 ! The 4 starts 20.1 Inn 17 hits 1 Homer 10 runs only 7 earned 10 bb 18 Ks. they are 28/99 vs LH but alot of this is Ted Lilly aided.

Snell is struggling vs RHB so far allowing a 343 clip and Chi has 6 RHB which 4 are on a tear Johnson , Soto , Lee and DeRosa and Fuki in the midle from the LH side. Patterson is an unknown leading of but at least LH which usually give Snell a bigger problem. The guy slumping is Aramis Ramirez otherwise everyone pretty much maintains there splits through day games , Vs RH and home..Theroit 's are medicore as well....

Snell has had some issues vs Chi more at home though and against Soriano who is out. The lineup is 18/52 vs him with half of it never seeing him and DeRosa just 3 times...Ramirez does hit him but again he is slumping ...

Both pens are shaky IMO...sort of like the OVER but hate when lines move a full run....

I usually am concerned with SP days between starts but last year Hill seemed best with more then 5 days and he gets 7 here which is the limit...still an uncertainity but hoping sits a good sign...

Some Pitt players hit LHP real well last year but havent done as much to date this year and others like McLouth have exceeded expectations...dont think LaRoche hits 300 vs LHP again...Bay suprisingly not as good vs LHP

Cubs ML -140 and -1.5 +140{.75 each}:cheers:GL

<!--sphereit start-->LAKELAND, Fla. -- David Purcey couldn't help but be happy for Jesse Litsch. Both pitchers were with Double-A New Hampshire last season, but it was Litsch who received a call from the Blue Jays in May and headed north to help the big league club.

It was the type of promotion Purcey has been dreaming of since being selected 16th overall by Toronto in the 2004 First-Year Player Draft, but the 6-foot-5 left-hander wasn't going to get worked up over it. After all, this year could finally net a long-awaited callup for Purcey.
"Litsch did a good job," Purcey said. "He stepped up and pitched really well. I was happy for him. Last season, we were both at Double-A and ... I was happy for him. It was awesome. That's his childhood dream and we talked about it. I was just ecstatic for him."
On Thursday, Purcey made a one-inning relief appearance for the Blue Jays, who were visiting Joker Marchant Stadium for their Spring Training opener againt the Tigers. The big southpaw surrendered no runs, allowed one hit and provided a brief glimpse of his promise by striking out Detroit's Marcus Thames.
There's a chance that Purcey could play a role for Toronto sometime later this season. Should the Blue Jays' starting rotation run into health woes, Purcey might be one of the first pitchers considered for a promotion. Blue Jays manager John Gibbons didn't rule out the possibility that the lefty could help out in the bullpen, either.
"Down the road, you never know," Gibbons said. "He looks like, with the stuff he's got, like he could be a dominating guy out of the 'pen, too. When it's his time, who knows what's open anyway? But you hope sometime this year, if we need somebody, that he's one of the guys."
Last season, Purcey had his season with New Hampshire cut short due to a stress fracture in his left elbow and cysts in his left forearm. After going 3-5 with a 5.37 ERA over 11 starts, Purcey underwent surgery to correct both issues.
In the offseason, Purcey joined the Scottsdale Scorpions in the Arizona Fall League, where he rebounded with an impressive showing. In six starts, Purcey posted a 1.23 ERA with 25 strikeouts and nine walks over a span of 22 innings. Now he could be poised for his big league debut at some point in 2008. "I'm just going to try to go out and make my pitches," Purcey said, "and not really worry about the callup or whatever like that, because that's out of my control. So I'm not going to think about that too much."

Unicorn,

Justed wanted to let you know, you've identified three of the games already on that were not going to be listed. Well done. Something tells me, I should read your posts more often either that or this was just "dumb luck".

So we know DET has actually seen Purcey before even if its just the sole inning in the ST opener . We know Purcey was excellent in 6 Arizona Fall League starts which probably helped get ready quicker for Spring Training and in turn helped get off to a quick start at AAA. He went to college and is 26 playing at Oklahoma .

I think a plus for him is he was in a groove in AAA and was pitching every 5th day and will still be doing so tonight as hi slast start was the 13th (Sunday)...:shake:

Jays have faced 3 LHP who may sound medicore in Gabbard , Greg Smith and Dana Eveland but all have been real quality pitchers to date. Kenny Rogers continues to struggle on the road. He was solid vs KC at home and struggled both outiong away @ Boston and @ Chicago badly.

Det lit up Sabathia like everyone has , they hit Lester fairly hard and chased early 5 + inn 4 runs and worse 4 walks no Ks....but Buerhle put together a nice outing vs them .
Clearly Det will pound LHP but they could be contained by a good effort.....

Rogers had a solid home start vs them in2007 but hasnt pitch at Rogers Centre inawhile. Something like 6.1 9 h 2 runs 2bb 2ks...

15 hits and 7 walks in just under 9 innings away is a concern especially whenthey had 11 baserunners in 16.1 last year....Even back in 2006 when he was real good he was only medicore out of his division on the road...

Jays lost 5 straight at home now...but they have a nice edge in the pen IMO.....which could be big in this game....

Leaning hard towards Toronto but still looking at some things....:shake:

Pinella really keepin Hill on a short leash...done after 5 innings and 82 pitches..3 hits 1 run 3bb and 4k ..plus he walked the leadoff guy so he settled in...

Probably not going to be able to post much as I am way behind. Would encourage people to Not play Arizona today. Arizona is my favorite team I suppose but this line makes 0 sense to me. GL

I think I like the Mets over the Phils at -110. Hamels wasn't great against the Mets last year(.296 BAA, 1.67, Whip, 4 ERA in 4 games) and NY's offense is one of the best vL and on the road. Santana doesn't have a history with most of Philly's offense, but he looks favorable against the few he has faced. I also tend to believe facing the pitcher for a first time, especially one of Santana's quality, would give an extra advantage NYM way.

Maddux has been tough so far and doing pretty well vs RHB at 208. The difference is Zona doesnt sport all LHB anymore at onetime they had Shawn Green and Luis Gonzalez knocking out 40+ Hrs from the leftside then came Chad Tracey and I am sure there are players I cant recall.

The SD pen should be in good shape here. Off day on Monday . Wolf was excellent on Tuesday , and even Wed only Meredith came in and was torched...if needed Bell and Hoffman should be okay for an inning ...meredith as well for the 7th...so not that concerned...

Last year Maddux held Zone to 17/60 4 doubles , triple 1 hr and 5 rbi in 3 starts. Plus just 1 walk and 10 Ks . The career numbers arent pretty 28/88 vs MAddux. Still just 1 HR and 7 RBIs with 3bbs and 13Ks...

Flip side Haren struggles much more with RHB at about 265 last 2 + seasons. Bard probably gets the day off here but Gonzo only PH last night and Hairston and Edmonds split. I expect them to be n LF and CF this evening...SD limited at 8-29 vs Haren..

Fatigue may not be a big problem like it seems here for SD. I think after losing in 22 innings you come out a bit more focused even if you are lethargic...Think SD steals a close gam now......:shake:.

Little pissed I washed that Cubs game. Bad move playing the same anount n ML and -1.5 RL.. just poor decision making...

The 1st time look is important but also gets played out. Its a slight edge to the SP but again with so much video tape these days its might take 1 turn around the order to get comfortable.

Second Hamels vs this Mets lineup was 13/54 largey due to Delgados 4/7 off him. I dontreally like NY that much vs LHP until Alou returns. NY in the past had Alou , Nady real early last year even Milledge at times , plus LoDuca behind the dish all RH who are pretty solid vs LHP. You know have all LHB in there place Scheinder for LoDuca , Church for Nady , Milledge and Green , Pagan Switchhitter for Alou. So I think taht dfineitely weakens them and I wouldn also count on Delgado duplicating his numbers vs Hamels.

Also 19/78 career 9bb 23 ks vs this lineup. I would expect that Scheinder and a corner OF perhaps Church sit and we see Brady Clark.

Hamels filthy so far 22 innings only 11 hits. Both SP allow some HRS...but Santana who has been pretty good has allowed 4 Hrs in 20.2 and Phillies are swinging well. NY only scored 6,5, 3 vs Wash ...Look how well Chico and Lannan did vs this Met lineup as well...Granted Phillies lineup is weakned vs LHP with Utley and Howard but they can hold there own. Jenkins should sit for Werth , Taguchi again in center , Feliz back at 3rd....

Draining sweep I think for NY while Philly coasted and enjoyed the night off....

A coin flip looking at who is pitching better and swinging better plus home field I think all slightily favors Philly here....:cheers:

Excellent info - appreciate hearing the other side. Prolly still rolling with the Mets, though they do tend to bite me in the ass a lot.

Not sure how accurate this but if he were to sit huge loss vs the Mets here..Wright is only 1/11 with 5 Ks vs Hamels where as Beltran was 3/9 last yera , 4/12 career with 2 solo Hrs....

Rollins out as well..no suprise...

The "they havent seen him before angle" that you bring up Herm has been a goldmine this year ... sometimes i wish i would just play that angle blindly.

Here's my problem with that general statement. I think its best used when people say this guys sucks he will get hit and its a guy that is an unknown...more then when its one of the most well known SP in the game...Utely and Howard could have faced him in All Star game...

The deception I think is more about loose and inaccurate scouting reports more then anything nowadays...guys like Figuerora or fringe players liek Eveland or Albers...

You probably never get comfortable vs Johan AL Central teams probably got to see him 20-25 times and didnt figure him out...but its true they probably hit him better then some others have...

Another thing in regards to Hamels and Santana. Both tend to be better 2nd H pitchers we all know about Santana 's splits in that 3 year stretch...

NYM didnt face Hamels after 6/29 last year see the difference.....(clearly before the mid July break)

Thoughts and Plays-

Phillies -110 {1u maybe 2 u} Basically said all I had to say. Right now Hamels is the better SP IMO with the benefit of being home. Give Philly the slightily better lineup as well. As strange as it seems as easy as this under looks something aint right....thinking hard about either 1st 5 Over and / Or game over.....both guys allow HRs , beautiful day...last year Hamels hosted Maine with an 8.5 total which went way under...granted at Shea the 1st time they meet it was 7.5 but also needed extras to o over at 6-3...which tells me the meeting in Philly should have been lined at 8...so if Hamels vs Maine is 8...no doubt in my mind thi sshould be 7.5.....which makes me feel like they opened it at 8 and are keeping it there because they want UNDER 8 money...no reason for an 8 total.....mets didnt hit at home vs Wash and before yesterday Philly managed 5 runs in 2 games vs Houston which 4 came in the B9 of one game.....

Tigers -110 {1unit maybe 2} This fits more what Big Herm and VK spoke about not seeing a pitcher IMO. They did see him some in ST but it was a glimpse..and just 3 batters..somewhat interested in over 1st 5 or game ....Rogers strugling badly vs RH and jays to good vs LHP in my eyes to not take advantage..16 hits and 6 bbbs vs 2 Ks vs RHB so far thats a 400 clip..even last year 289 vs 197...both teams stacking the lineup with RHBs...little concerned about jays bottom though...maybe some 1st 5 Tor asw well...lost 5 straight at home and get a favorable matchup...just put in Over 6 even 1st 5 1 unit as it was moving...

yanks -140 {1u} I think Hughes problems last 2 starts where his inability to adjust to the cold weather. Honestly never saw anyone blow into there hands as much as he did vs Boston. He is young and maybe just not able to do it in those conditions YET. Hughes faced Balt twice late last year and did okay vs them and until recently had exceled on the road. Cabrera last year was not good at home or at nite sort of switch from 06. Think he has lost 5 of 6 to NYY at home but only his last home start was actually really bad... Yanks 6 of 8 away have played Under and despite series history just think it to big at 10.5...Hughes needs to step up and Cabrera at times has been decent vs them and with them not drawing many walks that may be abenefit... Under 10.5 {1u}

Rangers {.5u} just based on price...Dice K didnt look as sharp vs NYY and his track record indicates he doesnt pitch as well on 5 days rest. Texas has a bunch of LH and after a losing streak have won 2 straight....mendoza is an unknown and another kid who might be aided by not being seen before...needs to throw strikes was solid in the minors before Tor start...

marlins -120 {1u} Just fading Wash though after yesterdays loss probably not a good spot...Miller has been terrible ...just 1-12 and all I get is even money..consider this just a strong lean....like the UNDER 10 but last time they faced eachother we saw 17 and Wash pen taxed some maybe??

Reds +105 [2u} We all know about MILW problems vs RHP. Arroyo I think has gone at least 7 in every start vs Milw since coming back to the NL..like 6 or 7 starts...Sheets didnt pitch well vs Cincy last year and he was okay vs NYM...

Under 9 TB [2u} Pena and Crede out . Thome struggling vs RHP still..Konerko struggling...Floyd out for TB..No suprise Javy struggling vs LH and death to RHs...he was real solid at TB last year 7 inn 1 run 10Ks ....he was sharp vs DET but agaain all RH...now just 3 LH for TB thouugh...TB 1{u}..

LAD -130 {1unit} jeff Bennet will give a solid start but the rest of the pen is the issue. Lowe should match him...

Thats the jist for now.....:cheers:

Still pondering LAD or over 9.5..

Wound up...

Philly -110 {1.5u}
Over 4 1st 5 {1u}
Over 8 even {.75}

Jays 1st 5 and game ML {1u each}
Over 6 Jays 1st 5 inn {1u}

Yanks -1.5 RL +105 {1u}
Under 10.5 even {.75}

Rangers +200 {.5}

Marlins -120and Under 10 -105{.75 each}

Reds +110 {2u}

TB +100 {1u}
Under 9 -105 {1.75u}

8 PM so far...
Under 8.5 -115 Twins {1u}

Astros -140 {1u}

Flipped on the Twins game as the price got crazy...might go +1.5 Minny now...Liriano is behind but at least he is home and facing a team struggling vs LHP...Lee has been real sharp and expect it to continue but runs should be somewhat at a premium especially since I think Minny pen has something to prove after the DET series..basically all teh stuff with COL and the fact they have a LHP out there who is wild..Stros some big RHB....

more to come...men on base everywhere....:shake:

Purcey is looking like garbo. It's hard to believe i took u11. Tigers could score 7 on him in any inning with a couple hits in good timing..

Purcey looked like my plays...garbage early hopefully finish strong...bonehead decisions in the TB game...knew that was gonna be trouble...and overthought a play or two specifically the Met total...it happens...nice 1st Inning @ Houston..for the over...

gonna play SD to score 1st , SD 1st 5 and game....I see Wash and COL both off huge extra inning games come out scoring top 1st so hoping the trend continues.....

GL all and TrueBlue !
