  • Determining Race Line-Ups - Top 35 Guarantee: At the start of the 2005 seaspn, NASCAR instituted a new procedure for establishing the starting race field in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series [NNCS]. NASCAR revamped the system by simplifying the procedure with teams no longer accruing provisionals throughout the season to gain entry into the starting fields. While starting positions one through 42 in the NNCS still will be determined by qualifying speed, the new system will assure the highest-ranked 35 positions of the NNCS OWNER [not Driver] championship points that have entered the event prior to the entry deadline [usually 13 days before the day of the race] one of those starting positions in the field, providing they have made an attempt to qualify [which usually means the team at least practiced and made an effort to qualify].
The remaining seven positions [36-42] will be assigned to those drivers with the fastest qualifying speeds whose car owners are not among the top 35. The final starting position [43rd] – the champion’s provisional – can be utilized by a car owner whose driver is a current or past NASCAR NEXTEL Cup champion who participated as a driver during the current of previous season and was entered in the event for that owner in that car prior to the entry deadline.
If there is more than one series champion vying for the position, it will be given to the most recent series champion. If the final provisional starting position – 43rd in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup – is not filled by a current or past series champion, it will be assigned to the next eligible car owner according to qualifying results.
Through the first five races of the season for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup, the top 35 in the NNCS of the previous owner championship points entered in the event prior to the entry deadline will be assured one of the 42 starting positions in the field, provided they have made an attempt to qualify. From the sixth race on, the current owner championship points will be used to determine the top 35 each race week. In the event that conditions prevent qualifying from being run, starting positions will be assigned according to the respective series’ current Rule Book.(NASCAR PR)
Simple: so the field is set by speed to where the 7th fastest non-top 35 driver is on speed. The any drivers in the top35 of OWNERS [not drivers points] are placed to the 42nd spot. The 43rd spot is used for the most recent past Cup champion NOT already in the field from being in the top-35 in owners points or one of the seven no top-35. If their is not past champ for the 43rd spot, it goes to the next fastest [8th fastest driver]
  • What happens if qualifying gets rained out?

If it is the first 5 races of the season, the previous season OWNERS points are used:

#1) - Previous season Owner Points [position 1-35]
#2) - Race winners from the previous and current season not already in the field
#3) - Past Nextel Cup Champions not in by 1 or 2
#4) - Current season Owner Points [Top 35][not in by rules 1-3]
#5) - Current season race attempts ties broken by current owners points standings [not in by rules 1-4]
After the 5th race of the season, the current season OWNERS points are used:
#1) - First 35 by current Owner Points
#2) - Last Years Cup Champ or the Event Champion if not already in the field
#3) - Car Owners whose team has won in the previous and current season not already in the field
#4) - Drivers who have won in the previous and current season not already in the field
#5) - Past Nextel Cup Champions not in by 1 thru 4
#6) - Qualifying Attempts with Owners points as the tie breaker
    #7) - Qualifying Order Position
(all above apply as long as the team was entered by the entry deadline - usually 7-13 days before the race)

  • Jayski's - 2007 Nextel Cup Race Results Page
  • How to Calculate Track Speeds: use the formula Speed = Distance divided by Time. Distance is Track Length, and Lap Time into Hours. Once hour is 3600 seconds, so the calculation for a 48 second lap at Daytona(2.5 miles) would be: Speed = 2.5 x (3600/48), = 2.5 x 75 = 187.500mph. For a 19 second lap at Bristol(.533 miles): Speed = .533 x (3600/19), = .533 x 189.474 = a speed of 100.990mph
  • How to break a tie during qualifying? (same speed/time) When drivers are tied for a starting spot during qualifying, it is broken by owners points standings(not drivers).

Kahne also won the Busch Series race at California on Saturday night. Kahne overcame a pit road speeding penalty to win the race. #41-Reed Sorenson was leading with 2 laps to go, trying to stretch the fuel mileage, but ran out of gas and finished 19th. #8-Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished 2nd, followed by #07-Bowyer [best career finish], #99-Edwards, #24-Gordon, #11-Hamlin, #17-Kenseth, #5-Busch, #20-Stewart and #88-Jarrett. Pole sitter #2-Kurt Busch lead the first 11 laps, fell back, got caught on pit road when a caution flew and finished 27th, down a lap. Kahne is now 30 points behind the 10th place driver, #31-Jeff Burton, who finished 16th. #99-Edwards and #16-Biffle are officially eliminated from the Chase, so it will be 11 drivers for the 10 spots in The Chase, unless there is a tie for 10th, then both drivers would get in. There were 10 leaders with 26 lead changes and 7 cautions for 29 laps.

  • Rumblings - California: How big would the margin of victory have been without the penalty? Kasey Kahne dominated tonight's SONY HD 500 at California Speedway, leading eight times for 130 laps, and pulled away to a 3.4 second victory in the Nextel Cup event.....in spite of getting caught for speeding on pit road! Reed Sorenson tried to steal it, but ran out of fuel on the penultimate lap and Kahne cruised by for his 5th win of the season (that's the most of any driver this year) and 6th of his career (he's now solo in 62nd place on the all-time win list). Win #12 for Ray Evernham gives Kasey a sweep of the weekend (he took the Busch event last night as well), and was worth $279,214 from the almost $6M in posted awards. By doing all he could do points wise, Kasey is now just 30 markers out of the "Chase" with one race left.
Dale Earnhardt Jr (2nd) had his best finish since he won at Richmond in May. Clint Bowyer (3rd) had his career-best finish tonight. His previous best was 4th at The Brickyard in August. Dale Jarrett (10th) had his best finish since he was 9th at Atlanta in March. Casey Mears (14th) had his best finish since he was 7th at Daytona in July. David Gilliland (32nd) tied his career-best finish tonight. He was also 32nd at Infineon in June. STREAKIN....Denny Hamlin has 7 Top-10's in a row. Tony Stewart has 5 Top-10's in the last 6 races. This Week's Elevator....UP: The Operator of the Week is tie. Dale Jarrett (+26) and Mark Martin (+26) share the honors followed by Carl Edwards (+20). DOWN: The Big Dropper was Brian Vickers (-39), followed by Kurt Busch (-26) and Ryan Newman (-21). This is BD #3 for Vickers this season.
Matt Kenseth re-assumes the points lead from Jimmie Johnson tonight for the first time since we left Phoenix in April. Matt's got a 9 point margin. There are a number of scenarios where we could have a tie for the 10th and final qualifier for the "Chase"....we've got only 11 drivers with a chance this year with one race to go. Dale Earnhardt Jr (9th to 6th) made the best move forward in the standings this week, while Jeff Burton (7th to 10th) and Brian Vickers (17th to 20th) fell the most spots. Tony Stewart, Mark Martin, and Jeff Burton will spend most of next week wanting to know where the #9 car is.(Stock Car Fans)(9-3-2006)

  • RACE/PIT NOTES: (as noted heard on TV or Radio)
---- with 2 laps to go, #41-Sorenson was going for the win with a 6 second lead, ran out of gas, had to pit and finished 19th, the last car on the lead lap.

See the qualifying results/starting lineup on the California Starting Grid/Qualifying Results page.(9-1-2006)
  • Ramblings - Qualifying Notes - California: Kurt Busch kept his qualifying success rolling today at California Speedway as he took the Bud Pole for the SONY HD 500 with a time of 39.016 sec (184.540 mph). This is the third top-spot for Busch in the last four races, his 5th of the season (he leads in that category now) and the 8th of his Nextel Cup career. Brian Vickers will join Busch on the front-row for the Sunday twilight affair.
Scott Riggs (4th) has his best starting spot since he had the pole at Lowe's Motor Speedway in May.
Martin Truex Jr. (5th) has his career-best starting spot this week. His previous best has been 8th (three times)....the most recent at New Hampshire in July.
Dale Earnhardt Jr (6th) has his best starting spot since he lined up 6th at Michigan in June.
Scott Wimmer (17th) has his best starting spot since he qualified 14th at Lowe's Motor Speedway last October.
David Gilliland (20th) has his career (albeit short) best starting spot this weekend. His previous best was 26th at Michigan two weeks ago.
Bill Elliott (23rd) has his best starting spot since he timed in 9th at Texas last October (only six races).
STREAKIN....Jeff Burton has 7 Top-10 starts in the last 8 races.
...Kurt Busch has 6 Top-10 starts in the last 7 races.
...Denny Hamlin has 5 Top-10 starts in the last 6 races.
Once again this weekend the race within the race will involve where the 5, 24, 11, 31, 20, 8, 6, and 9 car are. Expect lots of point updates (since we're just about down to the nitty-gritty) with Kasey Kahne the only logical contender to make the "Chase" (he's 90 points in arrears).(Stockcarfans.com)(9-1-2006)

The NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series moves West this week for Sunday’s running of the Auto Club 500 at California Speedway, and a town known for glitz and glamour will instead be marked by speed and sound. Celebrities and drivers will rub elbows in the Los Angeles market – Fontana, Calif. – as the ever-maturing California Speedway will undoubtedly once again provide some of the fastest racing on the circuit.

The track first started featuring NASCAR NEXTEL Cup racing in 1997 and as popularity grew, so did California Speedway’s need for another race. In 2004, the track was awarded a second race – the second one under the lights, a perfect setting for Hollywood magic.

I'll be breaking these down and posting my plays this evening...

Discussion is welcome..

:shake:

Definitely like the Roush guys this weekend...Biff, Edwards, Kenseth and McMurray.

Some matchups for the race I like:

Newman +135 vs. Truex

and

Biffle Even vs Junior (superbook.com)

These odds may go the other way but I'll take my chances now.

Looking forward to your analysis this weekend.

Alright...quick first thoughts here before I see any times tomorrow for practice..

First off, the Jan Vegas test is normally a good barameter of who's got their shit together for this type of track...Vegas is only 1.5, and even though Cali is 2 mile and considered a superspeedway rather than an intermediate, the test results translate well normally...Vegas has new banking now that really makes in similar to Texas, but I think these tests results will give you a barameter of who has some speed this weekend..u could also look at Michigan results, who's Fontana's sister track...

Jan '07 Vegas Test pages:

Qualifying Early Thoughts:

My Pole Faves/Value:

2: Obvious favorite here....sat pole both Fontana races last year...but didn't race particularly well...acc to his quotes, they may be workin on race trim a bunch more than the qualifying trim this year though...but the 2 car was a qualifying machine last year...Kurt's best result in four test sessions in Jan in Vegas was 10th fast though...so I don't think they may be looking at one lap speed...Overvalued IMO..

9: my choice for the pole...avg start in 6 Fontana races is 8.7...he had 1st and 3rd fastest laps in Vegas Test and is a 1.5 and 2 mile dominator...qualifying and race..

10: S Riggs...another pole sleeper...great speed last year in both Fontana qualies...avg start is 8.8 in 6 fontana starts, and most were in rides not nearly this quick...the Evernham guys were sick quick in that Test...but are missing crew chiefs and 3 engineers this week...only negative..

19: 1st quick in 2nd day at Vegas Test...he's paired vs Newman, who showed very little speed at that test and his 1.5 program was junk in the 2nd half of last year...major value for his matchup..

25: Mears is my sleeper for the week...Vickers sat outside pole for fall race at Fontana and had an avg start of 8 in 6 Fontana Starts..Mears was in the 12-15 range of the Vegas test and I wouldn't be surprised to see him step it up in speed and esp during the race....Hendrick has done very well at Fontana and he's a big sleeper..

11:...avg start of 6.5 in both races last year and should consistent top 10 starter speed in these tracks...would not fade him.

Race Early Thoughts:

My Faves:

First off...Roush, Evernham, and Hendrick are who you want here...Roush has been the 1.5 shit for 2 years and Kahne himself took their 1.5 program to a whole nother level..Gordon and Johnson have been sick good at Fontana and Kyle Busch has taken off too...as for individuals...

9: Obvious...Michigan and Fontana are sister tracks...both 2 mile superspeedways who are fast and banked...in 06, Kahne won the spring race in Mich and the fall race here...he finished 4th in the spring race at Fontana and fall race at Michigan...In short...it the four races at these D shaped tracks...AVG finish was 2.5...WOW...add in his Vegas tests and he's a big fave in my book...one negative: his crew chief, Kenny Francis is suspended this week and that's a variable I don't like..

17: From Nascar.com: "has been equally impressive during his career on the 2-mile tracks. Since winning the spring 2002 race at Michigan, he has finished outside the top 15 only twice in 17 starts on this type of track.
Kenseth proved he still knows the way to Victory Lane in this race last year when he held off a determined charge by Johnson. Kenseth added another victory at Michigan this past fall and then finished seventh in the return date to California last year, which gives him an average finish of 5.5 during the four 2-mile track races of 2006."...no reason for me to put in my own words as that says it all..outside the top 15 twice in five years is just sick...I will say that at the spring race he won here, he had the third best car...Biffle and Stewart had better cars but both blew up..

99: Here's my pick for the win and the guy I'm lookin to make money on this weekend...he's been a Fontana monster and basically nobody is talking about him here...he's started at Fontana 6 times and finished no worse than 5th...that's sick...avg finish of 4.4 at Fontana...he had top 10 speed at the Vegas test and is hungry...he's never won at this type of track but is beyond due..finished 3rd and 4th last year..

8: Nobody will talk about Jr this week and that will prolly equal some pretty good value..the chassis Jr is running, chassis 039, he ran 8 times in 2006...those resulted in 8 top 10s and 6 top 5's....that's some pretty sick stats...it also ran 2nd at Fontana in the fall...

20: Tony hauled the mail here in the spring and blew up w/ 60 to go...finished 7th in the fall...Tony was extremely fast in all FOUR test sessions at vegas and was fast in Mich too...won Texas in the fall as well...also hungry from 43rd place finish at Daytona after having the fastest car...only a fool would bet against him this week..

24/48: both have been good here and the 24 has been the cream of Fontana since it's conception...was even 2nd best car in the fall but couldn't make up for a pit mishap late in the race...still finished top 5..has three fontana wins and Johnson won his first race here and is a Cali boy..

A couple cars u'll hear about that's fade material IMO...

16: First off, Biffle has been the shit at this track and many like it for two years..Biffle won the spring race here in 05 and then led 170 laps last year before blowing up while leading w/ 30 to go...that's great...but it was in a chassis that no longer exists...that chassis won 8 races, incl Michigan, Fontana, 3 at Homestead and the tracks like this...he was in big crash in a tire test at Vegas in December though and destroyed his favorite car...he then tested a brand new car that was a sister car to that chassis in the Thunder test in Jan and lo and hehold blew a right front and messed up that car in day two of testing too...Biffle says they have one lap speed, so I wouldn't recommend a qualifying fade, but he's going to be head vs big boy matchups here in the race matchups and is going to be a good value fade w/ the unknowns of running a brand new chassis IMO..

I'm lookin for value and I think there's enough strong cars here that we can find where it is...

Going to lock in my qualifying matchups (one or two) and then wait on the race one's...

That's a good start in my thoughts..

Jump, I think that Edwards will have a good race. This is his type of track.

Tony will be hell on wheels for a top finish. But, he will have to keep a cool head, or he will dig himself a huge points hole.

The books think that Kahne is the man to beat for the race. It will be interesting to see the practice speeds, tomorrow.

Do you know of any other books that offer racing lines similar to Olympic? I haven't been able to find a decent replacement. VIP did have odds to win the Busch race, I'm hoping they have matchups for Saturday.

Good luck this weekend.

I'm not playing any of the matchups the Greek is offering this afternoon for qualifying...my strongest lean is the 19 over the 12, but it's a big chalky so I'm passing..

I am going to play the truck race 2night and will have those plays up this afternoon..

GL to anyone who plays qualifying..

Jump, I think that Edwards will have a good race. This is his type of track.

Yes, the 4.4 avg finish speaks for itself...

Chassis: RK-270 Edwards raced this car to wins at Atlanta, Texas and Pocono in 2005

Tony will be hell on wheels for a top finish. But, he will have to keep a cool head, or he will dig himself a huge points hole.

Good point on the cooler head...very important for him...he's also running a successful chassis that won three times during the chase..fuel mileage deal at Kansas..and dominated Texas and Atlanta..

The books think that Kahne is the man to beat for the race. It will be interesting to see the practice speeds, tomorrow.

Yup...w/ his history here last year and at Michigan..his testing times at Vegas...it's hard not to peg him the favorite....No crew chief is the only issue that is a negative (Johnson came 2nd here last year w/out Knaus though)

Do you know of any other books that offer racing lines similar to Olympic? I haven't been able to find a decent replacement. VIP did have odds to win the Busch race, I'm hoping they have matchups for Saturday.

Truck Race:

Played #50 Edwards OVER #21 Martin -110 (1 unit):

Martin was fastest in a rain shortened practice hence I think decent value for Carl here...

First truck race play of the season..

I do not sir...Olympic is the best choice out there...u may look into a prepaid Visa card from Walgreens as an option to funding them...a buddy of mine was told by a customer service rep from thegreek that you can fund your acct that way..

Thanks, Jump. I might have to try that. I miss the matchups on Trucks and Busch races. Watching a race is just not the same, when you have nothing riding on it.

Wouldn't the book know that I'm still a customer from the US? Or, do you think that they would not care?

Thanks. One more question: Is there another place to buy the prepaid visa cards?

I don't think we have Walgreens, out here in the woods. We do have Eckerd's and CVS drug stores. I've never noticed if they sell prepaid cards.

I'm really not sure there Dave....the customer service rep mentioned the Walgreens...seems other places shoulds sell them as well..

Watching some practice now, want to play the #9 in the top 3 but at 3/2, is there any value in that.

I am trying to learn about betting NASCAR because I love to watch it. I made three bets at Daytona but none hit. I bet two top finishing Dodge and Chevy and I bet you can guess which drivers I took in those cars...let's just say they were dominant and they bumped each other taking each of them out. And I took the #7 in the top three at 12/1.

Anyway, I enjoy reading your stuff JUMP...very informative, I might have some questions for you before race time, thanks

well 1st practice just got done but I do not take much from that. They are running at a time when they will not be racing. 530 tonight will be the true barometer of what we will see. Edwards will be good there tomorrow. he has the best ave finish there and it helps he is in a Roush vehicle. Biff and Kenseth will be there as well. Engine reliability will be huge as always for this is a long race. Just look at Biff last year. Dark horse is Mears. He always is good at these 2 milers and being in a Hendrick car, that helps. Tough to bet against Kahne but remember he doesn't have his CC so that could be a factor.
Jump, as for the Vegas test, you are right on the money. What happened there is a barometer for here. Just my $.02, avoid Kurt tomorrow and I am a huge fan. I am waiting to see how they do this weekend before I truly get an idea of what's happening. Back in Vegas, they had a decent test at best. They did work on long runs but they still don't have this figured out quite yet. I am looking at a top 15 bring a good day for them. Anything better, gravy for this fan.
Top three:
Edwards
Stewart
Biffle
Sleeper:
Mears.

With a win once here at once at Michigan, and two fourths in the other two races, he had an avg finish of 2.5 on the D shape 2 milers last year...so the value is right on the cusp...he hasn't shown a dominant car here yet though, and no crew chief as well...I lookin for a Ford or a Hendrick car to win today...

And I'll be around, so ask away.

I am with you on the Hendrick cars, I would like to hear your opinion on the #7, I believe Bowyer is going to have a good year. It is just a matter of time before he gets a win, and at 7.5:1 to finish in the top 3 I think this has some value

I am also looking at the #19 at 10:1 to finish in the top 3, My only concern is his starting spot (38), what do you think?

I use Bodog and am not sure if they are going to post any head-to-head matchups I hope they do, but won't hold my breath...Lastly, I think I am going to play the #24 to win at 10:1 no winners in this race from the pole or outside pole, maybe today is the day

Any comment or suggestions are welcome, thanks in advance...

Bro...I agree on the 2...I don't think he'll be a factor today and no that test was a disaster for both Penske cars....Kurt brought two cars and one was bad loose and the other was bad tight...they brought the loose car and it's still been lose...w/ sunny conditions, I think he'll fight that all day..

As for your top 3, it's highly possible...Tony has been consistently fast and he and Biff will be two of the better cars on the longer runs...

Mears is my sleeper as well...

Any comment or suggestions are welcome, thanks in advance...

the 07 car has been good here last year and has unloaded bad fast and stayed fast...Not sure how good he'll be on long runs, but I think he has a top 10 car...not sure on top 3 as there are a ton of fast pieces out there..

All 3 RCR cars have shown good speed and should do well today..

the 19 was a car I thought would qualify well and race pretty good (top 15), but he hasn't shown anything consistent...

I think the missing crew chiefs and engineers are hurting the 19/10 performance much more than the 9 at this point..the 9 has some great notes here to work off of and his program is just further ahead...and I think u're seeing the 19/10 struggle a bit and that has a little do w/ it..I can't recommend Elliott from what I've seen from him..

the bet on the 24 has some value..I don't care so much about the two poles stats...the 24 has been the guy at Cali since it started and obviosly has a fast car...just a matter of keeping up w/ the track..I think he's got a chance, but like a Roush Ford in the end..

I've been busier than hell this morning...but going to confirm a couple things and lock in my plays...

I'm lookin at 3 plays today...

Jump,
should be interesting day. As for the 2, they actually brought the sister chassis to todays race vs the 2 they used in Vegas. The one that was loose in the test is the one they are going to try in 2 weeks and its sister is on the car today. Again, they made major changes in HH so top 15 is a hope right now. I say:
Edwards
Stewart
Kenseth
Sleeper(Mears)
I backed off Biff a bit but he will be there as well. Temperature going to be like it was in HH so the 48 looked the best out there. All the cars fighting loose condition. Agreed about the evernham cars missing their CC's. I think that's a factor as well.

Thanks for the insight, I am going to look further into those Roush guys, 3 out of the top 5 in the race last night...WOW.

Yeah bro...Roush Ford's have historically been super strong at the intermediate's and also the SS at Fontana and Mich...

Kenseth, Edwards, and Biffle are just super strong here...

Alright...3 plays for me today...

One warning...try not to play any small time teams here or teams that use different engines or borrow engines(i.e M Martin)...engine problems are always prevalent at Fontana and that won't be any different today w/ the long race and also first race using unleaded fuel...you'll see guys blow up...

#24 Gordon OVER #8 Earnhardt Jr. +110 (1 unit)...hate to fade those chassis results, but major value w/ Gordon's track record here...

#17 Kenseth OVER #16 Biffle -130 (1 unit)...my plan was to play the 99 this weekend..but I'm getting almost the same vig vs the same guy (Biffle) and w/ Edwards compared to Kenseth, the 17 just looks better to me this weekend...I think the 17 and 99 both run well, but I like the matchup a little better w/ the 17...I think Biffle was struggle a bit on the very long runs and this place doesn't lend itself to short runs as the cars get spread out..

#5 Ky Busch OVER #31 Burton +120 (1 unit)...once again..major value here...yeah Burton has been fast in practice as have all the RCR cars, but I have history on my side...Hendrick has won 5 Fontana races adn Kyle has been good here...major value..

As for predictions...the 48 looks like the car to beat..he's matched against the 9, so I'm passing w/ Kasey's numbers at these D shaped ovals...

If I had to pick a top 5 it would be:
Johnson
Kenseth
Stewart
Kahne
Edwards

w/ the 24 and the 5 pushing as well...

GL today boys..

2-1 and +1.10 units...

5 vs 31 was close but no cigar....good weekend overall guys...and thanks for the input..

Off week next week and then we're to Vegas in two weeks...

Hope everyone made money..

Nice job this weekend, dead on with the Roush guys, all were strong at some point, minus the #26, but who knows.
And RCR what a showing as well as with the Hendrick stable and the #'s 24, 48, and 5...
I liked the one point about 60 to go the #17 crew chief said "looking good, 24 and the 48 are the only one guys catching ya." Had to laugh at that seeing as it wouldn't give me much comfort.
#9 is my guy and he had some troubles out there, but hope he can make a run at the cup this year
looking forward to the season...two exciting cup races thus far

Kasey will be fine....the unleaded fuel really threw some teams a curveball and I'm sure they're very relieved to have an off week to address it..

Good start to the season w/ some good racin..
