FIGHT NIGHT: MORENO VS ROYVAL 2

@ MEXICO CITY, MEXICO

Early Prelims:

  • 3/1.88 MUHAMMAD NAIMOV INSIDE DISTANCE -160
  • 3/1.97 Silva/Naimov Under 2½ -152
  • 2/5.20 Victor Altamirano +260
  • 3/1.36 ALTAMIRANO/DOS SANTOS) Over 2½ -221
  • 3/2.56 LUIS RODRIGUEZ -117
  • 3/2.11 Rodriguez/Bondar Over 2½ -142

  • Naimov is tough as nails and should easily handle the older foe. ITD & under
  • A couple prospects at 125 go next with dos Santos the clear favorite. He likes to go all out from the first bell and will be in danger of gassing if he don't get an early finish. Altamirano is a slick operator with a solid all around game. I'll give him a shot at generous odds.
  • More flyweights in the next bout, with Bondar making only his second appearance in a little over 2 years...plus he's 0-2 in UFC. Kind of surprised "Lazy Boy" is such a short favorite with a strong 12-1 mark over the last 5.5 years, even with this his UFC debut. I'm on Rodríguez, most likely by decision.

Do they ever do good cards after a big PPV?

This one is at least somewhat interesting
Yeah there's maybe 2 or 3 good scraps and a few prospects worth a look, but mostly lighter weights without big power for fireworks we like.

First shit decision of the night

Dos Santos wins a split decision with a 27-30 card against him

Robbed in Altamirano fight although it was close, no way live odds should have been 2100, then Rodriguez get finish too soon -SMH

  • Next up a couple well-matched LWs. Both guys are quite willing to bang, but neither has significant power. Ziam has a size advantage and may be a little more polished. Puelles will have the home crowd behind him and will likely play the long defensive game. Most likely this will be a striking affair that goes to the cards. Gimme the dog!
  • Chairez was in control when these 2 fought before, but the ref made a mistake in calling it early so it was ruled a no contest. I would expect more of the same as Lacerda is 0-4-1 in last 3 years and has never won in the UFC. Strangely we got a double weight miss for this one as Lacerda was 127 while Chairez was 131...don't really know what to read into that, although Lacera has previously battled making weight.
  • Although Mendonca came into the UFC a highly touted striker, he's been outclassed in his first 2 fights. He should be competitive tonight, but may not have enough versus the hometown Mexican.
  • Next a couple 135 lb finishers come to battle, Quinonez has seen 17 of his 22 fights finished(13 by him) and Barcelos has finished 5 of his 6 UFC wins...problem for him is he's lost 4 of L5. Both are well-rounded but of note: Quinonez trains in Mexico City where that 7300' elevation is no joke when you're not used to it. I'll back another upset, even though Raoni has more experience and is more gifted physically.

  • The main card starts with a great matchup. Manueal "El Loco" Torres has been a finishing machine, putting each of his last 5 opponents away in round 1 and with a 14-2 record he's only been past R1 once! However, this will be his UFC debut. Duncan has won 2 straight in the UFC using his grappling, mostly. He will need to avoid damage while striking with Torres and get the takedown asap. I do believe "El Loco' will find his button early with a highlight KO.
  • Jauregui will likely win the only chick fight tonight and get the finish, I'm going to pass due to the ridiculous odds. Hughes is a vet and can be troublesome.
  • BWs are up next with super-prospect Rosa Jr trying to get another win to add to his 2-1 UFC record. Turcios is also 2-1 in UFC with more experience overall. Should be a tougher test than some may think. However, Ricky's funky kicking heavy style may not be enough to keep Rosa off him and once it goes to the ground it will be Rosa's world for control and possible sub. Rosa and over
  • Next, Zellhuber's unique style of striking will be on display. He's a tall LW with good length and a knack for maintaining distance and punishing opponents when they try to get close. Prado will look to brawl and negate his 8" reach disadvantage tonight. Probably no finish, but Prado's face will look different after the fight.
  • Yair sustain a broken arm in their last fight so they are running it back to prove a definitive winner. Ortega has never been the same since the epic beat down Max put on him with his only win since then...over Yair in the injury stoppage. He's been in Mexico less than a week and is coming off an injury, so I don't believe his endurance at 7000 feet is going to be up to par. Yair is fast, more polished striker and most likely way more cardio. Plus, the whole house will be behind him, loving this spot.
  • In the main I'm not sold on Moreno even though he's proven to be championship caliber over time. He beat Royval but that was over 3.5 years ago. Since then he's fought Figueiredo 4 times(2-1-1) and is 1-1 vs others. Since Moreno, Royval has lost twice to the champ (Pantoja) but is 3-0 otherwise. Both fighters are very durable, and my call will be it goes late, so I'll back the over. I would lean Moreno but no value at 280.

Best of luck folks, I'm out.

I was able to manage another winning night even though I lost my biggest play(Yair) which turned out to be my only loss on the main card.
