Doing some short recaps

Goodbye to Romance College Football
Going in order from start time because that is what I feel like doing.

ULM's first drive of the game (after an INT) gained 43 yards, ULM gained 44 yards the rest of the entire game. UK outgained them 554-87 and because of -3 TO margin the Cats had to score with 1:00 left to get the 35pt margin. I'm sure Nebraska would like to have WanDale Robinson back.

Wisconsin had a 12-1 first down edge in the 1st H, yet were tied 0-0. For the game Wisconsin had a 42 to 18 time of possession edge, but 4 scoreless trips inside the PSU 25 yard line (including 3 inside the Penn St 10 yard line) doomed them (blk'd FG, fumble, INT, INT). FDs ended up being 29-11 and Total Yards were 359-297 for UW. PSU leading tackler Ellis Brooks ejected for targeting, will miss 1st H next week.

Tulane D opened with an INT and leads of 7-0 and 14-7. OU would score the next 30 points for a 37-14 halftime lead while Tulane gained just 36 yards on their final 5 drives of the 1st H. In the 2nd H, the OU O was ineffective (118 2nd H yards) and the D sloppy as Tulane would made a game of it. OU's K Gabe Brkic made 4 FGs, 3 beyond 50!

Rutgers only needed 78 yards of offense for their 26-7 halftime lead. Thanks to a safety, 57y KO return (FG), INT and 21y return to the T02 (TD), a fumbled Temple KO recovered at T28 (TD) and another fumble at the T22 (TD). TY at HT were just 135 to 127 slight edge for Rutgers. Temple scored a TD to open the 2nd H, but Rutgers throttled them from there, added a pick-six and yet another short field TD after a 45y punt return to the T17. Total yards for the game were 365-261 (4.6-4.1) while the final was 61-14! Temple QB Mathis was injured in the 3rd.

Stanford opened with back-to-back false start penalties, while Kansas St looked ready. A great INT by Stanford in the EZ kept K St from scoring, but after Stanford's second punt, K St did drive down for TD. Stanford O continued to sputter and K ST ripped a 59y TD run on 3rd and long to lead 14-0. Ineffective Stanford O continued and K St built a 24-0 lead with a near-pick six return factoring in. Both West and McKee played, West didn't play good. McKee was better but not good enough. K ST had a 200-39 rush yard edge and 344-233 TY.

Western Michigan tied 7-7 aided by a 15y personal foul penalty, but Michigan pulled away to lead 27-7 halftime and got up 47-7 before a late WM TD. Some big plays by Michigan, some by Ronnie Bell, unfortunately he left with injury (MRI pending).

Georgia State turned it over and slowly the game got out of hand. GState fumbled their opening possession which Army converted into a 7-0 lead. Army would muff a punt, which GState recovered, but a holding penalty was called on GState. Army muffed the second punt, but again Gstate was called for a penalty. Army did not fumble the third punt and would soon have a 21-0 lead before GState got on the board. Was 27-7 HT and GState was SOD 4th and 2 deep in own territory and Army blew it open from there...43-10 F. All told, Army began in GState territory following 2 turnovers and a SOD. They still finished with a 356-177 TY edge! Army was 3-of-3 4th down.

BC started slow (punted 2 of first 3 drives), but Colgate was no match. Colgate only advanced past the B49 once the entire game. BC had a 22y pick-six which was crucial for the spread and 2nd H total.

Holy Cross got their first FBS win in 19 years at UConn. While often tied in the 1st H, Holy Cross never trailed and ultimately won by 10. HC outgained them by 100y. UConn QB Zergiotis was 17 of 41 passing with 3 INTs, including back-to-back to end the game. UConn went 3-and-out on their first 3 drives to start the game. They ran for just 2.3 ypc. Holy Cross is 2x defending Patriot League champion.

Fresno State got off to a rough start. Haener was sacked/fumbled by Thibodeaux setting up Ducks at the F03 and then first play of the next Fresno possession Rivers fumbled giving Ducks the ball at F27 creating an early 14 pt deficit without making the Ducks O work for much. Fresno settled in, kicked 2 FGs to make it 14-6 game, HT was 21-13. Fresno tied then took lead on 22y FG...24-21. Haener fumbled running at F32 allowing Oregon to kick tying FG. Oregon QB Brown ran for 30y TD on 4th-and-2 for the game winning score. Fresno was SOD in their own territory to end the game. All told, Fresno fumbled 3x in their own territory leading to 17 Oregon points ('drives' of 3, 27, 25 yards). Fresno outgained them 373-358 (5.1-4.9). Thibodeaux did leave the game very early 1st Q, returned for one series then was in street clothes the rest of the game.

Extremely tough loss for Rice players +19-20. Arkansas went up 7-0, Rice missed FG, then made FG following a blk'd punt. Following another poor punt by Ark, Rice was in good position and would go on for a TD and the lead (aided by 2 Ark penalties) 10-7 Owls! Rice would extend to 17-7, however the rest of the 2nd H was not kind to the Owls. They were SOD at the A19 4th-and-1 for a critical play of the game and then threw INTs on 3 of their next 4 possessions with with ensuing runbacks set Ark up for a couple extremely short TD 'drives' including the final one with just :58 left to go up by 21 pts. Ark scored the games final 31 points

West Virginia and Maryland combined for 31 points in the 1st Q, and 38 points a few minutes into the 2nd Q (WV leading 21-17), the flow of game shifted. Maryland gained 192y in the 1st Q alone, but would only gain 110 in the 2nd and 3rd Qs. 21-20 HT WVU lead, in the 2nd H WVU would not get past the M25 the rest of the game while Maryland could not convert some WVU turnovers into many points (muffed WVU punt at W34 = missed FG, another WVU fumble = short UM FG). WVU turnovers also hurt their scoring chances (threw INT in EZ following long KO ret). WVU lost 4 turnovers, Maryland 0. Maryland did outgain them 496-325 (6.2-5.3). Terp WRs Demus and Jarrett combined 12-255-2TD. WVU KR Winston Wright had 217 yards on 5 returns including a 98yarder.

Iowa only outgained Indiana 303-233. Early in the game IU had yardage edge despite trailing 3-14! Iowa would get 30 and 55y pick-six returns in the game. The first one bounced off the IU WR's hands and facemask into the hands of Iowa DB. The second the DB read the entire way and broke on it with a full head of steam. IU threw 3 INTs (Iowa converted all TOs into 17 pts), Iowa lost 2 fumbles.

Cincinnati jumped out quick 21-0 and led 35-0 HT. MiaO did move into UC territory 3 of their first 4 drives and 4 of their 6 in the 1st H, but punted on two and were SOD on the other two. Even with that 118 of MiaO's 278 total yards came on their final 3 drives. AJ Mayer was a surprise starter, Brett Gabbert DNP. Ridder 20-25-295-4-1, 31y TD rushing.

Alabama - Miami doesn't seem as close as 44-13. Bama scored on their first 5 possessions of the game, but it was just 3 TDs and 2 FGs. 27-3 HT. Miami did have a 14p 74y drive stop on a QB dive at the goal line. Bama scored TDs on first two possessions of the 2nd H, then just a single FG on their final 4 drives of the game.

Marshall had their way with Navy. Wells threw 20-30-328-0-2 often to wide open WRs despite Navy mostly playing coverage and only rushing 3 or 4. Marshall had 11 plays of 15+ yards. Navy started Tai Lavatai for his first PT of career, but one of last year's QBs Xavier Arline got more time. Navy's O made mistakes, negative plays and turnovers - Mids were 1 of 5 on RZ scores. Marshall won 49-7, but only outgained them 464-398 (7.4-4.3). 398 yards and 7 points. Marshall D registered 9 sacks!

LaTech looked in trouble to start. Turning the ball over twice, Mississippi St jumped out to 14-0 lead. Then something strange happened, Miss St O started stalling out and LaTech got a couple big plays to tie. MSU never was able to restart the offense and lost 4 turnovers in the process, LT converting them into 10pts (pick-six and FG). All told LT scored 34 straight points leading 34-14 early 4th Q. Then Miss St got a 70y KO return that sparked the team. They quickly had their first TD as part of the biggest comeback in school history. LT went 3-and-out and Miss St used a long drive to score another TD mid-4th Q. LT quickly went 3-and-out again and a short punt put MSU at midfield. 5 plays later they had the lead with 4min left. LT started moving the ball again. They faced a 4th down at the M37 and after some deliberation, Holtz put his K out there for a 54y FG. But a false start pushed them back forcing a 4th-and-11 conversion! LT then ran the ball a couple times, losing yardage in the process. A 46y FG was deflected as time expired ending the upset bid. MSU had 435-369 yardage edge (6.6-6.0). LT QB Austin Kendall looked pretty good, before coming to LaTech reportedly he didn't know his name was still in the portal and was moving on with life outside of football before Skip Holtz contacted him.

La Tech was playing for that long FG and that will end the same way in an upset bid on the road 9/10 times. Awful to watch the last few play calls and really shows zero confidence in the QB to manage the situation.

Mizzou scored first, but then would punt 4 straight possessions. For the game Miz would actually only convert 1 of 11 3rd downs! In the 1st H Central Mich would tie, Miz went back up, CM tied again until Miz took a 17-14 lead at HT but CM kept it close in the 2nd H as well. CM would throw 2 INTs in Miz territory. Miz was SOD once in CM territory. CM actually outgained them 475-468 (5.5-6.9). Miz D had 9 sacks, but Sermon who started for CM was pretty good in his first action with the Chips. Badie ran for 203 for Tigers.

Montana State was playing in their first game since 2019, but had longtime North Dakota State and Wyoming assistant coach Brent Vigen as their new HC who was very familiar with not only Wyoming but Craig Bohl's coaching tenancies. MSU led 7-0 for much of the 1st H after converting an early INT into a TD. Wyoming took a 9-7 lead (xpt no good) until an MSU 53y FG put them up 10-9 early 4th Q. A 25y FG put WYO back on top 12-10 under 5min left. Some big plays through the air led to MSU going back up 16-12 with 2min left. WYO struggled on O much of the day, yet moved down the field quickly scoring a 21y TD pass with :47 left 19-16. Controversy would follow. In the final seconds of the game, MSU player dove for a first down at the W40, which MSU players assumed was going to stop the clock, they could spike the ball and attempt a game-tying FG. The refs ruled he was short and kept the clock running. MSU had been docked 10 seconds earlier in the drive for a player injury with the team having no timeouts. WYO only outgained them 347-321 (5.4-5.0).

By all accounts, Iowa State had little things here or there preventing their offense from getting rhythm and maintaing drives. The defense did their part with just a couple exceptions. Two of Northern Iowa's biggest plays were the result of broken tackles, a near sack and a 37y gain then a near tackle and a 52y UNI TD. What should've been a sack and a 5y gain instead resulted in a 7-0 UNI lead. ISU would outscore them 16-3 the rest of the game. Two of ISU's FGs were kicked from inside the 20 (one from the 4 yard line). ISU outgained them 335-275 (5.6-4.6).

ULL kicked FG to lead 3-0, but Texas would score the next 21 of the next 24 pts. Only two of ULL's five 1st H drives reached UT territory. UT had a 435-358 yard edge (6.4-5.2). Of note, UT was 10-of-15 3rd down conversions, ULL just 3-of-13.

USC was held to just 13 points for 3 quarters vs San Jose. USC O stalled in the RZ, kicking FGs on 3 of 4 trips. Starkel threw 2 INTs, one led to a short field TD for USC in 1st H and the other was a 4th Q pick-six. With that pick-six, USC scored 17 4th Q points. In the 30-7 win, USC only outgained them 416-376 (5.9-5.8). USC ran 34x and passed 36x. San Jose's offense was challenged by USC D throughout the night. USC S, two-time captain, Isaiah Pola-Mao DNP.

Houston got off to a hot start and finished with a flop. UH opened with a 16p 75y 8-1/2 minute drive for TD (two 4th down conversions) and then onside kicked! Leading to another TD drive and a 14-0 lead before Texas Tech O stepped on the field. UH's 7 possessions in the 2nd H led to 4 punts and 3 turnovers....just 53 yards of offense. For the game Tune threw 4 INTs, one was a pick-six for TT D. Tech outgained them 376-251.

Auburn led 37-0 at HT. In the 2nd H, backup Zip QB DJ Irons completed a surprising 13-of-13 for 129y with a 4th Q TD. Auburn had 613-188 (10.4-3.0) yardage edge, only faced 3rd down 6x all night (converted 4) and the D got 7 sacks. Nix was 20-22-275-3-0, 32y rushing.

Nicholls led 7-0, Memphis scored the next 32. Seth Henigan was Memphis' first true freshman to start a season opener. Memphis outgained them 587-299 including 322 rushing.

Ohio missed a 50y FG then Syracuse went on for a 7-0 lead. OU mishandled the KO resulting in their drive beginning at the 1 yardline. Cuse would get a safety..9-0. A long OU drive saw them have a 1st and goal at the 4, but would only lead to a FG. Syracuse drove for a 1st down at the O10, but also had to settle for a FG...12-3. OU again drove into the RZ, but again could only produce 3 pts...12-6 HT. Mid 3rd Q Cuse had a 1st and goal at the O6, but as the theme goes, would have to settle for a FG...15-6. OU would be SOD at the S27 and Cuse got some chunk plays and soon a 22-6 lead. OU had 1st and goal at the 9, but you guessed it, would have to kick FG...22-9. Cuse added a TD and OU threw INT on 1st down in the EZ for touchback. After Cuse ran out the clock. The teams combined for 5 FGs on 8 RZ trips, many of which were from inside the 10. Despite winning 29-9, Cuse only outgained them 383-346 (6.2-5.5). Orange was an efficient 8-of-12 3rd down conversions, OU was 42%. RB Sean Tucker ran for career high 181y. Tucker and QB Devito averaged over 7ypc on the ground. Devito only passed for 92 yards. Shrader hardly played.

Shane Illingworth started for Oklahoma State. OSU would lead 20-0 with one possession being a short field after a fumble, but OSU O got worse as the game wore on. Illingworth completed 65% passes in the 1st H and just 41% in the 2nd H. OSU only crossed midfield twice in the 2nd H! Meanwhile Missouri State had to settle for 4 FG attempts, 3 of which they made, 2 of the 3 coming from inside the red zone. With the game 23-9, Missouri St would score a TD (aided by roughing passer on 3rd down incompletion) with just 3min left to make it 23-16. OSU unbelievably fumbled the ensuing KO setting Missouri St up at the O16! But a run and 3 straight incompletions ended turned the ball over on downs. Missouri St would force a punt, and got the ball back with 1:34 left. They made it as far as the O26 before a sack on 4th down ended the game. Petrino said he would’ve gone for 2 had they scored a TD. Okla State only outgained them 369-336 (5.4-4.0) but Missouri State outrushed them 102-54 (2.8-1.9)! OSU D got 5 sacks.

In a complete mismatch, Eastern Illinois did not cross midfield until the 3rd Q. As such, South Carolina enjoyed terrific field position throughout and had TD drives of 27y, 43y, 38y and 52y in the 1st H. They added a 61y pick-six for good measure in the 4th Q. South Carolina expects to have RB Kevin Harris and QB Luke Doty available for next game along with S RJ Roderick who was suspended.

Baylor proved to be very tough on D, but not so threatening on O. Bears harassed the Texas St QB McBride often, McBride’s elusiveness was the only thing that gave Texas State any kind of chance on offense. Baylor limited their ground game to just 79 yards. After fumbling at the T20 on their first drive, Baylor opened the scoring on D with a 20y pick-six. TxSt went for a 4th-and-1 and later was helped by a roughing the punter penalty on their way to a FG. After a Baylor punt, TxSt drove for a TD and the lead! 10-7! Baylor drove for TD and led 14-10 HT. Baylor extended the lead 24-10 before TxSt managed a FG entering the 4th Q. TxSt threw INT near midfield but their D forced a FG from the T09...27-13. TxSt threw another deep INT but Baylor was SOD a the T35. Aided by a rouhing the passer on a 3rd down incompletion and a D PI, TxSt drove for a TD to make it 27-20 1:19 left. TxSt used 2 timeouts and forced a punt, getting ball back with just :15 left where TxSt was called for holding in the EZ resulting in a game ending safety...29-20F. Baylor outgained them 386-235 (5.6-3.5). Each team was a similar 5-of-13 5-of-14 3rd down rate. Baylor had 2 100y rushers.

James Blackman started for Arkansas State and was shaky early. Central Arkansas actually led 7-6 HT. In the 2nd H Arkansas State went with last year’s co-starter Layne Hatcher who lit up the UCA D with 4 TD passes and a 40-21 blowout win. Hatcher went 12-of-12 for 150y with those 4 TDs. UCA converted just 1 of 12 3rd downs.

Oregon St led 7-0 but Purdue scored the next 16 points. Oregon State stopped a fake FG near the goal line, but were later SOD near midfield. Ore St connected on a 41y pass and then a short TD run to make cut into the lead. PU led 16-14. Later in the 4th Ore St was again SOD at their own 37 which Boilers converted into a TD with 5min left 23-14. OreSt hit a 45y TD pass to make it a 2 pt game 3min left. On 3rd and 2 Pur hit a 50y TD pass to ice the game. 30-21.

Middle Tennessee St returned a punt 70y to open the scoring, but Monmouth tied it at 7. After that it was a rout, although while MTSU scored 50 pts, they had just 337 TY (5.6). They had 2 non-offensive TDs and 3 short TD drives after turnovers and SOD.

SMU QB Tanner Mordecai broke the school TD pass record with 7....he broke the record in the 2nd Q! He ended the day 24-30-317

Toledo returned 2 blk’d punts for TD in the 1st H.

North Texas ran for 345y, with DeAndre Torrey racking up 244 and 3 TDs. New starting QB Jace Ruder was just 10-21-131-1-2.

Virginia shut out their former head coaches team, beating William & Mary 43-0.

TCU led 35-0 HT and the coaches agreed to play 12 minute quarters in the 2nd H. They held Duquense to just 6 first downs.

Georgia Tech outgained Northern Illinois 429-301 running 78 plays to NIU’s 59. In the 1st H, GT was SOD at the N39, missed 2 FGs and fumbled at the N41. NIU took eash of their possessions after the missed FGs for TDs to lead 14-0! QB Sims was injured on the fumble at the N41 and did not return. Fr QB Jordan Yates came in and led GT on a 17p 97y TD drive where they converted four 3rd downs just before HT. In the 3rd Q GT nearly had a tying TD on 4th down, but replay ruled the receiver was OOB. Early 4th Q GT did tie after NIU fumbled at their own 25. With under 3min left NIU would go on to drive for TD and the go-ahead 2pt conversion! GT took over with just :31 left, they got in position to attempt a 60y FG which was blk’d.

Wait was TCU/Duquesne graded as no contest? Pretty sure book rules require 55 minutes to be played

I wondered the same thing. Might not have been a game a lot of people had action on so not really talked about

Florida led 14-0 HT and built 28-0 lead into the 4th Q. They were SOD at the FAU02. Gator offense wasn’t sharp through the air. Emory Jones threw 2 INTs and passed for just 4 yards per attempt. Jones added 74y rushing. They also played Fr QB Anthony Richardson who completed just 3 of 8, but led the team in rushing 160y on just 7 attempts! Florida DL was a problem for FAU, N’Kosi Perry was under near constant pressure, 6 sacks and 8 more hurries. FAU was able to get into UF territory on their first 4 drives, but would punt 2x and SOD 2x. There was a stretch in the 2nd H were FAU had just 34y on 4 possessions. But on their final 3 drives of the game they gained 202 yards and scored 2 TDs! Florida ended the game at the FAU27.

UTSA led 14-0. 1st Q yards were 129-35 for UTSA. ILL got on the board, but UTSA added a FG...17-7, would be 20-14 HT. Teams traded FGs...23-17. The 4th Q would see a good amount of scoring. ILL made their second 50+y FG, then they traded TDs...30-27. UTSA would run the ball on 9 of their 10 plays going 75y for another TD under 5min left. ILL kicked a FG and they kicked off deep with 1:55 left. They forced a 3-and-out using all timeouts and got the ball back with 1:31. ILL got down to the UTSA15, but were called for OPI and their final 2 passes were incomplete. UTSA oustained them 497-412 with 217-146 RY edge.

East Tennessee State got their first win vs FBS since 1987 in defeating Vanderbilt. Vandy went up 3-0 on their third possession of the game. ETSU would score the next 10 and also added a FG out of HT to lead 13-3. ETSU then added a fumble return TD and had a 99y pick-six but ETSU players were called for unsportsman-like conduct penalty on the return so they brought the ball out to the V19 where they would add a FG in the 23-3 win. Total yards were 321-314 for the ‘Dores (4.3-5.3). Vandy lost 3 turnovers.

Washington suffered their worst loss since 1985 losing to Oregon State as a 37 point favorite. Although, some might think that losing to an FCS school, even a good one, ranks as a worse loss. 4 years ago Washington beat Montana 63-7. This Montana team controlled the line of scrimmage – they had 7 TFLs in the 1st H. Montana outrushed them 127-65 (3.7-2.4). Both QBs struggled, but Montana QB did something Dylan Morris couldn’t, play a good 2nd H. Montana QB was 2-of-10 passing in the 1st H, in the 2nd H he passed 10-for-13 and led the Griz to 10 2nd H pts, while Morris threw 3 INTs and was sacked 3x. UW opened with a TD and never scored again. TY were 291-232 (4.0-4.1) for UW.

Texas A&M led just 10-3 in the 2nd H! They got an 85y pick-six return and then a 63y TD run to open it up and would lead 34-3 early 4th Q. With the game 41-10 Kent State had two opportunities to cover the spread, but missed short FGs on their final two drives of the game, the final one as time expired. While A&M had a 595-336 TY edge (7.8-4.5), the rushing yards were closer 303-226 (7.2-5.0). First time starting Aggie QB Haynes King threw 3 INTs (at the K05, K34 and K10 yard lines). A&M was also SOD at the K29.

There are 7 more games from Saturday I may or may not get to.

For years in the 1990s and early 2000s I loved the front page of the power sweep newsletter. It was the only worthwhile thing about that sheet. When they stopped doing them I started doing some. More info but I use some of that same style and abbreviations.

Rice was a huge kick in the nuts for me, and why the hell didn’t ark simply take a knee after they got a 1st down inside the 5 with 50 seconds left? I swear anytime I’m on the fav and need that score the Mfers take a knee!!!

Southern Miss' opened the scoring, their only score of the game, which was kept alive by a targeting call on a 4th down play that would've been short. USM O did not show any life again until the 3rd Q. South Alabama tied and then got a short field TD following a fumble recovery 14-7 HT. South Bama built a 24-7 lead when USM was SOD at the SB05 and fumbled at the SB07 on back-to-back drives. Of concern, South Bama's final 5 drives of the game netted just 7 yards! South Bama added a pick-six to cap the scoring. South Bama only outgained them 300-258 (5.4-3.5) despite the 31-7 margin of victory. Both teams equally struggled on 3rd down combining for just 5-of-27. USM really struggled throwing the ball, Jake Bentley was pretty decent in his debut for USA.

UCLA outgained LSU 210-48 rushing! 4.5-2.0 ypc. Zach Charbonnet led with 117y on just 11 carries and Brittan Brown had 96y on 17 attempts. LSU scored first, but it was UCLA who would lead a close game throughout the first 3 quarters of the game, leading 14-10 HT they got up 21-10, but LSU scored to keep it a 1 score game. UCLA would score on 4 straight possessions in the 2nd H, one a short field following an INT and extended their lead to 38-20 in the 4th Q. Max Johnson attempted 46 passes, completing 56% with a 7 ypa. LSU ran the ball just 23x not counting sacks. DTR completed a similar percentage of passes, but needed just 16 attempts to yield a 16.25 ypa! UCLA ball carriers and receivers broke tackles in the open field. The game was scoreless for the 1st Q, then they combined to score 65 pts over the rest of the game. LSU did kick two FGs from inside the RZ (7 and 15 yard lines). TY ended being 470-379 for Bruins (7.5-5.3)

UTEP is 2-0 for the first time since 2005 even though the wins were just vs New Mexico State and Bethune Cookman. Penalties were again a major problem for the Miners. After being flagged 12 for 140 yards week 0, they were again called for 12 penalties 113y this week. BC barely crossed midfield in the 1st H yet UTEP could not do much on offense. A punt was muffed and recovered by UTEP at the BC10 although it appeared to bounce off the UTEP player's helmet first, it was not stopped for review. UTEP could only gain 5 yards and kicked a FG to lead 3-0. They did score a TD with under 1min in the 1st half, but had to do so on 4th down from the BC02. 10-0 HT. While UTEP got their O going in the 2nd H, suddenly they could not stop BC! A UTEP fumble deep in their own territory all but handed BC their first TD. UTEP would score on 4 straight 2nd H possessions, but BC would score TDs on 4 of their 5 possessions as well. UTEP did outgain them 472-333, but BC had a 7.1-6.4 ypp advantage. Hankins DNP for UTEP, but Miners still had two 100y rushers. UTEP avg'd 5.7 ypc rushing, but BC had a 4.7 average.

Here are the late kicks to round it out

BYU and Arizona combined for 6 punts in the 1st Q even though BYU did move it better. In the 2nd Q BYU converted a 4th down on their way to a 6-0 lead (bad hold xpt no good). Zona drove it down to the B14, and after going for and getting a 4th-and-1 at their own 24 in the 1st Q , this time on 4th-and-1, Zona opted for a FG, which they missed. BYU connected on a 67y TD to go up 14-0 (2pt good). Zona again got into the RZ, this time made a 28y FG. 14-3 HT. In the 1st H BYU rushed for 78y, Zona 40y. The plays in the 2nd Q for both teams were predominantly through the air. Hall scrambled for 39 yards as part of a TD drive to put BYU up 21-3 mid 3rd Q. Zona got as far as the B26, but a sack then delay of game pushed them back and they punted downing the ball at the B01. Two plays later Zona D got TFL for safety...21-5. They started in BYU territory following the KO and 3 plays later it was 21-13. BYU goes 3-and-out and Zona drove the ball as far as the B09, but following a sack were forced into a 44y FG which they missed (second missed FG of the day). Mid 4th Q BYU added a 40y FG...24-13. Zona threw a deep pass INT in the EZ. Following punt, Zona drove to the B19 and kicked a 37y FG with :42 left. BYU killed the clock after recovering the onside kick. Arizona had a 27-18 FD edge and 426-368 TY (5.1-5.8). BYU got 2 TDs on their 2 RZ trips, Arizona got 0 TDs on their 4 RZ trips (2 FGs). BYU’s Pau’u caught 8-126-2TD, Zona’s Berryhill caught 12-102.

Cal went 63 and 72 yards on their opening drives to start with 14-0 lead. Cal would go 3-and-out on their next 3 drives of the 1st H and first drive of the 2nd H. Nevada got on the board with a 44y FG then hit Duobs on a 43y TD pass and was also able to add a 35y FG as time expired in the half to make it a 14-13 game. Opening drive of the 3rd Q with a couple chunk plays Nevada took a 19-14 lead (2pt no good). Nevada scored for a 4th straight possession when they hit a 49y FG...22-14. They missed another long FG on their next possession. Cal finally got their O restarted moving it down with a FD at the N13 but would have to settle for a 24y FG. 22-17 early 4th Q. Cal D got a deep ball INT at the C01 yard line and was able to drive the ball all the way down to the N09 but was sacked on 3rd down and they missed a 40y FG. Cal forced a punt to get ball back, but threw INT on their first play. Cal used all 3 timeouts and had one final chance with 1:55 left, but could not do anything and were SOD at own 25. UNR had 373-330 (5.7-5.1) TY edge, Cal outrushed them 153-61 (5.7-2.3)(Cal had 38, 20 and 15 yard runs to boost ypc). Teams were a similar 6-of-16 / 6-of-14 3rd down. Strong 22-39-312-2-1, Garbers 25-38-177-1-1

Jarrett Guarantano started for Washington State. He was the only QB to play the first 4 drives until he was sacked in the EZ, injured and did not return. He only led WSt to 3 pts. Utah State meanwhile threw a 45y pass that was originally ruled a TD, but replay said Thompkins was down at the W01. USU would suffer back-to-back false start penalties and then a third false start ultimately lead to a 23y FG. de Laura came in for WSt he drove them down to the RZ, but had to settle for a FGA which was missed. USU threw INT, but they forced another WSt FG from the RZ, this one good and WST took a 6-5 lead late 2nd Q. USU converted a 4th down on their way to a 39y FG to retake a 8-6 lead. Borghi ripped a 64y TD and USU kicked a 28y FG...13-11 Cougs lead. WSt drove for TD 20-11 and their next possesion USU was called for two 15y penalties (one negated an INT), WSt got down to the USU02 threatening to create some distance, but had to settle for 27y FG...23-11 early 4th Q. USU appeared content to just hang in the close game, ran the ball 8 of the next 9 plays with no urgency. After converting two 3rd downs on the ground, they passed for a 3rd and 9 and were able to take that possession for TD 6min left...23-18. WSt was sacked going 3-and-out and USU got the ball back at their own 22 3min left. USU very calmly and methodically moved the ball, milking clock to make sure they would leave little to no time left for WSt if they were to score. USU converted a key 4th-and-3. Later WSt was called for D PI which put the ball at the W07 and next play USU took the lead with just :13 left in the game 26-23 (2pt good). WSt tried the pitchy-pitchy-woo-woo play. USU outgained them 441-360 (5.4-5.9) and ran for 222 (4.8) to WSt’s 149 (5.7). USU kicked two FGs from the RZ and got 2 TDs. WSt only got one TD on their 5 RZ trips (3 FGs and a miss). Bonner led the game winning TD drive and went 17-24-143-1-1. Peasley played a good bit as well 6-12-76-0-0 while adding 43 rushing yards. de Laura 12-22-155-1-0,42y rushing - Guarantano 8-13-56-0-0. Borghi 11-86-TD (long of 64).

Surprisingly New Mexico State would lead 10-0 HT and for the game held a 374-339 TY edge (4.6-5.6)! San Diego State didn't move the bell well or often in the 1st H, but did fumble at the NMSt10 while NMSt's scoring drives were 10p 75y and 12p 90y! SDSt only had 70 total yards 1st H! SDSt D dominated in the 2nd H, they got 3 INTs on the first 5 Aggie possessions, one being a pick-six. SDSt QB Brookshire was just 6-19-76-0-1 passing while adding just 17y rushing. Greg Bell 21-161-TD. NMSt QB Johnson 34-56-326-1-3 (sacked 5x).

Hawaii started hot racking up 246y and 12 FD with 28 pts in the 1st Q alone! But at the end of the day Hawaii allowed 477y to Portland St in the 49-35 win. It was 35-7 HT. At the end of the 3rd Q Portland St scored a TD to make it 42-21, then UH mishandled the ensuing KO which Portland St recovered in the EZ for a TD...42-28. Each team scored a TD in the 4th Q. UH did outgain them 573-477 (7.8-6.4).

Rice was a huge kick in the nuts for me, and why the hell didn’t ark simply take a knee after they got a 1st down inside the 5 with 50 seconds left? I swear anytime I’m on the fav and need that score the Mfers take a knee!!!
To cover for the boosters - I was on Rice too

oh I get it, it just kinda rare we see that last minute of the game. Sparty did it to NW over the weekend also, In a game they were blowing ats away,, of course that fucjed nw 2nd half, lol.

guess it shouldn’t shock me any, rice seems to always find a way to screw up a good bet! I remember one last year where they dominated game but had 4-5 red zone trips where they came away w nothing! Fuckinh team starting to annoy me!!

Kentucky did it too. Scored in final minute, actually threw into the EZ on their second to last play from like the 4. Then they ran it in.

I think Florida was half-trying to score as well. They weren't trying to avoid it. Then they got to 4th down and Mullen let the final 15 seconds or something run off. It's a real bad look to score on a 4th down with clock running. I was thankful he called em off

Ole miss wasn't trying to avoid a score until the last play.

Corral was set to throw a bomb at one point under 2:30 left.

man. I know I don’t bet a ton of favs and sure feels like I always get stuck with one in same spot these schools were this weekend and fuckers always take a knee!! I’m thinking they were probably shorter numbers tho and the game was still close so could be they were taking a knee to make sure they win more so than being good sports!

Liam Coen was giving the 2nd teamers as many reps as he could and not taking the foot off the pedal may have won himself a bit more love from the players in the locker room. We'll see if this pays some dividends down the road....

After reading that writeup on Washington, I'm somewhat surprised they're only +7 at the Big House this Sat.

Yeah it was bad. And generally the outlook on them is pessimistic, which is understandable considering who they lost to and how. A 6 pt move week-to-week is a pretty big adjustment. Think Michigan was -1 preseason.

What's funny is preseason PAC pundits had Washington about 3 on average for final finish in the conference, ahead of ASU and Utah...and UCLA!

Those were a sample of maybe 12 geeks I saw, still nuts to me that Utes averaged 5 and UCLA 6

Well, I think the assumption was, my assumption atleast was that Washington played well last year and looked to be in the mold of a team like traditional Utah, run the ball, use TEs occasionally pop a big play to the WR and smother on D. While their QB didn't have a rock solid resume, his body of work last year didn't put up warning signs either. Their OL was supposed to be the strongest part of their O and they got whipped by Montana. Some things you just can't see coming. I thought UW had a strong shot at North Title and possible League title. Sounds dumb now sure, but a month ago nobody thought UW was weak. Some questions, yes. But still a contender. One bad loss to a team nobody respects much changes a lot.

yea pretty sure that what I saw on the look ahead. I’ve read quite a bit that udub oline might be one the best in the country, that sure doesn’t line up with what happened week 1!! 23 rushing attempts for only 89 yards (not counting the 4 runs credited to qb for -24 yards!)!!!

I’ve already mentioned this but if this was the nfl it be a prime spot to bet udub here. Gotta believe the Montana game was a aberration dont we? Can’t throw away everything we thought of a team cause one bad showing week 1! If ya made me play it I’d take the points but I’m much more interested in the under.
