Does Bowl Experience Matter?

s--k

Goodbye to Romance College Football
The topic came up about bowl experience vs inexperience.

I used the 2017 Phil Steele book to quickly leaf through the pages on bowl history for each team. If there was a 2 year, 3 year or 4+ year gap in bowl appearances I took note and calculated the results. I did not try to figure out or account for the head coach's bowl experience or the opponent's bowl experience. Just the team that has missed and how they did next time they got there.

Teams that had a 2 year bowl gap = ATS 13-11, SU 9-15

Teams that had a 3 year bowl gap = ATS 6-6, SU 6-6

Teams that had a 4+ year bowl gap = ATS 25-19, SU 22-22

I think teams who lost a Bowl game the season prior will look for redemption. It just has to align with the right team.

I think align is a key word, finding the components that line up for the strongest angle(s).

Some coaches care more. See Utah.

There are obviously countless variables, but I have to think coaching is one of the most important. Having to get your team to prepare after a few weeks off, and then having them out of school during bowl prep. More like a big opening weekend game than anything else really. Wonder if there's any correlation between how schools perform in game 1 and a bowl game? I'm guessing there are coaches that have kind of figured it out and some who haven't
