While it should be noted that BC's yardage advantage was mostly due to a 66 yard pass play, the important factor was Duke going 3 for 3 in field goal kicking including a 53 yarder while Boston College went 0 for 1.

Duke wins again while losing the box score. Legendary team in this respect the last bunch of years.

A few our guy wrote up in his weekly "Misleading Box Score" post that I thought were interesting:

This first one clowncar posted the box score:

Pittsburgh 17, Virginia Tech 13
Pittsburgh was much more dominant than that final score makes it sound. The Panthers won total yardage 276-100, and yards-per-play 4.5 to 1.9. Amazingly, Virginia Tech had an 83 yard TD drive…but then virtually nothing else on offense besides that. Normally only 100 total yards gets you a goose-egg or a field goal on the full-game scoreboard. Pittsburgh also won the turnover category 3-1. So it took some kind of special limbo to only win by four points.


I've only seen Va Tech play twice this year, the Ohio State game and the Purdue game, and they looked pretty good for the first half against Ohio State and against Purdue, but based on their last two games they are not a very good football team. How bad is this team?

Auburn 35, San Jose State 21
The Auburn Tigers continue to amaze. After looking awful in league action and playing a dead heat at home vs. Jacksonville State (as about 40-point favorites), Auburn played a statistical dead heat with San Jose State as 21-point favorites. They needed a 4-0 turnover advantage to win by 14! San Jose State won total yardage 406-342. Auburn barely won YPP 5.9 to 5.7. The big dog visitor had three long TD drives to just two for the heavily favored hosts. It’s quite a challenge to pin down exactly how bad Auburn is this season because they continue to perform at a level so far below what’s expected for this program or, really anyone in the SEC.


Arkansas 28, Tennessee 24
The Hogs were more impressive than the final score makes it sound…particularly considering it came on the heels of that heartbreaking loss to Texas A&M in overtime the prior week. Tennessee returned the game’s opening kickoff for a touchdown. Arkansas would win total yardage 494-365 (almost 500 total yards!), and yards-per-play 6.7 to 5.2. They had TD drives of 75, 80, and 80, compared to just one long TD drive for the hosts. If not for the kick return score for UT…this would have been a double digit straight up victory in a gut-check spot for the visitor. Great effort.

Should still be noted that Iowa did miss on a 4th and 2 from the Wisky 8 and later missed a FG from the 9. Then Iowa O hibernated for the entire 2nd half. But they conceivably could've had 6-10 more pts on their total.

Yeah, it's amazing what can happen when you have a team (coach) which does 90% of the little things right in every game. Look at the past 3-4 years of Virginia boxes, and you'll see that the opposite is also true. Thanks, as always, for this thread. I follow this nonsense pretty closely, but there's always something in this thread that amazes me (VPI getting 83% of its yardage on one drive as a home favorite is pretty freaking astounding).
