  • Past Champions Limited To 6 Provisional Berths in Cup: NASCAR announced an update to the past champion’s provisional rule in the Nextel Cup Series for 2007. Beginning this season, a past champion’s provisional may be used by an eligible driver a maximum of six times over the course of the season. In addition, a team with a past champion eligible driver may only use this provisional a maximum of six times during a season. Previously, there was no limit on usage of the past champion’s provisional over the course of the 36-race season. The provisional gives the eligible driver the 43rd and final starting position in the race field. "As NASCAR seeks to place more emphasis on competition, we have decided the time is right to limit the number of provisionals allowed,” said NASCAR Vice President of Competition Robin Pemberton. “We believe this revision brings the provisional policy in line with the continued growth of the sport.”(NASCAR PR)
This is only for a team/driver OUTSIDE the top-35 in owners points, drivers whose team is in the top-35 in owners points, would already be guaranteed in the field and not need the Past Champions Provisional.(1-31-2007)
  • Qualifying Procedure for the Gatorade Duel/Daytona 500:

Budweiser Pole Day: This “locks in” the first two positions – the front row – for the Daytona 500. It also establishes the starting orders for the Gatorade Duel at Daytona, which are two 150-mile qualifying races for the Daytona 500.

The fastest car earns the pole for the Daytona 500 AND the pole for the first Gatorade Duel race.

The second-fastest car earns the outside pole for the Daytona 500 AND the pole for the second Gatorade Duel race.

The Gatorade Duel at Daytona: These two 150-mile qualifying races set positions 3-39 for the Daytona 500.

A combined total of 66 cars will be allowed into the two Gatorade Duel races.

Cars must compete in one of the Gatorade Duel races, in order to race in the Daytona 500.

Odd-number finishers in the final 2006 car owner point standings (1st, 3rd, 5th, etc.) are in the first Gatorade Duel race.

Even-number finishers in the final 2006 car owner point standings (2nd, 4th, 6th, etc.) are in the second Gatorade Duel race.

Additional qualified cars that weren’t in the final 2006 top 35 are alternated between the two Gatorade Duel fields using an odd-even format.

    Setting the Daytona 500 field:
Cars that finished in the top 35 in the 2006 car owner point standings automatically make the Daytona 500 field.
The top two starting positions are determined by Budweiser Pole Day qualifying speeds.
Positions 3-39 are determined by finishing orders in the Gatorade Duel races.
The final four spots in the 43-car field will be based on Budweiser Pole Day qualifying speeds of cars that have not already earned a starting position. However, if there is an eligible Nextel Cup Series past champion entered who has not already qualified, that past champion will receive the 43rd and final position. If there is more than one past champion eligible for this berth, it goes to the most recent champion.

another way to look at it:

The following cars will be assigned to the first of the two qualifying races:

The odd-number positions (1st, 3rd, 5th, etc.) of the highest-ranked 35 finishers in the final previous NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series car owner points standings.

The pole winner from Bud Pole Qualifying scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 11. Should the pole winner be among the highest-ranked 35 in the the previous season owner points, the pole winner will start in the first race regardless of his odd or even position in those standings. The following cars will be assigned to the second of the two qualifying races:

The even-number positions (2nd, 4th, 6th, etc.) of the highest-ranked 35 finishers in the final previous season NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series car owner points standings.

The second-fastest qualifier from Bud Pole Qualifying. Should this car be among the highest-ranked 35 in the previous season owner points, it will start in the second race regardless of its odd or even position in those standings. Additional cars that were not among the highest-ranked 35 in the final previous season car owner points will be alternated between the first and second 150-mile qualifying events using an odd-even format. The odd-number positions will be assigned to the first qualifier while the even-number positions will be assigned to the second qualifier.

The odd-even positions are not determined by where the car qualified in the overall field, but their specific qualifying order among those cars not part of the highest-ranked 35 group. For example, a car qualifies eighth overall in Bud Pole qualifying, but ranks third-fastest among those cars not part of the highest-ranked 35. That car would be an odd-number position and start in the first race as a result of its qualifying standing of those cars not in the highest-ranked 35.

The lineup for each qualifying race will be set based upon the qualifying speeds in the time trials for all cars, including those who are among the highest-ranked 35 in the finalprevious season car owner point standings. The highest-ranked 35 designation does not determine the car’s starting position, only the assignment of its 150-mile qualifying event.

A maximum of 66 cars will be permitted to compete between the two qualifying races, and all cars must compete in one of these events to be eligible for the Daytona 500.

Starting positions for the Daytona 500 will be designated for the highest-ranked 35 positions from the final previous season car owner point standings from each qualifier, the two-highest finishing cars in each qualifier not among that highest-ranked 35 group and the two front-row qualifiers.

The balance of the 43-car field will be filled by the fastest remaining qualifiers who have not earned a starting position, with the exception of the 43rd position which will be assigned to an eligible former or current NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series champion. Should there not be an eligible champion, the position will be assigned to the next fastest qualifier not in the field.
  • The simple version: how the Daytona 500 lineup is set:
Pos 1 and 2: Pole sitter and outside pole sitter from Bud Pole qualifying
[no need to be top 35 in prevoius season car Owners Points]

Pos 3 thru 39: top 35 in prevoius season car owners points and two highest finishing teams in each Gatorade Duel races race NOT in the top 35 set by their finishing postion in the Gatorade Duel races.

Pos 40-42: fastest qualifiers not in by above

Pos 43: past champion provisional, otherwise the spot goes to the next fastest qualifier.
  • The Gatorade Duel races: The Daytona 500 pole-sitter will start on the pole of the first Gatorade Duel at Daytona. The outside pole winner will start on the pole of the second qualifying race.

Cars that finished in odd positions (first, third, fifth, etc.) in owner's points last season will fill the first qualifying race, and those with even-number finishes will compete in the second race. The lineup for each qualifying race will be set based on the qualifying speeds. Owner's points do not determine the car's starting position, only which of the two Duel races in which it will race.

Cars that were not among the highest-ranked 35 in the previous season will be alternately entered into the two 150-mile qualifying events based on qualifying speeds. The non-top 35 car with the fastest qualifying time is entered into the first (odd) Duel race, the next-fastest in the second (even) race and so on.

1st Practice: Rudd 1st quick, Gilliland 2nd quick
2nd Practice: Rudd 1st quick, Gilliland 3rd quick

We know Yates horsepower is SUPER strong at plate tracks, so these two have to be considered the faves for the Pole today...too bad they matched em up against each other..lol..

Gilliland just logged his first laps here this week, so that's advantage Rudd...but in his only plate race in the 38 last year, he logged the pole at the fall Dega race....then ran 2nd last night in the Shootout...so don't think u can use the rookie tag against him..

2006 Daytona 500: 88 qualified 3rd on speed, 38 4th on speed...
2006 Pepsi 400 : 88 qualified 7th, 38 qualified 13th..

Good article on both Yates drivers...
http://sports.espn.go.com/rpm/columns/story?seriesId=2&columnist=newton_david&id=2760697

Bottom Line: I think this is too close to bet on personally..gun to the head, I take the 88...more experience, better track history at Daytona too...also, Rudd was the class of both practices on speed..

First off, McMurray will be on my radar in a matchup next week...to get better vig then, I should hope for McMurray to be a bit off on time...but I like McMurray a bit here too..he's a good qualifier and normally Kenseth goes a little conservative on this plate qualifying runs...McMurray has been one of the better drafters of late, so I'm looking forward to a matchup next Sunday..

Bottom line: I think McMurray wins this matchup, but not the strongest play on the board IMO..

1st Practice: Montoya 9th quick, Stremme 8th quick
2nd Practice: Montoya 6th quick, Stremme 7th quick

2006 Daytona 500: 42 car 28th, 40 car 41st on time
2006 Pepsi 400: 42 car 41st, 40 car 3rd on time

Here are two pole sleepers for today..Along w/ the 19, these are the two hopes for the pole for the Dodge camp....U gotta expect some nerves for Montoya in this qualifying run, and Stremme has a bit more experence as evidenced by his two lap run in the 400 after flaming out in his qualifying run in the 500 last year...I expect Montoya to miss a mark or two here and I think there's some value on the 40 car here at even money..they're a wash at best on time, intangibles to the 40..

Bottom Line: should be a -110 matchup, and Montoya is getting bet by name here..wash on time, small play for me on the 40 car...will finalize plays after all the breakdowns..

<TABLE borderColor=#000000 cellSpacing=0 width=620 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle width=55>157</TD><TD width=300>Carl Edwards </TD><TD width=65>-135 </TD><TD width=200></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><TABLE borderColor=#000000 cellSpacing=0 width=620 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle width=55>158</TD><TD width=300>Jeff Burton </TD><TD width=65>+110 </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

1st Practice: Edwards 49th, Burton 47th quick
2nd Practice: Edwards 51st, Burton

2006 Daytona 500: Edwards 26th, Burton 1st on time
2006 Pepsi 400: Edwards 29th, Burton 39th

OK, this one makes very little sense to me...Burton hasn't shown much down here yet, but come on...why he's +115 here makes no sense..they want u to lay 135 w/ Carl Edwards..

IMO, based on Make alone, if you're getting + vig on a Chevy vs a Ford (not named Yates) you should take the bet at Daytona for qualifying...but you also get the guy who sat POLE last year in this race (after not showing much speed at all in practice) vs a guy who's never shown qualifying speed since he started cup...Burton is a guy who practices setting up the car to draft in practice..this team obviously has a good qualifying setup they can throw at this thing evidenced by the run last year...

I don't get this one at all..

AS for the times during practice..from team report:

Burton's No. 31 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet was 47th in the first practice, but had a problem with its scoring transponder on its first run that did not register.

Burton's crew chief Scott Miller said he was satisfied enough with the way his team had tested that he was not compelled to even make an attempt in the second practice

Bottom Line: this one SCREAMS value

1st Practice: Gordon 4th, Kyle 13th
2nd Practice: Gordon 5th, Kyle 8th

2006 Daytona 500: Gordon 2nd on time, Kyle 8th
2006 Pepsi 400: Gordon 4th, Kyle 13th

Gordon is as close to a sure thing as u can get on just sheer speed at plate tracks, but esp Daytona...he's going to qualify top 10, most likely top 5, and u can count on it..Betting against him in a qualifying matchup at Daytona makes no sense and would never be profitable in the long run..

Gordon thinks the two Yates cars are unbeatable (except maybe Marlin)..but he still sounds confident on the speed his car has..just not optimistic about his pole chances..

Gordon was fourth in the first practice (48.625 seconds, 185.090 mph) and fifth in the second (48.501 / 185.563) on his only attempt, but wasn't too optimistic about his chances.

"Nobody's got anything for those Yates cars [though] maybe Marlin does," Gordon said. "We're just trying to get the best starting position that we can for the [qualifying races]."

Bottom Line: Busch has good speed and is capable, but Gordon should take this...I don't see any value in it however, so i'm passing overall on this one..

Blaney/Petty: I have no intest in this matchup...Blaney in a TOYT, Petty is a broadcaster now (LOL), so no interest in tossing a coin on this one..

Martin/Busch: Zero value here...Kurt is a sexy 500 pick, but Martin has been good at Daytona and now has the Chevy to boot...I think he's a sleeper overall..also, Nemechech put the 01 car in the 3rd low in the 400 last summer...I wouldn't be surprised if Martin upsets Kurt here honestly..

<TABLE borderColor=#000000 cellSpacing=0 width=620 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle width=55>163</TD><TD width=300>Greg Biffle </TD><TD width=65>-125 </TD><TD width=200></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><TABLE borderColor=#000000 cellSpacing=0 width=620 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle width=55>164</TD><TD width=300>Casey Mears </TD><TD width=65>+100 </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

1st Practice: Biffle 16th, Mears 25th
2nd Practice: Biffle 22nd, Mears 26th

2006 Daytona 500: Biffle 25th on time, the 25 car 15th (Vickers)
2006 Pepsi 400: Biffle 12th, 25 car 17th (Vickers)

Mears will be a popular pick to run well here, esp after Vickers victory in the 25 car at the Dega fall race and Mears running 2nd in the 500 last year in the 42 Dodge...He hasn't shown sheer speed yet though, so I can't recommend a qualifying play on him...he's shown the least amt of speed out of the four Hendrick cars..

Bottom Line: Biffle has been consistent on Daytona the last two years, besides not the getting the race results...he's cars have been fairly stout (for Roush fords)...I think Biffle is the play, but enough value..

Two Plays for me overall:

Stremme OVER Montoya +100 (1 unit)
Burton OVER Edwards +110 (1 unit)

I feel inclined to bet the Burton one more cause of the value IMO, but I"m flat betting matchups this year all year...studied results from last year, and seems the profitable way to go..

GL today boys.

Watching Nascar LIVE and normally the later draw is a disadvantage as that head win picks up on the backstretch...but I guess it's expected to die down late today..

So the later the draw the better it seems..

Kenseth time disallowed after failing post-qualifying inspection

Although Matt Kenseth was 11th fastest on Sunday, he will have to start at the back of his Gatorade Duel field after an irregularity with the car was discovered in post-qualifying inspection. Kasey Kahne and Michael Waltrip also had trouble pleasing the NASCAR inspectors.

Yeah..both Kenseth and Kahne's times were disallowed..

Notes: Kenseth, Kahne qual times disallowed

Drivers will start at the back of second Gatorade Duel

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Qualifying times for Matt Kenseth and Kasey Kahne were disallowed following Sunday's Bud Pole Qualifying at Daytona International Speedway after the two cars were found to have "unapproved aerodynamic devices."

NASCAR vice president of corporate communications Jim Hunter said the No. 17 Ford and No. 9 Dodge would be placed at the back of Thursday's second Gatorade Duel. In addition, Hunter said NASCAR will consider the possibility of future fines, suspensions and penalties against the two teams for the rulebook violation.

Hunter said both cars had "holes in places were they would normally be sealed and these were not." Kenseth's was reportedly in a wheel well. Hunter did not specify the location of the holes in Kahne's car.
Last year, Jimmie Johnson and Terry Labonte had their qualifying runs thrown out after failing inspection.

"Our inspection process is getting better every year," Hunter said. "We are committed to trying to stop all games being played."

so confused... they are put to the back of the pack for the gatorade duel but it was qualifying for the 500?

or is the Gatorade thing just more qualifying?:36_7_14:

Shortened version from above...

The simple version: how the Daytona 500 lineup is set:
Pos 1 and 2: Pole sitter and outside pole sitter from Bud Pole qualifying
[no need to be top 35 in prevoius season car Owners Points]

Pos 3 thru 39: top 35 in prevoius season car owners points and two highest finishing teams in each Gatorade Duel races race NOT in the top 35 set by their finishing postion in the Gatorade Duel races.

Pos 40-42: fastest qualifiers not in by above

Pos 43: past champion provisional, otherwise the spot goes to the next fastest qualifier

Basically...

the 38 will start 1st, the 88 will start 2nd..

the Rest of the starting order will be determined by the results in the duals...basically the order from the first dual determining the inside row, and the 2nd dual the outside row...

as well as who can participate and who can't that weren't guaranteed spots..

the Qualifying for Daytona is messed up big time..
