A number of 5-7 football teams will play in bowl games this year, butMissouri won't be one of them.
Teams with 5-7 records will become eligible for at least two bowl bids and as many as five, based on their Academic Progress Rates. The NCAA Division I council approved a recommendation made by the football oversight committee Monday to fill the record 41 bowls with five-win teams because not enough teams will meet the standard bowl-eligibility requirements.
There are 75 teams with at least six victories and a .500 record going into the final weekend of the regular season. Only three more can get to six wins.
Missouri, however, announced Monday that it would not pursue a bowl game this season. Instead, athletic director Mack Rhoades wants to keep his focus on finding Gary Pinkel's replacement. Pinkel resigned as Tigers coach earlier this month for health reasons.
"Following this weekend's football games, there have been significant discussions nationally concerning 5-7 teams participating in bowl games," Rhoades said in a statement. "After careful consideration, we have decided it is not in the best interest of our football program to seek permission from the NCAA to participate in a bowl game. Our focus remains on identifying the right leader for our program and moving forward with the transition process."

First-year Mizzou defensive coordinator Barry Odom is also a candidate.
Based on 2013-14, Nebraska has the best APR among 5-7 teams, at 985. Missouri and Kansas State are next on the list, with an APR of 976, followed by Minnesota (975), San Jose State (975), Illinois (973) andRice (973).
Kansas State can become bowl eligible Saturday with a win at West Virginia, but the Wildcats should get in either way. Georgia State (5-6) visits Georgia Southern and South Alabama (5-6) hosts Appalachian State as those teams seek to reach bowl-eligibility based on record and shut out the 5-7 teams with high APRs.
In the past 20 years, only three teams with losing records have received bowl berths: Georgia Tech (2012), UCLA (2011) and North Texas (2001).
Missouri was the site of protests this fall amid accusations of racism on campus. The football team joined the protest and threatened to stay off the field until University of Missouri system president Tim Wolfe resigned based on the demands of a black student protester on a hunger strike.
As for the bowl game, before the school's decision, Pinkel said he would not coach in it, and Missouri had appointed quarterbacks coach Andy Hill interim head coach.

Thoughts?

Good for Mizzou, though. I like that. For whatever their reasons may be, I like it.

At first i didnt like the idea of a 5 win team in because the quality of play could be horrific but it looks like Nebraska, K St and a few others wouldn't water it down too bad. These 5 win teams are better than a lot of the 6 win teams with weak schedules.

What is the NCAA thinking? They KNOW that having 41 bowls (or whatever the number is) means that there won't be enough 6-win teams to fill the slots.

They need to contract this nonsense by at least a half dozen bowls. And don't take out the mid-majors, those are the ones I want to see, and those are the ones who have earned it by having good seasons worth celebrating. Get rid of the bullshit 6-6 and 7-5 teams from major conferences. I DO NOT NEED TO SEE Auburn, Arizona, ASU, Penn St, Texas Tech, Va Tech, or NC St playing anymore football games this year!!!

Why does anyone want LESS games? No one has to watch the ones you don't consider a good matchup and LOL if you think teams are celebrating going to a bowl any more. For most it means practice instead of family time over the holidays. Think anybody gets excited about a trip to Boise in December for the Potato Bowl?

For us though, it's an additional 41 gambling opportunities that you can play or pass on. Besides, what the fuck else are you going to watch on the weeknights in December?

Good points both ways.

I am more for few games but more quality but I get kdogs point..

The biggest thing is all the extra practices a team gets...that is huge.

Its fucking stupid. That is the whole problem.

Please explain why you think it is fucking stupid and how it is a problem keeping in mind that 1) you are totally free to not watch any or all of the games and 2) bowls no longer mean ANYTHING since the playoff system started, they exist solely as revenue generators which the conferences divide up among their member schools however their rules say to.

As a K-State fan I will be more than happy for them to get to play in a bowl if they finish 5-7. Why? First of all a young team gets 2 extra weeks of practice and just as important I get something to do/look forward to on Dec 26 or Jan 2. What else do I have to do on a Tuesday night in January? Shit I get to pound beers and watch my shitty team play an Arkansas or an Arizona State....win/win.

If the school can't afford to possibly lose money or the players dont give a shit then dont accept the bid. If K-State plays in Tempe in January they'll have 15,000 minimum roll down there to party for a couple days.

I'm for as many bowl games as possible for - down times during the Christmas season, gambling pools and wagering, even though K-State, Nebraska and a few others didn't play well enough to earn the reward that is a bowl game.

I would rather watch UTSA and FIU play a bowl game in mid december than any college basketball game you could come up with at that time. I just have an inherent love of football, specifically college football to where I can watch the games even when I know they don't matter. I enjoy CBB but not until the time the smaller conference tourneys start. It's just really hard for me to get into a regular season game.

That is why I want as many bowl games as possible...purely for selfish entertainment reasons

+1
Dont watch if you don't ike the matchups, otherwise it's another game to analyze and possible make some coin off of. CCB has its time in March.
