Buckeyes still atop Ohio recruiting



I think it is safe to say this is the year of the tight end in the state of Ohio. Of the eight tight ends we have evaluated, three of them are in the ESPN 150 -- Brandon Moore (Trotwood, Ohio/Madison), Kyle Rudolph (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) and Jake Stoneburner (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman). They all have great height and long arms with upside to become a force in the trenches, not just in the passing game.

Of the top 15 prospects we have seen in Ohio, 10 of them are on the offensive side of the football if you count DeVoe Torrence (Massillon, Ohio/Washington), who may actually have more upside on defense, and four of those 10 are tight ends, including Nic DiLillo (Madison, Ohio/Central). As expected Ohio State has a stranglehold on the top prospects in the state right now, including five of the top six offensive players.

However, prospects such as OT Zebrie Sanders (Clayton, Ohio/North) are still wide open. Sanders as of now has just visited Florida with an expected visit to Georgia in November. As far as a tug of war between Michigan and Ohio State? Well, there isn't much of one as Sanders does not even list Michigan or Ohio State in his top choices -- those distinctions belong to UCLA, Florida and Georgia. We can see why Ohio State has backed off, as Sanders looks great on the hoof and passes the eye test but is very raw and has some developing to do.


One of the more productive offensive guys in Ohio this year has got to be WR Cordale Scott (Glenville, Ohio). While we have debated back and forth just where he should be graded, we do feel we have him ranked appropriately. He is a very versatile prospect in all three phases of the game and is likely being recruited to play wide receiver, but his size and upside on defense could see him on that side of the ball as well at the next level. He is not a burner, which is why we don't have him ranked in the 80s. Scott has yet to name his top favorites or set any official visits, but Ohio State, Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan State are among the teams paying the most attention.

Top Recruit

While Ohio State did not pursue Moore, he is clearly not holding any ill feelings toward the Buckeyes, who in their own right have put together a great early class to this point."I don't resent OSU for not offering. I love Michigan and just look forward to the great rivalry -- nothing personal," said Moore this week.
However, in our opinion, Moore is the best athlete with the most upside to become the complete package at tight end out of all the tight ends in this state. We also feel he could contribute right away on passing downs, and so do the Michigan coaches.


"The Michigan coaches said I got a chance to play early, particularly in the receiving game with my speed, possibly be the second tight end with Kozer," Moore added.


You just don't see tight end prospects with his natural height and speed with the upside to be an imposing blocker down the road. He already weighs about 245 and could easily add 15 pounds and still be a serious receiving threat.


As Michigan struggled in the early going on the field, Moore never wavered on his commitment to the Wolverines.
"I am fired up about this class, talked to Sam (RB Sam McGuffie) and Darryl Stonum, and they are great guys and great offensive players who feel the same way about the class. Nobody ever felt like de-committing when Michigan was struggling early, most of the guys I talked to have a lot of pride in Michigan and being a Wolverine."
Under the Radar Player

Trey Fairchild, Wide receiver
Coffman (Dublin, Ohio)
Verbal commitment: SyracuseThis dude is just a plain, old-fashioned football player much in the same way Anthony Gonzalez was for Ohio State the past few seasons. Now you may say, "Syracuse? Hmm." However, his choice of Syracuse doesn't mean he isn't a good player; in fact, it probably means others have missed on him, much in the same way UConn's Brad Kanuch was bypassed from the 2006 class.
Fairchild can really run and his open field run after catch skills have him lining up as a tweener running back/wide receiver, which makes him dangerous on screens, end arounds and also in the deep passing game. His speed does not jump out at you when you first see him -- he is more of an acquired taste. Fairchild has an overachiever element to him that you respect because you know he works very hard at the game, and there is an attention to detail in everything he does. We think the fact that he is not as smooth or fluid as some others in the class is what has kept him laying low on a national scale. Regardless, you must have one of these guys on your roster.

On the Trail (BCS)

Ohio State, 11 commits
To this point, we have been very impressed by the Buckeyes' efforts in the early going. In fact, we feel this class will likely surpass the quality 2006 group that was brought in. With 11 commitments so far and six of them in the ESPN 150, this class is off to a great start with just over 4 months to go until signing day. Needs are being met with quality players across the board, especially at offensive tackle with Michael Brewster (Orlando, Fla./Edgewater), J.B. Shugarts (Spring, Texas/Klein) and Mike Adams (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman). Also, the Buckeyes are thin at outside linebacker, and this is why DeVoe Torrence (Massillon, Ohio/Washington) needs to stay on defense alongside ILB Andrew Sweat (Washington, Pa/Trinity) and OLB Nathan Williams (Washington-Couthouse, Ohio/Miami Trace). We still think they need a top flight quarterback, though.

Cincinnati, 19 commits
This is one of the more under-the-radar classes in the country, and as the Bearcats continue to succeed on the gridiron, it could only get better. With 19 commits if you count postgrad Ike Iloegbu (Cincinnati, Ohio/Harmony), if he and ATH Bruce Horner (Birmingham, Mich./Groves) remain at safety, then Cincy will be meeting its secondary needs along with CB Dominique Battle (Delray Beach, Fla./Amercian Heritage-Boca-Delray). QB Domonick Britt (Trotwood, Ohio/Madison) is the right fit for Brian Kelly's version of the spread offense and was a marquee pickup for them for a publicity standpoint, now he just needs to pan out. We would like for Cincy to sign a couple of defensive tackles, as this is a lean spot on their roster.

Christopher Lawlor's Game of the Week

No. 3 St. Xavier-Cincinnati (8-0) at St. Ignatius-Cleveland (7-1), Saturday, at 1:30 p.m. ET
It's a clash between two of Ohio's Jesuit high schools. Both teams' quarterbacks -- St. Xavier's John Hurley (knee) and St. Ignatius' junior Andrew Holland (shoulder) -- were injured in wins last weekend. Their statuses are unknown for the game at Byers Field in Parma. St. Xavier backup QB, sophomore Luke Massa, went 5-for-5 for 122 yards and a TD in nearly three quarters of a 45-0 shellacking of St. Edward (Lakewood). St. Ignatius, Ohio's No. 7-ranked large school (Division I), has been shut out twice in its last two against the Bombers. -- Lawlor

Ohio is Football! There may be some residents in the South who snicker at that comment, but Ohio natives are well in their right to shout that claim.

Ohio is also home to Big East rising star Cincinnati, where new head coach Brian Kelly and his "Cat Attack" offense are opening eyes. This state also boasts six non-BCS College Bowl Subdivision programs in addition to one of the top I-AA programs in the land in Youngstown State and D-III powerhouse Mount Union. High school football is also strong in this state with several excellent programs like St. Xavier and Colerain, among many others.


When it comes to high school prospects, Ohio is arguably the best among states above the Mason-Dixon. The 2008 class is good, but offense-heavy, with seven of the top 10 prospects on that side of the ball. Defense has been a strong point in past classes, though; defensive back Kurt Coleman (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont) from the 2006 class who is playing in Ohio State's secondary, and defensive end Ben Martin (Cincinnati/LaSalle) is a promising pass rusher at Tennessee. So while the pickings are a bit slimmer in this class, Ohio is still worth a look when it comes to defensive talent.

A quick scan of the Ohio state rankings would lead you to believe that outside linebacker prospect Nathan Williams (Washington Courthouse, Ohio/Miami Trace) is the state's top-rated defensive prospect, but that honor goes athlete prospect McCarthy. McCarthy, who plays both quarterback and safety in high school, has committed to Notre Dame as a safety.

McCarthy will admit that he likes playing both ways but is ready for the challenge of becoming a college safety.


"At the college level, it is much more demanding. I am excited to turn my focus to one side of the ball and excel at the safety position," said McCarthy.


While he will be leaving the quarterback position behind, he feels like that experience will serve him well as a defensive back in college.
"You see the game from a different perspective. On the defensive side of the ball, you know what the quarterback is thinking, and that is a benefit."
His experience as a quarterback will not be the only thing that helps his full-time transition to safety, as his older brother Kyle is currently a red-shirt sophomore safety at Notre Dame. He says his brother has taught him a lot and plans to help him learn the Notre Dame defense this off-season so he will have a jump when he hits South Bend next fall.
Despite the rough start for the Irish, McCarthy says he is firm in his commitment.


"I think the future is bright for Notre Dame."
He plans to take his official on December 8th.

Under the Radar Player

Steve Gardiner, Linebacker
Coffman (Dublin, Ohio)

Considering: Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Northwestern, Ohio State, Michigan State

Dublin-Coffman High School has proven it can produce some excellent football talent, as the home of 2007 first-round draft pick QB Brady Quinn and also where ESPN 150 prospects offensive lineman Mike Adams and tight end Jake Stoneburner play.
Beyond the spotlight is Gardiner, another fine prospect. On Recruiting Insider on ESPNU, we cover different under the radar players for each position, and when we covered linebackers, Gardiner was an obvious choice.


He needs to add bulk to his frame to play inside linebacker but is well-rounded at the position. Despite a lack of ideal size, he is tough versus the run by playing downhill and taking precise pursuit angles. He is a good tackler who can explode into a ball carrier and can also handle his own in coverage, reading the quarterback's eyes well and possessing excellent ball skills. He displays the frame to add the needed size, and if he can get bigger and keep his athleticism, he could be a sleeper in this class.
He may not end up at Ohio State with his teammates, but programs like Pittsburgh, Northwestern, and West Virginia are in position to possibly nab this underrated prospect.
On the Trail (non-BCS)

Ohio has six non-BCS programs within its borders, and all have landed at least one prospect so far. The Akron Zips, trying to get back to a bowl game after staying home last season, currently have five verbal commitments to this point, three in-state.

Bowling Green also has five verbal commitments, all from Ohio and four of them offensive linemen.


Miami-Ohio has been the most active so far with nine commitments. They have plucked talent from several states, like center Nick Kemper (Lake Howell, Fla./Winter Park) from Florida and running back Dan Green (Melrose, Ill./Walther Lutheran) from Illinois. The Redhawks have also been busy landing in-state prospects, like linebacker Luke Kelly (Cincinnati/Turprin).
The Frank Solich-led Ohio Bobcats have two commitments so far. Neither are Ohio natives, but both are offensive line prospects. No. 21-rated center Rich Bell (Salisbury, Conn.) hails from Connecticut.
Toledo has one commitment at this point, as does Kent State, which has a verbal from guard Charles Walls (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood).
Christopher Lawlor's Game of the Week

Ursuline-Youngstown (7-1) at No. 13 Cardinal Mooney-Youngstown (8-0), Friday, 7:30 p.m. ET
The cross-town rivalry is renewed at Youngstown State University's 20,630-seat Stambaugh Stadium. The Cardinals eked out a 21-17 victory over St. Vincent-St. Mary (Akron) for its 22nd straight win but needed to rally from a 17-0 deficit. Notre Dame-bound QB Dan McCarthy's 23-yard TD to TE Mike Gemma late in the fourth avoided the upset. The Fighting Irish have won four straight since losing 14-3 to Massillon Washington on Sept. 14. Ursuline, No. 6 in Ohio's Division V, is fresh off a 28-0 win over Beaver (Lisbon), registering its third shutout. --Lawlor

Top classes of Miami, USC filling needs


It's the time of year that most of college football's elite programs have started formulating the nucleus of their 2008 recruiting class.
As we have stated before, we are not huge fans of ranking recruiting classes at this point because so much can happen between now and national signing day, which this year is Feb. 6, 2008. Recruiting is a marathon, not a sprint, and the reality is that you will never truly know just how good a recruiting class is until about two or three years down the road.


It is also very important to keep in mind that the quality of the player coupled with the goal of meeting needs far outweighs the quantity of the class both now and on national signing day. The following 10 teams, plus our bonus team, in our opinion have done an excellent job to this point not only receiving verbal commitments on top prospects, but meeting most, if not all, of their needs at this early stage.


As always, there are holes to be filled and voids to be closed, and lots can happen over the next several months. Defections, lots of official visits to change the minds of impressionable 17-year-olds and what happens on the field throughout the rest of the season can have a dramatic effect on the decisions that will be made by the thousands of prospects eligible to sign a letter of intent.

1. Miami (FL), 11 ESPN 150 commits
Speed, speed and more speed -- especially on defense. However, this is a precarious No. 1; many of the Miami commitments are considered "soft," meaning they can change, but for now, they are Hurricanes.

The Canes need at defensive end is great if Calais Campbell and Eric Moncur depart for NFL this year or next and with DE Vegas Franklin being a senior as well. Allen Bailey is a force from the 2007 class (No. 3 DE) but is expected to be developed into an outside linebacker. Current ends Courtney Harris and Steven Wesley are solid players, but Shannon likes to keep guys fresh and rotate. So far, they have filled the need. Marcus Robinson (Homestead, Fla.) is a 'tweener OLB/DE at this point but possesses more upside with his rangy frame and explosiveness than any prospect in the Miami class. Miami also continued its pursuit of elite defensive tackles with Marcus Forston (Miami/Northwestern).


Most of the depth players at safety are juniors, and Kenny Phillips could make the jump to the NFL. Although Miami does not have one true, top positional safety committed at this point, it does have guys who can be developed there. Ramon Buchanan (Melbourne, Fla./Palm Bay), our No. 1 OLB prospect, is more of a hybrid safety. Patrick Johnson, our No. 1 rated corner, possesses the size and physicality to play safety and should give Shannon great scheme versatility. We are not sure S Joseph Wylie (Lauderdale Lakes, Fla./Boyd Anderson) is the answer.


An added plus is sleeper QB Taylor Cook (Houston/Rice Consolidated), who fills a much-needed void on the Miami roster and will join last year's big QB pickup, Robert Marve, on the depth chart.


2. USC, 7 ESPN 150 commits
The Trojans need tight end help with Fred Davis and Dale Thompson graduating and not much depth after next in line Anthony McCoy. Class of 2008 TE Blake Ayles (Orange, Calif./Lutheran) is getting bigger and better as a senior.

They lose OLB Keith Rivers to graduation and Brian Cushing could leave for the draft, the backups are juniors and the Trojans did not sign an outside linebacker in 2007. OLB Maurice Simmons (Compton, Calif./Dominguez) is tough, has a nose for the ball but will likely miss the rest of the season with a broken leg.

More importantly, they are going to have to restock on the offensive line. Offensive tackles Drew Radovich and Sam Baker graduate at the end of the season, but help is on the way big time. Four tackles are committed thus far, including Matt Kalil (Anaheim, Calif./Servite), Matt Meyer (Stockton, Calif./Lincoln), Tyron Smith (Moreno Valley, Calif./Rancho Verde) and Daniel Campbell (Houston/Aldine), an impressive group.
For the most part the Trojans' current receivers are green, and Brice Butler (Norcross, Ga.), D.J. Shoemate (Anaheim, Calif./Servite) and sleeper Chris Polk (Redlands, Calif./East Valley) add even more playmakers.


3. Notre Dame, 7 ESPN 150 commits
The Fighting Irish's top defensive ends are seniors, and they did not bring in a true defensive end in the 2007 class. Defensive coordinator Corwin Brown's 3-4 scheme will finally welcome some excellent defensive help for the first time in three classes, especially in the front seven.

OLB/DE 'tweeners Darius Fleming (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) and Anthony McDonald (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Notre Dame) should fit well schematically. Ethan Johnson (Portland, Ore./Lincoln), at 6-4 and 266 pounds, possesses the size and skill sought after in a 3-4 end and possesses interior linemen run-stopping skills. Notre Dame has little depth at nose guard, and DT Omar Hunter (Buford, Geo.) is the definition of the position. This was a huge pickup. There is also little depth at center, and No. 1 OC Braxston Cave (Granger, Ind./Penn) or Mike Golic Jr. (Avon, Conn./Northwest Catholic) could find themselves competing whether ready or not.

Don't kid yourself, the quarterback position is not locked up, and Dayne Crist (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Notre Dame) is a critical addition to this roster as both Zach Frazer and Demetrius Jones have departed the program.





4. Georgia, 7 ESPN 150 commits


The Bulldogs have good depth at WR, but a good chunk of their main contributors are seniors (Sean Bailey, Mikey Henderson, A.J. Bryant and Percie Croffie), and they need playmakers! They will welcome A.J. Green (Summerville, S.C.) and Tavarres King (Mt. Airy, Ga./Habersham Central), ranked No. 2 and 18 in the country, respectively. Georgia has had good speed at the position, but lacks consistency and a sure-handed, big-play guy -- Green fills that void.

The Bulldogs need a kicker; Brandon Coutu has had injury issues and accuracy problems. Kicker Blair Walsh (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) has huge upside and a big leg.

2007 ILB Rennie Curran was a good pickup last year (No. 8 ILB), but inside linebacker depth is low. Brandon Miller and Chris Gaudner are seniors, Marcus Washington and Benjamin Boyd are juniors and they have no 2008 inside linebacker pledge yet. Current outside linebacker commits Christian Robinson (Norcross, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian) and Marcus Dowtin (Fork Union, Va./Military) are tall, rangier true perimeter guys, so we feel they need more beef up the middle.


You need multiple running backs in the SEC, and as Knowshon Moreno has come into his own, Georgia has added two outstanding backs -- RB Richard Samuel (Cartersville, Geo./Cass) and Barry Sanders-like Carlton Thomas (Frostproof, Fla.).


5. Texas, 8 ESPN 150 commits

Tre Newton is the workhouse back for No. 7 Southlake Carroll High School.




Texas needs wide receivers in case you haven't noticed, and it looks like John Chiles will stay at quarterback for his career. Wide receivers Limas Sweed, Billy Pittman and Nate Jones are gone next year, but Dan Buckner (Allen, Texas) may be its next Roy Williams. Athlete prospect Antoine Hicks (Arlington, Texas/Timberview) is this year's Chiles and underrated, but expect a move to wide receiver. Athlete prospect DeSean Hales is a jet, but he is undersized and could play running back, too. Tre Newton (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) is a solid prospect in the backfield, but we feel Texas needs better.

Defensively, Frank Okam (senior), Roy Miller (junior) and Derek Lokey (senior) are solid up front, but will be gone soon. Pledge DT Jarvis Humphrey (Cedar Hill, Texas) is a stemwinder in the same mold as the guys above. DT Kheeston Randall (Beaumont, Texas/Monsignor Kelly) has a great frame with upside and is an active player. Class of 2007 OLB Keenan Robinson and sophomore Roddrick Muckelroy could be future playmakers, but the depth is made up of upper classmen and senior starters. However, help is on the way to the linebacking corps. Emmanuel Acho (Dallas/Saint Mark's), Nolan Brewster (Denver/Mullen) and Ryan Roberson (Brenham, Texas) round out the group coming in. Roberson is small, but a real player.





6. Ohio State, 6 ESPN 150 commits

The Buckeyes must add depth to the O-line with Kirk Barton being a senior and Alex Boone a junior who could consider departing early for the draft. Help is on the way big time with three outstanding tackles in Michael Brewster (Orlando, Fla./Edgewater), J.B. Shugarts (Spring, Texas/Klein) and Mike Adams (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman).

Linebacker is another need position with Curtis Terry and Larry Grant being seniors. Linebacker Andrew Sweat (Washington, Pa./Trinity) could play outside and has the sideline-to-sideline range and fits their scheme. OLB Nathan Williams (Washington Courthouse, Ohio/Miami Trace) is much bigger than Sweat and could play with his hand down.


With the offfield troubles for QB Antonio Henton and an overall lack of depth at quarterback, the Buckeyes really need to land athlete prospect Terrelle Pryor (Jeannette, Pa.). This is a concern position in our opinion.





7. Oklahoma, 6 ESPN 150 commits

R.J. Washington (above) and Jermie Calhoun, Texas' two top-rated prospects, are both heading to Oklahoma.




The Sooners have very little underclassmen depth at outside linebacker. We project Joseph Ibiloye (Garland, Texas/South Garland), a hybrid safety, to slide down to outside linebacker. With some continued physical development, he could be a good player. We are not sure OLB Taylor Hill (Youngstown, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney) is Oklahoma caliber. Insider linebacker Daniel Franklin (Mt. Airy, Ga./Habersham Central) could move outside in time, too. We feel they did just an adequate job filling the outside linebacker need.

Running backs Jermie Calhoun (Van, Texas) and Justin Johnson (Gilmer, Texas) are both excellent and potentially premier guys. They got much needed safety depth last year but need corners. Reggie Smith is a junior and could come out for draft, Marcus Walker is a senior and Lendy Holmes is a junior, and the Sooners have no cornerbacks yet committed to the class.
This class does feature a premier pass-rusher in R.J. Washington (Keller, Texas/Fossil Ridge) and QB Landry Jones (Artesia, N.M.), an intriguing dual-threat passer.





8. Clemson, 6 ESPN 150 commits

Clemson commit Kyle Parker is a top-ten quarterback in the '08 class.




Clemson needs wide receivers; four seniors will be departing at that position and the Tigers need guys to join Jacoby Ford, Aaron Kelly and Co. WR Marquan Jones (Blythewood, S.C.) is a good one and will join up-and-coming Xavier Dye on the perimeter. Current defensive tackles Dorell Scott, Rashaad Jackson and Jock McKissic give quality to the rotation, but all are juniors. DT/DE DaQuan Bowers (Bamberg, S.C./Ehrhardt) is a huge pickup for the Tigers along the front four.
Running back may not seem like an immediate need, but if either James Davis or C.J. Spiller decide to depart early, Clemson will be glad it landed versatile talent Andre Ellington (Berkeley, S.C.), who has Spiller-type qualities.
This is a quality class with top players across the board adding depth at many positions including quarterback, corner, outside linebacker and along the offensive line.





9. Florida State, 6 ESPN 150 commits

Nigel Carr ranks as the No. 3 outside linebacker in Florida and No. 4 in the entire Class of 2008.




As good as this list looks on paper, there are still some areas of concern that need to be addressed. The Seminoles need a force along the front four at defensive tackle and so far they have landed only Anthony Hill (Pensacola, Fla.). They also have little depth at linebacker and have suffered injuries to their younger players at this spot. Both Nigel Bradham (Crawfordville, Fla./Wakulla) and Nigel Carr (Jacksonville, Fla./First Coast) should fill the void, and Carr could wind up at end. QB E.J. Manuel (Virginia Beach, Va./Bayside) should flourish under offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher and is a much-needed addition to an underachieving position for the Seminoles.
This class is loaded with quality skills players like ATH Jermaine Thomas (Jacksonville, Fla./First Coast) and CB/S Terrance Parks (Fairburn, Ga./Creekside), who is a monster defensive back.


10. Alabama, 3 ESPN 150 commits
Talk about meeting needs. Alabama is getting playmakers at wide receiver and needs them; D.J. Hall, Keith Brown and Matt Caddell are all seniors and Will Oakley and Nikita Stover are both juniors. Athlete prospect Burton Scott (Pritchard, Ala./Vigor) is going to be given a shot at receiver, and Destin Hood (Mobile, Ala./St. Paul's), Melvin Ray (Tallahassee, Fla./North Florida Christian) and Devonta Bolton (Norcross, Ga.) have huge upside to become playmakers.
OT Tyler Love (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) is our No. 1 rated tackle, and DE Courtney Upshaw (Eufaula, Ala.) will be the surprise defensive prospect out of this class in our opinion.
There are plenty of defensive ends in this class, but unless they move those guys down inside over the nose, the Crimson Tide need defensive tackle help and have no commitments yet.

Big things can come in small packages, and although the Gators don't have a lot of numbers, the quality is outstanding, so they are my bonus pick for the team who could shoot up the ranks come signing day. Florida is very young in the secondary right now, so it continues to add depth with our No. 1 ranked athlete prospect Will Hill (Jersey City, NJ/St. Peters Prep) and our No. 1 ranked safety in Dee Finley (Auburn, Ala.).
Defensive front help and cornerback additions will bolster depth, and RB Franklin Green (Savannah, Ga./Jenkins) is a huge area of need as the Gators have not been able to land a top-flight workhorse in any of the last three classes. If the Gators can somehow reel in RB Jamie Harper (Jacksonville, Fla./Trinity Christian), look out. This class could end up with just 15 overall players, but like USC last year, they will be good ones.
Others on the cusp: Michigan, UCLA.

Positive official visits crucial to signing recruits


Collegiate programs are allowed to bring a prospective student-athlete to their institution for an official visit once during the recruiting process. The recruit can take an official visit during their senior year of high school as long as they meet NCAA academic requirements.

Colleges can also provide accommodations and meals to the parents, but no transportation. If the recruit and parents drive together to campus for the visit, the recruit will be issued the mileage check, not the parents. If the family flies to the official visit, only the recruit's airfare will be taken care of by the institution.
Official visit strategies

The official visit is a crucial part of the recruiting strategy. College coaches go through a checklist of activities, presentations and appointments each recruit will partake during their 48 hours on campus. During the weekend, the recruit and parents (when applicable) will meet with academic counselors in their specific field of study and the athletic counselors who will deal with the athlete on a daily basis. Sometimes the academic appointments will include a meeting with a professor and, if possible, a classroom observation.

Recruits will be introduced to the support staff at some point during the visit. Team doctors, trainers, equipment personnel and the video staff are all a part of this group. The purpose of the support staff is to assure the athlete and parents that the recruit will be taken care of in terms of health, safety and athletic development.


The head coach and assistant coaches will take time during the visit to sell the recruit on how he will fit into their system and what an important role he will play if he chooses their institution. The staff also tries to convince the athlete they will help him develop, maximize his athletic abilities and prepare him for the NFL if he has that potential.
One of the common practices on an official visit is to take the recruits to on-campus athletic events. Unless the player visits during the season, most visits are in December and January, which usually limits the events to basketball since wrestling or hockey usually are of little interest to football recruits. As a coach, you only want to take a recruit to a basketball game if the team is good and the fan support is electrifying.


The one thing characteristic of a recruiting visit is the large amount of food consumed. Each recruit and his parents will not go away hungry, guaranteed. At least one of the two dinner meals (Friday or Saturday) will be a group meal with the recruits, parents, student host, coaches, coaches' families and support staff. The food will be of top quality and often at an off campus restaurant.


Selecting the right player host is a major key in landing a recruit. Most of the time coaches will pick out the player on their team that best matches up with the recruit's personality. If the host does a bad job selling the school, the coaching staff and the campus life, the recruit may walk away with an irreversible negative opinion.


The staff will coach up each host on what to say (and avoid saying) to the recruit. The staff will also have the host try to find out specific information from the prospect. This information might range from how serious the prospect really is about the school to what the competition is doing in recruiting.


It's usually smart to pick out a host who doesn't play the same position as the recruit, the reason being that they will probably end up competing with each other for the starting spot. It's smarter to select a host who plays a complementary position (e.g. quarterback and receiver) or a player from the same geographical area.


A common strategy used by college programs is to invite key recruits to campus when verbally committed recruits are also coming for their official visit. The committed recruits will spend the weekend trying to sway the non-committed ones to jump aboard and be part of the program. This sometimes works because the players do strike up a bond even though they are only together for two days.


The head coach will make a final hard sell to the recruit prior to him leaving campus at the end of the visit. Hopefully the recruit will walk away with a positive and comfortable feeling about the program, the coaching staff and the campus environment. A lot of hard work can go right down the drain if the official visit is a disaster.


In-season vs. postseason visits

There has been a lot of debate whether to bring a recruit on his official visit during the season. The positives are:

• The recruit sees the game day atmosphere.

• If visiting a northern school, the weather is usually better in the fall than winter.


• The recruit can see the team routine as they prepare for an opponent.The negatives are much more obvious than the positives:


• Coaches don't have as much time to spend with the recruit.


• There's not as much time to spend on academic and support staff appointments.


• Student hosts are more concerned about playing the game instead of entertaining the recruit.


• It can be a negative atmosphere if the team loses the game.


• High school coaches normally do not like their players to take college visits during the season. You don't want bad feelings between the high school and college coaches.


• The visit usually doesn't end up being a full 48 hours since the player can't come to the campus until after he plays his game Friday night or early Saturday morning.



• National signing day isn't until February, and therefore the newness of an in-season visit wears off by the time the recruit is ready to sign his name on the dotted line.


When it is all said and done, most college coaches prefer that the recruit visit after the regular season is over. They know how important the official visit is, and they really want to do a good job without any distractions. The recruiting game is tough enough and all college staffs want to make sure they cover the waterfront.

Have you heard anything either way on Terelle Pryor? I heard tOSU had a leg up on recruiting him, but now i guess texas is making a hard push by having vince young to try to recruit him as well. The basic premise of V.Y. recruiting him is along the lines of look what mack brown did for me, he can do it for you too.

I really hope we get him, but i can easily see him going to texas because colt mcCoy dosen't seem to be progressing as they want him too.

Scout.com reported Thursday that OSU received a verbal commitment from middle linebacker Etienne Sabino out of Dr. Michael M. Krop High School in Miami, Fla. Scout.com ranks him as the fourth-best inside linebacker prospect in the country. Rivals.com has him at No. 1. Sabino will graduate in time to participate in spring practice. . . . Linebacker James Laurinaitis is a finalist for the Butkus Award, which recognizes the best collegiate player at his position
 
Haha..posted at same time...gettin his teammate Travis Howard is huge too...nice to have some inroads into a high school area in Dade County..

Also, Spielman's dad is OL coach at their High school.
