While there are unproven elements on both lines, to say nothing of new head coach Rich Stubler, the improvement at the most important position on the field is enough to start the Argos in top spot.

</TD><TD vAlign=center width=433 bgColor=#fff7ef>While the ceiling for the Lions isn't quite as high now that Dave Dickenson is in Calgary, the QB duo of Buck Pierce and Jarious Jackson has enjoyed enough success in recent seasons to know that the Lions can still win consistently and, with more impact players on defence than any other team in the league, the Leos are still the class of the West.

New head coach Marc Trestman doesn't have CFL experience, so there is a learning curve that will have to be taken into account, but GM Jim Popp will see to it that Trestman will have the talent on hand to contend.

However, the last line of defence isn't as imposing and, in the pass-happy CFL, the secondary plays a major part of any team's success so the Bombers need internal improvement in that area before they are going to be viable Grey Cup contenders.

</TD><TD vAlign=center width=433 bgColor=#fff7ef>Bringing in Dave Dickenson to complement Henry Burris gives the Stampeders the league's most potent pair of quarterbacks, but the problem for new Stamps head coach John Hufnagel is that his two best players can't be on the field at the same time. So, have no doubt that the Stamps will be able to score, no matter who is running the offence, but the defence needs some big performances from newcomers if Calgary is going to contend.

After a couple of seasons outside the playoffs, the Eskimos need to show improvement in order to re-claim a position that had, previously, been an annual rite.

Maybe all the pieces will fall together, with Marcus Crandell turning back the clock and a hopefully healthy Matt Dominguez adding some punch to the offence, but new head coach Ken Miller is going to need his defence to rise up if a Grey Cup repeat is going to be possible.
