Maryland Coach Randy Edsall declined to address his team’s quarterback situation during Tuesday’s news conference, vowing to not release an update on C.J. Brown’s
sprained left wrist until Saturday morning ahead of that day’s Big Ten home opener vs. Ohio State.
There were no significant changes to the team’s depth chart following the
37-15 win over Indiana on Saturday. Brown, who left the game at halftime with the injury, is still listed ahead of backup Caleb Rowe. But Edsall did reaffirm his confidence in Rowe, who looked sharp in the second half against the Hoosiers. He finished 12-of-18 passing for 198 yards and two touchdowns.
“I’m very proud of Caleb, fulfilling the role of being a backup quarterback and being ready and coming in and being productive when his number is called,” Edsall said.
It was a turnaround of sorts for Rowe, who struggled at times in the season opener
against James Madison when he replaced Brown in the second half after Maryland built a comfortable lead. Rowe looked confident and in command on Saturday, and took his chances with a number of throws downfield. He had a quick release (he took just one sack and completed a number of short throws), and both of his touchdowns were big plays. He had a 36-yard touchdown pass to Ross on a swing, then completed the afternoon with a 30-yard touchdown strike to freshman Juwann Winfree.
Whether Brown’s wrist would be able to hold up just seven days after it was injured is purely speculation, but Rowe is the latest player who may have to step in and fill a void for a team that is piling up injuries.
“I think we’ve been blessed to have that happen at a number of positions this year, with guys,” Edsall said. “Very proud of Caleb for staying engaged and being ready and knowing that when his number was called he came in and did the job that he was expected to do.”
