Cleveland Browns vs. Denver Broncos
Monday, December 2, 2024 at 8:15 p.m. ET at Empower Field at Mile High

Key Trend

Under Kevin Stefanski, who has been their head coach sine 2021, the Browns are winless in games against opponents outside of their division that followed one in which they defeated a team inside their division.

This year, their second-to-worst loss came in this very sort of let-down situation.

After they upset AFC North rival Baltimore, they lost by 17 points at home to the Chargers.

The most plausible explanation for this trend is that they invest a lot of emotion in their matchups against division rivals.

It is a classic rule of thumb for bettors to bet against teams that are coming off an emotional victory because they are primed to suffer a let-down in their following game.

Some coaches prepare their teams better for this sort of situation, so some do a good job of avoiding the let-down. Cleveland's coach is evidently not one of those coaches.

Cleveland's Defense on the Road

Last year, the Browns' defense was extremely unusual.

It allowed the fewest points per game at home but the most points per game on the road.

Cleveland was the only team to allow more than 30 points per road game.

This tremendous disparity, because it is so unique, must remain meaningful even though this season is a new season.

This season, Cleveland has a measurably worse defense overall.

It still has pass rusher Myles Garrett, so its secondary is clearly the reason for its decline in pass defense.

The Browns are also significantly worse against the run.

One might, therefore, find it confusing that they are allowing fewer points on the road than they did last year.

But a look at their schedule provides an explanation.

This season, their road games have been particularly easy.

Whereas they have had to face the Bengals, Ravens, and Chargers at home, they got to face the lowly Jaguars and Raiders on the road.

While their defense limited the Eagles to 20 points in Philadelphia, the Eagles had no trouble amassing yards. They finished the game on Cleveland's twelve yard-line and had a field goal attempt blocked.

In the Browns' other road game, they allowed 34 points to Washington.

A strong offense, therefore, has a particularly strong outlook when its team gets to play the Browns at home.

The Rise of Bo Nix

Whereas the Browns' defense could, on the road, handle Jacksonville with its inept offensive coordinator and Vegas with its backup-caliber quarterbacks, Denver's offense is looking extremely dangerous, as it is well-coached and led by a solid quarterback.

Denver's quarterback Bo Nix is enjoying a tremendous development in his rookie season.

Long gone are the days where Nix's head coach would protect him by having him play conservatively.

Whereas Nix averaged 4.8 YPA in September, he is averaging 7.4 YPA in November.

Nix is comfortable throwing to several different targets, but he has established a rapport especially with Courtland Sutton, who, among other things, is a great end zone target with his height at 6-4.

Sutton enters Monday's game having accumulated 70 or more receiving yards in each of his last five games.

Fellow wide receiver Devaughn Vele, for his current progression, is also worth highlighting.

Their quarterback has been especially hot in his last three games in which he was a blocked field goal attempt away from upsetting the then-undefeated Chiefs in Kansas City and in which he subsequently led his team to double-digit wins over the Falcons and Raiders, respectively.

Denver has, in its last two games, scored 38 points against Atlanta and 29 points in Las Vegas, where the Broncos have struggled historically.

Denver's Elite Defense

Whereas Nix-led Denver, especially at home, should be expected to score a lot of points, Cleveland's offense is going to struggle.

Yes, Jameis Winston represents an upgrade at quarterback over the anemic Deshaun Watson. But that isn't saying much.

Winston looked great against what has been an awful Ravens secondary that was very banged-up and against New Orleans' 30th-ranked pass defense.

However, his passer rating was abysmal against tough competition: it was 50.5 against the Chargers and 76 against the Steelers.

Whereas the Steelers rank 17th in pass defense and the Chargers rank tenth in the category, Denver's pass defense ranks ninth.

The Broncos feature lockdown cornerback Patrick Surtain, who should add to his ninth-best interception total against interception-prone Winston.

Led by Nik Bonitto's ten sacks, Denver also has one of the best pass rushes, one that has a terrific outlook against a Cleveland team that allows the most sacks per game.

Takeaway

Denver's offense will thrive at home against Cleveland's declined defense, which is struggling both against the run and the pass, as evident in its last road game, when it gave up 35 points to a Saints team that was missing its top two wide receivers.

Meanwhile, the Browns will be held back by Jameis Winston, who struggles against good defenses, and by their weak rush attack, which is limited by Nick Chubb's continued post-injury poor form — Chubb is averaging three YPC.

Cleveland, on the road and following its win over a division rival, is in a terrible spot, whereas Denver head coach Sean Payton's teams have always been solid in primetime games and the Broncos match up excellently against the Browns.

Best Bet: Broncos -5.5 at -110 with Bet365

I’m not sure the spot so bad considering browns had the mini bye after beating Pitt. I dunno, my ass still hurts from betting against donks last week and raiders ending the game 3 inches short of the cover!! My 1st thought tho Is I have no doubt Browns a better team with Winston, he seems to have really good chemistry with juedy, I think they still have players on d. I havnt really looked into nfl at all but for me it dog or pass but like I said I just got burnt playing against donks. Not sure if my belief in cle is misguided or not? I also think Chubb is starting to look a bit more like his old self off the injury.

I'll be interested to see how well Surtain does in covering Jeudy. These guys practiced together for years, I'd assume they're pretty familiar with how the other operates.

Good point. Maybe this a game Tillman shows back up? For a minute there he was having some success till juedy took over. Or do we just play Njoku? Bowers killed donks the 1st meeting, obviously they adjusted gm 2 but not sane familiarity here.

They got pounded by Miami after bye week following a win over Bengals.

Was the rapist still playing qb? Remember right or wrong I have a with rapist opinion and after rapist opinion on browns that is vastly more optimistic now. You confusing me tho, they got smashed by saints with Winston after their bye right? That game was weird tho, Winston put up huge numbers yet they only scored 14, dunno what to make of that game? It almost scared me off browns last week.

Fuck bro, this game not til Monday! There like 100 ncaa hoops, fb, and nfl games before i gotta worry bout this shit!!! You and your early articles fuck me up sometimes. Let’s worry bout making it thru weekend with some money before Monday! 😂

It tough to find a browns prop I like with the shadow of Sertain hanging over juedy who been the top target by far since Winston took over. I’d say maybe this a Tillman game but I’ve lost on him so many times now I’m not sure I can do it. Like Njoku but think they made his line pretty good/tough to play over. On the other side I freaking love Vele, they are way short with his number imo, right now that my favorite play on this game, Vele ov 34.5 or whatever it is, and def a alt prop of 50+ paying 2-1!!

Tillman didn't clear concussion so he's already been ruled out. Really like Njoku in this one as well. Also think Vele has value tonight.

Which rapist? In 2016, Winston was accused of rape and Florida State University paid out $950,000.

The one who had to pay off 25 girls and was the worst contract in history. Forgot bout Winston, only remember the crab leg incident with him. Often times I side with athlete on these cases, Kobe I believed him, in some cases just don’t get why rape a chick when you could toss her out the room and bring another one in?!? Especially in Kobe case, nba players have a line of skanks trying to smash a star, prob trying to get pregnant! It’s tough to know who telling truth, Watson case a bit different but I wouldn’t still be giving him a hard time if he actually went to cle and played like he did before all that, I never got the impression he cared tho, he was just happy to get th 💰 and his personality just wasn’t appealing, I don’t think he ever had the respect of that locker room, I dunno which reason but it doesn’t matter, fact is ever since they signed him browns been a better team when he wasn’t on the field. It helps I find Winston incredibly likable also and I do think he has the respect of the locker room, that is 50% of being a qb, the guys have to respect and believe in you or it will never work!

Agree with all this, it's just that no one seems to know about Winston's behavior at FSU.

Now that you brought it up I do remember: I hardly remember what happened yesterday sometimes till someone jolts my memory: drugs, lol. But I remember certain angles that only come up few times a year my whole life! Lol

You got good number, I actually lean Browns now that they up to 6.5, hoping for a cheap +7 but this turned into a prop game I’m pretty invested so just hope gams script plays favorable for me. Donks getting an early lead wouldn’t hurt my feelings long as they throw for it!

would greatly appreciate an early lead. six of 11 teams browns have faced scored 1Q TD and went 6-0 su and ats. the other five scored zero 1Q went 2-3 su and 1-4 ats

broncos tend to wait 2Q before they start scoring. toward the bottom of the league 1Q but toward the top of the league scoring 2Q

one thing I noticed for fantasy - only the bears have given up more sacks than browns. winston gets sacked a lot but 8.7 ypa vs blitz rank 7th NFL with 3:0 td/int ratio so he kinda does it on his own terms so there's that

however "from a fantasy perspective" real life is where the fun stops: in their 3 su wins they only allowed 2 or fewer sacks. sacked more than twice in a game browns 0-8 (1-7 ats)

that's why I'm ridin w you homie broncos 44 sacks lead the nfl anyway cheers bro excellent writeup as always 💪

It’s so hard to know if browns oline the cause or it was that clown Watson holding the ball to long which he did a lot! I gotta believe at least 30-40% the sacks were on him. Browns are so tough to cap right now I really love the donks wr Vele prop, anything less than 40 feels crazy short to me, browns d hasn’t traveled well. Gotta assume Browns have to pass to move ball but juedy number getting respect and imagine he see a lot a Sertain which prb not good. My thinking is backs and te for Browns get a lot of targets. Ford rec number only 12.5, I think he hits that. I’m far more invested in props than a side tonight, I just don’t know what kind of effort we get from browns, last week it was obvious we get everything they had, but do they care as much tonight? If you can get 7 think ya gotta take the points but i been burnt several times against Denver. Most recently raiders sorry asses ending the game 3 inches from a covering score! I’d think back door open here long as Winston can avoid throwing bad picks, take the check downs and drive ball methodically would help the d also. Like I said I like the props I posted in prop thread more than side.

Tillman didn't clear concussion so he's already been ruled out. Really like Njoku in this one as well. Also think Vele has value tonight.

I thought they came crazy short w Vele number. I lost 3 yards not grabbing over night but I was still perfectly good w 37.5, more annoying was 50+ was 2-1 last night, had to play 60+ to get that today. I played him to score a td also, he hasn’t been getting in end zone but gotta think only a matter of time. +300 felt like solid value and I backed it up with Sutton +150, nix throwing a td to one of them! Glad Tillman out cause he has been costing me a bet damn near every week while juedy goes off, don’t see it for juedy here especially without Tillman he getting the Sertain treatment. I like Njoku but didn’t think they were short with his number so I went alt 60+ think paid around +175, figure he either goes off or doesn’t! Love ford ov 12.5 rec, just don’t think Chubb gonna be 100% til next year, he not a great pass catcher anyways, ford gets most that work, donks have allowed RBs to get a pretty good about of rec yards and if browns trailing late this should hit easy.,

I'm actually kind of excited to see this game. Bo Nix has improved greatly from his first couple of games, and Jameis brings the volatility that is always a thrill show. But there's also enough defensive stars in this one to make the total tough to cap.

This game a super hard cap. The only reason im fairly confident in the props on few guys cause I think for most part running be tough and they came short with a few numbers. I’d love to be on browns but who knows what we get? Their numbers are totally skewed and basically worthless since I think they a completely different team on both sides the ball without Watson and we don’t have that much a sample with Winston yet, I know the d hasn’t been traveling well tho and that showed up w Winston vs saints. That was an odd game also cause Winston threw all over them, didn’t turn it over yet somehow they only scored 14?!?!? Still confused by that one! I think Winston can throw on these guys I just think it gonna have to be to te’s and running backs, gotta limit the amount of shots to juedy. I think brown coach is pretty solid when it comes to offense, the path to success here imo is throwing on early downs for 5-6 yards to ford or the te’s which should open the playbook up on 2nd and short. If they come out banging Chubb into a brick wall on early downs and put Browns in known passing situations it could get ugly. If you made me play it think it be browns (if ya can get a cheap +7 and over).
