I don’t know about other places but the last few LSU contracts all have that provision, including Kelly’s. Basically the buyout is paid in monthly installments over a certain period of time, their new monthly salary offsets whatever that monthly buyout amount is, and the coach is required to make an effort to get a job.
That probably explains why so many coaches go straight to a media gig, to get some time off while still “working” and collecting the buyout. And it also explains why they may settle for a smaller amount if it’s a lump sum payment up front.

He’ll be coaching again shortly in some capacity because a) he’s an idiot who probably blew through a large chunk of the buyout without sensibly investing any of it and b) he is about to pay half of the buyout to his ex wife.

He's one of the most unlikeable coaches out there. There are probably many fan bases hoping he doesn't wind up at their school.

He got divorced after the championship season and before the picture above was taken, but Louisiana is a community property state. The state supreme court recently ruled that since he signed his extension prior to the divorce the ex is entitled to half of the buyout.
They also noted in the ruling that he and his attorneys knew what happened because they subsequently went back to LSU and tried to get the date of the extension changed from the actual effective date when he signed it to a date after the divorce was official.

The next coach check list should require the coach not to be a poon hound. Any guesses on who that would eliminate? I’m partly joking and I refuse to go too far back but we certainly have a trend in place regarding our ex coaches and their bedroom distractions. I’ll leave it at that.

As promised, three days in and it’s already a shit show.
Today the governor confirmed Woodward will not make the next hire, citing the large contracts/buyouts at A&M and now LSU. There has been speculation that once the new president is named they would bring in a new AD, so this probably confirms it.
He also took shots at the mega contracts, the landscape in general, and agents.
Needless to say a lot of people now think this eliminates LSU from consideration of the top candidates.

How anyone cant see the evolution of Lane Kiffin and want him as their guy boggles the mind. I’ll go on record saying LSU needs to make every effort to get him when/if the biggest of pipe dreams is closed down by Mrs. Terry. I thought his explanation of the other conferences (Big Ten) was very classy. This will be the longest 2.5 months ever. And I fully expect we will once again botch the hire as we have done 3 times in a row. With that said, Im grateful we at least get a chance to make a hire vs wading through additional years of poor acting and fake dismay by BK. YES WE ARE SPOILED. Deal with it.

Seems like getting sober made him both a better coach and a better person. Kudos to Lane. Really enjoy his interviews/press conferences now (they've always been fun, but you're right, he comes off as classy and likeable and a legit leader now and he's still funny). Don't know that you get him to BR but agree he is target #1. Think Sumrall more likely and frankly believe he'd be a great hire.

Ummm zero chance. The negative recruiting alone from the email contents cant be overcome. Thats just the tip of the iceberg.
As I mentioned from the beginning politics will muddy this thing. Big donors have already threatened the Governor if he touches Sumrall they will see to it he isn't reelected so scratch him off as well. They cant keep him at Tulane but they can prevent him from being considered at LSU. So many egos such a small state. Others are saying if the right coach is hired it will win Landry another term. Id prefer a home run hire and a new governor. Politics ruin everything around here. Only Chicago and DC can compare to the corruption manifested in this damn state.

Gotta say, I think that's a huge mistake with Sumrall. I'm really interested: other than Kiffin (and Saban which everyone knows isn't happening), who would be a home run hire - Drink, Franklin?
