Milwaukee Brewers vs. St. Louis Cardinals
Friday, August 12, 2022 at 8:15 p.m. ET at Busch Stadium in St. Louis

Who Starts for Milwaukee?

Milwaukee starts Eric Lauer today.

Based on his ERA, Lauer seems to be a pretty good pitcher

But his 3.59 ERA masks an FIP (like ERA but factors out fielding) that is 0.99 higher.

He is benefitting from an opposing BABIP (batting average of balls in play) that is fortunately low while he yields hard contact at a high rate.

Lauer vs. Cardinal Batters

When facing Lauer, five different Cardinal batters have an OPS (on-base plus slugging) of .800 or even much higher.

Watch out for: Nolan Arenado, Paul Goldschmidt, Albert Pujols, Dylan Carlson, and Paul DeJong.

One should expect Cardinal batters to thrive against Lauer because they match up well against him given the pitches that he throws and given the fact that he's a lefty.

Primarily, Lauer throws a fastball, slider, and curveball.

These three pitches make up over 85 percent of his arsenal.

St. Louis ranks seventh in slugging against these pitches from lefties.

Who Starts for St. Louis?

Recent arrival to the team Jordan Montgomery starts for St. Louis.

Montgomery is a versatile pitcher.

He generates a lot of whiffs with his curveball and changeup, both of which he plays well off his fastest pitches by generating an unusually intense change of pace.

Moreover, he induces a rather even mixture of fly balls and ground balls.

Montgomery vs. Brewer Batters

Typically, Milwaukee is not well-equipped to succeed against left-handed pitchers.

Montgomery presents no exception as Brewer batters match up poorly against him.

By far, his most frequent pitches are his sinker, changeup, and curveball.

Milwaukee ranks 29th in slugging against his favorite pitches from lefties.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Colorado Rockies
Friday, August 12, 2022 at 8:40 p.m. ET at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado

Who Starts for Arizona?

Zach Davies starts for Arizona.

It is true that Davies has been unprofitable for bettors to back, but he's suffered from tough competition.

Arizona has lost every road game in which Davies started when its opponent was a winning team -- those five opponents were Cleveland, San Diego, the Dodgers, St. Louis, and the Mets.

Colorado, however, is far from a winning team, and is therefore the type of team that Davies can succeed against outside of Arizona.

Davies vs. Rockie Batters

Mostly, Davies throws a sinker and changeup.

These two pitches make up over 85 percent of his arsenal.

Tonight, Davies merits optimism particularly because Rockie batters match up poorly against him.

Despite regularly playing in baseball's most hitters-friendly ballpark, they rank below-average in slugging against his favorite pitches from righties.

Davies has already been solid against Colorado this year: he's shut them out in 11.1 innings so far.

Pertinently to my favorite play for this game, he has a strong history in rematches, as evident in his success in June against Cincinnati.

Who Starts for Colorado?

Antonio Senzatela starts for Colorado tonight.

Senzatela looks unreliable tonight because Arizona ranks ninth in slugging against his favorite pitches from righties.

Minnesota Twins vs. Los Angeles Angels.
Friday, August 12, 2022 at 9:38 p.m. ET at Angel Stadium in Anaheim

Who Starts for Minnesota?

The Twins start Tyler Mahle tonight.

After surrendering two home runs in his last start, Mahle finds himself in a strong bounce-back spot tonight.

When he allowed two home runs to the Cubs, he shut out the Giants over 6.2 innings in his following start.

Most recently, he allowed two earned runs against Baltimore after allowing two home runs in his preceding start to the Cards.

Tonight, Mahle looks particularly strong because the Angels rank 26th in slugging against his favorite pitches from righties.

Who Starts for the Angels?

Patrick Sandoval starts for L.A. tonight.

Minnesota is a rather ideal opponent for Sandoval because it relies heavily on hitting home runs -- it ranks eighth in homers per game.

Sandoval excels at avoiding home runs, of which he allows 0.38 per nine innings.

Plus, the Twins rank 20th in slugging against his nice variety of favorite pitches from lefties.

Love the pitching matchup for cards today, I think Montgomery better than Lauer plus lefty lefty should be huge advantage cards. I parlayed them with mahle ov 6.5 k’s, he should tan close to dd vs laa crappy lineup.
