NEW YORK, April 17, 2007 – NBA referee Joey Crawford has been indefinitely suspended for improper conduct toward Tim Duncan during the San Antonio Spurs at Dallas Mavericks game on April 15, it was announced today by NBA Commissioner David Stern. The conduct included Crawford's assessment of a second technical foul and ejection of Duncan following laughter by the player while he was seated on the bench, and inappropriate comments made to Duncan during the game. Crawford's suspension will cover at least the remainder of the 2006-07 season, including the NBA Playoffs and Finals.

"Joey Crawford's handling of this situation failed to meet the standards of professionalism and game management we expect of NBA referees," said Stern. "Especially in light of similar prior acts by this official, a significant suspension is warranted. Although Joey is consistently rated as one of our top referees, he must be held accountable for his actions on the floor, and we will have further discussions with him following the season to be sure he understands his responsibilities."

The incidents occurred with 1:04 remaining in the third period of the Mavericks 91-86 win over the Spurs on Sunday, April 8 at American Airlines Center.

Gotta hand it to Stern - the guy doesnt take shit from anyone

In the NBA moreso than any other league though it seems that the officials are attention whores...good to see one of them put back in thier place

Now if someone can just do something about getting that Violet Palmer fired, id be willing to call it progress...

I almost never say this about a commissioner, but good for him. It was obvious this guy needed to be reminded he's not bigger than the game. Maybe a year out of reffing the playoffs will humble him a bit.

this is great news for all of us. these crooked zebras will have to think twice about changing the results of games, so the better team will have a better chance.

I just saw that, Kash.

Stern was p*ssed, you could tell it. It almost sounds like Crawford told him to go f**k himself and the synthetic basketball he rode in on.

It really comes off like Stern doesn't like this guy.

Pecking around on the Internet it seems they average around $130K a year, some less, some more depending on experience whatnot.

NBA Suspends Joe Crawford Indefinately

All I will say is David Stern is the best commissioner in all of sports. I may or may not agree with the length of all the suspensions the league hands out but suspending Joe Crawford indefinately was the right move. Of course, it's likely we will never know what Crawford's true motivation was this past Sunday when he tossed Duncan for laughing or maybe showing him up while sitting on the bench. All right one T fine but a second which leads to ejecting the Spurs superstar in a meaningful game is bull shit. Crawford officiates as if he's above the law. Well Stern reinforced NBA law by sitting this asshole down. The other day when this happening I really thought Crawford might have a bet on the game. I still do. This is the first time in my life where I was watching a game and can truly make a case and believe that an official had a stake in the outcome. Yesterday Duncan was quoted saying he believes Crawford has a personal vendetta against him. That maybe true but if you do you need to find better ways to levy technical fouls vs. Duncan than for laughing. All in all this jerk likely cost me $100 which I really don't care about either way. I was fortunate enough not to bet this game really heavy as the opening line of Dal -1 really made me think twice.

Anyways, I'm thrilled to know Joe Crawford didn't make the playoffs this year. As far as I'm concerned Joe Crawford should be sent down to the NBDL to start the 2007-2008 regular season. Perhaps he can make it back up to the pros but it should be a long up hill trek.

I'm tired of officials fucking things up and that's why I've always been a huge supporter of instant replay. The biggest problem with replay is the same officials who get the call wrong get another chance to call it wrong after they review it. It's amazing how many times these guys can't even admit they were wrong when they look at the replay. It's time that these old timers get the heave ho and bring in new young blood with 20/20 vision.

Good luck

Stern is crooked as much as his agent Bettman, if not more.

What he did was finally a good decision, but you can't say last year's finals didn't have anything to do with Stern.

Btw, a topic already exists about this matter.

Last years finals had nothing to do with STern. I don't know where you're going with that? Dirk missed the free throws. Stern didn't shoot them. The Mavs choked. Stern wasn't playing. The better team lost the series but the best team doesn't always win.

Dallas may once again be the best team. San Antonio is getting all the press but we shall see. The Western Conference playoffs are going to be fantastic. Especially the second and third rounds. Houston/ Dallas could have upset city written all over it. Most won't think so but Yao and T-Mac are more than capable of getting it done.

I want the Spurs because I bought them to win it all at the beginning of the season at 4.5:1. I thought I was buying a good number. I was wrong. In fact real wrong. We shall see but SA has as good a chance as anyone to win.

Last years Finals was many factors:

One, Dallas overconfidence after 2.75 games

Two, Dwayne Wade receiving calls that were ridiculous

Three, Miami playing great defense in the last 2-3 games.

Theres no doubt Wade was treated like Charmin in that series but even at that Dallas shoulda been up 3-0 after three games. Better team but not not the 'right' team last year.

As far as Stern, I personally was referring to the Cleveland Cavaliers playoff run which was one of the most crooked since the Chicago Bulls heyday. Never seen so many Phantom Fouls. Even Dwayne Wade was blushing ;)

Mavs in 4 maybe 5 in forst round
Spurs in 5 in first round
Suns in 5 in forst round
Houston in 6 in first round

Dallas in 6..prolly 7 second round
Spurs in 6 in second round

WC finals go 7..and its a toss-up.
