Box Scores, Misleading Finals, Recaps, Bad Beats, etc

Goodbye to Romance College Football
I'll probably get into some box scores and post some things tomorrow.

A few bad beats I experienced...nothing like withstanding 2 defensive TDs, 3 missed FGs and clinging to an under 46 in the Mich-Fl game, which with just under 2m left still had potential of hitting 26-17 when Michigan sack/fumbled Zaire in the EZ for a 3rd def TD in the game with just 1:38 left and busted the under.

An under 30 2nd half Cal-UNC play was looking good as the first score occurred with under 5m left in the 3rd. Then NC ret'd an INT to the 4 for another quick score. Still 16 pts under the total, Cal scored 2 TDs on 12 and 11 play drives when NC took over at their own 25 with 1:56 left. NC got into the RZ on a 4th and 10 conversion then Cal's D philosophy appeared to just hold receivers and get penalized rather than allowing any potential catches. After two penalties NC was at the 1 with :01 left when the QB ran it in as time expired blowing the under.

Troy and Boise each scored a non-offensive TD and defenses dominated the 24-13 game. If you had Troy at +11, which was the closing number where I shop, then good. Unfortunately my number was 10.5 when I got in. Seeing it close at 11 at kickoff and knowing I had 10.5 I think "well shit, would suck to lose by 11 now". Troy was covering for the vast majority of the game. Troy had stopped Boise 3x on 4th and short, but the Troy O kept putting their D in bad positions and eventually the D failed. Boise got ahead of the 10.5 pt spread with just 2:12 left and my worst fears were realized 24-13.

I'm sure there were some other bad beats, specifically the LV game (Lamar Jackson has his second highest yardage total in his career and they win by 7) - FSU trailing just 7-10 imploding with blk'd punt, KO fumble, INT, INT - Auburn missing 2 FGs coming up 1 pt short of covering (Carlson rarely misses)...probably others I'm not thinking of.

ACC

NC St had a 504-246 TY, 99-50 plays, 29-12 FD, 89-31 (2.5-1.5) RY, 415-215 (70-58%) PY, advantages over SCarolina. Not only did SC return the opening KO for a TD, they also benefited from scoring drives of just 40 and 13 yards following NC ST turnovers. Just 22 yards were gained on their final 5 drives of the game (6th possession was the kneel down) after having built a 35-21 lead while the Pack gained 154y on their final 5 drives being SOD at the SC 31 and 10 yard lines. Bentley was 5 of 7 on 3rd down in the first half either rushing or passing to sustain drives. SC did not convert a single 3rd down in the 2nd half (for the game 3rd down fairly even with NC St 45-42%). NC St lost 2 TOs and was sacked 4x. SC lost 1 TO and was sacked twice. SC registered 11 TFL to NC St's 7.

Virginia had just 354-240 TY, 72-54 plays, 19-12 FD, edges. W&M out rushed them 168-92 (4.1-2.9). 14-0 UVA at HT with W&M crossing midfield just once. It was only 21-10 late 4th qrt when UVA got a 7p 25y drive for TD after an INT. Benkert played the entire game for Cavs and was sacked 3x. Cavs also allowed 9 TFL.

Duke scored on their first 6 possessions and also got a pick-six and safety in that time to lead 47-7 at HT. NC Central's only TD was an 81y rush TD, they would have just 77y on their other 48 plays. Duke 524-158 TY, 81-49 plays, 30-8 FD, 243-64 (5.2-2.1) RY, 281-94 PY, 43-17% 3rd down.

Louisville fumbled a the Purdue 1, had a 1st and 10 at the 15 but kicked 23y FG, fumbled again at the Purdue 1 (after Pur fum KO) and ended the first half at the Pur 14 without any time for a FG att. In the 1st H LV had 283-178 yard and 19-11 minute TOP edges, but trailed 10-14. In the 2nd H after starting a drive at the 22 following a punt ret they settled for a 32y FG, missed a 2pt try on a later TD, kicked another short FG of 30y after having a 1st and goal at the 8. LV had 9 false start penalties. Purdue threw 3 INTs and had a FG blk'd.

More later...

For as bad as FSU crumbled in the 2nd half vs Bama, that score could've gotten much worse. Tide started hot with the first 3 drives penetrating Nole territory 9-50 (miss FG), 9-44 (made 35y FG) and 5-85 (53y TD) for a 10-7 lead, but then their next 4 drives did not cross midfield only accumulating 32y in the process after that Bama blk'd a punt, but couldn't move the ball had to settle for a 25y FG, got an 11y TD drive following FSU fumbling the ensuing KO, missed a FG after getting an INT and only moving the ball 18y and following another INT lost 3 yards and had to punt. While FSU couldn't run 40y 1.5 ypc, they passed for 210y 19 of 33 57% 6.4 per att to Bama's 96y 10 of 18 55% 5.3 per att. Bama rushed for 173 (4.1). FSU 31% 3rd down to Bama's 19%. FSU lost 3 turnovers. FSU had their moments of futility as well, started a drive on A31, but had to punt and also had a FG blk'd before half. Bama Dion-Hamilton had 3.5 TFL. Francois suffered what looks like a serious knee injury with no statement on it's severity.

Pitt jumped out to a 21-0 lead scoring on 3 of 4 drives in the first half while YSU could only muster a missed FG. HT yardage was 239-110 for Pitt. The opposite was true in the second half. Pitt O struggled to stay on the field, while YSU got going. A big moment of the game was a huge Pitt punt return down to the Y 4, but 2 rushes and a sack forced a 28y FG which was missed. 21-7 early 4th qrt at this point. YSU would go 9-80 for a TD, then after a sack fumble, got the ball back and scored on a 42y pass to a wide open receiver to tie the game 21-21. Pitt drove 11p 55y, but missed their 2nd FG of the 2nd half. Pitt converted 3rd down twice in OT and went ahead 28-21, then after achieving a first down on their possess, YSU threw a 1st down INT in the EZ to end the game. Max Browne 17-24-140-TD-0, RB Ollison 22-91-2 TD leading receiver 5-35, Henderson 9 rush-77, 1rec-7. For YSU QB Wells 18-32-311-2-1, two RBs combined for 100y and they had two 100y receivers. YSU was only 36% to Pitts 56% 3rd down. YSU registered 3 sacks, Pitt 1.

Bethune-Cookman led 3-0 (12p-69y converted 4th down to extend drive) and it was just 3-3 (UM 11p-70y) at the end of the 1st qrt. UM scored 3 TD in the 2nd qrt, BCook had to settle for a 35y FG after reaching the UM 9 shortly before HT. UM fumbled away another scoring chance from BCook RZ just before HT. UM led 24-6 and had a 320-127 yard edge. Full game 550-350 TY, 65-69 plays, 317-121 RY, 233-229 PY. Rosier 17-28-217-3-0 and added 41 rushing (4 att). Walton 16-148 (9.3) and Homer 11-103 (9.4). WR Richards DNP, 10 different receivers caught a pass. Miami only got 1 sack on 39 BCook pass att.

The bad news for UNC is that Brandon Harris started. The good news is they may not have to see him again. Both QBs played in the 1st half. Cal was able to take a 7-0 lead on their 3rd drive. Keyed by a Carter 47y rush, NC was able to tie 7-7. After a fumble, Call missed a FG on a short field, NC then took the lead with a FG 10-7. NC drove again 10p 53y to take a 17-7 lead. A key moment happened shortly before HT, Cal misfired on 3rd and 12 at their own 18, but a targeting penalty gave them a FD and they hit a 67y TD the next play. 17-14. Harris was leading a 2 minute drive and got to the C32, but threw an INT with :11 left. Another Harris INT in the 3rd had him on the bench for the rest of the game. 3rd qrt NC missed a 45y FG and Cal got a 54y TD pass on 3rd and 6 for the lead 21-17. Teams exchanged INTs and NC ret'd theirs to the C4 and got a TD 2 plays later and the 24-21 Tarheel lead. Cal went 11-75y TD and then after NC was SOD at the C30, Bears went 11-75y again keyed by a 43y run for the 35-24 lead. Aided by some penalties and a 4th and long conversion, NC was able to score the final TD with :00 left and the 35-30 Cal win. Cal 469-440 TY, 363-221 PY (63-57%). NC outrushed them 219-106 (4.9-3 ypc) and lost 3 TOs to Cal's 2.

Despite still being 41-7, the Auburn-Ga Southern final score doesn't justify the complete dismantling that game was. 535-78 in total yards and 25-8 in first downs. Ga Southern didn't get a first down until its seventh offensive drive of the game, and the only points scored were off a fumble returned for a TD. Auburn had three turnovers and two missed field goals in the first half. Auburn's defensive line is nasty.

Also, Colorado-Colorado State. CSU got punched in the mouth out of the gate and it had the potential to look ugly, but the rebounded nicely to make it a game. Had two TDs taken off the board on the same drive in the 3Q on a terrible offensive PI flag and a questionable personal foul call. Next drive had a 33-yard first down completion at the CU 15 called back from an absolutely bullshit offensive pass interference call (worse PI call than the previously mentioned one). Two drives later, another nice long first down conversion for 38 yards to the CU 28, and they fumble the ball away. Despite all of this, still had a fighting chance to backdoor my +7.5 but CSU was picked in the end zone on a poor throw with a minute left.

AAC:

Tulane win 43-14 - 26-10 FD, 481-225 TY, 66-49 plays, 296-77 (5.8-3.5) RY, 185-148 (12.3-5.5 ypa). Looks like QB Banks (JC trans former Kan St) played the whole way until the final series of the game for Tulane hitting 66% completions with 3 passing TDs and leading in rushing on 16-69. Grambling had 2 FD in the first half.

SMU 58-14 - 25-15 FD, 465-219 TY, 71-66 plays, 243-75 (5.1-2.1) RY, 222-144 (52-51%). PY Hicks just 9-19-112-2-0, Peavey 3-3-110-1-0 (72y TD pass 4th qrt). Top 3 RBs combined for 188. SMU scored twice on D (pick-six and fumble in EZ).

James Madison racked up 614 TY on just 66 plays to ECU's 362 TY on 83 plays. JM ran 422 (9.6) to EC 70 (2.3) and was also an efficient 68% passing for 192 on 22 att compared to EC's 53% for 292 on 53 att. 8 of EC's 28 1st downs were by way of penalty. EC lost 4 TOs (3 INT) while JM lost 2. 1st qrt saw JM SOD from EC terr and miss a FG with just a 7-0 lead. EC would also miss a FG. 7-0 HT. After JM took a 14-0 lead on a 85y TD run Thomas Sirk entered for EC and led a 8p 44y drive but on 1st down was INT'd in EZ. JM gave it right back and EC cut it to 14-7 2 plays later. JM fumbled at EC 36, but EC was then SOD at JM 35. 21-7 end 3rd after a 10-79y JM TD drive. Another 80y TD run for JM was sandwiched between two EC SOD drives at the JM 20 and 4. JM got yet another big TD run right after EC was INT'd a the 19. 34-7. EC's other TD came with just :23 left. Sirk QB'd the entire 2nd half and did hit 60% for 210, but was INT'd twice. Minshew was just 7-18-82-0-1.

A second underwhelming game for Charlie Strong? Charlie says "We're going to get everyone's best because of what we have now, and where we're ranked and everyone has expectations." ?? Stony Brook actually led 7-0, 10-7 and tied it at 17-17 in the 4th qrt before USF pulled away by 14. SB's 1st TD was via a blk'd punt in the EZ. Their other TD was a 54y run. USF did register 5 sacks and 12 TFL. 21-14 FD, 339-229 TY, 81-70 plays, 186-137 (5.8-4.0 ypa), 153-92 (3.1-2.6 ypc) disappointing edges for USF.

Notre Dame had 606 yards and 8.2 ypp to Temple's 330 and 4.6 ypp. Irish ran wild for 422 (9.6) - 2 RBs plus the QB topping 100y, but only passed for 56% 184y on 30 att. ND missed 2 FGs, Temple 1. ND tacked on two late TDs on following a Temple fumble and a short field and then a 66y run to the 3 with a TD at 2:32 left for the 42-16 final. rFr Marchi started his first game of his career and hit 19-35-245-2-0.

I like doing it when I can. Typing out things from the box score or drive chart doesn't take much more time than just glancing over it without and if I type it I kind of remember more of it anyway. Happy to contribute and happy to read what others see in games I missed.

Yup I had AUburn team total..never again.

CUSA

Vandy started hot, Shurmur connected on his first 4 passes and 9 out of his first 10 as the Dores racked up 248y on the opening 4 drives (3 TD and missed FG). After their first drive of the 3rd qrt went 80y for another TD (73y Webb catch), Vandy went on cruise control gaining just 38y on their final 6 possessions. Shurmur QB’d entire game, Webb entire game up to final possession. MTSU on the other hand was able to drive into Vandy territory on their first two possesions, but were INT’d at the 32 and SOD at the 23. Two 2nd half possessions were SOD at V13 and V19. Vandy D had 10 TFL. VU edges 15-14, 367-215 TY, 63-57 plays, 296-166 PY (10.6-5.4 ypa), but only 71-49 (2-1.9 ypc) RY. Webb 24-49-TD-3rec-104-TD. MTSU WR James 10-112-TD.

North Texas was up 17-0 in the 1st qrt when they fumbled a punt setting Lamar up for a 4p 5y TD “drive”. It was 38-14 HT, 59-14 final. 31-15 FD, 668-266 TY (8.0-3.6 ypp), 84-74 plays, 436-86 (7.3-2.6 ypc) RY, 232-180 (71-49%)(9.7-4.4 ypa), 39-21 minute TOP. 668 yards was a school record. NT RB Jeffery Wilson has 176 at HT. Lamar is located in Beaumount Texas which saw epic flooding from Hurricane Harvey.

Western Kentucky won just 31-17. WKU scored first just into the 2nd qrt on a 16p 94y drive. It was 14-0 before QB White was sack/fumbled on the E32. A FG made it 17-0 HT. EK scored on their first 3 2nd half possessions and may’ve made it 4-for-4 when they ran out of time on their final 14p74y drive. Long drives were the rule here with WK having 3 DD play drives and EK having 4. WK QB White 20-31-264-1-0. EK QB Boyle 29-46-320-2-0. WK only ran for 100y (2.5), EK just 25 (1.1).

LaTech QB JMar Smith ws just 51% passing with 276y and 2 TD, but also ran for 10-72 (lost 2 fumbles). NW St led 7-0, then after LT made it 7-3 NW St fumbled the KO and LT ran it for TD and later ret’d a punt for TD. 24-10 LT led halftime, but just 1 of the 3 TDs was from the O. NW St was able to tie 24-24 in the 3rd aided by a Smith sack/lost fumble. LT missed FG but then got ahead for good late 3rd qrt 31-24. LT scored 3 4th qrt TDs to pull away. FD even at 22, plays even 72-73, LT 497-389 TY, PY mostly even 256-276, RY edge LT 221 (6.0) – 133 (4.0). Each team lost 3 TOs.

Marshall ret’d the opening KO 99y for TD, same player Keion Davis did it again in the 2nd qrt 97y KO ret TD. Marshall also ret’d INT 72y for TD. But Miami mostly kept it a one score game throughout to stay within striking distance. Litton 20-30-208-1-1, Ragland 23-44-298-2-1 with 15-29-TD rushing. Due to the non-offensive TDs Mia ran 86 plays to MU’s 55 with 429-267 yard edge (ypp same 5.0-4.9). FD’s were 25-15 for Redhawks. Neither team found much on the ground, Mia 131 (3.1) and MU 59 (2.4) RY. Trailing by 5, Mia forced a punt with 1 minute left and got to the MU 41 but ran out of time.

Old Dominion recorded 7 sacks, but despite that surprisingly ODU was outrushed by Albany 117-101 (Lawry just 5 att 44y incl 41y TD). It was 21-3 before Albany cut it to 17-24 midway through the 4th. ODU got a 55y TD pass to cap the scoring. ODU QB LaRussa made his first career start 14-20-161-TD-2INT. 55th straight sell out. Just 285 yards were the fewest ODU has had since 2011.

UK wins, but SMiss had 19-12 FD, 364-254 TY, 78-55 plays, 309-176 PY advantages. UK only 78-55 (2.2-1.4) RY edge. Each team was 23% on 3rd down. SMiss lost 3 TOs, UK 1 and UK scored on D. UK got 14 pts off TOs and a failed fake SM punt set up a UK FG. There was also a big UK KO ret coupled with a 15y penalty that led to a short 37y TD drive. UK did fumble at the SMiss goal line on 1st down to keep some Wildcat pts off the board. Smiss played both QBs, Griggs and Howard, combining for just 55% with 309 and 2 TD. SMiss had 2 100y recievers, but ‘16 1000y receiver Staggers was blanked without a catch. Ito Smith held to just 37y. UK’s leaading receiver was TE Conrad 3-97-TD. QB Johnson was just 11-20-176-TD, RB Snell held to 67y on 20 att (fumble at goal line).

Welcome back UAB football! They led just 10-7 at halftime, but did have 23-9 FD and 424-183 (5.3-3.0 ypp) TY edges for the game. In the 38-7 final was a 27y pick-six for the Blazers.

Baker Mayfield was 19 of 20 for 329 3 TD in the 1st half. Mayfield hit 16 straight to open, best in school history. First 14 throws went to 10 different receivers. Kyler Murray was also a 90+% passer 10-11-149-1-0. TE Mark Andrews caught 7 for career high 134 and a TD in the 1st half. UTEP opened with a 8-78y TD drive, Miners had just 89 yards on 40 plays afterwards.

Some Big Xll

Northern Iowa took the opening drive 8-75 for 7-0 lead. ISU goes 3-and-out, but then gets two pick-sixes in the 1st qrt (12 & 22y) for a 14-7 lead. UNI made and missed a FG and ISU got an O TD for the 21-10 HT lead. In 8 1st half possessions ISU managed 155y, with 75 coming on one drive. UNI had 233y on their drives. ISU did get their O going better in the 2nd H. In the 3rd qrt QB Park completed 10 of 11 passes and stretched the lead to 35-10 before UNI countered with their own TD. Clones final TD drive was an 8:36 minute 18p 86y for the then 42-17 lead. UNI lost 3 TOs, ISU lost 1. Slight edges for ISU: 24-21 FD, 405-378 TY, 71-60 plays, 271-259 (7.5-6.8 ypa)(75-60%) PY, 134-119 (3.8-5.4) RY, 47-27% 3rd down.

Petyon Bender played the entire game for Kansas going 23-37-364-4-2, spreading the ball around to 7 receivers with 2 or more catches. The running game struggled with leading rusher Williams getting just 10-41-TD. 14-0 and 21-7 HT. KU stretched it to 38-10 (77 & 57y TD throws) early 4th qrt before SEMiz tacked another one on. 38-16 final. SEMiz outrushed Jayhawks 110-73 (3.54-2.92).

Turner Gill made a return to the Big 12 and did something he couldn't do before as HC of Kansas, beat Baylor. Liberty QB was 44-60-447-3-0 with leading rec hauling in 13-192-2TD and leading RB 28-122. Their Baylor counterparts, QB Anu Solomon 14-29-278-3-1 was also the leading rusher 6-97. Baylor's starting RB Hasty was injured in the first half. In the 1st qrt Liberty had long drives end in 27 & 41y FGs for a 6-0 lead. After some TDs Liberty kicked another short FG for a 17-14 lead. 17-17 HT. Baylor had two short lived leads in the 3rd qrt before Liberty went ahead for good 34-31. They traded TDs and Zack Smith came in for the Baylor hail mary from the B42 which was INT'd around the 10 with :00 left. 48-45 F.

Eastern Washington lost alot from last year and only managed 10 pts vs Texas Tech. TT QB Shimonek was 26-30-384-3-0, two other QBs were combined 5-5-65-1-0. 32-19 FD, 626-301 TY, 75-72 plays, 449-220 (12.8-6.1 ypa), 177-81 (4.4-2.2 ypc) RY, 50-40% 3rd down. EWash lost 3 TOs (one pick-six for Raiders).

MWC

Hawaii and Western Carolina had a strange start, the first qrt drives ended in INT, blk'd FG, missed FG, punt, punt, blk'd FG, TD, INT. 7-0 lead for UH end of 1st qrt. For the game WC was only 1 of 5 on FGs with 3 blks, one of which UH ret'd 89y for TD. The star WR from the UMass game, John Ursua (12-272 week 0), DNP vs WC. All WC edges 30-23 FD, 482-453 TY, 89-73 plays, 270-154 (6.6-6.4 ypa). UH did outrush 299-212 (6.1-4.4 ypc). 3rd down conv even 41% each. WC lost 3 TOs to UH's 2. Hawaii won 41-18 largely because of WC's FG issues.

Fresno St dominated Incarnate Word. 26-8 FD, 613-148 (8-2.6 ypp) TY, 414-155 (11.2-5 ypa) PY, 199-(-7) RY. 62.5-19% 3rd down. Virgil and McMaryion each QB'd. Bulldog D had 9 TFL.

Howard led 21-9 (with 77y fumble ret TD), but UNLV came back with 24 straight to take the lead 33-21. The lead would change hands in the 4th, 36-33 Howard, 40-36 UNLV, then Howard went ontop for good 43-40 mid-way through the 4th. The final 3 UNLV drives ended in punt, fumble, time expiration. Rebels ran for 344 (7.5), but Howard ran for 309 (5.1). UNLV RBs lost 3 fumbles, Howard lost 1 TO.

SD St built a 38-3 lead through 3 qrts and pulled the starters in the 4th. 150 of UC Davis' 315 yards came in the 4th. Penny 21-197-2TD, Chapman 16-21-220-2-1. Aztec D had 8 TFL.

NMex QB Lamar Jordan threw for career high and a Bob Davie era high 213 (65%) (sacked 3x). NM was SOD at the 1 on their first drive and later SOD at the 41 in the 2nd qrt. Just 14-7 at HT with Ab Christian missing a FG. 24-7 through the 3rd, 31-7 then a 91y pick-six put the Lobos up 38-7 before AC tacked on a late one following a NM fumble at their own 34.

Cal Poly option O kept it on the ground for 196 as part of just 233 TY (3.3 ypp) to San Jose's 482 (6.2 ypp). SJ had three drives end in CP territory in the 1st qrt with punt, and two SOD. They also were sacked and fumbled setting up the CP opening 35y FG. CP added another FG and missed one before the half, just 7-6 HT. SJ's 3rd qrt TD was a 3p 16y drive following a CP fumbled, then later 5p 90y TD for a 20-6 lead. CP nickle and dimed their way on a 12p 44y drive to cut it to 13-20. Spartans added a TD then scooped a fumble for a D TD and the 34-13 final.

Imagine this, Montell Cozart, formerly at Kansas, is getting meaningful snaps at Boise while Brett Rypien stands on the sideline and watches. Both Troy and Boise's D controlled the action with 12 and 9 TFL respectively. Troy stopped Boise 3x on 4th down, but Troy O was just 27% on 3rd down. Troy QB Silvers (a 3 year career 65% passer) was just 50% and only 4.1 yp att for just 139y. Rypien was 56% for 160y. Boise had the 357-215 TY edge. Boise opened the scoring with a 81y punt ret TD and later would bust a 49y TD run for a 14-3 lead. Troy snagged a pick-six to cut it to 14-10 at HT. Boise nearly got their own pick-six, but the ball went through the DBs hands and the receiver caught it, but as he was heading towards the goaline was hit and fumbled through the EZ for a touchback. It was 17-13 4th qrt. Troy just stopped Boise on 4th down at the T20, but the very next play Silvers was rushed and floated a pass in the middle of the field and Boise INT'd at the T49. Boise would convert 3rd down 3x on the drive, the last time for a 7y TD pass with just 2:12 left. Two plays later Silvers was sacked and fumbled. 24-13 F.

Nevada incumbent QB Ty Gangi went the whole way vs Northwestern and nearly pulled the upset. Nev led 14-7 and 17-7 at HT. NW tied it 17-all, but Nev would retake the lead 20-17 in the 4th before NW got on top and tacked a late one on for the 31-20 win. NW did miss a FG following a 14-70y drive, fumbled at the Nev 13 following another 14-70y drive, was SOD after a 7p 69y drive at the Nev 27 and finally after getting a Nev INT, NW threw an INT right back ret'd to their own 17 (led to Nev FG and at the time a 20-17 Pack lead). Trailing 17-20 NW faced a 4th-and-goal at the goal line and rather than kick the FG to tie, they QB sneaked and went ahead 24-20. After Nev was SOD near midfield, NW would go 6-47 for another TD and 11 pt lead. NW edges 27-19 FD, 508-341 TY, 88-63 plays, 352-199 PY, 156-142 RY, 39-21 minute TOP.

Air Force held VMI under 100y total offense while racking up 647y of their own including 457 RY (6.8). 62 pt margin was 2nd largest in school history, AF's first shutout win since 2011 and the 95 yards allowed was the 2nd fewest allowed in school history. 7 different Falcons scored a TD.

Champion, gonna try to read all of this by Wednesday

Holiday weekend and all...or just compete decompression mentally

Thanks for all of this

I usually try and do most of this before NFL games on Sunday morning. This weekend I've had some abnormal commitments so I had to break it. I will be away this upcoming Sunday so nothing forthcoming from me on week 2.

PAC 12

Washington St dominated Montana St on the stat sheet, but only won 31-0. Leach seemed pretty happy post game with a good game in all three phases. 27-7 FD, 511-143 (7-3.2 ypp), 73-44 plays, 361-28 PY (83-41%), 150-115 (6-3.6 ypc) RY, 33-27 min TOP and each team lost a TO. Wazzou had extended drives in the 1st half: 12p 78y 6:30 min TD, 13p 98y 6:21 min TD, 3-and-out, 1p 14y fumble, halftime. Then the O in the 2nd half didn’t do much punt, TD, punt, TD, FG, end game with backups 10p 57y. Falk did become their all-time TD leader. RB James Williams set a school record for most catches (13) and receiving yards (163). Morrow ran for 89 on 10 att. 5 receivers had 4 or more catches.

The next era of Oregon football got off to a great start with a 101y opening KO TD in the 77-21 win. It was “just” 42-21 HT with one of S Utah’s TDs coming on a 5-24 drive after a fumbled KO by Ducks. S Utah did have 253y in the 1st half, but Ore had 408. After the KO TD, Ducks scored on their first two offensive possessions on 74 and 97y drives then fumbled at the Southern Utah 1 following a 49y drive, they punted, then closed the first half with 3 straight TDs. Looks like the starters played through the 3rd qrt. Oregon edges 37-25 FD, 703-365 TY, 79-86 plays, 355-266 (85-52%) PY, 348-99 (6.7-2.6 ypc) RY. Each team lost 2 TOs. Ducks only faced 3rd down 8x and converted 5. Ducks also registered 5 sacks.

Arizona QB Dawkins only attempted 13 passes completing 7 for 89y and a TD, he led the Cats on the ground with 7-92-2TD. Nick Wilson chipped in 8-87-TD. While Arz won 62-24 the stats look pretty even. NAU had 29 FDs and passed for 377 (7.5 ypa) while Arz had 23 FD and rushed for 506 (10.8 ypc). TY were 595-562 for Arz. UNA had a bad snap on a 31y FG att on their opening drive, fumbled on 2nd down from the Arz 28, INT’d on 1st down at the Arz 1, INT’d again near midfield, SOD at Arz 2, kicked a FG from the 15, and ended the game on the Arz 9.

Western Michigan isn’t ready to fade back into irrelevance. After USC went up 7-0 and WM went 3-and-out and punt, but WM got a sack and forced a USC punt then WM tied it on a 8-59y drive (aided by a D PI). USC would actually go 3-and-out on three straight possessions and just 5-18y on their next drive punting back to WM. Meanwhile WM went 11-84y for a 14-7 lead. USC did tie 14-14, WM missed a FG, then USC was INT’d right before HT. WM went right down the field 9-75 to open the 3rd qrt 21-14 lead (drive saw USC get an INT, but PI negated it – then WM ran a throw-back to QB trick play for TD). USC tied on a 10-83 drive. 21-21. Just after USC got ahead for the first time since early 1st qrt, Darius Phillips 100y KO ret to shockingly tie it again 28-28 mid 4th qrt. USC went back ahead 35-28 and after WM kicked a 44y FG the Broncos ran out of magic. A 53y USC run for TD then a 37y INT ret TD off a tipped pass gave USC the 49-31 Final. WM QB Wassink’s mobility was key as he rushed 7-32-TD while only passing for 67y on 11 of 22. But WM outrushed USC 263-232 (5.5-6.8). Darnold was 23-33-289-0-2INT. WM owned TOP 35-25 minutes.
