Toronto Blue Jays vs. New York Yankees
Wednesday, May 11, 2022 at 12:35 p.m. ET at Yankee Stadium in Bronx, New York

Jose Berrios

Just when it seemed that Toronto starter Jose Berrios may have found his footing in this season, he allowed six earned runs in Cleveland where he failed to complete five innings.

Berrios is awful in so many respects. Since his rookie year, he has never walked so many batters per nine innings as he's doing now.

His strikeout rate, though, is at a career low. This season, he's allowing home runs at the second-highest rate in his career.

Regarding his arsenal, the fastball is Berrios' favorite pitch in terms of frequency.

However, this is the pitch that is costing Berrios the most. Opponents are hitting .413 and slugging .630 against it.

Berrios vs. Yankee Batters

Not to suggest that there's a good spot for Berrios this year, he is particularly unlikable today.

In his career, Berrios suffers a 6.16 ERA in four starts at Yankee Stadium.

Look out especially for Anthony Rizzo and Aaron Judge, both of whom slug well over .700 in over 10 career at-bats against Berrios.

Jameson Taillon

Yankee starter Jameson Taillon differs from Berrios in two broadly significant respects.

One, Taillon has allowed two earned runs or fewer in each of his starts this season. Unlike Berrios, Taillon has been successful this season and consistently so.

Two, unlike Berrios, Taillon is stronger during the day in terms of career ERA.

Taillon's command, more specifically, has been solid. He rarely issues walks.

He can throw strikes more confidently because of the quality of his stuff. He generally relies on a uniquely high spin rate of his pitches.

Spin makes it harder for opposing batters to track the location of his pitches.

With his quality stuff, Taillon also excels at compelling batters to chase his pitches out of the strike zone.

Taillon vs. Blue Jay Batters

Blue Jay batters already fail to match up well against Taillon's pitches.

But they are especially bad away from Toronto. In road games, their slugging rate is .359 compared to .423 at home.

Cleveland Guardians vs. Chicago White Sox
Wednesday, May 11, 2022 at 2:10 p.m. ET at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago

Cleveland's Good Spot

The Guardian lineup is in a good spot today because the Guardians are coming off a loss.

Most recently, Guardian batters have been great about bouncing back.

After losing to the Angels on April 29, they scored nine runs at Oakland.

They then scored six runs (in 10 innings) against the Padres after losing the first game of the doubleheader.

Most recently, they scored eight runs against Toronto directly after losing to the same team.

Continuation of the pattern would entail a strong scoring output for the Guardians.

Vincent Velasquez

Cleveland goes up against White Sox starter Vincent Velasquez.

Velasquez primarily throws a fastball. His second- and third-favorite pitches are his curveball and slider.

These three pitches make up over three quarters of his arsenal.

Velasquez vs. Guardian Batters

I like Guardian batters today because they rank third in slugging against Velasquez's pitches.

Look out, for example, for Josh Naylor. Naylor is slugging .815 in May and is 2-for-three in his career against Velasquez.

Cleveland will be especially productive today because this is a daytime game and the Guardians have been strongest with their bats during the day.

Aaron Civale

The "over" is still perfect in Cleveland starter Aaron Civale's starts: it is 5-0.

Civale cannot keep the ball on the ground. Opponents easily elevate his pitches while making strong contact with them.

The "over" reliably hits in his starts because he has yielded an ERA from 5.40 to 18.00 in all of his starts.
