Big Ten Championship: Iowa vs Michigan

The date was October 9th of 2021...

Iowa had a huge home game vs the undefeated Nittany Lions while the University of Michigan was facing a night game in Lincoln, Nebraska which was at that point essentially a Super Bowl for Scott Frost.

We all know how that 1st half went in Iowa City. Clifford and the Lions were dominant in almost every way. This was a mismatch many of us had capped incorrectly. Well, then QB1 gets injured and the 2h was a great comeback for the Hawkeyes versus basically a team with no QB...

Meanwhile, later that night also in the plains...a Michigan program who had won a very rare game in a tough environment at Wisconsin set out to do it again in front of a night-time crowd that was as good as any we saw all year. This was a game where they blew a lead and had to come back and show toughness on the road in order to win a conference game. They did, on a late FG and defensive stop.

Now, nearly two months later these two teams will meet for a Championship in Indy. I doubt anyone saw this matchup coming after October 9th. Michigan, albeit with a few good road wins, was showing some issues with tempo and a versatile QB. Iowa frankly won a game they had no business being in. Yet, here we are. This just shows you how long a season is and how many twists and turns can be taken.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Back to last week....

The Snow Bowl up in East Lansing was a blast on TV. I said in via the thread last week I leaned Michigan State but obviously didn't touch with the injuries/flu issues. Sure enough, they win and cover with relative ease (game wasn't as close as score imo). Good win for them and likely a New Years Day Bowl. Penn State just extended Franklin and I guess in the climate we see now he's almost cheap but he definitely needs a patented 10 win season quickly after these last two.

I didn't see the Minnesota and Wisconsin game but big credit to the Gophers for really hanging in all season long and getting better as it went. Things looked bleak back in September, no doubt. On the other hand, Wisky got better and better...seemingly once they got Berger off the team they were back to playing Wisconsin ball (I am sure plenty of reasons including injuries). And yes, that is a strategic note for your capping next year.

Nothing else was of much interest other than The Game...

This can be summed up pretty easily. A few things happened for Michigan this season...

-They got a very cohesive staff together. This includes former players like Bellamy and Hart. They got rid of Don Brown who definitely was awful in the Ohio State games.

-They got rid of a lot of bad apples. There is a fine line in recruiting when it comes to football players and 'starz'. This is a delicate balance. Look at the Harbaugh 2018 class that was his weakest of his tenure and look at who was the best players on the field on Saturday. Interesting, eh?

-Jim bet on himself. It may seem corny, but he did it and proved it. He took a paycut, and will likely get most if not all of his incentive bonuses. Tonight, he announced he is giving all those bonuses to workers in the AD that took cuts in 2020 due to the pandemic. Classy (shocking, right?).

-More than anything though, they finally took The Game seriously for more than a few weeks a year. Credit Ohio State, because they have taken this way more seriously despite a dominant stretch during their best run of football in their history. Jim started in on this game back in January and they have been practicing every day all season for this game.

So, as far as this game... couple of points...

-Stroud is great with no pressure. He needs some seasoning with hands in the face. He'll be a very good college QB but amount to little in the pros at this point.
-Henderson will be a Heisman candidate the next two years, we knew how good he was a year ago, and that may have been an understatement.
-Obviously all 3 WR's are great -- all future NFL guys
-The offense has aa lot of talent, but a lot of finesse talent. That showed a bit on Saturday
-The Michigan gameplan on both sides was terrific. They knew they would give up yards on defense but wanted to limit big plays and win the redzone. The OSU line of all these decorated guys got just dominated by Michigan. Other than the 2nd drive, there was nowhere to run. And we know what Hutch did along with Ojabo.
-On offense, they simply just kept mixing things up and had things dialed in well except for drive #3. That was a point I thought they had countered perfectly. Gattis and company adjusted. The offensive line was outstanding and really started bullying the Bucks guys around in the 2h.

Did you know that Michigan had 4 official passes in the 2h? Yup, this was manball but with some twists. One team was simply much tougher and wanted it more.

I watched the video from the tunnel; after the game and honestly that was the summation... Ohio State wanted no part of that(really odd to me)...

I keep seeing posts on OSU boards make it over and calling themselves the new age Texas Tech. That's funny, but also something they obviously will address. They gotta be tougher...Oregon and Michigan games showed them to be a bit soft...

Anyways, that one is over... onto the next..

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Harbaugh's 2nd year was 2016 and that was his best team. They were a powerful defense with some excellent WR's and Hunt's favorite QB at the helm. We all know how that regular season ended, but the other one that hurt like hell was the loss as a huge favorite in Iowa City. There was controversy at the end of the game (shocking) and Iowa won on a last 2nd FG. They have played each other since, but not with anything on the line like this Saturday. This would be a nice little booked to that season...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Line is 11-43.5 as I type this...

Yes, that is a very aggressive number. I know many expect a letdown and that could be natural. Or, they could ride that high into Indianapolis and roll the Hawkeyes. This is not a good matchup for Iowa, but you know they will make everything tough on Michigan and vice-versa. Michigan should feast on Petras and they should run the ball pretty well against them. I'm excited for @tee*dub take on this one, no doubt.

UM vs SGU in the 'Ship of the conference.... who would have thought?

I know this will come up...

Was I surprised Saturday? obviously somewhat...

I knew they could do this but would have to keep pressure on offensively and not give up TD's only. The OSU/PSU and OSU/NU games showed the recipe for success...

OSU scored 26,26, 27 and 28 points in 4 of their games this year (on offense). The recipe was there. Now, that is a potent offense and they went balls to the wall against some bad defenses. That was my thing with them, they hadn't see a good defense in all of November. You aren't going to shut them down, so you have to manage them. Michigan did it very well, thankfully.

More than even the team they played on the field, they had a mental barrier to get over vs this team.

They also had to learn to play vs tempo. I got a bit concerned early but the defense was able to dictate their tempo a lot more as the game wore on.

Anyways, that was one of the cooler environments you will see in college football. Leinart says it's the best he's ever been a part of. Fox had their highest rated game EVER. Love em or hate em, people love to watch Michigan (for a multitude of reasons). The whole game had a surreal feeling to be honest, and the snow helped that a lot.

Mouse off the back, now they need to start sustaining it a bit more.

Great guy off the back, now they need to start sustaining it a bit more.
It was why we watch college football. Hoping this coming weekend can be half as good.

Lezbi honest, we could all use getting the Great Guy off our backs at some point

I have nonfaith in Harbaugh to win back to back big games. Iowa can mannup in the trenches....plus had an extra day off since they played friday....I dont really see how/why people would wanna lay 11 in this spot....especially with a total of 43....this game has 20-17 written all over it....im not sure who wins....

In November and December games since 2014 when Iowa is a dog or a small favorite of >=-3 they are 11-1 ATS last 12 and 18-6ATS last 24. It is the way they are coached and recruited. Iowa should be a tough out for Michigan.

You don’t think it’s more people like to watch Michigan VS tOSU? I always watch it and you know where I live.

But I bet it feels good to finally get that Mouse off the back BAR. A small part of me is pulling for y’all to win it all!
Go Blue!

That was Big 10 football at it's best. I love those November games, cold, snow, lots at stake, fans in heavy parkas, students drunk and raising hell.

Just a great game to watch and I agree there was something special about that game I could sense as soon as the telecast came on. And give it up to Fox, the game broadcast was as good as it gets

Great post.

My only issue with Fox is they failed to show 2-3 very significant replays.

Otherwise, very enjoyable.

Just not seeing how Iowa generates many points against a team thats strengths are Michigan strengths too.

Minnesota did Michigan a favor. No way you want to rematch with Wisconsin again with their momentum.

Dome has to be advantage to Michigan speed. Iowa has zero playmakers and it will be their ultimate downfall Saturday.

I did converse with Mister SGU himself a few hours ago... Hopefully he lends some thoughts as the week progresses...

when iowa has a speed disadvantage combined with a talent disadvantage...idiot ferentz makes that situation three times worse. they get down 1 or 2 scores and he changes nothing. he just keeps running vanilla plays then punting, hoping his defense can hold. and the score just gets worse. kinda like their 2014, 15 and 16 bowl debacles. we're losing and desperate, but we don't want to risk anything. stick to the game plan that's not working until the clock hits zero.

Yes. A tiger doesn't change its stripes. Ferentz plays the field position game hoping for a turnover. To their credit, they get turnovers a lot. Always have. No playmakers this year. Can't play manball against Michigan. It won't work.

Problem is, this Michigan team doesn't turn it over very often. Rare.

I would've bet Wisky with both fists but I want no part of Iowa. I don't see how they score. I think it's close early and Michigan pulls away in the 2nd half.

Michigan/OSU was great TV. It's why we love this sport.

For me it's all about one Iowa TD...they score it against UM defense, all the other fluff should play out. If Iowa score on UM defense, even on a trick play, the plus double is love. Lots of ifs, but rather the side I prefer getting ifs.

Agree on all of this

I agree. Which is why I'm not playing the ats right now. Hoping to get Michigan in a tight game early and get a better number live.

I shouldn't say you'll be sorry for taking the +10.5. They could cover, but I would be absolutely stunned if they win.

Yeah, no vested interest in that game (other than a small play on OSU) but was happy to see Harbaugh win and didn't lose any sleep seeing OSU fans miserable.

Having said that, it was riveting TV.. Everything about it was. Snow, rivalry, Gus / Klatt, the crowd, Fox's coverage. Its camera work is outstanding, all the way down the camera on the official's cap . On the crowd, as an outsider, Michigan crowd gets the same rap as a Texas crowd. Just average. But that was an incredibly loud, and impactful, stadium on Saturday. Ask Ohio's offensive line.

A few bluehairs were not happy with the "crowd" lol

^^^ his original post is about the fact OSU fans are holding onto their tickets and hotel rooms hahaha

i dont think we see a letdown here, i doubt they will play that amazing again cause ya rarely see kids play b2b damn near perfect games but a letdown doesnt make sense to me, if they dont win this game then last week was pretty meaningless wasnt it? ton of points tho, i dunno that i can lay it, i dont want iowa either tho.

Iowa's tackles are terrible at pass blocking. Presumably they will be down in the game and Hutchison will get t pin his ears back. He's going to pile up the stats in this game in front of a national audience. If Bryce Young has a bad game and Alabama loses to UGA then Hutchison is going to win the Heisman.

I took him +1400 this week for a small bet..never know.

Conversed a bit with bar early week.. biggest mismatch in history of tackle football is Michigan’s DE’s v. SGU OT’s. If you have children under age of 9 , please don’t allow them to watch that matchup.

Thing is- SGU knows that. They will do one of two things. Completely ferenz to shorten game at every possible juncture and they have the back end defense to do that. BUT, that won’t work and they know it. They open it up IMO. When Iowa knows they have bad matchup and know they need to score they actually can. They have playmakers but often ferenz chooses to freeze up the game. He knows freezing up will result in loss 9.5/10 in this one. Iowa has nothing to lose. Michigan has everything to lose. Iowa takes punchers chance mentality and very sure this sails over the 44. Decent hedge would be half that bet with the +12.5. I’m rolling the over. Sitting at sports bar/casino in Alton fucking Illinois . That’s a sad existence. Waiting in line behind a guy trying to lay down a 9 team $5 parlay..Lol . GLA
