PITTSBURGH (AP)—Ben Roethlisberger signed an eight-year extension worth $102 million with the Pittsburgh Steelers that makes him one of the NFL’s highest-paid players.
The deal includes more than $36 million guaranteed, and keeps Roethlisberger with the Steelers through 2015.
“Ben has been an outstanding leader on the field for the Steelers since his rookie year and we are very happy to know that he will be our quarterback for many years to come,” Steelers president Art Rooney II said Monday in a statement.
Roethlisberger turned 26 on Sunday and said the contract was a great birthday present.
“This is about being a Pittsburgh Steeler for as long as I can be. I love Pittsburgh,” Roethlisberger said. He said he “wanted to be like the Dan Marinos, like the John Elways, guys who played with one team their whole career.”

The Pro Bowl quarterback led the Steelers to a Super Bowl victory two years ago and has been the starter in all four of seasons he’s been with the team.
Roethlisberger threw 32 touchdown passes with only 11 interceptions in leading the Steelers to the playoffs this season, bouncing back from an injury-marred season.
He was hurt in a serious motorcycle accident in the 2006 offseason, then underwent an appendectomy. Although he started 15 games, his play was subpar. He threw 23 interceptions, three more than he had thrown in his first two seasons, and Pittsburgh failed to make the playoffs.
This season, he led the Steelers to a 10-6 record and the AFC North title before they were eliminated by Jacksonville in the playoffs.
Roethlisberger was the third quarterback taken in the ‘04 draft, behind Eli Manning and Philip Rivers, and the 11th choice overall. He started 13 games his rookie season and was voted offensive rookie of the year, the first quarterback to win the award since it was first given in 1957. The next year he led the Steelers to a Super Bowl victory.

and he deserves every single penny of it! :shake:

i look forward to the many years ahead with him at QB for my stillers....

he's a great guy, has good head on his shoulders (lucky to still have it too after his accident), and is one helluva football player!!!

now we need another championship!!! ....you know one for the other hand!!!

i had no idea until i saw it today, but yesterday was Ben's 26th birthday (yesterday was my 24th)...

$102 million is one helluva nice birthday gift to get at 26 thats for sure!!!!!

I am sure there is some kind of clause for big ben about no riding motorcycles or other hazardous activities. I don't think ben is worth 102 million. If my mind serves me correctly, i would like to think that it does, is he now the highest paid player in the league?

Thats about 12.75 million a year. WOW. I think he is in the 8-9 million dollar range. I think next year that the steelers are going to take a step back. call me an anit-homer but i just don't see where they have the protection up front.

Also, on a sidenote what was his agent thinking getting him 8 years. If they can get 12 million a year now. Imagine what he could renegotiate for in 5 years. I would of did a 5 year, because every year the average salary goes up. Who knows what ben would of got in 5 years?? Also, with the salary cap and the opt-out that the owners may do the sky could be the limit with ben.

the whole division may take a step back ...brutal schedule next year

Steelers also signed RB / PR / KR , Melwede Moore from Vikes... i like it

If the steelers can somehow come up with a center , i think the line will be fine even without Fanaca ...we will draft OL help just not sure it will be a 1st rounder...Mahan was brutal as the center but his natural positon is guard ...

i saw on sportscenter... these are the other QBs who signed $100+ million contracts....

Favre - i'm fine with these cuz he is god!
Bledsoe - uhhh whatever but he does have a SB championship even if he didn't play.
Culpepper - no SB wins.
Mcnabb - no SB wins.
Vick - no SB wins.... and in jail.

 BIG BEN - 44-18 won/loss record (including a 5-2 playoff record) as a starting quarterback in the NFL (.721 win pct.)!!!!!!

so please again tell me why Ben doesn't deserve this contract 100%....

mogo, no i mean per year who is making ben's per year money.

I think ben is overhyped....Cowher was the reason why he is so successful. A power running game with throwing it a little bit. Now that ben has more responsibility on his shoulders i do not think he will prove to be as valuable.

2006 - 280/469 (59.7%), 3513 yds, 18TDs, 23INTs, 75.4 passer rating

2007 - 264/404 (65.4%), 3154 yds, 32TDs, 11INTs, 104.1 passer rating

so the steelers gave him more responsibility last year and all he did was step it up and throw close to double the number of TDs he threw the year before....

as far as money per year goes though i have no idea how he compares to other QBs...

make it rain Big Ben

March 3, 2008 -- PITTSBURGH Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger sure knows how to live it up. Spies at the Playboy Club in the Palms Casino in Las Vegas spotted the player last week "burning the midnight oil at a blackjack table." Flanked by friends and bodyguards - not to mention a bevy of ladies - the gridiron hero "dropped $25,000 at the tables" last Sunday, and hit the tables again Wednesday night. "He was flirting with the Bunnies, smoking cigars and drinking vodka Red Bulls" before heading down to N9NE Steakhouse for dinner.

Pittburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was also in Vegas — he hit the Playboy Club blackjack table with friends and bodyguards by his side. A source says he was placing bets of up to $8,000 per hand.

money; money; money;

"The first thing that popped in my mind was, 'OK, you got this huge contract. You got all this money. How does that break out at a per-game basis?'"

By Mr. McGee's computations, a 20-game schedule -- regular season, playoffs and Super Bowl---- would break down to $10,625 per minute, "whether the defense or offense is on the field."

Using Mr. Roethlisberger's stats from last season, it also comes out to $31,875 per pass attempt and $398,437.50 per touchdown.

This is a young man who earned roughly $1 million this past season, and suddenly he's set to earn more than 12 times that much?
