Houston Astros vs. Los Angeles Angels
Saturday, September 3, 2022 at 9:07 p.m. ET at Angel Stadium in Anaheim

Who Starts for Houston?

Luis Garcia starts for Houston today.

Pertinently to my favorite play for this game, he is a strong "under" pitcher outside of Houston.

The "under" is hitting in 63.6 percent of Houston's road games in which he starts.

The Odds

The over/under for this game -- it sits at 8 as of early Saturday morning -- is unusually high for a game in which Shohei Ohtani is pitching for the Angels.

For reference, when Ohtani last squared off against Houston, Cristian Javier started for the Astros, and the over/under for that game was 7.

This posted total constitutes a formulation of disrespect towards today's Astro starter.

While Garcia's ERA appears unattractive, he has been specifically bad in his home ballpark.

Outside of Houston, though, he is yielding a slugging rate that is .93 lower than that which he yields in Houston.

Garcia in Angel Stadium

While Garcia is repeatedly stronger outside of his own Minute Maid Park, he is specifically at his best in Angel Stadium.

This venue is his favorite one in which to compete.

He enjoys a 2.19 ERA in five appearances and four starts in this venue.

Garcia vs. Angel Batters

Moreover, Garcia matches up well against Angel batters given the pitches that he throws.

Primarily, he throws a fastball and cutter.

Garcia throws both of these pitches more than three times as often as he throws any other pitch.

Combined, they make up close to three-quarters of his arsenal.

Angel batters merit pessimism today because they rank 22nd in slugging against his favorite pitches from righties.

Who Starts for the Angels?

If one likes Ohtani's counterpart in a given game, then it is hard to dislike the "under," because Ohtani is so reliable.

Most recently, he has allowed two earned runs or fewer in five of his last six starts.

Likewise, the "under" has hit in five of these most recent six starts.

Ohtani vs. Astro Batters

This year, Ohtani has been particularly reliable against Astro batters.

In three starts against them, he yields a 1.08 ERA.

Most impressively, his FIP (like ERA but factors out fielding) was under 0.15 in each of those three starts.

San Diego Padres vs. Los Angeles Dodgers
Saturday, September 3, 2022 at 9:10 p.m. ET at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles

Who Starts for the Padres?

Sean Manaea starts for the Padres today.

Except for a strong start against a lowly Washington side that ranks 26thin runs per game, Manaea has consistently been struggling.

He has yielded three runs only in games -- on August 10 and August 16 -- in which he failed to last more than five innings.

On August 5 and August 28, he was blasted by the Dodgers and Royals, respectively.

Manaea's start against Washington took place at home where he has been profitable for bettors to back.

However, San Diego is yielding -7.5 units in road games in which Manaea starts.

Manaea vs. Dodger Batters

Whether in Los Angeles or in San Diego, Manaea is non-competitive against the Dodger lineup.

This year, he is 0-2 with a 15.12 ERA in two starts against L.A.

One should expect the Dodgers to thrive against him because they rank second in slugging .510 against his two favorite pitches, the sinker and changeup, from lefties.

Who Starts for Los Angeles?

Julio Urias starts for the Dodgers today.

Contrary to Manaea, Urias carries superb form into today's game.

He has allowed one run or fewer in each of his last five starts and in seven of his last eight.

The one exception came in Colorado's mega hitters-friendly ballpark in which he excelled, allowing two runs in seven innings.

Most recently, the Dodger run-line has been a solid bet in Urias' starts, hitting in four of his last five.

Urias vs. Padre Batters

Active Padre batters lack a consistent track record on which to pin any hope of competing against Urias.

The only Padres with more than two career hits against Urias have had 15 or more at-bats against him.
