Larry Bird has to be wondering what has happened to the NBA these days..
Pacers' Tinsley was target; equipment manager suffered gunshot wounds

- Indiana Pacers guard Jamaal Tinsley and several companions were targeted in a shooting Sunday morning that wounded one person outside a downtown hotel.
Tinsley was not injured.

<!-- INLINE HEADSHOT (END) --> Joey Qatato, identified as the team's equipment manager on the Pacers' Web site, was struck in both elbows as he sat with Tinsley in the player's Rolls Royce. The 48-year-old Qatato was taken to Methodist Hospital, where he was treated and released.
Police said the shooting involved an assault rifle and followed a confrontation when Tinsley and his companions were leaving the "Cloud 9" club.
NBA spokesman Tim Frank said: "We are gathering details but before we know more, it's inappropriate for us to comment."
Tinsley's group had arrived at the club in three cars owned by the player -- a Mercedes, a Rolls Royce and a Dodge Charger. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Sgt. Paul Thompson said a group of people had congregated around the Rolls Royce and was giving Tinsley a hard time about his cars and his earnings.
After Tinsley and his friends left, they realized they were being followed by a gray Chrysler and a dark pickup truck, Thompson said.
Instead of going home, Tinsley's group pulled into the Conrad Hotel, a downtown luxury hotel, where the shooting began. Tinsley's Rolls Royce was struck by several bullets, and five bullet holes were found in the Charger, police said.
No one was injured in the Charger.
Two vehicles in Tinsley's group then followed the shooters in a chase, and Tinsley's brother, James, returned fire at the attackers, police said.
It was unknown whether anyone was hit, and Jamaal Tinsley was not involved in the chase, Thompson said.
Sunday's shooting is the latest in a string of violent crimes targeting professional athletes.
Washington Redskins star Sean Taylor died Nov. 27, a day after he was shot in the bedroom of his Miami home in what police have said was a botched burglary.
Over the summer, NBA players Eddy Curry and Antoine Walker were robbed just weeks apart in their Chicago-area homes. In September, two men broke into the home of Houston Texans cornerback Dunta Robinson, tying up the victim and stealing jewelry.
Authorities were called to the hotel about 3:40 a.m.
"We're grateful that it happened at that time of day," Thompson said. "The streets are pretty bare that time of the morning.
"If it happened during rush hour, God knows what would have happened."
The point guard appeared to be the only Pacer in the group, which included his brother and several friends, Thompson said.
The Indiana Pacers did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment. Tinsley's agent, Raymond Brothers, could not be reached for comment.
Police arrested one person in Tinsley's group, Antoine Toon, 31, on an outstanding warrant out of Georgia.
Police still were investigating and looking for the two vehicles. They have made no additional arrests, Thompson said.
Tinsley and another Pacers player, Marquis Daniels, both face charges stemming from a bar fight almost a year ago,
A grand jury indicted Tinsley on a felony charge of intimidation and misdemeanor counts of battery, disorderly conduct and intimidation in connection with a Feb. 6 fight at the 8 Seconds Saloon.
Daniels is charged with battery and disorderly conduct, both misdemeanors.
According to a police report, the manager of the bar said Tinsley threatened to kill him during the fight. The confrontation with the players followed another fight involving a person who employees thought was trying to steal coats from the coat check area, police said.

:14_6_14:What a classy league..

This article is classic nba. Unreal the thugs now a days. What would Tinsley be doing if he wasn't hooping? The guy was granted some bs scholarship to get off the streets to play for Eustachy in college..

Do you think you would ever see Tom Brady or Steve Nash rolling around in Rolls's and hitting up clubs at 330 AM?

No wonder the Pacers or Falcons and teams like that can't win when your leaders are complete clowns.

I didnt wanna go there tru but its obvious how he feels bout black players

Its not black or white, Its about being a leader. I just dont see any leaders on the pacers team. Sorry if you disagree.. If you want to point one out to me then I'll be glad to here it. In sports you need leaders. Look at the last couple football winners. Brady, Big Ben and Manning.. you don't see them involved in this kind of crap. Just so happens when there is a shooting at a club or someone gets arrested that 98.9 % of the time its an african american.

its his fault he goes to a club and someone decides to shoot at him?
No its not his fault.. i guess trouble just finds him though..
INDIANAPOLIS -- Now, Stephen Jackson is in trouble in two states.

<!---------------------INLINE HEADSHOT (END)--------------------> The Indiana Pacers guard, already on probation for his role in the brawl with Detroit Pistons fans two years ago, was to appear in court Thursday morning to face a felony charge of criminal recklessness and misdemeanor counts of battery and disorderly conduct in a fight outside an Indianapolis strip club last week.
Jackson shot a gun in the air at least five times, originally telling authorities he fired in self defense, police said.
But charges were filed Wednesday by Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi, who said conviction on the felony count alone carries a prison term of six months to three years. He said Jackson could also face three months in jail in Detroit if authorities there determine he has violated his probation.
"Firing the shots in the air at that point is criminal recklessness," Brizzi said. "Those bullets, once they come up, have to come down, and they come down at least 90 miles per hour, and they do absolutely have the ability to take someone's life."
Pacers teammates Jamaal Tinsley, Marquis Daniels and Jimmie Hunter were with Jackson at the club, but were not charged. All three of them played in Wednesday night's 103-89 preseason victory over the New Jersey Nets, but Jackson was not with the team at Conseco Fieldhouse.
Coach Rick Carlisle said he expected Jackson to practice Thursday and he could play Saturday when Indiana plays host to Utah.
Tinsley was the only one of the four Pacers at the club who started Wednesday night, and he received a mixed reaction from the crowd when he was introduced before the game. Still, many fans voiced support for the team.

Anyway Im done with this argument but you wouldnt see a tim duncan involved in this either and yes he is african american. Theres a reason these guys end up shot, they make poor decisions :shake:

Spoken from an African American.. the truth hurts sometimes.
DITOR'S NOTE: This column originally appeared Wednesday, two days before Friday's arrests of four men in the shooting death of Sean Taylor. There's a reason I call them the Black KKK. The pain, the fear and the destruction are all the same.Someone who loved Sean Taylor is crying right now. The life they knew has been destroyed, an 18-month-old baby lost her father, and, if you're a black man living in America, you've been reminded once again that your life is in constant jeopardy of violent death.
The Black KKK claimed another victim, a high-profile professional football player with a checkered past this time.
No, we don't know for certain the circumstances surrounding Taylor's death. I could very well be proven wrong for engaging in this sort of aggressive speculation. But it's no different than if you saw a fat man fall to the ground clutching his chest. You'd assume a heart attack, and you'd know, no matter the cause, the man needed to lose weight.
Well, when shots are fired and a black man hits the pavement, there's every statistical reason to believe another black man pulled the trigger. That's not some negative, unfair stereotype. It's a reality we've been living with, tolerating and rationalizing for far too long.
When the traditional, white KKK lynched, terrorized and intimidated black folks at a slower rate than its modern-day dark-skinned replacement, at least we had the good sense to be outraged and in no mood to contemplate rationalizations or be fooled by distractions.

Our new millennium strategy is to pray the Black KKK goes away or ignores us. How's that working?
About as well as the attempt to shift attention away from this uniquely African-American crisis by focusing on an "injustice" the white media allegedly perpetrated against Sean Taylor.
Within hours of his death, there was a story circulating that members of the black press were complaining that news outlets were disrespecting Taylor's victimhood by reporting on his troubled past
No disrespect to Taylor, but he controlled the way he would be remembered by the way he lived. His immature, undisciplined behavior with his employer, his run-ins with law enforcement, which included allegedly threatening a man with a loaded gun, and the fact a vehicle he owned was once sprayed with bullets are all pertinent details when you've been murdered.
Marcellus Wiley, a former NFL player, made the radio circuit Wednesday, singing the tune that athletes are targets. That was his explanation for the murders of Taylor and Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams and the armed robberies of NBA players Antoine Walker and Eddy Curry.
Really?
Let's cut through the bull(manure) and deal with reality. Black men are targets of black men. Period. Go check the coroner's office and talk with a police detective. These bullets aren't checking W-2s.
Rather than whine about white folks' insensitivity or reserve a special place of sorrow for rich athletes, we'd be better served mustering the kind of outrage and courage it took in the 1950s and 1960s to stop the white KKK from hanging black men from trees.
But we don't want to deal with ourselves. We take great joy in prescribing medicine to cure the hate in other people's hearts. Meanwhile, our self-hatred, on full display for the world to see, remains untreated, undiagnosed and unrepentant.
Our self-hatred has been set to music and reinforced by a pervasive culture that promotes a crab-in-barrel mentality.
You're damn straight I blame hip hop for playing a role in the genocide of American black men. When your leading causes of death and dysfunction are murder, ignorance and incarceration, there's no reason to give a free pass to a culture that celebrates murder, ignorance and incarceration.

Of course there are other catalysts, but until we recapture the minds of black youth, convince them that it's not OK to "super man dat ho" and end any and every dispute by "cocking on your bitch," nothing will change.
Does a Soulja Boy want an education?
HBO did a fascinating documentary on Little Rock Central High School, the Arkansas school that required the National Guard so that nine black kids could attend in the 1950s. Fifty years later, the school is one of the nation's best in terms of funding and educational opportunities. It's 60 percent black and located in a poor black community.
Watch the documentary and ask yourself why nine poor kids in the '50s risked their lives to get a good education and a thousand poor black kids today ignore the opportunity that is served to them on a platter.
Blame drugs, blame Ronald Reagan, blame George Bush, blame it on the rain or whatever. There's only one group of people who can change the rotten, anti-education, pro-violence culture our kids have adopted. We have to do it.

According to reports, Sean Taylor had difficulty breaking free from the unsavory characters he associated with during his youth.
The "keepin' it real" mantra of hip hop is in direct defiance to evolution. There's always someone ready to tell you you're selling out if you move away from the immature and dangerous activities you used to do, you're selling out if you speak proper English, embrace education, dress like a grown man, do anything mainstream.
The Black KKK is enforcing the same crippling standards as its parent organization. It wants to keep black men in their place — uneducated, outside the mainstream and six feet deep.
In all likelihood, the Black Klan and its mentality buried Sean Taylor, and any black man or boy reading this could be next.

Like Tupac said money is the root of all evil.

why u gotta bring vick into this? why even bring up nash or brady into this even? if nash or any other white baller rolled to a club an someone shot at his ass or crew would u come on here an make ur ignorant comments sayin he is a thug? fuck no u wouldnt. we both know how u feel about black players, keep that shit to urself from now on.

Nash and Brady don't have a rap sheet 10 pages long like Tinsley and Stephen Jackson theres a difference. I didn't bring race into this, you did. I was talking about pro athletes in general.

u cant wiggle out of it abcs, we know tha intent of how u spoke that shit earlier. doesnt matter what tinsley did before tha ***** was still jus there an got shot at an in ur eyes hes a thug. dont try an talk about leader this an leader that, when u brought up brady an nash it was easy to understand where u were goin wit it. already know how u feel about black qbs, already know ur hate for vick, an so on. again fuck bein a leader this or a leader that if nash or brady was at a strip club late night or any club an someone shoot at them an they crew of people would they be thugs? or jus all black nba ballers thats out late nights havin fun wit they people that get shoot at are thugs in ur eyes? tha forum here is free for open thoughts an freedom of speach, but yo i dont wanna see this kinda useless shit, keep that hate to urself.

Im sorry could you translate that for me. One of my roommates is African Amercian, I am far from a racist..
So don't call me one. I said I dont think you can win a superbowl with a vince young mike vick type quarterback and through 40+ superbowls I have been proven correct.

Not exactly sure what this all says, but do we know that Tinsley and his entourage had nothing to do with the mele? I don't think the facts are out yet. You are making assumptions, just like you are making assumptions about me being a racist. Please dont.I would love to hear what Donny Walsh and Larry Bird think about another one of their star players being out at 3:30 AM after all of the shit this team has gone through before :shake:

Its not black or white, Its about being a leader. I just dont see any leaders on the pacers team. Sorry if you disagree.. If you want to point one out to me then I'll be glad to here it. What was big ben doing riding a motorcycle? Does that count as poor judgement?

What was big ben doing riding a motorcycle? Does that count as poor judgement?
I think the poor judgment was not wearing a helmet. Kellen Winslows behavior on the crotch rockets was also poor judgment.
If I was an athlete I wouldn't put myself in those situations, especially if the contract said you must refrain from them. Good point

My whole point of the thread was NBA and NFL guys at strip clubs at 2 and 3 AM always leads to trouble. Ask this guy how his season is going
pacman.jpg

I think the nba needs to step up and take a more proactive approach a la the NFL to help clean up their tarnished image.

No system is perfect, with any league your going to have your gutterball players. If your the commisioner you just have to take it in stride. Many blame the NFL coaching staff and other professional leagues, but i think the colleges are just to blame for taking players with character issues just to further there program. Pac man went to WVU as did Chris Henry and now does Noel Devine all of those star players have very similar rap sheets. Maybe that is the only way that some coaches keep there jobs, but in any case i think the colleges deserve just as much credit for their character issues because there whole method of thinking is to take them to make their football/basketball team that much better and the college will have to put up with their antics only temporarily as they will move on.

I think the problem is deeper than colleges. Do you think these kids actually want to go to class? Cmon. OJ Mayo is probablly taking PE, Algebra 101 and computer science, then will drop out once basketball is over. It starts with todays public schools. This has been a topic for a while. Guys who come from poor schooling and go to an institution like Duke have no chance, even if they all take the same bs major there (sociology). Some kids aren't made out to be students, and they will be the first to admit it. Sure some colleges recruit questionable characters, I just think guys like Stephen Jackson who couldnt even qualify to get into college.. and Jamal Tinsley who came from the streets of rucker to play at Iowa St could care less about Kollige!

The thing that irks me is that guys like Stephen Jackson don't realize how good they have it. They don't understand that they are professionals and role models. Oh well. Can't wait to see the press release from the Pacers.

its his fault he goes to a club and someone decides to shoot at him?

ndianapolis Star -
Indiana Pacers ' team leaders Sunday publicly admonished Jamaal Tinsley for being out at a time and place that put him in harm's way -- in the sights of someone wielding an assault rifle -- and said it's time for professional athletes to make "smarter" decisions.

Coach Jim O'Brien, Pacers' President Larry Bird and player and team leader Jermaine O'Neal responded to the incident later Sunday.

O'Brien characterized Tinsley as a "victim (who) wasn't out there causing problems," but said Tinsley should not have been in that situation at 3 A.M.

"But that's a decision that was made, and it was the wrong decision to make," O'Brien said. "I would think as we all suspect, nothing good happens after 1 o'clock if you're around alcohol or around an environment where there could be weapons."

"With Jamaal, it's just 'Why are you out at 3:30 in a place like that?' I don't really have a problem with guys being out 'till 3:30, but you've got to know your surroundings," Bird said. "Obviously, it's time for these guys to take a look at everything that's happened throughout our league, throughout professional sports, and step back and take a hard look at it and make smarter decisions."
Sunday was the team's third club-related incident in a little more than a year. Tinsley was present but not charged at a Westside strip club when former Pacer Stephen Jackson fired a gun in the air and was hit by a car on Oct. 6, 2006. Tinsley and teammate Marquis Daniels are due in court Jan. 14 on charges stemming from a bar fight at the 8 Seconds Saloon on Feb. 6. A grand jury indicted Tinsley on a felony charge of intimidation, and misdemeanor counts of battery, disorderly conduct and intimidation from the Feb. 6 incident. Daniels is charged with battery and disorderly conduct, both misdemeanors.

Exactly what i said..
This thread is about common sense, glad Obrien and Bird are reasonable :tiphat:
By the way im glad Jermaine Oneal stepped up and criticized this fool as well. Jermaine has had a checkered past, including the night at the Palace, but he does seem to have learned from his mistakes and has become a leader (sort of)

"This is something we can't just put right behind us and walk away from," Bird told Pacers.com. "It's something we'll have to discuss. I don't know how long it'll take and we'll continue to talk about it. We have to make a change, there's no question about it."

Like i have said a 1000 times, you dont want this type of trash on your team, its bad for your image, its bad for the community, its bad for the team. Look what Portland did, they overhauled their roster and transformed their image. It has nothing to do with race, its about being educated, mature and making smart decisions

Indiana Pacers point guard Jamaal Tinsley admitted Monday that he had made a “stupid mistake” by putting himself in harm’s way.

<!--MAIN FACTS BOX--> </td> <td width="10">

</td> </tr> </tbody></table> <!-- REMAINING TEXT --> “I have to do things smarter and put myself in a better situation,” Tinsley said at Conseco Fieldhouse after practice Monday. “Nightclubs and alcohol and guns late at night, I put myself in a tough position.”
The Pacers said they would not punish Tinsley for his role in an incident that ended in Downtown gunfire early Sunday. But the team agreed he had once again showed poor judgment and, Tinsley said, admonished him to change his party-going ways.

It was the third time in 14 months Tinsley has run into trouble at an Indianapolis nightclub, and it comes on the heels of other professional athletes running into similar trouble.

Tinsley’s incident sounded a familiar refrain: A professional athlete and a group of friends out late at a club get into an altercation with another group.

Athletes say they are the targets in such situations.

“Me going out was stupidity; knowing the situation I’m in, knowing I’m a high-(profile) athlete, it just wasn’t a smart decision,” Tinsley said.

Athletes need to understand they are vulnerable “in situations where the public has access to us,” Miami Heat center Alonzo Mourning told The Associated Press on Sunday.

Mourning cautioned athletes to conceal their wealth, not flaunt it.

“Don’t walk into a club with a crowd of people wearing a $250,000 chain around your neck or pull out a wad of hundreds for everybody to see,” Mourning said. “Pull out a credit card instead. I mean, you’re asking for attention and you’re asking for trouble.”

The incident involving Tinsley began in the Cloud 9 parking lot, 5150 W. 38th St., after the club cleared patrons because some women were fighting. Cloud 9 was the site of an after-concert party for R&B vocalist Keyshia Cole, who was a supporting act at an R. Kelly show Saturday night at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Tinsley’s attackers took issue with his luxury cars — a Rolls-Royce, Mercedes CL6 and Dodge Charger — and his wealth, police said.

They chased Tinsley’s group from Cloud 9 to Downtown. People in a blue truck, possibly a Dodge, fired shots at the Rolls-Royce Tinsley was riding in and the Charger outside the Conrad Hotel, police said. Pacers equipment manager Joe Qatato, in the Rolls, was shot in each elbow.

Experts are working to enhance an image taken from surveillance video at the Conrad Hotel. The video shows the blue truck, and police hope the shooter might be identifiable.

This isn’t the first club incident involving Tinsley.

Tinsley and teammate Marquis Daniels have a January court date to face charges stemming from a nightclub fight in January. Both deny any wrongdoing.

In October 2006, Tinsley was with former Pacer Stephen Jackson when Jackson fired a gun after he was struck by a car in another nightclub fight. Jackson pleaded guilty to criminal recklessness. Deon Willford, the driver of the car that hit Jackson, was convicted of battery and sentenced to two years in prison.

Athletes say their wealth and fame make them an easy target. Their status can cause jealousy or perhaps initiate a confrontation that would enable a person to file a lawsuit and be awarded a large sum of money.

“You’re definitely a target,” Los Angeles Clippers forward Elton Brand said early this year. “Anytime you’re in a bar, restaurant or club and someone wants to start trouble, you just have to back down and walk away from it because you have a lot more to lose.

“If you do something stupid, you’re in trouble. If they do something stupid, they’re famous.”

Some athletes, including Pacers forward Jermaine O’Neal and former Pacer Reggie Miller, have hired professional security guards for protection. Many players carry licensed handguns. A Boston Globe article last year quoted sources who stated about 90 percent of NFL players carry guns and far more than half of NBA players do so.

Tinsley, Daniels and Jackson, as well as Colts receiver Marvin Harrison and former Colts Cato June and Edgerrin James, are among those who have acknowledged carrying weapons for protection.

Others hope good judgment, from others and themselves, will keep them out of trouble.

“Clubs are a dangerous place,” Pacers forward Troy Murphy said. “I’ve seen a couple of brawls. It can be kind of scary. People try to bump into you, say stuff to you. You really have to watch out for yourself.”

Last New Year’s Eve, a man approached Pacers center Jeff Foster as he was leaving a party in Broad Ripple and began hurling insults.

“I’m sitting in my car wondering, ‘Why?’ ” Foster recalled. “What’s the purpose of it? Ninety-nine out of 100 people are nice, but you have people who get drunk and they know who you are and they want a piece of you.”

Ok nothing about race.. Like i stated from the beginning, tinsley was making stupid decisions and put himself in a bad position.. Sorry that you feel otherwise :tiphat:

Oh yea also hanging out with a guy who has a warrant out for his arrest in another state for selling drugs.. that is also classified as not a smart idea.

Stern should step in if the Pacers do not.

the wake of someone allegedly shooting at Jamaal Tinsley Sunday in Indiana and Sean Taylor’s recent murder – as well as this summer’s home invasions of Antoine Walker and Eddy Curry – it’s understandable to wonder about the danger of being a professional athlete. Athletes are often criticized for carrying guns, but are these examples why they feel the need to carry?
Could athletes eliminate much of the threat by better picking the company they keep and choosing where (or where not to) go at night? Is it even fair to ask athletes to stay away from clubs?
Is it fair to ask them to leave their friends behind? The same people who cared and believed in them before they became successful?

</noscript> </td> </tr> </tbody></table> Unfortunately, yes. Anyone who is successful will tell you firsthand that with success, change has to occur. In my estimation that is why most people aren’t successful. They are afraid of change.
In religion they call it blocking your blessings. In sports, it’s called knowing your personnel.
Some people are actually afraid of success because success sometimes requires you to remove yourself from familiar surroundings. Who doesn’t want to be in a place that everybody knows your name?
It’s the same reason why an abusive couple stays together. They’re afraid not of the consequences of their current problems, but what will happen if they do change.
In today’s society, having a gun in the house is acceptable, in my opinion. But if you’re going out and risking your multimillion-dollar livelihood in the less-controlled environment of the streets, you might want to consider hiring a bodyguard.
I totally understand that random stuff happens and that most players and other successful people are targets. But we increase our chances of becoming a target based on whom we hang with and where we go.
Are you more prone to run into trouble if you’re a regular attendee of strip clubs and night clubs, and you have a crew of friends that can’t adapt to your success? Yes! That’s where the madness happens.
I’m not saying that you have to stay home and be a hermit, but you do need to be selective. And even then you can still have problems. The key is bringing along friends who can adjust to your success.
Everyone in rap music screams, “Keep it real!” But do you honestly think Jay-Z has every member of the Marcy Projects still hanging with him? Do you really think that all of Michael Jordan’s crew from Wilmington, N.C., was sitting in Chapel Hill when he went to college? Or, for that matter, now sitting in one of his mansions?
With success comes change, and that change sometimes involves selecting better company. There’s an endless list of superstars, including Mike Tyson, Pacman Jones and Michael Vick, who haven’t been able to make wise decisions. That’s because they’re too concerned with trying to “keep it real.”
I have a new philosophy: Keep it right. It’s one thing to become successful. It’s another thing to maintain that success.

Indiana Pacers ' Coach Jim O'Brien said Thursday his version of Jamaal Tinsley's absence from Wednesday's game "is the story I'm sticking with."

O'Brien said before and after Wednesday's win over Golden State that Tinsley was inactive because of an injured left knee.

Several people with knowledge of the situation, however, said Tinsley was "suspended" and "disciplined" after an incident during the team's film session the previous day.

Thursday, O'Brien said he "deactivated" Tinsley.

"As an NBA coach I have the ability and the right to deactivate any player I want," O'Brien said after practice Thursday. "I deactivated Jamaal and Ike (Diogu).</td></tr></tbody></table>
