MLB Parlay for July 5: A Bet That Pays (+246)

Los Angeles Angels vs. Miami Marlins
Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at 6:40 p.m. ET at loanDepot park in Miami

Who Starts for the Angels?

Los Angeles starts Noah Syndergaard, also known as Thor, tonight.

Syndergaard has an extensive career history in Miami because he used to pitch in the same division as Miami when he was a Met.

However, this career history creates a misleading impression of Thor because it places exaggerated and unfair emphasis on prior years.

To be specific, Thor has not pitched in Miami since 2019. This is, stated simply, a long time ago.

2019 vs. Now

For starters, Miami is different. Whereas it ranked an awful 29thin 2019 in runs per game, this year it ranks a vastly more respectable 15thin the category.

Moreover, Thor is a different pitcher now than he was in 2019.

Most notably, he threw way harder back then, He was a veritable power pitcher.

His two favorite pitches back then, which were his sinker and four-seam fastball, both averaged over 97 mph.

This year, these two pitches average just over three mph fewer than they did in 2019.

Moreover, his pitching repertoire has changed.

His second favorite pitch is now his change-up. Thus, he has increased his change-up usage.

This change reflects his intent to become a craftier pitcher since he can no longer be the power pitcher that he used to be.

In a similar vein, he also throws his slider more often.

Thor vs. Marlin Batters

I like Marlin batters because they match up well against Thor given the pitches that he throws.

They rank eighth in slugging against his favorite pitches combined from righties.

Their ongoing five-game win streak has featured some nice individual hitting performances.

Watch out, among others, for ultra-consistent Garrett Cooper.

Miami's team BA leader is slugging .538 so far in July.

Who Pitches for Miami?

When one likes the Marlin lineup, then it's quite hard not to like Miami as a team when Sandy Alcantara is on the mound.

Alcantara is consistently excellent. He has allowed two earned runs or fewer in 10 of his last 11 starts.

The one exception came when he had to face the same lineup in consecutive starts.

In these 11 starts, he endured at least seven innings every time.

The Angels, meanwhile, bring dismal hitting form into today's game.

They haven't exceeded four runs in any of their last nine games.

Colorado Rockies vs. Los Angeles Dodgers
Tuesday, June 5, 2022 at 10:10 p.m. ET at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles

Who Pitches for Colorado?

Colorado starts German Marquez.

Marquez is facing the Dodgers a second consecutive time.

He has experienced in this situation -- in which he faces the same team in consecutive times -- multiple times in his career.

His game-by-game history shows that, in terms of FIP (like ERA but factors out fielding), he tends to either perform decently or well in both outings or he tends to perform very well in the first outing and then awfully in the second or awfully in the first and then excellently in the second.

Because he performed terribly in his last outing, history leads us to expect him to perform well tonight.

Ballpark History

Tonight, Marquez deserves even more optimism because of his strong career history in the Dodgers' ballpark.

In his career, he enjoys a 2.09 ERA in six starts in Dodger Stadium.

Who Starts for the Dodgers?

L.A. starts Mitch White tonight.

White has been a valuable component of both his team's starting rotation and bullpen.

He has proven capable of enduring five innings.

It is therefore important to know how well he matches up with Rockie batters.

Away from their extremely hitters-friendly home ballpark, they rank 30thin slugging against White's favorite pitches from righties.

After White leaves the game. the Dodgers will keep the contest low-scoring with their fifth-ranked bullpen.
