All Star Game Snub

az1538

Pretty much a regular
The MLB ASG continues to find new ways make itself more of a joke every year. Starting with the ridiculous rule that fans vote in players to a game that has vital World Series implications; which is really the punchline of the joke that is the ASG.

But when managers snub players, it's even worse. One of the best pitchers in baseball was snubbed from the ASG, and it's unfathomable that he was left out.

Here's a table of all the AL starting pitchers' stats, including the snubbed player. Of these 9, which 8 would you want starting in the ASG?

BPV = A number value assigned to the pitcher's overall skills-set. Anything above 100 is typically solid.
xERA = Similar to FIP (Field Independent Pitching). Basically what the pitcher's ERA should be if you took away all the factors that are out of the pitcher's control.

Table is sorted by BPV. Red, italicized is the snubbed pitcher.

I'll list who each pitcher is later.

I think Simon was a victim of the fashion that wins are meaningless.....most cases true, but he's been awesome...

no clue who the AL pitcher u speak of though

Didn't realize Simon was snubbed too (I'm an AL guy so I really don't care about the NL :)). That's crazy, though.

Someone has to be left out, it's inevitable that someone (usually a few players) are going to be 'snubbed.' It is what it is, this thread can be made every single year.

The fans usually do a pretty damn good job for the most part in the all-star voting though. Sure, there are a couple of players each year that probably don't deserve to start, but by and large, the fans get it right most of the time. It's also an exhibition, so MLB wants the players there that the fans want to see there.

What about Samardzija? He's going to not be at the game this year because he was just traded to the AL. It happens, not much you can do about it.

Quirk this year also that Samardzija earned his way to NL all stars....
But may be picked for AL all stars

He won't (he cannot) be picked for the AL all stars. He was named as an NL all star already, he just won't get to pitch.

That doesn't include Samardzija, selected as a National League All-Star. Major League Baseball said he is ineligible to play because of the league switch.

The 29-year-old right-hander, who was 2-7 with a 2.83 ERA and 103 strikeouts for the Cubs, won his American League debut Sunday when he allowed one run in seven innings for a 4-2 victory over Toronto. He will be introduced with the NL players before the All-Star game; still to be decided is whether he wears a Cubs or A's uniform - or a generic NL jersey.

DL stint for Sale hurt him but he'll end up on the roster somehow.

Yeah, you're probably right. That's another thing that usually gets taken care of, and leads to less 'snubs' each year...guys find their way onto the team as other players sit to rest if they're hurt or just pitched.

That's the entire problem with the ASG right there.

MLB wants all that, but MLB chose to make the game to not be an exhibition. The game has meaning. A lot of meaning. Home-field in the WS is HUGE. The ASG should not determine this, but since it does, fans should not have a vote. The "every team represented" rule is BS, too. I want Home Field; I want the best team I can put out there. And if that means a team gets snubbed, so be it.

The simple solution is to make the ASG meaningless as it should be; as all other ASGs in other sports are. Then all would be fine. Then it can be an exhibition.

Ok
Thanks
Guy deserves to pitch, but I guess since the game now means something him pitching for NL would provide a conflict of interest

Keith Law has a good article about how "known" players belong in the all star game compared to a few month superstars
