Goodbye to Romance College Football
I actually like to do this for me to revisit next summer so they are all listed in one place and I can see which impact players are back and which ones are gone.

It also can be referenced to scan down the namees on who the highly regarded players are for bowl season.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Atlantic Division champion Clemson leads the 2022 All-ACC Football Teams announced on Tuesday.

The Tigers filled a total of 12 spots on the first, second and third teams, with sophomore Will Shipley becoming the first-ever player to earn first-team honors at three positions with his selection at running back, all-purpose and specialist.

Pitt followed with nine selections, while Florida State and Coastal Division champion North Carolina had eight honorees apiece.

The All-ACC teams were chosen by a voting panel of 51 media members and each of the league’s 14 head coaches for a total of 65 voters. Three points were awarded for each first-team vote, two points for each second-team vote, and one point for each third-team selection.

Pitt running back Israel Abanikanda, the ACC’s leading rusher with 1,431 yards, was the top overall vote-getter with 187 total points. A pair of wide receivers – Boston College’s Zay Flowers and North Carolina’s Josh Downs – each collected 184 total points.

Abanikanda and Shipley (1,092 rushing yards) are joined in the All-ACC first-team backfield by North Carolina freshman quarterback Drake Maye, who currently leads the nation in total offense with 4,476 yards and earned 177 total points in the All-ACC balloting.

Flowers (1,077 yards and a league-high 12 TD receptions) and Downs (11 TD catches on an ACC-leading 83 catches and 92.9 receiving yards per game) are joined on the first-team receiving corps by Wake Forest’s A.T. Perry (70 receptions, 980 yards, 11 touchdowns). Syracuse’s Oronde Gadsden II is the first-team tight end after hauling in 54 passes for 891 yards and six TDs.

ACC Jacobs Blocking Trophy winner Jordan McFadden was the leading vote-getter among offensive linemen, and the Clemson standout is joined at the other first-team tackle position by Graham Barton of Duke.

Due to ties in the voting, three offensive guards earned 2022 All-ACC first-team honors – Florida State’s Dillan Gibbons (the ACC’s Jim Tatum Award winner as the league’s Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year), Pitt’s Marcus Minor and NC State’s Chandler Zavala. The center position is manned by NC State’s Grant Gibson, giving the Wolfpack two players on the first-team offensive front.

Florida State defensive end Jared Verse (163 points) and Pitt tackle Calijah Kancey (160) lead the defensive team voting. Each player registered 14.5 tackles for loss and 7.5 quarterback sacks during the regular season. They are joined on the front four by Clemson defensive end Myles Murphy and Tiger defensive tackle Tyler Davis.

North Carolina’s Cedric Gray (an ACC-leading 130 tackles), Louisville’s Yasir Abdullah, and Pitt’s SirVocea Dennis are the three top selections at linebacker.

NC State’s Aydan White and Virginia’s Anthony Johnson were selected as the first-team cornerbacks, with Miami’s Kam Kinchens (the ACC’s leader in interceptions with six) and Florida State’s Jammie Robinson at the safety spots.

With Clemson’s Shipley (30 receptions for 195 yards, 24.3 yards per kickoff return) selected at both all-purpose and special teams, NC State placekicker Christopher Dunn and Miami’s Lou Hedley complete the All-ACC first-team specialist corps.

Dunn (177 points in the voting) is the ACC’s all-time leading scorer and owns the nation’s top accuracy rate on field goals this season at 24-for-25. Hedley ranks third in the ACC in punting average (45.3) and placed 23 of his 47 attempts inside the opponents’ 20-yard line.

North Carolina’s Downs and Wake Forest’s Perry also earned first-team All-ACC offensive honors in 2021. Pitt’s Kancey, Clemson’s Davis and FSU’s Robinson are repeat selections on the All-ACC defensive first team.

PFF Highest-graded players at every position through the 2022 college football regular season

Quarterback

Power Five: Drake Maye, North Carolina Tar Heels | 91.6

Next up: Bryce Young, Alabama Crimson Tide | 91.3

Drake Maye entered 2022 with the tall task of following in the footsteps of Sam Howell, arguably the best quarterback North Carolina football has ever seen.

And not only has Maye held down the fort, but he’s also been arguably the best quarterback in the country. His 40 big-time throws are seven more than any other quarterback in college football. Maye’s also an incredible dual-threat signal-caller, as his 498 rushing yards after contact are the second-most among FBS quarterbacks.

Next up for the No. 24 Tar Heels is the ACC championship game against No. 10 Clemson.

Group of Five: Kurtis Rourke, Ohio Bobcats | 93.1

Next up: Frank Harris, UTSA Roadrunners | 91.4

Maye isn’t the only quarterback who’s filling big shoes.

Kurtis Rourke’s older brother, Nathan, ranks second in passing yards, second in passing touchdowns and tied for the most rushing touchdowns in Ohioprogram history.

Kurtis has followed his brother up nicely. He has a 92.1 passing grade, higher than any other quarterback in the country. Ohio plays Toledo in the MAC championship game this week.

Running Back

Power Five: Blake Corum, Michigan Wolverines | 95.9

Next up: Bijan Robinson, Texas Longhorns | 94.2

Blake Corum has a chance to post the highest-graded season by a Power Five player since PFF began charting college football in 2014.

Highest-graded seasons by a Power Five player in PFF College era (Since 2014)

NamePositionSchoolYearPFF Grade
Kyle PittsTight EndFlorida202096.0
Chase YoungEdge DefenderOhio State201996.0
Quinnen WilliamsInterior Defensive LinemanAlabama201896.0
Blake CorumRunning BackMichigan202295.9

All of those players were subsequently selected in the top five of their respective drafts. While positional value will likely preclude Corum from joining that group, it still shows how ridiculous of a season the junior has had. He has a chance to boost his grade in the Big Ten championship game on Saturday as second-ranked Michigan takes on Purdue.

Group of Five: DeWayne McBride, UAB Blazers | 92.5

Next up: Frank Gore Jr., Southern Miss Golden Eagles | 88.7

DeWayne McBride is one of the best tackle-breakers PFF has seen. His 36% career missed tackles forced percentage is the third-highest among FBS running backs since PFF began grading college football in 2014.

Most career missed tackles forced per attempt | FBS RBs since 2014, min. 300 attempts

NameSchoolYears PlayedMissed Tackles Forced Per Attempt
Javonte WilliamsNorth Carolina2018-20200.39
Bijan RobinsonTexas2020-present0.38
DeWayne McBrideUAB2020-present0.36

McBride’s 1,702 rushing yards this season currently lead the nation. He and the Blazers are currently waiting to find out what bowl game they’ll be playing in.

Wide Receiver

Power Five: Xavier Hutchinson, Iowa State Cyclones | 89.7

Next up: Marvin Harrison Jr., Ohio State Buckeyes | 89.6

Xavier Hutchinson has the third-most receiving yards in the Power Five this season. He’s also the ultimate chain-mover, as his 62 receiving first downs and touchdowns are six more than anyone else in the Power Five. Since Iowa State finished the season 4-8, the redshirt senior will now turn his attention to the 2023 NFL Draft.

Group of Five: Puka Nacua, BYU Cougars | 89.0

Next up: Jacoby Jones, Ohio Bobcats | 88.1

Puka Nacua has missed four games this season with various injuries, but he’s been one of the best receivers in the country when on the field. His 3.53 yards per route run are the most in college football. The junior, relied on to carry BYU’s passing game, has been targeted on 37.9% of his routes — the second-highest rate in the country. BYU now has to wait to find out who it’ll face in its bowl game.

Tight End

Power Five: Michael Mayer, Notre Dame Fighting Irish | 92.4

Next up: Dalton Kincaid, Utah Utes | 90.9

Michael Mayer is a top-15 prospect on PFF’s 2023 NFL Draft big board because he’s the most well-rounded tight end in college football.

The junior’s 91.6 receiving grade is the second-highest in the country for tight ends, while his 82.0 run-blocking grade is fourth. He leads all tight ends in target rate (30.4%) and contested catches (17). No. 19 Notre Dame is now waiting to see who it’ll play in its bowl game.

Group of Five: Joshua Lingenfelter, Army Black Knights | 92.4

Next up: Trent Thompson, UTEP Miners | 87.1

Since the Black Knights run the ball on 83% of their plays, their tight ends need to serve as de facto offensive linemen.

Joshua Lingenfelter has done that better than any other tight end in the country this season. His 87.1 run-blocking grade is nearly two points higher than second place at the position. At 5-6, Army’s game against Navy in two weeks won’t only be one of the biggest rivalry games, it’ll also determine whether the Black Knights will play in a bowl game.

Offensive Tackle

Power Five: Joe Alt, Notre Dame Fighting Irish | 91.8

Next up: Peter Skoronski, Northwestern Wildcats | 87.9

Joe Alt looks like the best offensive tackle prospect since Penei Sewell, and he can’t even be drafted until 2024.

The true sophomore’s 90.9 run-blocking grade is the highest among FBS offensive tackles. He also has allowed only a 1.4% pressure rate, tied for the third-lowest mark in the country for tackles. He and No. 19 Notre Dame must wait to find out who they play this postseason.

Group of Five: Kaleb Holcomb, Air Force Falcons | 92.7

Next up: Blake Freeland, BYU Cougars | 90.2

Air Force runs the ball on 88.6% of its plays, the highest rate in the country. Luckily for the Falcons, Kaleb Holcomb is a dominant run-blocker. The junior’s 90.8 run-blocking grade trails only Joe Alt among FBS tackles. Air Force finished the season 9-3 and is now waiting to see which bowl game it’ll be attending.

Offensive Guard

Power Five: O’Cyrus Torrence, Florida Gators | 89.0

Next up: Jackson Powers-Johnson, Oregon Ducks | 83.5

O’Cyrus Torrence told PFF’s Trevor Sikkema that when he entered the transfer portal he didn’t know if he’d be needed by head coach Billy Napier since the SEC was loaded with offensive linemen.

Not only has the Louisiana transfer joined the elite SEC offensive linemen, he stands alone as the best guard in college football. His 90.2 run-blocking grade is higher than any other guard in the country. The junior is now a top-35 prospect on PFF’s 2023 NFL Draft big board. Florida must now stand by to see who it’ll face in its bowl game.

Group of Five: Isaac Cochran, Air Force Falcons | 85.1

Next up: Christian Haynes, UConn Huskies | 84.4

Like his teammate Kaleb Holcomb, Isaac Cochran is a very good run-blocker. The senior sports an 83.4 run-blocking grade this season, which ranks third-highest among Group of Five guards. His 101 positively-graded run blocks are 14 more than any other guard in the country. Air Force now waits to see who it’ll play in its bowl game.

Center

Power Five: John Michael Schmitz, Minnesota Golden Gophers | 92.4

Next up: Brett Neilon, USC Trojans | 88.4

No player has dominated his position like John Michael Schmitz this season. The sixth-year senior’s 92.4 grade is over four points higher than the next-closest center.

Biggest grading gaps in college football

NamePositionSchoolGradeGap to 2nd
John Michael SchmitzCenterMinnesota92.44 points
O’Cyrus TorrenceOffensive GuardFlorida89.03.9 points
Dontay CorleoneInterior Defensive LinemanCincinnati93.91.7 points

In particular, Schmitz’s 92.7 run-blocking grade is more than six points clear of the next-closest center. His 12 big-time blocks are the most in the country at the position. Minnesota now waits to find out its bowl game.

Group of Five: Willie Lampkin, Coastal Carolina Chanticleers | 78.3

Next up: Branson Hickman, SMU Mustangs | 77.8

Willie Lampkin has been a stud in the middle of the Chanticleers’ offensive line. The junior’s 79.3 run-blocking grade is the highest among Group of Five centers this season. Coastal Carolina is at Troy in the Sun Belt championship game on Saturday.

Interior Defensive Lineman

Power Five: Calijah Kancey, Pittsburgh Panthers | 91.5

Next up: Kobie Turner, Wake Forest Demon Deacons | 91.1

Calijah Kancey is the best Pittsburgh defensive lineman since Aaron Donald.

Like Donald, Kancey is undersized (6-foot, 280 pounds) but he doesn’t let that stop him from terrorizing quarterbacks. The redshirt junior’s 92.1 pass-rushing grade over the past three seasons is higher than any other interior defensive lineman in college football. His 18.1% pressure rate this season also leads the position. Pittsburgh’s next contest will be its bowl game.

Group of Five: Dontay Corleone, Cincinnati Bearcats | 93.9

Next up: Levi Bell, Texas State Bobcats | 92.2

While Kancey is the best pass-rushing interior defensive lineman in college football, Dontay Corleone holds the crown as the best run-defender.

The redshirt freshman’s 94.8 run-defense grade is nearly two points higher than any other defender in college football. His 27 run stops are tied for the fifth-most in the country. At 9-3, Cincinnati is now looking toward its bowl game.

Edge Defender

Power Five: Bralen Trice, Washington Huskies | 88.2

Next up: Nick Herbig, Wisconsin Badgers | 87.1

Bralen Trice has been arguably the best pass-rusher in the country this season.

The sophomore leads the nation in pressures (64), pass-rush win rate (29%) and pressure rate (23.2%). Ninth-ranked Washington now must wait to see what bowl game it’ll be heading to.

Group of Five: Karl Brooks, Bowling Green Falcons | 92.2

Next up: D’Anthony Jones, Houston Cougars | 90.8

Karl Brooks has lived in the backfield this season. His 62 pressures trail only Bralen Trice, while his 12 sacks put him behind only Alabama's Will Anderson Jr. Bowling Green’s next outing will be its bowl game.

Linebacker

Power Five: Jack Campbell, Iowa Hawkeyes | 91.8

Next up: SirVocea Dennis, Pittsburgh Panthers | 91.2

Jack Campbell's 92.9 coverage grade is the highest in the country by nearly two points. The senior’s 16 coverage stops are tied for the second-most among Power Five linebackers. His 85.4 run-defense grade is also tied for seventh among linebackers in the Power Five. Iowa now awaits its bowl game.

Group of Five: Ivan Pace Jr., Cincinnati Bearcats | 93.2

Next up: Jailin Walker, James Madison Dukes | 91.1

After dominating at Miami (OH), Ivan Pace Jr. transferred to Cincinnati and has continued his elite play. The senior's 42 pressures lead all linebackers in the country. He also has 90.0-plus grades as both a pass-rusher and run-defender, the only linebacker in the nation to accomplish that feat. The Bearcats’ next game will be their bowl game.

Cornerback

Power Five: Devon Witherspoon, Illinois Fighting Illini | 91.4

Next up: Mekhi Blackmon, USC Trojans | 87.9

Devon Witherspoon has locked down the outside for the Fighting Illini this season. His 91.8 coverage grade is the highest in the Power Five for cornerbacks.

The junior’s 10.8% first down/touchdown allowed percentage is the lowest in college football at the position. He also has 19 combined interceptions and forced incompletions, more than any other defender. Illinois now waits to find out its bowl game opponent.

Group of Five: Quinyon Mitchell, Toledo Rockets | 91.7

Next up: Reddy Steward, Troy Trojans | 90.3

Quinyon Mitchell is an absolute ballhawk. The sophomore has 18 combined interceptions and forced incompletions, trailing only Devon Witherspoon among all defenders in college football. His 91.9 coverage grade also leads all FBS cornerbacks. Toledo takes on Ohio this Saturday for the MAC championship.

Safety

Power Five: Kamren Kinchens, Miami (FL) Hurricanes | 90.2

Next up: Kaevon Merriweather, Iowa Hawkeyes | 88.0

Kamren Kinchens is the Power Five’s highest-graded safety as just a sophomore, flashing incredible potential.

His 90.7 coverage grade is the highest in the FBS among safeties. He also has six interceptions this season, tied for the most in the country. Since the Hurricanes finished the year 5-7, we’ll have to wait until next season to see Kinchens back in action.

Group of Five: Jay Stanley, Southern Miss Golden Eagles | 90.6

Next up: Kam Pedescleaux, Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns | 89.1

Jay Stanley is arguably the most well-rounded safety in the country. He’s the only FBS safety with top-35 grades both in coverage and as a run-defender. Both of the junior’s grades rank in the top 15. Southern Miss now awaits its bowl game.
