Line value and matchup analysis are two different things, and 11 months before Christmas and 2 months before spring ball, they are both speculative at best. But I would say in terms of lines, things will move towards...

Auburn
Texas, this one is close, and could break either way. Probably a good number where it currently sits.
UNC
Oklahoma, wow, tough one, though I think it gets to 7 or 8. Hard to see Houston's PR any higher than it was this year, but maybe give them a point for the locale of the game.
WVU
LSU
UCLA, feels PKish, maybe +/-1 either way.
USC
FSU, not a lot of room for movement.

In terms of matchups based on what I think the teams will look like and correlating strengths and weaknesses...

Have to lean Auburn as a home dog here. Its a true home game, no Georgia Dome stuff, they bring back most of the LOS and their QB play cannot metaphysically be worse. Defense will be better and healthy in week 1. Conversely, I expect Clemson's defense to fall off somewhat. Same thing happened to FSU a few years ago, they lost a bunch of guys (post 2012), reloaded (2013) lost a bunch more the next year, and then fell off the map defensively (2014). Sometimes it takes these big programs two full years of attrition before the full effects are really felt. As good as Venables is and and as good as Swinney has recruited, they will feel the impact this year. QB edge and RB edge will certainly be noteworthy for Clemson, but I expect Auburn to be absolutely primed for this one.

Texas/ND, I guess if I think the current number is right then I don't really have an opinion. Maybe an under.

UNC, could get their doors blown off physically, but I expect them to compete and maybe even win. Can't put it all on Chubb, have to have other options. Off-season development of the UGA QB position will say a lot about this matchup. UNC offense should be dynamic again and their defense which improved as time went on doesn't lose much either. Maybe my buddy Pstone will see this and give his stat, but rookie head coaches making a debut, are almost universally horrible in the favorites role.

I could only play Oklahoma, but I won't as I hate Bob Stoops. There is just no way they shouldn't be able to cover a touchdown against the less physical team. Offenses won't be all that far apart, defensively OU should have an edge. No play unless they make the total too low.

Missouri is who I would look to play I think. WVU is a terrible favorite with the way they play "defense" and Skyler needs to undergo some pretty major improvements at the QB position before their offense can be reliably dangerous rather than just sporadically explosive. Missouri will be healthier on defense, at least in week 1 and there won't be any nonsense or distractions. I expect them to find a way to hang in. Whether it is Locke or not, they have to find someone who can throw, and equally important, someone who can catch. They missed having good WR play last year for the first time in yeeeeaaaaars.

I think LSU should be able to do something similar to Wisconsin, as what Alabama did in last year's season opener, but I think for one reason or another they probably won't. Tiger front seven needs to improve, and Wiscy OL should be better this year. They weren't the dominant group we've all become accustomed to, maybe a healthy and focused Clement will be what the doctor ordered. QB will be an adventure for the Badgers. This spread almost has to close north of a touchdown barring something strange with Harris or LF. I like that it is at Lambeau, that could be a sneaky edge for the Badgers.

I find the UCLA/A&M result impossible to forecast this far our, and I won't be involved in all likelihood, but I expect a close game and a closer line.

Love USC to be the first team from a major conference to keep it close with Bama in one of these season openers/early season contests. Usually it ends up being a Tide blowout. I see lots of reasons why this will be different, but mostly because USC won't have a head coach with his head up his ass, and because this will be the most talented team Bama has faced in one of these games in at least the last 6 years. NFL players all over both rosters, no cause for this game to go off at some huge number.

This is one game where I see a vast difference between the line and the likely result. OM loses tons and tons of offensive talent, and a few key defensive pieces too. Although Freeze has them at a replacement level more or less, there are going to be too many new faces to be clicking in the first game. Compared to FSU who brings back (I think) the entire OL, the QB who will have to hold off another talented kid, and maybe the country's best RB. That offense will be solid from the get-go. On the other side, FSU's defense is going to be really really nasty and their front will embarrass the OM OL. I could see a solid under play here too, but I really like the FSU side. I don't have a problem with the line which is generated presumably from a PR-viewpoint, and it may not move off this current 5 by more than a point or two when all is said and done, but I think the matchup is one-sided and I expect FSU to win by a couple touchdowns.

The whole transitive property thing of course doesn't work but...Bama laid Wisky to waste in this past season's opener. Wisky then went on to beat SC and all of their NFL talent in the bowl game in their backyard. Wisky bodied SC at the LOS and had they not lost Clement in the 2nd half and had they not gotten railroaded with a horrific out of bounds score that took 7 off the board then the final score wouldn't have been as close as it was. Wisky had a huge statistical advantage in TOP and the run game. Stave looked comfortable passing for maybe the first time in his life. If you get pushed around by a mediocre version of Wisconsin...good luck against Bama.

I saw nothing last year from Helton that impressed me. Very conservative, ball control offense which I'd expect to even be more conservative this year without their senior heisman candidate qb. Teams that play a straight ahead pro-style, run it in your face ball control offense tend to get mashed by Bama. It's hard to beat Bama at their own game especially without a talent edge or physicality edge. And certainly not a coaching edge. Kiffin calling plays against his old team will certainly be an interesting story line. I think Bama gets up for this matchup against a big name school far more than they did vs Va Tech and Wisky. And those were both easy covers.

Clemson's defense will undoubtedly take a significant step back, but at the same time the offense will be much better next year. I would not feel comfortable taking a six-point dog if I knew that the opponent would have at least 31 points at halftime. And that is likely in this one.

Phife, I'm forming no conclusions whatsoever on Helton or his players in the last half of a lost season. This will be a fresh start and I expect a solid performance. Browne (or the new kid) will be at least as good as any QB Bama will run out there and the USC OL will be healthy for the first time since last spring. Both teams lose quite a bit from the front seven while having talented secondaries. Not dissimilar teams with respect to strengths and weaknesses. Talent of the starters is not far apart at all, arguably a slight edge to the Tide. Bama will have much better depth still for a couple seasons, but that is useless in week 1.

I thought I'd post this to give you something to think about in the offseason. FYI I've got over 30 coaching / Coordinator
changes that I'm tracking for this coming season.

I typically will not wager on games with coaching / QB changes until I see them in action , and would not bet these early lines.

Since I live in Las Vegas , I will wait until the Nugget hangs their GOY's in June and the Books here posts their lines.

What about the true season opener on August 27?

For what It's worth , I'm a Hawai'i Warriors fan as O'ahu is my second home.I'm glad to see they've
hired Nick Rolovich as their Head Coach . He's an ex UH Quarterback and OC . He was also the OC at
Nevada. There is much work to do to unscrew up what Norm Chow left, but I believe players will play
for Nick and hopefully he'll convince more good players to stay at home in coming years.

As far as Cal , They've lost Jared Goff to graduation, plus 3 WR's as well as 2 DB's they return 4 Off / 6 def starters.
They have also lost their Offensive Coordinator and replaced him with J. Spavital ( Ex QB coach from Tx A&M )
Don't know why Spavital left the Aggies,but Sumlin running off his QB's probably had something to do with it.
Goff's backup was 10 of 18 for 162 yds. and a 1 /1 TD / int. so he lacks any beneficial game experience.
Cal will struggle early on offense , and Hawai'i will struggle on " D "

There is no way I would bet this game.

Most of these do not look particularly attractive to me at these prices and at the ( - 120 ). I'm thinking that we'll get some better numbers
on some of these in June when the Nugget hangs their GOY 's. There are a number of teams on this list that lost their Quarterback to
graduation from last year , as well as one team who lost their entire Defensive Secondary. I know what numbers I want to see and it will be
interesting to see how the Books view these teams for their week 1 opener.
