Team Analysis: The Sabres' earned three one-goal victories over the New York Islanders in the first round, but the scores were hardly a tell-tale sign of how they performed in the series. They dominated the Islanders. The Sabres rolled out all four lines with ease and wore down their opposition with speed and skill. Dainius Zubrus, Chris Drury, Brian Campbell and Daniel Briere led the attack with five points each, while Maxim Afinogenov, Thomas Vanek and Jason Pominville kept the Islanders on their heels with their up-tempo skating and playmaking abilities. The Sabres also boasted a solid defence, as Buffalo's blueliners beat New York's sharpshooters down the ice and forwards like Drury always positioned themselves well to take scoring chances away. The Buffalo blueline was also fine-tuned, scoring four of the team's first six goals (Lydman, Kalinin and Campbell) in the series. But once again, it was skating and puck control that made guys like Teppo Numminen, Henrik Tallinder, and Jaroslav Spacek tough to beat in their own zone. The last line of defence lies with netminder Ryan Miller, and the sophomore star was nothing short of spectacular. Miller made several breathtaking stops in the third period of Game 5, holding off a resilient Islanders offence that kept peppering him with shots.

Team Analysis: Any struggles and pitfalls that the Rangers endured in the regular season certainly didn't surface in their first-round series with the Thrashers. The Rangers swept an underachieving Atlanta team in four straight games, playing perfect defensive hockey and getting scoring from just about everyone. Michael Nylander, who's more of a playmaker than a big shooter, scored a hat trick in Game 3. Jaromir Jagr ranks second in team scoring with seven points, while Brendan Shanahan was second behind Nylander in goals scored (3). And it doesn't stop there. Sean Avery has proven to be as effective a hockey player as he is an agitator, and rookie scorer Ryan Callahan has also been a clutch player. The contributions on defence were just as impressive. Fedor Tyutin, who scored just 14 points in the regular season, tallied five assists while Michal Rozsival and Thomas Pock each tallied three points. Henrik Lundqvist put up pristine numbers, with a 1.50 goals-against average and .939 save percentage.

Lessons of ’06 benching serving Vanek well

<!-- End /PubSys/Story/EmailPrintAbout.comp --><!--endclickprintexclude-->There’s no telling what to expect when Thomas Vanek has the puck and last spring that was precisely the problem.
Vanek was a lost soul during his first trip through the Stanley Cup playoffs. Indecisive. Uncertain. Fearful of making a crucial mistake. His erratic play led the Buffalo Sabres to give him the night off in 10 of their 18 postseason games and dress Taylor Pyatt or Jiri Novotny in his place.
It’s not unusual for a young player to meander aimlessly during the postseason, particularly offensive-minded talents of Vanek’s ilk. They’re ordered to pay increased attention to the defensive side of the game. They fret an error in judgment could cost their team a goal, which dulls their creative instincts. Instead of reacting they ponder, often to the point of paralysis, which renders them useless — and expendable.
“Every game is a big game [in the playoffs],” Vanek said before Game Five of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals. “In a 82-game schedule, maybe you have a bad game or something and then you play the next night and you can regroup. If you don’t play as well in one [postseason] game, one game will cost you a series. It’s just being more consistent.”
There was little doubt that Vanek had the makeup to withstand the postseason heat. He was The Show when the University of Minnesota won the 2003 Frozen Four at HSBC Arena, scoring in overtime in the semifinals, netting the winner in the title game, dazzling all the way. Logic suggested he had played himself beyond the reach of the Sabres, who held the fifth pick in that year’s entry draft. How could four teams possibly take a pass? But pass on him they did, and the Gopher that Buffalo hockey fans had come to covet in the Frozen Four has emerged from his playoff doldrums in emphatic fashion.
The winning goal of Buffalo’s series-clinching 4-3 victory over the New York Islanders was vintage Vanek. He burst down the left wing in full stride, leading a two-on-three with Derek Roy on his flank and Maxim Afinogenov trailing. Vanek went wide at the faceoff circle, ridding himself of defenseman Tom Poti, and angled in as if poised to snap a shot. As the Isles converged atop the crease, Vanek funneled a pass through the mass and dead onto the stick of the lurking Afinogenov. Who knew the goal, good for a 4-1 Sabres lead, would become their lifeboat at game’s end?
Vanek played 11 minutes, 42 seconds in Game Five, the lowest total of any Sabre forward outside of Adam Mair (7:03). Vanek responded by averaging a team-high 58 seconds a shift, which could be interpreted as a plea for more ice time. But don’t get the wrong idea. A tug-of-war it’s not.
Ruff often parcels out time based on game situations, matchups and his sense of who’s firing and who isn’t. Vanek averaged 15 minutes through the first four games of the series. He tied for second in the team in series scoring with two goals and two assists. A breakout 43-goal regular-season, supplemented by a league-high 47 plusminus rating, sent him into the postseason brimming with a confidence last possessed during his freshman season at Minnesota. This time, he was playoff-ready.
“It’s a learning process and I think he learned from that last year,” Daniel Briere said after Game Five. “I was very impressed with his last game in New York, the effort he put in. It was just an all-around great game on his part. And tonight he made another great play on Max’s goal. Everybody was expecting him to just drop it right when he got inside the blue line. And I think Poti expected that too. Next thing you knew he was around him and that’s when he dropped it, when everybody thought he was going to take it to the net. That’s what Thomas is all about. You never know what to expect when he’s coming down on you. And that’s one of his biggest strengths.”
“It just seems like he’s a man on a mission,” Roy said. “He’s working really hard both ends of the ice and it seems like he’s been doing that since training camp. He’s growing as a player every game.”
Dismay blanketed Vanek’s face as he thought back to last spring. He’d played in all but one regular-season game, scored 25 goals, then was left to contemplate how he’d fallen so fast.
“I think it’s hard for any athlete, watching, especially after you help your team get into the playoffs,” he said. “The way it went last year I didn’t want it to go. But it happened and it’s in the past. I had a strong year this year and I just want to continue that in the playoffs.”

Sabres preparing for balanced attack from Jagr and Co.

<!-- End /PubSys/Story/EmailPrintAbout.comp --><!--endclickprintexclude-->Jaromir Jagr has a plan. The Buffalo Sabres are standing in the way of it.
The matchups for the Eastern Conference semifinals were completed Sunday, and the Sabres learned their tour of the Big Apple will continue. After eliminating the New York Islanders in the first round, the Sabres will face the New York Rangers in the next best-of-seven matchup.
The schedule had yet to be released late Sunday, but Game One will be either Wednesday or Thursday night in HSBC Arena. According to NBC, which will televise weekend games, Game Two is 3 p.m. Saturday in the arena.
It’s been nearly five months since the teams last played each other, but it shouldn’t take long for the hostilities to be renewed. The top-seeded Sabres swept the regular-season series, 4-0, but only one game was decided in regulation. Buffalo won twice in overtime and earned a shootout victory in the final meeting Dec. 1.
The Rangers were a pedestrian 13-9-4 after that loss, but they’ve steadily improved and find themselves in a full sprint. They are 17-3-4 in their last 24 games, including a four-game sweep of Atlanta in the opening round.
“They’re a balanced attack,” Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said Sunday. “It’s come from a lot of different places. They’ve got younger guys that have been in the scoring department, but I think it’s overall balance. They’ve played sound defensively, and their goaltender has been very good.”
The sixth-seeded Rangers are paced by Jagr, who figures to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer when he hangs up his skates. The 35-year-old won back-to-back Stanley Cups with Pittsburgh during his first two seasons. Mario Lemieux did the bulk of that work, and Jagr wants to return the favor to the youngsters on his team.
“I love the players I am playing with,” Jagr said last week. “When I was young, Mario gave me the Cup. I always wanted to help the younger guys like Mario helped me.”
The Rangers were Exhibit A in the NHL’s case to change its salary system. They bid high for free agents, and they bid often. But when the salary cap was implemented prior to last season, it forced New York to mix younger players with a few veterans. It worked. The Rangers last year made the playoffs for the first time since 1997, but a shoulder injury to Jagr sent them home after four games.
They’ve added three-time Cup winner Brendan Shanahan and pest Sean Avery to a lineup that includes sensational second- year goaltender Henrik Lun dqvist and blossoming forwards Petr Prucha and Ryan Callahan, a Rochester native.
“We’re kind of rewriting the personality of the New York Rangers,” said Shanahan, 38. “It’s a lot more like a New York fan.
“The diversity on this team and the hard work was what brought us success. We’ve got some pluggers, some small guys who are gritty, some old grizzled guys who are still hanging around, and we got guys from different cultures and different backgrounds.”
How the Sabres fare against Lundqvist will be one key to the series. He beat Sabres goalie Ryan Miller for a spot on the All-Rookie team last season, and he went 37-22-8 this season with a 2.34 goals-against average and .917 save percentage. But he played just once against the Sabres, losing, 3-2, in overtime.
Jagr’s center, Michael Nylander, torched Atlanta in the first round. He had four goals and four assists in the four games. Jagr was right behind with seven points on two goals and five assists.
“The last 20 or 30 games of the regular season, the way we played, we can play anybody,” Jagr said.
They’ll get their chance against the NHL’s top team from the regular season, a squad in search of the perfect game. The Sabres beat the Islanders in just five games, but they repeatedly said they want to get better. They spent part of Sunday’s practice in the Amherst Pepsi Center working toward that.
“We expect a lot more out of ourselves, and people expect more out of ourselves,” co-captain Daniel Briere said. “We realize that. We have to be better. We know we have to be better if we want to move on and go far in the playoffs.”
