Injury & Roster News

Head coach Justin Wilcox gave a brief injury update to start his news conference Tuesday, and the news was so-so.

“Kekoa (Crawford) likely will be back with us this weekend,” Wilcox said. “And Kuony (Deng) right now it would be doubtful. We’ll have some more definitive news on Thursday.”

Crawford, the senior wide receiver, and Deng, the outside linebacker, have both been limited to two games. As much as Crawford is valued, the Bears have enough depth at wide receiver to weather his absence. Deng, however, was projected as a leader of the defense and an honors candidate. Plus the Bears are a little thin at the position.

Sometimes players missing matters and sometimes they don't. I don't let injury news swing me or talk me into or out of something, I will let it play a role how much I like it or don't like it.

LB Kuony Deng is probably their best player on D after DL Johnson went out in the spring. They moved Deng outside after he had been playing inside, Wilcox said doing so "makes us a better defense". No Deng hurts Cal. If I liked Cal for other reasons, I'm not going to change my mind because a LB is out. It is just something to be aware of, they aren't full strength there. Or if I liked Washington, it could mean UW O has a better chance for success, but his replacement can make plays so you never know.

Swinney clarifies it's Shipley's shin/tibia area. He'll be on crutches for a couple weeks and work back in after that. "Could be three weeks, could be four weeks. All I know is he's going to be back at some point, which is a huge positive. ... We were expecting the worse there."

From Miami Herald story posted within last hour;

With King expected to be out with a shoulder injury, all indications point to Van Dyke making his second straight start — and his first career start against an FBS opponent.

Miami HC Martin was optimistic that third-year sophomore quarterback Brett Gabbert and fifth-year senior running back Jaylon Bester might be back on Saturday after missing the Eastern Michigan game with injuries. “Both of them are getting better,” Martin said. “They’re active and moving around, not just standing around. They’re doing everything they can to get ready. They’re pushing to get ready. If they’re not ready by Saturday, they’ll be really close to being ready.”
^RB Jaylon Bester was #1 rusher 2019, DNP 2020 and has only played in one game this year. Gabbert and Mayer split time at QB.

Three trainers popped it back into place, UNM coach Danny Gonzales said during his virtual press conference. X-rays showed no fracture to his arm. Gonzales is hopeful Wilson will be ready to play against Colorado State next week, but if Wilson is not ready to go, the starter is not yet determined, but it will most likely be between CJ Montes, Trae Hall and Isaiah Chavez.

Just before Purdue cornerback Cory Trice was scheduled to return, the junior suffered another injury.

Trice sustained a knee injury in last week’s practice, and it's been determined that the Kentucky native suffered an ACL tear and will be lost for the season. Trice missed the last three games after suffering a high ankle sprain in practice leading up to the Sept. 18 matchup at Notre Dame.

Trice was in uniform for the Oct. 2 loss to Minnesota but didn’t play. He was scheduled to be in the lineup Saturday when the Boilermakers face No. 2 Iowa at Kinnick Stadium.

MAC's leading rusher, NIU Harrison Waylee missed last week and may be out long term. He has 101att-574y on the year. NIU's #2 and #3 RB is a FR with 40att and 24att. Then they have a FB Ratkovich they like to use at times.

Utah senior long-snapper Keegan Markgraf has suffered an unspecified season-ending injury.

Whittingham called it “a big blow” to his team. “Keegan is a captain, one of our leaders. That says something when one of our special teams guys is voted captain because that’s not really common,” he said. “He’s unfortunately done for the year. He was a big part of our special teams the last few years.”
^ A 214 lb Fr will take over, was the top ranked long snapper in California, but still just a Freshman

James Franklin said #PennState QB reps will be split this week between Ta’Quan Roberson and Christian Veilleux. Implying Sean Clifford might not play vs Illinois.

Starting running back Cam’Ron Harris is out for the rest of the season after sustaining a right knee injury during Miami’s 45-42 loss to the University of North Carolina

Based on this Instagram post, it seems that Northwestern receiver Bryce Kirtz's 2021 season is over. In 5 games, Kirtz posted 19 receptions for 203 yards, both of which were career highs. The redshirt sophomore emerged as an excellent complement to Stephon Robinson Jr.

Colorado HC Karl Dorrell said WR Vontae Shenault is practicing, but as of today "it's one more game" for Shenault's suspension #cubuffs

Kiffin said Matt Corral is "not in good shape" the last couple of days since the Tennessee game and does not feel good about him playing Saturday against LSU as of right now. #OleMiss

#Vols coach Josh Heupel: I don’t think Hendon’s injury is a longterm injury. He and Cade and Tiyon are all day-to-day.

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly said Monday that Coan will start Week 8 against USC, but the Fighting Irish plan to mix in Tyler Buchner at quarterback behind him, Heather Dinich of ESPN.com reports. "Jack Coan continues to be the guy that we feel like gives us the best chance to win, and a mixture of him with Tyler Buchner," Kelly said. "Drew [Pyne] has done some really good things for us, and if we feel like we're in a situation where we need to call on him, we would, but I think right now, as we look at it, it's probably in my mind that Jack will start and we'll continue to get Tyler more playing time."

Casey Thompson is the starting QB for the #Longhorns going forward, per Sark. #HookEm

UNLV football coach Marcus Arroyo at his weekly press conference said quarterback Doug Brumfield is still day-to-day with a back injury. Backs can be tricky and team wants to be cautious. Quarterback Cameron Friel will likely be limited today. Hopeful that he can play Thursday.

USC announces that Zeb Noland will undergo a "minor surgical procedure Tuesday morning for a meniscus tear in his right knee. He is expected to be available for the Florida game on Nov. 6."

Dorian Thompson-Robinson still listed as QB1 on the depth chart UCLA released for this week.

UCLA QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson is dressed for practice but not throwing like the other QBs are. A lot of left-handed motion throwing. Glove on right (throwing) hand.

Alton Julian will miss the rest of this season with a knee injury, Nick Daschel reports.
^3rd leading tackler on team

Tyler Davis is back.

Clemson’s junior defensive tackle returned to the lineup during the team’s 27-17 loss at Pitt on Saturday.

Washington RB Richard Newton tore his ACL against UCLA and is having surgery today. LB Eddy Ulofoshio had an arm injury against UCLA, had surgery last week and is also out for the year.

#CUBuffs receiver La'Vontae Shenault has been reinstated and will play against Oregon this Saturday.

“I don’t want to get into the specifics, because there’s a lot of moving pieces here, but I can tell you there’s some confidence here that we’ll have him back,”

Army QB Christian Anderson returned vs Wake Forest, but then departed Saturday's game against due to injury

The injury bug has taken another big bite out of the N.C. State football program. Junior linebacker Isaiah Moore will miss the season for the Wolfpack, head coach Dave Doeren announced on Monday. Graduate offensive lineman Chandler Zavala, who missed the last two games, is also done for the season. Moore, a captain, is the fourth starter on defense done for the year. “That to me was the biggest loss of the game,” Doeren said. “Losing a player of that magnitude, a leader of that magnitude.”

Clemson has lost three more players for the season:

DE Justin Foster
G Matt Bockhorst
TE Braden Galloway

Brockhorst the best OL? And Galloway a pretty good TE?
Parks (RT) is the best, but both tackles are probably better than Bock.

Galloway is awful. He was the starter till a couple games ago, but he got demoted. Can’t block or catch this year. Allen better on both counts plus Ennis and Briningstool look promising.

Some speculation Chris Reynolds is hurt (Charlotte QB). Dislocated finger or something. Healy said at press conference he is fine and practiced Monday. Somebody said they watched Monday practice and he didn't practice. Healy may be trying to keep it under wraps who is playing.

@pressitup do you know the name James Foster (QB was originally A&M)

USC wideout Drake London will miss the rest of the season with a fractured ankle, interim coach Donte Williams confirmed.
^ enormous piece of USC's offense, they very heavily rely upon him and he is one of the best receivers in the country

Garbers was impressive in his bid to help the Bruins beat the Utes for the first time since 2015. He showed composure under heavy pressure and some elusiveness running. He completed 27 of 44 passes for 265 yards with two touchdowns and one interception on a tipped pass.
^ DTR was suited up, but Garbers got his first career start after finishing up the week prior vs Oreong.

2019 3-star QB Cornelious Brown IV has entered the transfer portal after passing for 2,792 yards and 17 TD at Georgia State; also rushed for 364 yards and 9 TD
^had become backup QB, but need to watch now if current starting QB Grainger goes down

Brennan Armstrong walked off the field grimacing and pointing to his rib cage, telling #UVA coaches, “It’s broken.”
^Jay Woolfolk went 2-5-35-0-0 after Armstrong left.

#Gophers running back Bryce Williams suffered a season-ending injury vs. Northwestern; he is the third Minnesota tailback to be lost during this year.
^ Irving ran 19-110 and Thomas had 21-106 vs NW so they still have guys

McCulley completed 14 of 25 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns in the game versus Maryland on Saturday.
^Indiana QB leads Indiana to 35 points! He should probably QB the rest of the season even if other guys get healthy, Penix included.

Connor Bazelak's injury is probably a soft tissue injury, per coach Drinkwitz. Said the decision to turn to Macon was "situational." Might've gone with Cook in a different situation.
^ left Vandy game with ankle injury

TCU QB Max Duggan was 9-for-13 passing for 73 yards before being benched in the third quarter of Saturday's 31-12 loss at Kansas State.

MTSU QB Chase Cunningham left with injury first quarter, Mike DiLiello came in and did very well 8-12-78-0-0, rushed 11x-77-2TD.

Cardinal coach David Shaw characterized McKee’s status as “questionable” on Tuesday. Shaw does not talk about specific injuries, and he did not disclose the reason for McKee’s potential absence. McKee played to the end of Saturday’s 20-13 loss to Washington, throwing an interception on a desperation heave with six seconds left as Stanford (3-5, 2-4) lost its third straight game.

“We’ll see over the next day or so if he’s going to be ready to go,” Shaw said. “Hopefully this gets resolved sooner than later, but as coaches we just prepare for every eventuality.”

McKee leads the Pac-12 with five games with at least three touchdowns. He’s completed 64.8 percent of his passes for 14 TDs and five INTs, and is 84 yards from becoming the third freshman in program history to reach 2,000 passing yards, following Andrew Luck (2009) and Chad Hutchinson (1996). If McKee is unavailable, Shaw said that both Jack West and option QB Isaiah Sanders would play.
Whoever starts at QB should at least benefit from the return of Michael Wilson, who entered the season as Stanford’s most heralded receiver. Wilson is expected to make his season debut on Friday after being out with an undisclosed injury.

Colorado will likely play without star inside linebacker Nate Landman for another week, at least.

On Monday, head coach Karl Dorrell said Landman is doubtful to play when the Buffaloes (2-6, 1-4 Pac-12) host Oregon State (5-3, 3-2) on Saturday at Folsom Field (5 p.m., TV: Pac-12 Network).

Landman suffered an unspecified injury late in the Buffs’ 26-3 loss at California on Oct. 23 and did not play in last Saturday’s 52-29 loss at Oregon. It is unclear if or when he will return to the lineup.

“I want to make sure he’s healthy,” Dorrell said. “I’m not going to put him at risk. Even though he would probably try to play with one arm if it was up to him, I’m not going to let him do that. So I just don’t want to put guys at risk doing that. So we’re going to treat it week to week. He’s feeling better, but … I would say he’s doubtful this week to play.”

Holmberg injury hits hard
Duke starting quarterback Gunnar Holmberg suffered what Duke called an upper-body injury late in the first half and did not return to the game after being taken for X-rays. That’s a significant blow for Duke’s offense. The 6-3, 205-pound Holmberg was injured while being sacked. His left shoulder (non-throwing side) hit the turf under the weight of two Pitt defenders and the X-rays were to examine his clavicle and ribs. Prior to his injury, Holmberg completed 16-of-23 passes for 174 yards with a touchdown on Saturday. For the season, he is 178-of-257 passing (69.2%) for 2,034 yards with seven touchdown passes and six interceptions. He’s also run for six touchdowns. True freshman Riley Leonard took over as Duke’s quarterback when Holmberg went down. He showed some promise, leading a scoring drive that culminated with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Mataeo Durant. But Leonard’s overall performance was mediocre as he completed 6-of-13 passes for 63 yards with the one touchdown and one interception.

Redshirt sophomore Grayson McCall did not play today in Statesboro, Georgia, due to an upper body injury and is “out indefinitely,” according to CCU assistant athletic director for media relations Kevin Davis. Senior Bryce Carpenter started at quarterback Saturday. “It is our interpretation that this is a long-term thing. Hopefully we get him back before the end of the season,” CCU head coach Jamey Chadwell told WRNN 99.5 FM. “. . . We don’t know exactly how long he’ll take to get back. It’s really unfortunate for him and unfortunate for our team."
Getting the start in place of the injured Grayson McCall, senior quarterback Bryce Carpenter was 13-for-20 for 85 yards and a score in the passing game and rushed 13 times for 44 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

If Bean is out and Jalon Daniels is QB1, walk-on Miles Fallin will be the backup QB. #KUfball

Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian said WR Joshua Moore intends to enter the transfer portal. He is no longer with the team.
^#3 receiver this year, #1 last season

Texas RB Bijan Robinson, LB DeMarvion Overshown, DE Alfred Collins were all on the injury report Saturday. Sark says they're all "day-to-day" going forward.

South Alabama coach Kane Wommack says QB Jake Bentley will have an MRI this afternoon on his injured left knee, but they “don’t anticipate" having him this week vs. App State. Desmond Trotter expected to start, with Eli Gainey getting No. 2 reps.
^Trotter played almost the entire game last week after Bentley's injury and was last year's starter

Starkel is back for San Jose

Allen said RB Stephen Carr still questionable, RBs David Holloman and Charley Spegal have gotten more reps in practice this week #iufb

if Tanner McKee is forced to miss a second straight week with an undisclosed injury, true freshman Ari Patu would make his first start. McKee was leaning against a crutch on the sidelines against Utah.

Shaw said the 6-foot-3 Patu has a quick release and a strong arm. The dual-threat QB played the final drive against Utah, his first game experience since he was a junior at Folsom High outside of Sacramento. Patu couldn’t play in the fall of his senior year because the season was postponed due to COVID restrictions, and then he enrolled early at Stanford.

Shaw said that option QB Isaiah Sanders would still play as well. Sanders split time with senior Jack West last week as the offense didn’t post 100 yards until the fourth quarter. Still, Shaw said he won’t rush McKee back.

“We’re not going to make short-sighted decisions that put guys in jeopardy,” Shaw said. “If he’s ready to protect himself and play at a high level then he’ll go out there. If there’s any indecision or whether or not, then he won’t play.”

Oregon State coach Jonathan Smith said WR Trevon Bradford (neck, hip) is probable for Stanford. LG Jake Levengood, DE Sione Lolohea (ankles) doubtful

Mizzou QB Connor Bazelak is again questionable for Saturday's game vs South Carolina.

OC Andy Kotelnicki says Jason Bean did take reps today in practice, will be game-time decision. Still want to redshirt Jalon Daniels. #kufball

Sark said RB Bijan Robinson, RB Roschon Johnson, LB DeMarvion Overshown will all be game-time decisions for KU game

Cole Turner going through protocols

Turner, the Wolf Pack's star tight end, is going through concussion protocols after taking an illegal hit to the head in the second half of the SJSU game. His status is uncertain for Saturday's game against San Diego State.

Blake Anderson on Calvin Tyler Jr.: "Ah, he'll be ready. We were giving him a hard time on the plane on the way home." He attributed Tyler Jr. leaving the game Saturday to minor cramping.

South Alabama’s Jake Bentley has torn MCL, not yet ruled out for season

Spavital named Tyler Vitt the starter at the #TXST press conference

Butch on QBs says we should expect to see Wyatt Begeal quite a bit more over the last three games. Also of note, James Blackman is unavailable for Saturday at ULM. He has returned home due to a death in the family.

Bijan Robinson has a dislocated elbow and is done for the season. Likely played his last down at Texas.

Great football player, even better person.

Dabo Swinney says Justyn Ross is out. He'll probably have surgery Thursday, Swinney says.
^leading receiver

A couple Wolf Pack football injury notes: TE Cole Turner (concussion) expected back Friday against Air Force. He was close to playing vs. SDSU.
^#2 receiver

Auburn kicker Anders Carlson is out for the year with a torn ACL

BYU coach Kalani Sitake says injured WR Neil Pau'u won't play this week vs. GSU and probably won't play next week vs. USC.
^#2 receiver

Emory Jones is starting for the #Gators this week vs Mizzou. Anthony Richardson is 100% healthy "as of 1:30 this afternoon."

#Hawkeyes QB Alex Padilla is listed as the starter this week. Deuce Hogan behind him, again.

"I think there is a chance Jordan Whittington can play this weekend," Sarkisian said. Whittington is still Texas' second-leading receiver, despite being out since the Oklahoma game.

Per Sark, Casey Thompson will be the #Longhorns starting QB for the West Virginia game. Sark clarifying he didn’t bench Thompson in the Kansas game. The plan was for him to get two series and then for Hudson Card to play. Card, unfortunately, then had two turnovers. #HookEm

#UVA football coach Bronco Mendenhall says he's "hopeful" QB Brennan Armstrong will be able to do more in practice this week. Still no concrete update on what is status will be for the Pitt game beyond labeling him "hour to hour."

#Hokies football coach Justin Fuente said wide receiver Tre Turner may need to drive to Miami to play Saturday against the Hurricanes. He has a throat condition that may prevent him from flying.

Cade Otton headed to the locker room on crutches. Not good.
^ left the ASU game

From Ryan Silverfield. Calvin Austin didn’t practice all week but wanted to play today even if limited.
^avg over 7 catches per game before last week's 2-37y

A drive from Blacksburg to Miami sound insanely miserable with a throat infection. Probably makes the condition worse sitting in a vehicle that long...if he can't fly, he shouldn't play but Fuentes is a dead man walking so he probably just wants Turner available.

Not that the Duke QB situation, or any Duke situation is on the minds of many people, but...

Holmberg made the trip to Virginia Tech with the team and was in uniform but Duke coach David Cutcliffe said he wasn’t healthy enough to take a hit and protect himself. So Riley Leonard got the start, making him the first true freshman quarterback to start for Duke since Thaddeous Lewis in 2006. Leonard struggled, completing just 7 of 16 passes for 84 yards without leading the Blue Devils to the end zone. Jordan Moore replaced him in the second half and spark the offense despite the score being lopsided. Moore completed 6 of 12 passes for 63 yards with a 28-yard touchdown pass to Eli Pancol. But Moore did more damage with his running ability, leading Duke with 110 rushing yards on 16 attempts. He scored a touchdown on a 4-yard run in the fourth quarter. Duke plays again on Thursday night at home with Louisville. If Holmberg is still unavailable, Moore appears to be the better choice.

Maybe Moore has some upside if he plays?
