Go Bowling at The Glen Race Preview and Pick

NASCAR Cup Series: Go Bowling at The Glen
Sunday, August 21, 2022 at 3 p.m. ET (USA) at Watkins Glen International in Watkins Glen, New York

Last Week's Race

Last week, the Federated Auto Parts 400 took place at Richmond Raceway.

This track is Harvick's sixth-best in his career in terms of average finishing position.

It was a suitable venue for Harvick to end his 65-race victory draught.

During this race, it was far from the case that it always looked like Harvick would win.

Overall, there were 16 lead changes for which nine different drivers were responsible.

Initial successes were captured by Ross Chastain and Joey Logano who won Stage 1 and Stage 2, respectively.

Harvick finally entered the lead on Lap 334 and then for one final time on Lap 353.

His ability to hold on for the victory was crucial, because he had been struggling to perform well especially with any consistency.

After winning at Michigan, his pattern mandated a weak follow-up performance.

However, his win establishes his superb racing form at that point of the season.

Now he is fourth in the standings.

This all being said, while Harvick did win consecutive races, which is very rare and very hard for drivers to do, we must exclude him from our candidates to win this upcoming race because it is so difficult and rare for drivers to win three consecutive NASCAR races.

Race Info

This week's race is the Go Bowling at The Glen at Watkins Mill in New York.

For this race, drivers must complete a total of 90 laps.

As is almost always the case, there will be three stages for this event.

Stage 1 requires drivers to complete 20 laps.

Stage 2 consists in the next 20 laps.

Stage 3 terminates upon completion of lap 90.

Entry List

By mid-week, an entry list is posted for the upcoming race.

Posted on this list are 39 teams/drivers out of 40 possible spots.

It will be a relatively packed affair.

Therefore, barring any unforeseen circumstances, we already know which drivers will compete in this race.

We may expect all the usual suspects.

Starting Lineup

The starting lineup gets determined via qualifying.

Qualifying for this race will take place on Saturday, the day before the race, starting at 1:05 p.m. ET and ending at 2 p.m. ET

Qualifying will be two groups, multi-vehicle, and two rounds.

A practice session will directly precede qualifying.

Practice will be two groups, and it will be from 12:05 p.m. ET to 1:05 p.m. ET on the same day as qualifying.

Track Info

The Glen is a road course with an asphalt surface.

This course has a long history in which lots of different course layouts have been used for a variety of racing competitions not exclusive to NASCAR.

For Sunday's NASCAR race, there will be eight turns in what will be a 2.450-mile track.

In completing 90 laps, drivers will have accumulated 220.5 miles.

Guy I Dislike

Joey Logano is absolutely worth going against on Sunday.

He has an awful track record here.

Most recently, he failed to finish top-20 in his last four tries at Watkins Glen.

My Guys

This is the time for Chase Elliott to reassert himself while building off his fifth-place finish last week.

At Watkins Glen, he has two wins and a second-place finish in his last three races.

Moreover, I prefer William Byron to Logano as Byron's young history at this track is already much more positive than Logano's.

Byron has two top-10 finishes in his last three races at The Glen.

For the above reasons, invest in Elliott to win and Byron to finish ahead of Logano.

Best Bet: Elliott Outright at +500 with Bovada; Byron Ahead of Logano at -115 with Bovada

I added some after qualifying. All at BAS and all for 1 unit:

Ty Gibbs -115 over Keselowski (now 2 units on this)
Ty Gibbs +110 over Logano
Buescher -120 over Truex
Buescher -110 over Kyle Busch
Allmendinger -130 over Briscoe (now 2 units on this)

Also added for 0.5 unit:
Buescher Top 10 +100 (Bovada)

The McDowell matchups moved too much for me to bet more after he qualified well.

Added at BAS for 1 unit:

Ty Gibbs +130 over Logano (now 2 units on this)
Buescher -115 over Truex (now 2 units on this)
McDowell -130 over Logano (now 2 units on this)

0.4 unit at +250 to win 1 unit:

Buescher to win Group G over Truex, Blaney, and Hamlin (Bovada)

All bets:

4 units:
Buescher -115(3) & -120 over Truex (BAS & BM)

2 units:
Allmendinger -115 & -130 over Briscoe (BAS)
McDowell +100 & -130 over Logano (BAS)
Ty Gibbs -105 & -115 over Keselowski (BAS)
Ty Gibbs +110 & +130 over Logano (BAS)
Haley +130 & +115 over Raikkonen

1 unit:
McDowell -115 over Keselowski (BAS)
Buescher -110 over Kyle Busch (BAS)

0.5 unit:
Buescher Top 10 +100 (Bovada)

0.4 unit:
Buescher to win Group G over Truex, Blaney, and Hamlin +250 (Bovada)

Truex does not sound like he likes his car. They know their car cannot win, so they will points race, which means I doubt he will finish well. Buescher is an underrated road coarse driver. That is why I have 4 units on that bet. Allmendinger, McDowell, Gibbs, and Haley are all also good road course drivers.

Gibbs to the rear, which hurts my bets on him against Keselowski and Logano.

Byron also to the rear. I added:

1 unit:
McDowell +100 over Byron (BAS)

Bell and Kyle Busch also to the rear but that was known before today.

All bets:

4 units:
Buescher -115(3) & -120 over Truex (BAS & BM)

2 units:
Allmendinger -115 & -130 over Briscoe (BAS)
McDowell +100 & -130 over Logano (BAS)
Ty Gibbs -105 & -115 over Keselowski (BAS)
Ty Gibbs +110 & +130 over Logano (BAS)
Haley +130 & +115 over Raikkonen

1 unit:
McDowell -115 over Keselowski (BAS)
Buescher -110 over Kyle Busch (BAS)

0.5 unit:
Buescher Top 10 +100 (Bovada)

0.4 unit:
Buescher to win Group G over Truex, Blaney, and Hamlin +250 (Bovada)
+6.35 units

Watkins Glen:
Cup +6.35 units

Nascar Total (2022):
Xfinity +10.87 units
Cup +59.494 units
Both +70.36 units
