FCS Playoff Thread

Goodbye to Romance College Football
Back in September early October I was playing some FCS and had a pulse on a handful of teams. I haven't followed any scores at all for probably 6 weeks now. Not sure I get motivated to dig back in. I'm sure some of you will be on it?

Earlier this season I listened to FCS Nation Podcast. They don't talk betting, but they do talk about predicting scores and margins. I found it very insightful and I was able to make some educated guesses looking at schedules and learning about the teams from it. FCS Nation - I recommend that. There are some others, FCS Football Talk was ok. Bet the FCS I may've listened to once. There was one, it was a total joke, waste of time it was part of the BLEV podcats, two former Rhode Island players did it, awful.

How come Jackson State isn't in the playoffs?

I always enjoy watching the FCS playoffs and was really looking forward to seeing if Jackson State was for real and if Deion could win a title with them.

I don't know the history of SWAC or HBCU schools and the playoff. They aren't eligible or something? I read Sanders say he wasn't interested in the playoff, but he may've just said that to not make it a distraction knowing they wouldn't go anyway. Not sure the history. There is some controversy that Florida A&M was not included.

I notice in the information you posted above it lists the Ivy League with a disclaimer they do not participate in the playoffs, but no such disclaimer is listed for the SWAC

Wish they were in. That would add a lot of interest

I know zero about the SWAC really. Ivy League is perfectly content doing everything their own way and only their way.

SWAC plays in the Celebration Bowl instead of the playoffs. Unfortunate, but they make good money off it.
Best writer for FCS imo is Sam Herder from herosports.com

Don't recall the 1, 3 and 4 seeds having such potentially huge matchups starting out

Sac St on the other hand gets a team flying cross country

I started going down some ATS results and logs last night but fell asleep. I'm listening to FCS Nation now, they just did it yesterday. For some reason I'm drawn to things I don't know much about.

I had given thought to Elon and the pts. It looks to me like the Furman O is pretty up and down, they've scored 40+ in 3 of their last 5, but have scored 27 or less in 6 of their last 9. Elon has been a good dog pulling upsets vs Delaware (+3 TO), Richmond (were outgained) and William & Mary (+3 TO), overall 3-1 ATS vs FCS as a dog Elon is with turnovers playing a large role in those games. Elon is 6-5 ATS, Furman is 7-3 ATS, although depending on a close number, they could also be counted as 6-4 ATS. One of the FCS nation host enthusiastically liked Furman. The other host liked a close low scoring game leaning Furman.

Davidson is a shotgun triple option team. They played a very week conference schedule plus two unlined lower division teams, so they are only 4-5 ATS. The only time all year they were dogged was week 1 vs Jacksonville State (+26.5 lost 17-35, outgained by 26y). They are just 3-5 ATS as a favorite vs some pretty weak teams. Davidson was just upset two weeks ago at San Diego, they trailed 7-24 HT and lsot 14-31 (-4.5). Richmond has experience going against option type teams in the So Con, although the Davidson version is unique. Richmond is 6-5 ATS. Two of those wins were as dogs, so just 4-5 ATS as a favorite and they are a huge favorite this week. Richmond when favored by 16 pts or more this year they are 2-1 ATS (St Fran 31-21 -18, Lehigh 30-6 -16, Hampton 41-10 -20). Richmond lost their season finale vs a strong William & Mary team, trailed 13-17 HT and lost 26-37 (-1.5). The one host doesn't respect Davidson at all, the other host thinks Richmond also takes care of business vs them.

St Francis may be viewed as weak, although they are 9-2 ATS! They have played some poor competition, but one thing they have done is put the hammer down on those bad teams for the most part, on average in their 9 favorite roles they laid 14.38 pts and went 7-2 ATS in those, then went 2-0 ATS as a dog including just a 10 pt loss week to vs Richmond. Delaware is a lower scoring team and just 4-7 ATS. Delaware has lost their last two to end the season and have lost 3 of their last 4 straight up and 6 of their last 7 ATS! Lost to Richmond by 8 as a 4pt fav and lost to Elon by 20 as a 3pt fav! Looks like they have trouble protecting their QB. The FCS Nation hosts are split on this game. One host likes Delaware to dominate, the other host thinks St Francis will keep it close.

I didn't get through all the ATS data on Fordham and New Hampshire. The thing that jumps out is the yardage and points Fordham scores, it is amazing really. One host likes New Hampshire as battle tested and playoff ready. The other host thinks the UNH run game can be the difference and to eventually get the win.

I didn't run down the other games at all. The one host doesn't think much of the North Dakota offense and likes Weber State to have a convincing victory. The other host didn't make a pick.

Eastern Kentucky has played in a lot of close games. One host has been high on EKU all season and he likes them and is not a believer in Gardner Webb. The other host shows some respect for GW, but thinks that EKU has too much.

Idaho flies 2400 miles for their game at Southeast Louisiana. One host isn't sure what to expect, but likes Idaho. They think that the Idaho head coach should be getting a lot more attention for coach of the year awards then he is receiving. The other host likes Idaho as well.

Montana just go smoked after hosting gameday by Montana State which nearly knocked them out of the playoffs. Thinks Montana bounces back to win, the other host didn't pick, but he seemed to show some respect to SEMO.

Thinking maybe the Davidson - Richmond Under? Assuming Davidson is going to grind clock and have high play count drives that may or may not end in pts.

These lines change obviously.

I went 3-3 last week. Only one real sensible winner I came up with was the Davidson-Richmond Under. The other 5 games were little more than guesses or taking some perceived value on lines.

I do know that this is not the typical North Dakota State team, ie they are vulnerable. Holy Cross is strong team, but 9 seems awfully high vs UNH. Would expect the Word to win.

Holy Cross looks to be +9, is that a mistake? They’re 11-0 and 9 pt. dogs?

The way you mentioned it, it seemed you thought 9 was too many for Holy Cross to be laying, getting 9 would be awesome right? That has to be a typo by them.

Holy Cross is -9. Did you see like Vegas Insider list them at +9?

I’m going by what you posted. There’s just a 9 next to HC. There is a - in front of any home team who is favored (NDSU -6.5 for example). That’s why I figured it’s a typo (on their part).

oh, I see. I don't know why some of those have a - and some don't. But the bottom number aligns with the home team, so Holy Cross is a 9 pt favorite whether they have a - in front or not. Just like Incarnate Word is a 4 pt favorite.

These are lines from 5dimes as shown on maddux sports and can also be seen on BMR. Once the other online books post their numbers the lines move quite a bit, they did last week.

Which would normally make sense (the home team is favored in most of these games), but the lines you posted only have a few - in the lines, the others are all looking like to home team is the dog. Maybe just a weird formatting issue when pasting?

Maddux didn't put the - in front of all the numbers for some reason

Also same numbers shown here if you use the arrow to get where it lists the 5dimes lines

As expected, those early lines have moved A LOT!

Not shocking that the big moves were to favorites, didn't even have lines til yesterday

I really only like Montana as a dog to win but then that's asking them to do it in the dome

Haven't remotely looked at weather today, lots of these FCS teams are in bad weather locations which makes them a ton better

The Word went from 4 to 9/9.5! Jackrabbits jumped up 5 pts. Montana St up 5.5 pts. All the favorites went up except for Holy Cross.

Samford was unlined before due to QB status. Not sure if that was announced, I suspect he is playing based off the line. People like Samford with him.

North Dakota State is not the same team this year they normally are. That seems like a lot of pts for them to lay. They are still good, just not the kind of dominating good that their name implies.

Last week there were 2 upsets out of 8 games. Dogs went 4-3 ATS with one pick'em spread.

Anybody like anything?

Can't remember a year where all chalk won the games straight up in that round

These are some seriously great matchups now, top 8 seeds all made the quarters!

Yesterday had some high scoring games, only one defense stood out really, SDSU

Think the only one next weekend that could be an upset is Samford but again, the dome. Zero reason for me to be against Sac St now that they had their close game.

I love FCS playoff games, but don't keep up too closely during the regular season. I found it interesting though that Samford played Georgia between the hedges and didn't get blown out

13-0 after first Quarter. 30-0 at half and one Georgia TD was with 45 seconds left. Georgia scored only 3 the second half. I'm sure Georgia didn't come out breathing fire, but that's still a pretty impressive showing for Stamford

I just am not really interested in playing a lesser version of NDSU than we normally see at such a high number when the opponent is a quality one. Probably wait til late to bet these. Seems the way for me since I can't get openers

How about teasing Samford to 33? I know nothing about them.

Yeah #6 overall seed getting that seems ludicrous. I like Samford and over in that one, probably only game I play side and total

I played a teaser with Montana St/Incarnate Word and teaser with Mont St-WM under/N Dakota St-Samford under

All just guesses to make TV watching more interesting

Leaning Navy tomorrow. What are you thinking about that one?

Lean Navy and could only play over with that number but not sure I play it

Great day to finally go full on Sat hoops, it's a full day of work without anything else

great game last nite .....

UIC +9, and Montana St +5.5 are the lines at Bovada.
Think I’ll be on UIC +9, and the ML.

That offense is ridiculous.

I worry about the Word D ... but everyone knows this is not the ND State of old so I definitely could see the upset as well.

I put a SD State to win the title bet in last week. They were only +155 so the favorite actually, but I think they are the most balanced team in all facets except for maybe FG kicking

Took Bobcats +5.5 and smaller ML

Saw cracks last weekend in the Jackrabbits defense that I previously hadn't

Rather take UIW/NDSU over, hard for me to take UIW after the thriller last week but can easily see both scoring in bunches here
