Hunt and I will generally alternate weeks on this (with a @cubsker cameo at times) but I'll do the honors now as this is a busy time of year for him in the midget porn industry.

What a interesting first week in conference...I'll go through my thoughts on the games I saw parts of and do some box score notes as well..

I saw almost all of Ohio State and Minnesota. First of all, and while watching a team like Louisville change their tempo to keep an opponent off field and rest the defense, Minnesota tried this early on vs OSU and it wasn't working. Granted, they got going later on but that was backfiring early on. The 4th and 1 gets stuffed and this was a blowout in my opinion. That and the reversal on the interception were huge. The Buckeyes defense is very good up front, and having some issues in the back 7. That is my initial impression. Obviously the WR room is disgusting and they are deep at RB. Henderson is a future star and I would guess gets more and more carries as it goes...

Lets do one more paragraph here...

Stroud.

This was his first start, in a hostile environment, and I think he graded out well. Yes, he was high and off on some passes early on. He admitted nerves after the game. With that being said, he made plays when he needed too and improved as the game went on. He has all the surrounding parts on offense to succeed. Starting off at Minnesota and with a game against a good Ducks team coming up will be huge in his development. I know everyone was expecting some crazy performance but we need to realize that not every highly touted QB at a football factory is going to set the world on fire out of the gate. Bryce Young is higher rated and we saw his mistakes last year. Look at DJ Saturday night, another guy higher rated. Patience is a virtue... this team will be just fine with him at the helm.

Sparty is Portal U and it looks like things are meshing okay so far. Now, Northwestern is pretty bad. I hammered MSU live as soon as I could Friday night. We need to see them vs some better competition. But, they look 'solid'. Conversely, the Cats do not look good at all but they always struggle at the start. Pat will have them improving as they go.

I attended my first Michigan game since the thrashing of Nebraska back in 2011. Everything about the experience was great (in relation to first game with fans in sometime etc). Overall, the team looked pretty much as advertised coming out of camp. The defense is better, but thin on the DL. The RB's are good. Cade manages a game well and JJ will make some jaw-dropping plays and mistakes. Overall, a much 'cleaner' performance all around from this team. He may have finally gelled together a staff with very few weaknesses. The Ronnie Bell injury obviously sucks. I just feel terrible for a captain and really and underdog losing out on a full season. They have depth there, but will miss his heart and toughness.

As far as this team goes, and the season...still staying at 8-4 or so for them...

I didn't see a lot of the game but Iowa just manhandled Indiana. My guy Penix was absolutely awful in his return from injury. That is just a vintage 34 points in an Iowa win on 300 yards of offense. Textbook.

Local product 'Dwan Mathis was 8-25 for Temple against powerful Rutgers. Wow, 61 points. Not a lot of yardage, but they forced 5 turnovers. He is simply a very good coach and they will be a pesky out all year in conference.

Nebraska beat Fordham. I think they are ready for Oklahoma.

I didn't catch any of WVU and Maryland but it looked like a very entertaining back and forth game. I'll look forward to @Timh recap here. Looks like Taulia had a great day just via the box score.

Talk to me about Purdue @PaintCrew . That game was ugly before they finally got 28 of the 51 total points in the 4th quarter.

Every time I turned on the Illinois game, UTSA was making a big play. Big Bert has got to be big mad after that performance. It is what it is with Artur as your quarterback. You give up 500 to the roadrunners and it really is a kick in the face. I mean, 217 of that on the ground with a pretty good defensive line. Mind boggling.

Okay, that is all I got for last week. As you can tell, I saw the most of UM and OSU games plus the start of MSU which led to me firing on that game.

Oh, I forgot...Penn State and Wisconsin. I know @HUNT saw a lot of this one. The fact that Wisconsin ran near 100 plays and scored 10 points is just wild to me. Mertz, hmmmm...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 2...quick hitters then we'll discuss as a group...

Oregon and Ohio State is the big one...Line jumped up pretty quick... My take is Fresno is a pretty solid team so the result there wasn't all that shocking. I feel this is tight for a half then the Buckeyes gets going and win by double-digits...total may be a bit high...

Illinois heads to Virginia. This line has dropped a bit since open. My Cavs knowledge is limited and frankly do not think I want to be involved with a weird ass Illini team right now...

Miami OH heads to Minnesota. Thoughts @Marsski ?

Don't ask why, but I saw some Ohio and Syracuse and it was as ugly as you'd expect. Rutgers is a short favorite here at the Dome and this is enticing to me. They have the coaching advantage (Babers star has faded for me) and they simply play hard. I like these kinds of teams in matchups like this.

Testicle Tech and the Beavers face off in Happy Valley. I still need to get the read on that PSU team after the Wisconsin win. I saw a lot of trashing of Mr. Peanut on social media posts during the game, so I am guessing they were not all that impressive in victory?

Iowa and Iowa State for all the marbles. I'll text Mr. SGU himself and see what he is thinking. Obviously, love to get thoughts from @KJ and @rochclone for this tilt.

Uconn is awful, can Purdue take advantage and get us a patented 'fade Uconn and Umass' TT/spread/1H palooza? I don't really think the Edsall news moves the needle much here. You have to respect this point spread, no doubt, but the Boilers should have some fun out there.

EMU heads to Camp Randall. The line move here is confusing to me a bit. I think you all know by now I hate betting Wisconsin games due to the fact the clock just runs and runs. That is only conducive to my style on certain occasions.

Get to the other games in a bit... Couple of non Division 1 games...

Nebraska and Buffalo is VERY interesting to me. New coach in Buffalo, and they lost a lot of pieces...our data here is limited as they played Wagner so far...talk to me @cubsker

UTL at the Big House. I could not be more pissed off at @jimmymo Huskies for that performance last week. Why? Now it is an absolute must win. I think this was a 60/40 win at best as of a month ago with maybe slightly higher confidence going at the end of camp. I'll tell ya what, that Husky offense leaves a lot to be desired. Old friend Giles Jackson makes his way back home at least.... now, the UW defense is darn good as always. This is as simple as who can limit turnovers. Michigan coughs it up a few times, they will be in trouble. A pretty clean performance and Cade can manage this one into a physical 24-14 kinda win I would think. Once again, the total is too high in a Michigan game. I told ya they would 'run, run run' last time out and not much will change here. The defense should get some confidence vs this Husky team one would think.

Okay, all typed out... lets open it up to the masses...

Couple of notes -- Jimmy Lake

Lake confirms that wideout Ja’Lynn Polk suffered a season-ending chest injury on the first play of the game, while Terrell Bynum, Rome Adunze, and Jalen McMillan are all considered week-to-week — leaving Washington with but four scholarship receivers at the moment. Polk, Bynum, and Adunze are all starters at the position. Taj Davis and Jackson are the only receivers aside from Polk who caught passes in Washington’s season debut.

Speaking of Jackson, Lake was asked if he would share why he transferred to Seattle after spending two years at Michigan. He wouldn’t, but is excited that he spurned the Wolverines.

“I’m not gonna share exactly what he told me about something like that,” Lake said. “All I know is that I’m very happy that Giles is here and what he’s done is he’s bought into our culture, he’s an extremely hard worker. We believe he’s given us an added boost in the return game and at wide receiver. And he’s only gonna get better from here.”

Lake confirmed that Washington will arrive in Michigan on Thursday rather than Friday. The team plans to practice at 8 p.m. EDT on Thursday and Friday in order to get acclimated to the time change.

I took some Sparty +14.5 at Miami week 3. Wasn’t too impressed by Thorn but every other position group looks to have Big Ten talent again, as opposed to MAC level talent they’ve had over the past few seasons

Nice notes @B.A.R.

Purdue recap thoughts now that i'm sober and at work.....

Overall I saw what I was hoping to see most notably on the defensive side of the ball how aggressive Lambert was with exotics, moving Mitchell, GK3, and the Safety Grahm around. Thought the D really kept OSU in check overall other than a trick play in the first half and a CB biting on a double move for a big play in the 4th....i'll live with that. A lot of balls rushed or thrown away by OSU QBs and i think caused the one INT. I don't think OSU really left much too much out there. 21 pts is pretty fair end result from what I saw and going through the play by play this morning. Quite pleased with Purdue's D overall (compared to the disaster of the past 2 years).

Purdue kind of did what Purdue (maybe beginning to be a trend with Brohm) does and left a good bit out there throughout the game IMO.

2nd drive of the game Purdue drove from their own 25 to a 3rd and 7 at the OSU 16. Plummer through a great ball to Bell in the end zone whom was literally pulled to the ground a couple seconds before the ball arrived with no flag to be scene. Purdue then goes to line up for a FG but Brohm and at least one assistant were too busy being in the Refs ear instead of the FG leading to a delay of game followed by an unsportsman like on the coaching staff (and evidently one assistant was on the field). Moving things from a 4-7 at the 16 to a 4th&27 at the 36 and a punt. Cost Purdue a minimum of 3 and a good chance at 7

Other than that the 1st half kind of was what the score indicated. A couple other mistakes by Purdue on O like a offensive PI called on a criss cross which called back a 35 yard big play and I thought a bit too conservative play calling on a drive or 2.

1st drive of 2nd half - Purdue drove from their own 25 to a 3rd and 6 at OSU's 24. Plummer throws a perfect deep ball into the basket of Milton Wright only for it to go right through the basket for an incomplete pass. Purdue then lines up in a split formation for a FG and runs a nearly perfectly executed trick play with the holder (Albers) throwing deep to Payne Durham who had the ball dislodged just enough by an OSU defender as he was going to the ground and the ball bounced off Durham's chest right into the OSU defenders arms on the ground for an INT. 2 golden opportunities missed for 7 points.

2nd drive of 2nd half - Purdue drove down from mid field (after a failed 4th down by OSU) to a 2nd and goal from the 1. Got stuffed on a dive up the middle by Horvath (I don't fault this much but leads to my take away on the O'Line being underwhelming). Then on 3rd and 1 Brohm called an option that was there and just wasn't executed. Plummer screwed up the pitch to Doerue and he had to scramble to pick it up and wasn't able to then get the edge. Would've been a walk-in TD with a good pitch. Led to a FG instead of a TD

Nothing too much else notable but this game could've easily been 37-21 or 41-21 or even 45-21. That being said Purdue's O'Line underwhelmed. Overall the 1H I thought Brohm was a bit too conservative for what he needed to be. All in all though it's a W and in WL we take every last one of those and run with it.

@PaintCrew

how will you play Purdue this week with UConn new interim coach?

me thinking maybe Purdue 1H and 1Q. Also TT overs if BM have them. Might tease Purdue too.

thanks for the notes on their 1st game.

I haven't looked too much into it yet. It's hard to fathom laying 30 plus on the road to anyone with a pulse but clearly UCONN doesn't have one of those.

I just don't know what to make of it though and would have to rely on any UCONN insiders just how much negative (or positive) impact Edsall stepping down immediately will have. The box score vs Holy Cross is so bad though it has to be some sort of joke.... 17-41 throwing? 88 yards rushing on 39 carries vs Holy Cross?

PaintCrew

Well-Known Member
Maybe even more frightening against Fresno:

UCONN passing: 14-30 for 72yds (2.4 per attempt)
UCONN rushing: 31 attempts for 35 yards (1.1 per rush)

KJ

KJ is my name, naps are my game.
He's right although the B12 'ship last year was right there

Shouldn't have said it out loud though. Took Iowa +6 last Friday, usually a dog/under game and I don't see this much differently. Assuming Kolar plays the ISU TEs will be used often, not sure what can really be added. Same team for ISU as last season when they didn't play. For the most part, going to be about Purdy keeping composure and not making boneheaded mistakes that give the Hawks a short field. Two very good defenses, should be a fun, hard-hitting game. Hope the officials let them play.

I wasn’t aware the midget porn industry had certain busy months! Do you have to get the porn made before the midgets go into hibernation or something? Dare I ask what kind of porn he shoots After the midgets disappear?? Am I wrong in assuming he a director? Actor possibly?

I thought it was a solid performance by stroud. I know he basically just had to hit guys flying around wide open but I thought he showed a lot in the mental makeup department. He could have easily botched that game up instead of making the throws he had to in the second half! Don’t think ya could ask for much more from the kid in a tough environment in crappy weather.

I agree if gophers don’t gash them on that 4th and 1 the game very well coulda got real ugly. That said you could also argue had gophers stud running back not gotten hurt that game might have came down to the wire as he was controlling the game imo. Speaking of buckeyes back 7 I really didn’t understand how osu continued biting on those RPO slants after minny lost their only rushing threat?!?? Made no sense.

I gotta believe ducks offense is gonna have a great deal of success with their rushing attack and rpo game! it a damn shame Thebodeaux is hurt (no idea if he gonna be able to play?), that would be a huge test for stroud if he has to deal with that beast disrupting every play!

my initial reaction was I wanted iowa getting anything more then a fg but I’m kinda souring on that. Popular dogs not plays I like to be on and I feel like last weeks results has shifted perception of both teams which I’m not convinced is warranted. Isu struggling was predictable. I thought Iowa’s big win was just as much about Hoosiers not living up to big expectations. I liked iowa w the points before either played just cause I expect it a absolute slug fest but I kinda get the feeling isu wins and whether they cover a total coin flip. Could just as easily be a 6 point win as a 3. These low ass totals for ncaa scare me but think good chance this thing played in the upper 30s.

The way I look at Northwestern is the worse they look early on the better! At some point one the top teams in the league is gonna come to their house in a game everyone will be sure NW gonna get curb stomped and sure enough they will pull the upset! Prob happen twice! Lol

You gotta hate that udub lost last week! If this was the nfl they would be a auto bet in week 2 but I’m not so sure ncaa works that way? Think only way I play that game is to be ion the under with you again.

Was bell the kid who made that incredible catch on the sideline that was negated by a bogus offensive pi call? That was one the most impressive one handed catches I ever seen, shame it didn’t count therefore not shown as much. Didn’t see who it was tho. Incredible catch none the less!!

There is probably an update out there after yesterday's practice. He likely didn't actually practice but what he did or didn't do and if Cristobal made any comments would be the update. Evan Moore of the PAC12 Network said yesterday he was told by 'sources' he would likely play in the game. Not sure if that injury would reduce his effectiveness.

Yes, same guy.

Just a brutal call, what a catch.

Sort of a Big Deal
I said OL was a position of concern and it's even worse than I imagined. Our guards are terrible and the other guys haven't been great either. Manning is getting quite a bit of run at WR which is good, because that's a pretty athletic top 3 with him, Toure, and Martin (Martin sat out last week with a minor knee thing. He would have played if it was a real game.)

Defense has been hit or miss. Real bad third qtr cost them the Illinois game. Didn't play well in the first half vs Fordham. Soft pass D has been surprising. Still a pretty meh pass rush other than Tannor and Payne in the first half vs Illinois.

I can't rule out 3-9 at this point. Ugly.

I will be interested to see if Oregon can put pressure on Stroud. We heard all week/month that Minny was going to try and put him in bad situations with pressure but they never seemed to try. Maybe that was all a smokescreen but he had all day to throw. Couple that with a generally poor Gopher secondary and some stud WR's and you're going to find guys that wide open with all day to throw. Many of us in here could have made some of those throws.

OSU running game was good. I thought their defense was below average to poor in some respects outside of their DL which is always good. Secondary is sketchy and I'd attack #29 all day if I'm Oregon. Gophers had good success against him.

For the Gophers, no idea why Miami (OH) brings to the table. Our OL should dominate and we should still be able to move the ball effectively on the ground with the other RB's we have. Howard (safety) will play and Autman-Bell is still questionable. Will be a GTD I think, but the other receivers played well IMO.

It's not my intent to defend OSU's secondary because I don't expect it to be very good even at full strength, but it should be noted that their most experienced CBs Sevyn Banks and Cam Brown did not play. There was a handful of OSU guys out last week, Banks was in uniform but DNP. Brown and Banks would be starters, the young guys who played in their place will likely be better in time. But as it was OSU did not have their two most experienced CBs on the field. I was told that converted RB McCall saw action at DB. Every CB who registered a tackle vs Min is a Fr.

Proctor supposedly hurt. A key to their secondary at Safety. Coaches at tOSU don't talk about injuries.

i thought it seemed like tv guys were saying freshman or sophomore quite a bit when talking bout osu secondary. The thing that drove me crazy was even after gophers bad ass running back left the game they were biting hard on that rpo slant! That looked like it was more on lb’s or safeties than the corners tho.

I don’t get pac12 network so I had to stream the ducks game and my feed was shit, kept glitching so I didn’t pay super close attention to the ducks offense but I gotta figure they gonna see the film and test osu a bunch with those same type plays as I expect ducks will have success on the ground, Osu will have to make a huge effort to shut the run game down exposing them to the rpo slants all over again! It be interesting to see if ducks attack the same way and if buckeyes make adjustments!!

It is funny sometimes when you know an O has one guy that has to be stopped and the D doesn't key on him. It is likely just defenders playing assignments rather than actually playing different vs a certain jersey number than another. An OSU defender responsible for a zone or an assignment on a given play doesn't want to be more out of position or more flat footed if it is Ibrahim or Potts and maybe Minn's run game is less damaging without Ibrahim, but I don't think defensive coaches want their players to react differently if it is the 1A RB or the 1B RB. I would think they want them to be instinctual with what they are seeing and stop the play, not thinking "this RB isn't as good so they are less likely to give it to him" - if that is the mindset than Potts will make more yards that he should.

that a fair point, my only other counter to that it was still happening when we got to the point it was pretty likely they were gonna be pulling out and throwing a lot more than handing off... regardless of thought process they were clearly doing a really poor job stopping that play, i dont recall if early on that was the run they were using to gain all those yards ibrahim was getting? i wanna say it wasnt but not for sure..

freaking awesome, thanks for that.. so it was basically all that same kind of rpo play.. it was hard to recall cause a lot of those feel like it was straight run for most part but absolutely the same kind of look they got as when he pulled and threw the slant.. now i need to see ducks offensive plays from last week!! gotta think they gonna give osu a heavy dose of this!! be really interesting to see what adjustments they make? could be a thing where we could see within a few drives how much success ducks will have all day!! i smell potential for live bets!!

Ugly.
Any opinion on this weeks total of 54.5? I feel like taking the over because I think both teams will be able to score here and that number really isn't that high. I could see 58-62 easily

Would prefer over as well. Going to be really fucking hot.

is it gonna be windy? I’ve heard fairly strong winds forecasted in some Midwest, I usually like unders with wind but not used to hearing wind strong enough to effect games when it hot as balls!! Lol

Topping out at 15 MPH tomorrow so I wouldn't expect it to be too big of a factor.

yea that not enough to worry bout, not sure I’ve ever seen a game where it was super hot yet had a wind that strong enough to impact:, that be odd. I just heard Midwest so wasn’t sure, think they mentioned the isu game and Michigan game possibly being above 20mph.

Penn State in Wisconsin-Auburn sandwich vs Ball State

Ball State last 9 games vs P5, 7-2 ATS:
2019 vs IU +18 24-34 [BSU 5-7]
2019 @ NCSt +19.5 23-34 [BSU 5-7]
2018 @ ND +34.5 16-24 [BSU 4-8]
2018 @ IU +15 10-38 [BSU 4-8]
2017 @ ILL +6 21-24 [BSU 2-10]
2016 @ IU +16.5 20-30 [BSU 4-8]
2015 @ aTm +30.5 23-56 [BSU 3-9]
2015 @ NW +19 19-24 [BSU 3-9]
2014 @ Iowa +19 13-17 [BSU 5-7]

Those Ball State teams weren't nearly as good as they are now (or were last year and should be pretty good again). Penn State tough matchup however unless the sandwich game situation kicks in.
