Idea for a sports betting app

D-Woww

Old Man Dan
So in the recent years, the worlds of tech and sports betting have collided with the hobby becoming legal in many more places. There are sportsbook apps itself, as well as apps designed to "help" the bettors (even though they are all mysteriously sponsored by books lol) and all

One thing i was thinking of the other day; these apps can log your wagers and track scores in real time. But why not one that will send you an alert whenever a game is x amount of points off the opening line.

For example, lets say the Heat are 12 point favs home vs the knicks. After 1q, the knicks are up by 4. The app would send you an alert so you could see this information and in game bet the heat. Or not, your choice, but I have become pretty fond of in game wagering, and i think something that can send you an alert when the game is however many points (you select) off the closing line so you can look and decide if you want to in game bet it?

Just a thought; maybe this exists. or maybe somebody here is tech savvy enough to make something like this. Its tough to track every game every night and still maintain a life; and on saturdays with 100+ college games its damn near imposible

I've been thinking about building something for players. Not exactly sure what's out there though.

Based on what you are explaining it technically COULD send you a notification that the in-game line “did” move to lets say your desired number. However, its would have most likely changed by the time you signed back on with credentials and tried to wager on it. Most live wagerers are watching the in-game moves so they can immediately get it at that number. Even those numbers can change in seconds.

^^^ That is true. In game wagering is hard enough in hoops with lines freezing & changing literally every few seconds. Could be frustrating as hell to get that alert only to find the line moved three points by the time you are logged in & ready to go.

I like your thinking though. I was even thinking the same for pre-game betting. Most people aren't constantly checking pre-game lines & those sometimes hit a key number very briefly before getting bet back down/up.

Seems like it would be an easy algo for someone who does that kind of stuff

Agree with Chinning about the sign in stuff, if you wanted that you would almost need something set up to auto bet it with a set amount, kind of how the high frequency trades are done on stock market

But just for a warning set up it would be something that I could definitely see be using

Like for the example nurda gave, heat are 12 pt favs pre game, shoot like 20% in the 1st q and are down 10

I.e you could set it for a certain number for any game (if the live line goes say 15 pts off pre game line), set it for certain situations like say when a 10-15 point away favorite gets to + money, or just allow you to choose specific games and set your own parameters

Would work for pre game betting too throughout the week too

Ok, so pregame would you want it to bet for you or alert you? Or both? If it is to alert you, how do you want to receive those alerts? Through an app on your phone, text msg, email, all of the above? Alerts would be extremely easy to build if its text or email.

Different for different player types imo

High volume player would likely want it to just bet, long term if you get into the thousands of bets this might create, it wouldnt factor as an issue if it moved due to something like an injury or suspension, if you believe it's a +ev getting the bets in asap meaning more opportunities more money

Low volume would be better off with alert, hypothetically they have it set for the ravens this week and lamar is announced as out tomorrow, lines gonna move 4-6 points let's say and it comes into the window that meets parameters for a bet, they likely wouldn't want to make the play anymore

Could be used for just normal line shopping, no? Set parameters ... alert me when bet # is X or less, or X or more, and have the app getting feeds from every book imaginable. But most people don't have a bunch of outs so not sure that is for the masses (make much on the app). Or could you have it notify you when there is one book that is point or more different than all the other books? Get the rogue bad number (and 86'ed or limited quickly).

Shrug.

The score app has something like this where it alerts you based on the lines listed if the team is covering etc.

I’m in data science and development at one of the big banks in Toronto so would be happy collab as a fun project if interested.

Doesn’t action app do this as well?

Not sure, I just downloaded it and haven't seen it yet but I'll keep digging. For me, the goal would be to build THE app for sports bettors, especially as it gets legalized more and more places. I think that's what action app is trying to do as well. My first impressions of it are that it seems kind of gimmicky. Would love to hear more opinions on this.

Would be happy to collaborate on an app and see what comes of it!

any experience on the mobile side? I've done very little React Native.
Not too much, it’ll force me to complete my completion of a course I started but between the NLP required for the app and the development stuff I do on python It shouldn’t be too hard to pick up on. My good friend does apps on the side so wouldn’t be hard to get some help.

Also have someone that can help with the UI as she does that for the score app

the problem with getting a bunch of people involved is you have to pay them at some point. Let me think about this a bit.

Fair enough, but if it’s help I need it won’t be charged as they are doing it as a favour. Either way, re-read the thread and you can set up an automation tool, like a sneaker bot, to do a lot of it.

yeah, if you're thinking about just sending alerts off line movement, that would be pretty easy. I'm thinking of building something more comprehensive where that would be one small part.

Again, down to collaborate on things if you’re open to it and limiting.
What languages do you code/develop in?

generally, rails/postgres. If it were just me, I'd probably write a Rails API with GraphQL serving it all up and then use React Native on the mobile side.

OK, after a loooong struggle, I have a beta version ready to test on Android for this. If you would like to be a beta tester, shoot me a PM with your email address and I'll get you a link for you to check this out. I'm just waiting for Google to approve the app. It sounds like it's usually a day or two. Here are some screenshots that give you an idea.

Can the app set 2nd half line alerts for college hoops to dove tail with mr picks approach.

Essentially take every 2nd half line over 6.5 no worse than -1 off closing line with margin less than 16

Stuff like that

No, that's pretty specific. For now, alerts are on a per game basis so you can't set up a system alert. Would be possible down the road. Right now, I only have full game lines. So far, I have BetOnline, Bookmaker, Bovada, and myBookie. I'd like to add DraftKings and Pinnacle soon. I also am now saving the opening and closing lines for each book, so that should be available soon to look back on. I want to display weather forecasts and show you which way a ballpark faces here in time for MLB as well.

Love this

I revisited this lately. Now have Pinnacle, Bovada, and BetOnline lines. Bookmaker and MyBookie have started doing shitty things with their feeds, so I removed Bookmaker and the MyBookie lines are old and shitty and sometimes non existent. I do now have weather forecasts and have MLB park orientation. Also now have an iPhone version. Here's a couple of examples of screens you would currently see. You can search Shark Sports Betting in the Android play store or the Apple App Store to try it out. Totally free.

Yeah, I need a help page to explain navigation. To get weather, click the time. You can also click a team name to see the lines at each book.

I'm still having a little bit of difficulty always getting pinnacle lines. Sometimes, I get them and sometimes, it rejects me. No rhyme or reason why.

The place I'm getting weather from started complaining yesterday about trying to get updates too often (only allows 1000 requests a day for free). Now we have 50 or 60 CFB games that it's fetching, so I have to work on that first or they'll probably turn me off entirely.
